So yesterday I clicked 'Play your mix' on last.fm website as i do everyday but this time it didn't open spotify and showed me an error message saying 'You’ll need Spotify to play this track!'. I do have my spotify ready and waiting ... Thanks in advance for every solution.

Only the Youtube player works at the moment. It doesn't recognize Spotify. When you click on "I have a Spotify account" and then "Play track" in the next window, the player is stuck at "Connecting Spotify..." and returns to "You'll need Spotify to play this track!" in a circle.

The feature is supposed to be working again sometime today, the known problem is on Spotify's site.

Or maybe check out your Daily Mixes in Spotify if you have already have them, because they are quite similar to Last.fm's Mix radio, but split up into up to six different genres.

Spotify have changed the library we use for playback, we're expecting them to have this fixed later today.

Small update if you missed my comment below: Unfortunately we're still waiting on Spotify's developers to restore the service we rely on for playback.  We're also working on an alternative solution using their api, in case they don't follow through; so with a bit of luck we should be back up an running again soon. For now though, only Youtube playback will work, you can change this in your playback settings.   Sorry for the hassle in the meantime.

This is very frustrating for me because I rely on this feature at work. Last.fm was and still the best way to listen to new music without having to put in much manual work. Pandora's radio algorithms are too basic and Spotify's is not diverse enough.

Last.fm, I stuck by when you rolled out that poorly received website update, I stuck by when you can never get the iTunes scrobbler working properly. but without this, you have NOTHING I want. It's sad on how such a useful website is riddled with bad decisions and unaddressed technical failures.

Still not working, nearly a week later, not at home or at work. This is the feature that truly makes last.fm useful for me, and as others have said, youtube is not a substitute. I usually play my friends' scrobbles on my work days, and I'm sorely disappointed that I can't today.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled You'll need Spotyfi... but I have Spotify.

I have Spotify desktop app installed. Spotify is connected to last.fm too, but when I press "play" on any song in last.fm website, Spotify is opening in main screen and nothing happens. No song is playing. Two weeks ago everything was ok.

Adding a bit of detail I experienced...towards the end of last week, when I had the Last.FM website displayed on Firefox and I pressed "play mix," I got a popup asking if I was a Spotify customer. No matter what I selected I could not play anything on Spotify using my Last.FM mix. Previously "play mix" would open the Spotify app and start playing a song from my Last.FM mix.

Last week when this started to occur I tested Internet Explorer and Chrome. IE had the same behavior but Chrome would work the same way Last.FM and Spotify previously worked. That was great until today. Now Chrome is functioning the same way with the pop-up.

The pop-up breaks the Last.FM>>>Spotify playback for me

Thanks.

Still not working. Youtube with all the blocked videos and bad live recordings is not the best alternative. We need additional streaming services on the site, some competition for Spotify wouldn't harm them.

You have DEEZER.com. I'm surprised how to last.FM hasn't connected their web player to their service.

Deezer would be a decent addition, I don't like the skip limit in their flow/mix radio and it lacks in some features, but it's alright and available in more countries than Spotify.

As the direct playback feature in the Spotify desktop client is still broken, you might try the old trick of recreating your Last.fm library radio with large Spotify playlists containing your complete Last.fm listening history if you have too much time on your hands this weekend. ;-) See this thread for more info how to do this. I'm listening to the playlist folder with my Last.fm library in Spotify at the moment in shuffle mode, and it's interesting how many songs I don't remember anymore.

Thanks, but that's a different issue.  The issue we have now is because spotify changed a library we rely on, and we're waiting for them to restore it.

Maybe they want more Last.fm users to use the new Spotify mixes. I don't know, I prefer to have the choice to use both.

If last.fm knows this doesn't work, I feel they should remove the feature to play via Spotify from their website, or at least have a message when you try to play via spotify. I just spent ages trying to re-install Spotify, try it out on different computers, and so on, thinking that my installation had got broken somehow. If there'd been a simple message on last.fm, that you can't play via Spotify from last.fm at the moment, then I would have saved a lot of time, and a lot of frustration.

Last.fm is dying a long dead, year for year. This is another step. I don't think this bug will be fixed. I have no hope. I used last.fm since 11 years, most of the time paying for it. I'm afraid the very best streaming service has no interest in its customers and fans. The six spotify mixes are no equivalent alternative, because I don't want to decide every time between the mixes. I want ONE mix station for me with all my music and new suggestions. Is this so hard to understand?

If Spotify changed the library, they apparently had to. I don't know why they will would now return to the old version? For last.fm? You should adjust to these changes! But most obviously, you wait for someone to do it for you.

There is an update on the official response, they said they are working on it on both sides, which is good to hear.

Since it's already 2 weeks without a solution, a notification on the website is already a long-overdue step. It's not even mentioned on the status page. For similar cases in the future an alternative streaming service would be very nice. I wouldn't want to miss Youtube because it has its own advantages, but it's not the same as a real music streaming service. Volume, quality and accuracy vary a lot on Youtube and the bandwidth consumption is higher for videos, so it's not really working as a background radio like Spotify, but it's very good for active discovery.

I think, last.fm has not the competence to solve this problem, because it is cause by a change in the spotify system. And spotify doesn't have an intererest to solve it, becauce it hase it's own channels. So this will never be fixed, and last.fm is getting useless. I am very sad. All internet music streaming service will lead in the end in ONE, and that is not the best. The same story as happened with vhs beta video200

Another week now. I am a software engineer as well. If I wouldn't have fixed a problem within six weeks, I would be disbanded. Thank god I have finished my payment to last.fm as a subscriber.

I cancelled both my last.fm and Spotify contracts because of this. I specified the reason for cancellation of both services to be this problem. I'm sure due to the loss of my business Spotify will read my reason, and quickly resolve this problem ;-)

Totally agree. Also a software engineer. In one month you have enough time to make an application from scratch, if you put your mind to it.
This library that was changed I will assume is still functional and I will also assume it's not entirely different.
But let's not forget this is the same team that is not able to put more reccomendations on the first page (it's probably a 'rownum' condition somewhere and no one wants to change its value).

By the lack of responses from last.fm in this thread it's easy to imagine what's happening. Last.fm is older than Spotify but they never wanted to pay copyright for their streaming. Their startup was bought over by another company years ago, but they had no clear plan to monetise the service. They started to try and coherse users to pay by scrapping most of their features like free streaming on mobile. And now this.
They are probably not making any money so they've got all their engineers working on something else. Assuming that they still have any engineers.
They are just letting it die slowly.

Spotify really doesn't seem particularly interested in this problem: https://community.spotify.com/t5/Ongoing-Issues/Last-fm-playback-broken/idc-p/1797059

The result of this 2 weeks old report: 2 moderators pasted their standard text in the comment field, showing no sign of having actually read anything at all.

The Last.fm playback radio with its recommendations is a directly competing product to their own new radio mixes. I guess Spotify would need a really good reason to support this.

I keep on coming back to this thread to see if there has been any progress on this problem.  I guess not.

I let my Spotify and last.fm subscriptions lapse (and no, I will not whitelist last.fm when the one feature I loved is unavailable) and have moved on to mostly listening to music via Amazon Echo.

Nothing important, the Spotify support just said they can't reproduce this and the right team was aware of this (7h ago) and closed the bug report.

Looks like I have to use other solutions for now, cause I am not really happy with the YouTube playback...

The trouble, for me, with YouTube playback, is that the rights owners set videos to be only viewable in some countries. So last.fm has the model of "this song, has this YouTube video". People suggest YouTube videos. So e.g. someone in Canada might suggest a YouTube video, but I here in Austria can't view that video. If I suggest a video that works here, the person in Canada can't view it. As a result, because I live in a minor country (Austria), very many videos aren't playable, that last.fm tries to play. Spotify was much better from this perspective. Not to mention low quality YouTube videos, or live versions, recordings from VHS for songs from the 80s, etc.

This is unfortunately so true. It may be perfectly fine for some songs, but no good solution at all. The library / recommendations radio (or other users' radio) were the features I have used the most on last.fm, but this is now gone...

It seems there is no "business scenario" for this feature. I see nobody but Last.fm users pushing for this feature.

Spotify, either intentionally or by lack of interest, seems to not be moving with nothing. Last.fm seems to be hand tied with Spotify support, and there is no other content source beyond Youtube videos at this moment. Could be an opportunity to find something else besides spotify.
