Music catalogue beta - your feedback

Hello everyone!

Update 27 June 2016: We've now made this beta available to all registered users, no longer just subscribers. Read more about how to use it and what's changed below.

---

We're currently working on a new version of our music catalogue, and we'd like to hear your feedback on the work we've done so far.

The music catalogue is what we call our database of all the artists, albums and tracks you can find on Last.fm. The new version of the catalogue will allow us to build some cool new features, which we'll talk about later; for now, we've done the following with it:

  • New releases!
  • Better track listings
  • More corrections on albums and tracks
  • Improved release dates and track durations
  • Better Top Albums
  • More playable tracks

In detail:

WHAT'S NEW

New releases

If you've been missing any new albums by your favourite artists, they are here now!

We've imported loads of new releases, and they are shown on the website now. This means, they're linked from their artists' albums section, and they have track listings and release dates. Tracks that are on these releases are now connected to them.

Better, cleaner track listings

You know those names such as "Stronger (Album Version (Explicit))" or "Heroes (1999 Digital Remaster)", as seen in the track listings on album pages here?

They'll be a memory of the past soon. We've fixed many of our track listings to no longer show them, but instead show good track names, as we all know and like them.

More corrections on album and track names (not currently available)

There are now more corrections on album and track names, from albums and tracks that are the same as others. For instance, from "release name (LP)" to "release name", or from "track name (Edit)" to "track name".

Update 27 June 2016: We've temporarily disabled new corrections (so you're only seeing corrections that are already in place from the old system), as they've caused problems in user libraries.

Other improvements

This update also improves release date and track duration data, as well as the Top Albums shown on artist pages. You should also be seeing more playable tracks, that is better links to Spotify and YouTube videos.

HOW TO USE THE BETA

Go to your settings where you can switch to the new catalogue (and back to the old one). While using the new catalogue, you'll see a notification bar about this on every page.

This is not necessary anymore, as the new catalogue is the default now, and this setting is gone.

Known issues

These are some general issues with the new catalogue, which we are aware of:

  • Some releases show a single release with the same name, instead of the album release (please post examples if you find any)
  • Releases uploaded through our old Music Manager are still missing
  • Some albums show misspelt track names in their track listing (please post examples if you find any)
  • Incorrect new redirections from a valid artist, album or track to another (e.g. artist The Tall Ships → Tall Ships) (please post examples if you find any)
  • Due to new corrections, you may see that the chart positions for artists/albums/tracks in your library have changed (please post any examples where this is wrong)
  • Only the library data of subscribers is in this beta at the moment, so you will see that other users' profiles are empty
  • The library dataset used at the moment was generated about a month ago, so if you've subscribed since then, your profile isn't included at the moment (but will be soon)

YOUR FEEDBACK!

We'd love to hear what you think about the new things we've done here, and where you are seeing any issues, so we can go and fix them.

Some ideas on wrong things you might see:

  • Incorrect track listings (too few or too many tracks, wrong albums being shown, ...)
  • Incorrectly spelt track names in track listings

You can post your feedback here in this thread. When you do, please:

  • Describe what you're seeing, and what you're expecting to see
  • Post links to the pages where you're seeing the problem
  • Post links to places that show what's better (e.g. correct album track listings on Wikipedia)

When using the Beta catalogue, you'll also see an option to give feedback on the names of artists, albums and tracks on their pages. Please use this to tell us wherever you come across any names that you think are wrong (or right!).

Thanks a lot for your help :)

Switched this on for a few minutes and realised that I can't see my old play history which is a shame. Based on that alone I have switched back to the old view, won't be using the beta unless this changes.

I came here after 2 years and I just stare what happened to this site :( I payed subscription so I can listen to last.fm radio like I used to do and I was really surprised this feature no longer exist! My bad, I should have checked before paying. Now I payed for what? Discount? You can keep it, I don't need it. What I need is last.fm radio! :( And I can't even discuss on forums anymore. What is this?? Grrr. I quit.

http://www.last.fm/music/Atlas+Sound+feat.+Noah+Lennox/Logos/Walkabout
This should just simply be Atlas Sound - Walkabout. Right now it is a track by artist "Atlas Sound feat. Noah Lennox and there's just no need for an actual artist page for one feat. on an album.

The same album has another one of these
http://www.last.fm/music/Atlas+Sound+Feat.+Laetitia+Sadier/Logos/Quick+Canal
All the artist pages that are Artist X feat. Y should be removed imo.

I get them back once I switch to the old catalogue.

Yes, this also happens because you've subscribed recently (in the last month). The dataset for this Beta was generated before then, we'll get it updated soon to include our most recent subscribers. Then you'll be able to see data on your profile :)

Sorry about that in the meantime!

No Problems with a empty history. Looks like the new catalogue works. I think it was a good decision to bring back the feedback button "Correct title/name". But what is the procedure which decide about the name change - majority?

>>> what is the procedure which decide about the name change - majority?

At the moment we're just looking for feedback so we can see where the new catalogue is working and where it isn't.  Items where there's a clear disparity between what the new catalogue system has picked and what users are reporting will be investigated by the data team, so they can fine tune the system.

>>>But with the Beta Catalogue I loose two loved songs. - Don't know which.

I'm guessing it's probably duplicates, because that's been happening to me recently (loved the same track under a slightly different artist or track spelling), but if you can identify the tracks that would definitely help here.

Yup, this looks like it has a correction in one place (stats), but not elsewhere - or you would see the redirection notice on one of the pages. It shouldn't be doing this, I've tracked this issue. Thanks for bringing it up :)

The track http://www.last.fm/music/HAI/_/Starpower should be on the various artists album The Best of LMMS Vol.2 as at http://musicbrainz.org/release/ae1c93b3-e8b1-45fe-b4e4-c61fcaf4382c but it don't. Is it not imported yet or is a glitch?

It's also available from http://lmmsartists.bandcamp.com/album/the-best-of-lmms-vol-2
It don't seem to be on Discogs yet.

My profile is also completely empty with this enabled.  http://www.last.fm/user/James-Joul  I Subscribed recently specifically so I could help out with the new catalogue. Kinda sucks that I now don't have access to it until the 'next update'. When will that be?

Also, does this mean that Last.fm won't be able to differentiate between acoustic, remastered or remixed versions of tracks I Scrobble anymore? Because having them all Scrobbled under one track name would be a huge shame - because they're not the same.

As mentioned in the announcement, recent subscribers might find that their library is empty. For the preview phase, we haven't generated library data with new catalogue for all the users/recent subscribers.

It doesn't mean that we will merge all the different recordings of the track under one spelling. If you find examples of those then feel free to use the feedback buttons available on catalogue pages or report in this thread.

What about 'Track - Remastered' and 'Track - Remastered 'year''?  I still see my Beatles song catalog showing lots of those tracks.  I know that's how Spotify catalogs them, but I was under the impression that the new Last.FM catalog changes would merge all of these together.
Example:
http://www.last.fm/music/The+Beatles/_/Eight+Days+A+Week+-+Remastered+2009
Should we suggest changes to help clean up the catalog?

We've tried to eliminate the most obvious patterns that appear on Spotify, but we can't guarantee that you won't see bad tags not being corrected right away.  We'd definitely appreciate it if you can spare a moment to flag them in the system.

For example, if "Eight Days A Week - Remastered 2009" is wrong, please click "No" on the track page, and also find the correct spelling and click "yes" for that one (apparently positive feedback is as useful as negative / this is wrong feedback, if not more so).

Definitely, I've done this for many Beatles albums scrobbled from Spotify already, but it is always better to have more users voting on a correction. You can also vote against wrong album (e.g. from Pink Floyd) and artist names now, by the way. In fact many Beatles albums scrobbled from Spotify have "(Remastered)" added as the album title, and their track lists all show "- Remastered 2009" or "- Remastered 2015" for each track. The reason why it hasn't been corrected yet seems to be an outdated data dump from Spotify which did not contain the newly released Beatles catalogue.

You should also be seeing more playable tracks, that is better links to Spotify and YouTube videos.

"Alles neu macht der Mai!" ;-)

By the way, you will also see more album cover thumbnails in your recent tracks due to this. If some are still missing, try to find out the album in your top albums of the last seven days, go to the related album page and upload the image with the Artwork link there. This worked nicely for me with a large compilation of classical music called "The Decca Sound" with lots of different artists.

I was wondering, will the pages get automatically redirected to the flagged ones or do they have to be manually checked before?

Also, featuring tags will be preferable over non-featuring ones or vice-versa? I think there should be a rule about this, there's lot of artists with these two types of tags for the same track. For example, Iggy Azalea's charts show two different tags in the top 10, one for "Fancy" and another for "Fancy (feat. Charli XCX)", if cases like that were merged it would help to clean up the catalogue.

For performance reasons, corrections aren't being applied to global charts (artist top tracks), during the subscriber beta -- it should be fixed when we roll out the new catalogue to everyone.

>>> will the pages get automatically redirected to the flagged ones or do they have to be manually checked before?

Not at present.  I believe we're just gathering the data at this stage, but the goal is to have an automated system that's responsive to user voting.

"the goal is to have an automated system that's responsive to user voting"

This sounds good, but I feel like you'll need to have the vote threshold set quite low because most people aren't that bothered about suggesting corrections, which means if the threshold is too high it effectively renders the tool useless for users - the only exceptions perhaps being the major artists where they have numbers on their side.

A parallel could be drawn with main images. If it's a major artist, it changes regularly; if they're a lesser artist, listeners can be stuck with the same image for literally years because not enough people bother to vote.

Can you please explain further? May I suggest corrections of wrong artists/song names etc and how do I do that? Also, should all songs by artists be catogorized in albums as of now? Because that's not the case of those tracks I haven't scrobbled with an album. Also. When I download the official scrobbler app on app store the same day it was release a couple of years ago, I had plenty of ads in the bottom for months (even though I've always been a subscriber). Though, that disappeared eventually. A couple of weeks ago I however re installed the app (by mistake) and the ad is back. What to do?

There are 2 different "Tocotronic"-Albums by the band "Tocotronic" - a white one and a red one. The songs of the "white album" are scrobbled as "red" ones.

I think this is a good case for testing out artist aliases and artist disambiguation when the team come to building that.  Since Cheryl Cole is a former name / alias of "Cheryl" (artist intent suggests this will be the correct name now), which in turn is an ambiguous artist name (there's several performers called Cheryl).
