Music catalogue beta - your feedback

Hello everyone!

Update 27 June 2016: We've now made this beta available to all registered users, no longer just subscribers. Read more about how to use it and what's changed below.

---

We're currently working on a new version of our music catalogue, and we'd like to hear your feedback on the work we've done so far.

The music catalogue is what we call our database of all the artists, albums and tracks you can find on Last.fm. The new version of the catalogue will allow us to build some cool new features, which we'll talk about later; for now, we've done the following with it:

  • New releases!
  • Better track listings
  • More corrections on albums and tracks
  • Improved release dates and track durations
  • Better Top Albums
  • More playable tracks

In detail:

WHAT'S NEW

New releases

If you've been missing any new albums by your favourite artists, they are here now!

We've imported loads of new releases, and they are shown on the website now. This means, they're linked from their artists' albums section, and they have track listings and release dates. Tracks that are on these releases are now connected to them.

Better, cleaner track listings

You know those names such as "Stronger (Album Version (Explicit))" or "Heroes (1999 Digital Remaster)", as seen in the track listings on album pages here?

They'll be a memory of the past soon. We've fixed many of our track listings to no longer show them, but instead show good track names, as we all know and like them.

More corrections on album and track names (not currently available)

There are now more corrections on album and track names, from albums and tracks that are the same as others. For instance, from "release name (LP)" to "release name", or from "track name (Edit)" to "track name".

Update 27 June 2016: We've temporarily disabled new corrections (so you're only seeing corrections that are already in place from the old system), as they've caused problems in user libraries.

Other improvements

This update also improves release date and track duration data, as well as the Top Albums shown on artist pages. You should also be seeing more playable tracks, that is better links to Spotify and YouTube videos.

HOW TO USE THE BETA

Go to your settings where you can switch to the new catalogue (and back to the old one). While using the new catalogue, you'll see a notification bar about this on every page.

This is not necessary anymore, as the new catalogue is the default now, and this setting is gone.

Known issues

These are some general issues with the new catalogue, which we are aware of:

  • Some releases show a single release with the same name, instead of the album release (please post examples if you find any)
  • Releases uploaded through our old Music Manager are still missing
  • Some albums show misspelt track names in their track listing (please post examples if you find any)
  • Incorrect new redirections from a valid artist, album or track to another (e.g. artist The Tall Ships → Tall Ships) (please post examples if you find any)
  • Due to new corrections, you may see that the chart positions for artists/albums/tracks in your library have changed (please post any examples where this is wrong)
  • Only the library data of subscribers is in this beta at the moment, so you will see that other users' profiles are empty
  • The library dataset used at the moment was generated about a month ago, so if you've subscribed since then, your profile isn't included at the moment (but will be soon)

YOUR FEEDBACK!

We'd love to hear what you think about the new things we've done here, and where you are seeing any issues, so we can go and fix them.

Some ideas on wrong things you might see:

  • Incorrect track listings (too few or too many tracks, wrong albums being shown, ...)
  • Incorrectly spelt track names in track listings

You can post your feedback here in this thread. When you do, please:

  • Describe what you're seeing, and what you're expecting to see
  • Post links to the pages where you're seeing the problem
  • Post links to places that show what's better (e.g. correct album track listings on Wikipedia)

When using the Beta catalogue, you'll also see an option to give feedback on the names of artists, albums and tracks on their pages. Please use this to tell us wherever you come across any names that you think are wrong (or right!).

Thanks a lot for your help :)

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Wrong album..

MMXII is the sixth studio album of Turkish heavy metal band Mezarkabul (also known as Pentagram). Wasteland, the first single from the album, was released before the album as a free digital content on band's official website. MMXII is the first album of Mezarkabul with their new vocalist, Gökalp Ergen. A Turkish heavy metal album called MMXXII or Pentagram has nothing to do with Pentagram - traditional doom metal band. Is there a chance to move or delete this release?

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled auto-correction / redirection bug leave scroblles without links.

Listening to the album by Ani Cordero - Querido Mundo but it is added incorrectly to my library as Cordero — Querido Mundo plus is does not have any links to the auto-correct or redirected stats. So I can't send you a link to show what the problem is.

But I assume this is because Ani Cordero (solo artist) is auto-corrected to Cordero (the / her old band)

so there are two issues: one is an unwanted auto-correction or redirection which needs to be removed.
the other is a bug where no links (to my library or to song or album pages) are made for these effected songs and albums.

scrobbled thru Spotify but also those added via universal scrobller have the same issues

Why your new catalogue isn't hiding wrong dublicates? Look, this is right album name https://www.last.fm/ru/music/5%27nizza/%D0%9E5 . But also we have https://www.last.fm/ru/music/5%27nizza/%D0%BE5 and https://www.last.fm/ru/music/5%27nizza/05 . You can find right name on https://www.discogs.com/5Nizza-%D0%9E5/master/395871 and https://musicbrainz.org/release/d740833e-785a-4b41-8273-ddee70db03ce. FIX IT PLEASE, the library of artist is too dirty. Thanks!

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Why is "Track" scrobbles merged with "Track (Single Version)"?.

When I listen to albums I only use the title of the song, but if on a compilation an edit, remix/single version appears I will tag it accordingly. But I have noticed that often these different tags merge.

For example; the Smiths:
The Boy With The Thorn In His Side and The Boy With The Thorn In His Side (Single Version) merges.

Another example; Chris Isaak:
Back On Your Side and Back On Your Side (Baja Sessions) merges.

I have also noticed that two Nico albums, The Drama Of Exile and Drama Of Exile, which could easily be mistaken as the same album, but is in fact an original recording and a re-recording, are now merged as one. It would be great if this could be fixed to two different releases.

The correctly named Eternal album Always & Forever needs to have the listening stats merged into it from the incorrectly named Always and Forever.

Similarly, Dawn Richard's Armor On (correct) needs to have the listening stats merged from Armor On - EP (incorrect).

Glaring omission - no proper page for Michael Jackon's Dangerous album. Can be imported from MusicBrainz.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled new catalogue, merging artists.

ive heard that you guys are planning/working on an update to the catalogue that will use unique links for artists to circumvent problems like this https://www.last.fm/music/Nightmare/+wiki
is this true?

if not, can you merge this artist  (wrong spelling) https://www.last.fm/music/%D8%B9%D9%85%D8%B1+%D8%AF%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%A8

with thte correct one https://www.last.fm/music/%D8%B9%D9%85%D8%B1%D9%88%20%D8%AF%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%A8 ?

The deluxe edition for Nick Jonas' album Last Year Was Complicated is missing a proper page. The info can be found on MusicBrainz.

The Eternal single Oh Baby I... has an incorrect entry as Oh Baby I ... (note the space between the I and the ellipsis). Please could you combine these under "Oh Baby I..." (no space)?

What'cha Gonna Do by Eternal is showing the tracklist for the mixes CD (which should be scrobbled under What'cha Gonna Do - The Mixes) rather than the standard single.

The correct tracklist for the standard single can be found here on MusicBrainz.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Songs/artists redirect.

Songs from this album: https://www.last.fm/user/emkns/librar... redirects to American singer Tiffany instead of Korean singer 티파니. Same for this one: https://www.last.fm/user/emkns/librar...
And this one https://www.last.fm/user/emkns/librar... redirects to Luna instead of 루나.
This song's correct name is 주소서, not Confession: https://www.last.fm/user/emkns/librar...

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Wrong redirection.

The south-korean duo http://www.last.fm/music/MOBB is getting automatically redirect to http://www.last.fm/music/Mobb+Deep which is a completely different artist, can that be fixed?

There are several case/lang/veirs albums, as you can see here:

https://www.last.fm/search?q=case%2Flang%2Fveirs

Should be merged to the correct one here:

Tina Arena's forthcoming new compilation album is missing about half the tracks from the second disc - full tracklist is visible on MusicBrainz. Not sure if part of this issue is because these tracks haven't been released and therefore not scrobbled yet - they are Tina's songs covered/reinterpretted by other Australian artists. I have also noticed that the database has a slight issue importing all tracks for an album if the track's artist includes another featured artist(s), as is the required style of MusicBrainz entries.

Also, A Public Affair by Jessica Simpson is showing the single release tracklisting rather than the album of the same name - full album tracks on MusicBrainz.

Please show me that I'm wrong with my apprehension, postings in this thread are useless: Can you please merge "The Alexis P. Suter Band", "The Alexis P Suter Band" and "Alexis P Suter Band" to "The Alexis P. Suter Band" please?

The bonus tracks on Alanis Morissette's Flavors of Entanglement (Deluxe Edition) are incorrectly listed with "(bonus track)" after them.

Also, the deluxe edition of Havoc and Bright Lights is missing a proper database entry. The correct tracklist for this album can be found on MusicBrainz.

Thanks for your feedback everyone.  However with over 500 responses, this thread is starting to become difficult to keep track of.  So after a brief discussion with the team, we've decided to close this thread, and create a new 'catalogue' category on our support forums to help better organise your reports and keep the most common issues together (like capitalisation errors, incorrect redirects, corrections, etc).

This conversation is no longer open for comments or replies.
