Music catalogue beta - your feedback

Hello everyone!

Update 27 June 2016: We've now made this beta available to all registered users, no longer just subscribers. Read more about how to use it and what's changed below.

---

We're currently working on a new version of our music catalogue, and we'd like to hear your feedback on the work we've done so far.

The music catalogue is what we call our database of all the artists, albums and tracks you can find on Last.fm. The new version of the catalogue will allow us to build some cool new features, which we'll talk about later; for now, we've done the following with it:

  • New releases!
  • Better track listings
  • More corrections on albums and tracks
  • Improved release dates and track durations
  • Better Top Albums
  • More playable tracks

In detail:

WHAT'S NEW

New releases

If you've been missing any new albums by your favourite artists, they are here now!

We've imported loads of new releases, and they are shown on the website now. This means, they're linked from their artists' albums section, and they have track listings and release dates. Tracks that are on these releases are now connected to them.

Better, cleaner track listings

You know those names such as "Stronger (Album Version (Explicit))" or "Heroes (1999 Digital Remaster)", as seen in the track listings on album pages here?

They'll be a memory of the past soon. We've fixed many of our track listings to no longer show them, but instead show good track names, as we all know and like them.

More corrections on album and track names (not currently available)

There are now more corrections on album and track names, from albums and tracks that are the same as others. For instance, from "release name (LP)" to "release name", or from "track name (Edit)" to "track name".

Update 27 June 2016: We've temporarily disabled new corrections (so you're only seeing corrections that are already in place from the old system), as they've caused problems in user libraries.

Other improvements

This update also improves release date and track duration data, as well as the Top Albums shown on artist pages. You should also be seeing more playable tracks, that is better links to Spotify and YouTube videos.

HOW TO USE THE BETA

Go to your settings where you can switch to the new catalogue (and back to the old one). While using the new catalogue, you'll see a notification bar about this on every page.

This is not necessary anymore, as the new catalogue is the default now, and this setting is gone.

Known issues

These are some general issues with the new catalogue, which we are aware of:

  • Some releases show a single release with the same name, instead of the album release (please post examples if you find any)
  • Releases uploaded through our old Music Manager are still missing
  • Some albums show misspelt track names in their track listing (please post examples if you find any)
  • Incorrect new redirections from a valid artist, album or track to another (e.g. artist The Tall Ships → Tall Ships) (please post examples if you find any)
  • Due to new corrections, you may see that the chart positions for artists/albums/tracks in your library have changed (please post any examples where this is wrong)
  • Only the library data of subscribers is in this beta at the moment, so you will see that other users' profiles are empty
  • The library dataset used at the moment was generated about a month ago, so if you've subscribed since then, your profile isn't included at the moment (but will be soon)

YOUR FEEDBACK!

We'd love to hear what you think about the new things we've done here, and where you are seeing any issues, so we can go and fix them.

Some ideas on wrong things you might see:

  • Incorrect track listings (too few or too many tracks, wrong albums being shown, ...)
  • Incorrectly spelt track names in track listings

You can post your feedback here in this thread. When you do, please:

  • Describe what you're seeing, and what you're expecting to see
  • Post links to the pages where you're seeing the problem
  • Post links to places that show what's better (e.g. correct album track listings on Wikipedia)

When using the Beta catalogue, you'll also see an option to give feedback on the names of artists, albums and tracks on their pages. Please use this to tell us wherever you come across any names that you think are wrong (or right!).

Thanks a lot for your help :)

Switched this on for a few minutes and realised that I can't see my old play history which is a shame. Based on that alone I have switched back to the old view, won't be using the beta unless this changes.

I came here after 2 years and I just stare what happened to this site :( I payed subscription so I can listen to last.fm radio like I used to do and I was really surprised this feature no longer exist! My bad, I should have checked before paying. Now I payed for what? Discount? You can keep it, I don't need it. What I need is last.fm radio! :( And I can't even discuss on forums anymore. What is this?? Grrr. I quit.

So, we are testing the catalogue now and opening it to subscribers is the first step to making it available to all the users. Timeline wise it will be available to everyone when all the critical/major bugs are resolved.

A kind suggestion to last.fm team.
View artist album catalogues in three modes (leave the choice to individual users)
1.( A to Z)
2.Top rated
3.Dates

Yeah, I'd especially like to see an option for sorting releases in chronological order.  I'd also like to see 'albums' filtered into lp, ep, single, and live recording, if possible.

So make it real. It would be a welcome step forward, to see a chronological discography.

will corrections be customizable in any way? the old correction system had a major limitation that didn't account for user preferences on otherwise valid tags, such as foreign and english artist names. I shouldn't have to 'suggest' a change and hope it becomes consensus, I should be able to build my own corrections which are applied immediately.

(also applies to "explicit", "remaster", from the original post. some users actually want these).

Also, unlike when last.fm was first created, we no longer 'own' a lot of the id3 tags which will be scrobbled from other services (e.g. spotify). So it's not an issue that we just change our local library to reflect our preferences.

I think with regards to "explicit", technically this is the song, and any censored versions should be "radio edit" or the like, as the cleaning up of the lyrics is for commercial usage/broadcast.

It's the problem with a shared music database, as one person's correct tag is another's garbage tag. As a listener of k-pop, I have run into this problem many a time, as lots of Korean listeners take stylisation as gospel rather than an artistic flair for the booklet design. e.g. http://www.last.fm/music/%EC%86%8C%EB%85%80%EC%8B%9C%EB%8C%80/GIRLS'+GENERATION+II+%EF%BD%9EGirls+&a...

Instead of working on yet more changes, how about fixing the issues that STILL haven't been fixed from the roll out of the new site last August?  Such as the fact that we still don't have the option under settings to change time zones like we did on the old site, so we can scrobble in the time zone we live in.

This is something many people have complained about on the forum.  We were told back in August it was being worked on, and now here we are 9 months later and nothing has changed.  I don't understand what's so hard about adding that option.

Can someone that works for Last FM please address this?

I understand your frustration. Maybe you feel better as soon as the staff post a Todo-Ranking where you can find your favourite feature and think: "Well, only 57 points left until this or that will work."
(did someone already suggest this?)

It's amazing how they keep acitvely asking for everyone's opinions and feedback and then completely ignoring everything anyone says. I wonder why they make the effort to ask in the first place when they could just continue sitting around with their hands in their pants.

Would it be possible to let users edit their personal database? If I notice that a song (or an artist or an album) in my db has a mispelled title, it would be awesome if I can correct it manually!

Hi all,

We've updated the new catalogue to make it available to all registered users (no longer just subscribers). Everyone can switch to it in their website settings now.

Also new in this update:

  • More new releases have been added
  • We've temporarily disabled new corrections as they were causing problems in user libraries

Cheers,
Laura

Correct album names are Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh and Üdü Ẁüdü respectively (note all that dïakrïtïks). The same thing for all variations of Ẁurdah Ïtah, Köhntarkösz, Mëkanïk Kömmandöh and other albums with diacritics in their names.

I'm glad the updated music catalogue has been released for all, so thanks.

I do have a few questions though:

  1. Wasn't this new catalogue meant to allow distinct releases to exist with effectively the same name? i.e. an album is named after a single from the album. I've already spotted remaining issues on this topic, e.g. here and here.
  2. How often will the new catalogue sync with sources like MusicBrainz?
  3. Related to (2), some artists seem to have only partially imported discographies, will there be a way to flag these soon? Perhaps submit a ticket to re-sync particular artists, if that is/will be technically possible.
  4. In terms of the correction recommendations, what format do these take? Will there be an option to submit multiple album/EP entries in a ticket to be considered for merging (or even separation for that matter!)?

Some answers/clarification about the intended functionality would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

@Sachin Mangal I've just noticed that you cited Amazon as a new source of input for LFM, which I find alarming. IMO, and I don't know if everybody agrees with me, but in my experience, Amazon is one of the least reliable sources for correct tracklisting and such.
I hope you reconsider this. As Profoundemonium have said above, Discogs is simply the best as far as databases go.

I agree with you, @EtherealMurmur, that Amazon is a pretty unreliable source. Good source for artwork, maybe. Similarly, iTunes is pretty poor, particularly with all the " - Single" and " - EP" they like to attach to so much of their catalogue.

Discogs and MusicBrainz are the best two, though both have their shortcomings. They're certainly the two that should be weighted as most correct, if there is any sort of weighting going on.

Thanks for your inputs. As I mentioned, we are not just relying on one source to ingest the data but more like taking their collective inputs to curate the catalogue. There are heuristics to get the tracklisting etc which is constantly evolving.

Ілля Дробчак, questions are only answered if they are relevant to the topic. Still, since you are curious, updating the catalogue was the main blocker to bring new releases recommendations back. New releases recs will be back but we can't commit on the timeline.

Does that imply that a release that is only in one (or two) of the source catalogues would not be added to Last.fm?

Is there anywhere where we can flag an album's incorrect tracklisting? Or right now do we literally only have the option to say if a band/album name is correct? :|

I've noticed all users can now suggest corrections to tags, but how exactly will you guys know which ones to correct to if we can't type the correct tag like it was possible before? Also, what about tags with wrong capitalization, will they get fixed now?

It should be fixed for new releases that are imported into the catalogue, but there's additional work to address artist / albums / tracks that already existed in the database with the wrong capitalisation.

Guys the catalogue is a mess, since nobody on staff is doing anything about it why dont you make a system where users can fix things ourselves?

Makes no sense to have a system where neither users nor staff are moving forward on this.

For instance I must have mentioned 3-4 months ago that Hannah DiAmond should be Hannah Diamond. I could've learned code by now and fixed it myself.

Yeah it's not that important, but neither is 14 pages of correction suggestions in this thread?

I wonder if this thread is really helping to make change, or are we just sharing these problems to each other... Anyway... today scrobbled band named 3V, but it autoscobbled to 3-V (totally wrong! I don't even have the autocorrect in scrobbles on). There should be a way for the users to edit their scrobblers, otherwise this is just a big mess.

Thanks for your feedback everyone.  However with over 500 responses, this thread is starting to become difficult to keep track of.  So after a brief discussion with the team, we've decided to close this thread, and create a new 'catalogue' category on our support forums to help better organise your reports and keep the most common issues together (like capitalisation errors, incorrect redirects, corrections, etc).

This conversation is no longer open for comments or replies.
