New Last.fm scrobbles database

Hi everyone,

We are beginning to roll out a new scrobbles database. This changes how we store your scrobbles - a big change for us, while to you most things will look the same :)

You will get the following improvements from this:

  • Support for corrections: You can enable and disable corrections properly, with your corrected or uncorrected scrobbles matching in all places

  • Album artists are correctly shown in album views (e.g. the album charts, instead of track artists)

  • Imported plays (e.g. from iTunes, when you first joined) are shown and counted correctly in all views

Please note, as we're gradually rolling out the update, not all of you can see these changes yet.

What you will see:

Your overall scrobble counts should always remain the same.

As a result of the above mentioned improvements, you might see changes to your artist, album and track counts, as well as to scrobble counts of artists, albums and tracks:

  • For example, if you've disabled corrections, your artist, album and track counts usually will go up, and otherwise corrected items will be split up in your charts.

  • Your Loved Tracks now properly support corrections, too. You might see that your Loved Tracks count has decreased when corrections are enabled, as duplicate versions of the same track will have been merged.

  • Where you've previously scrobbled the same album with the same album artist a number of times, you probably would have had these plays split up in your album charts, with the track artists being shown instead. This will now show one album entry, with the album artist as artist. When this happens, you will see a decreased albums count in your library.

  • This also fixes a problem where you could have seen the same album twice in your album charts, with different play counts.

What to do if you notice anything odd:

  • If artists (albums, tracks) have suddenly been split up in your library, check if you have corrections disabled - and if necessary, enable them.

  • If the overall scrobbles count in your library has changed - check if you have imported plays from your media player (when you joined Last.fm; feature available before 2015), these are counted correctly now. The overall scrobbles counts on your profile and in your library should now match.

  • If you notice any slowness in your library, charts or scrobblegraphs not loading - do let us know.

  • If you notice any scrobbles missing or too many - check if any of the above applies, and if not, do let us know.

  • If you have any trouble deleting an artist, album or track from your library - do let us know.

Did you know scrobbling is already turning 16 years old next week? It's been a big journey and our new scrobbles database sets us up for many more years to come. Thanks for scrobbling.

Lots of love,

Team Last.fm

I have several albums that have been split up in my album charts.  Reading the above suggest that I check to see if I have corrections disabled and if so enable them.  How do I do this?

Update:  I did find "Auto-correct the spelling of your scrobbles" under the "website" section of "settings."  It is enabled.

But I still have album plays split that were NOT split earlier.  Some examples:

R.E.M.'s "Lifes Rich Pageant" is now split into that title (without the apostrophe -- which is the official title) and "Life's Rich Pageant" (with the apostrophe.)  Previously all the scrobbles were going to the official title.  Now when I scrobble under the official title it is crediting these scrobbles to the title with the apostrophe.  I would like these two titles combined as they once were.

Yaz's "Upstairs At Eric's" is now split under two artist names, Yazoo and Yaz.  Previously these were combined into one chart listing.  I would like these two titles combined as they once were.  (As of yet this problem does not affect the duo's album "You and Me Both.)

Previously I had one listing for Elvis Costello's "This Year's Model."  Now it has two one under the artist name Elvis Costello, the other for Elvis Costello & The Attractions.  This was a top ten album on my all time album chart.  Now it is split into two with one in the top 20 (Elvis Costello) and one at #174 (Elvis Costello & The Attractions.)  I would like these two titles combined as they once were.

There are other examples but you get the idea.

Turning off Auto-Correct makes the problem worse.

I see no evidence it has been fixed or that my particular post has even been acknowledged.  Shortly after it was posted the problem appeared to be fix when I would reload randomly, but the it would revert back.  Of late it does not even fix itself temporarily when I reload.

And another problem of this type has arisen.  Recently I added the album "Orach: The Golden Anniversary Album" by The Tannahill Weavers to my iTunes.  But when it scrobbles it scrobbles as simply "Orach" which has its own Last FM page.

I also am not sure is meant by enabling or disabling correct.  I go to settings and seen an option to "Auto-correct the spelling of your scrobbles" but nothing else.  It makes no difference if I have that boxed checked or not.

Help.  Please.  Somebody!

I am having the same problem!
My Ryuichi Sakamoto's Async album scrobbles were fine and than they have been split up in two, one with the right tag 坂本龍一 and the other with the wrong Ryuichi Sakamoto tag that usually redirects to the right one when you listen to it. I do not use the wrong tag to listen to this album and my auto correct is enabled. Please, merge them again.

I hope we (the users) can merge the tags soon. I have the same problem since I started using streaming platforms because they use some weird tags; for example: One of my most listened albums of all time is "Confessions on a dance floor" by Madonna, and on spotify it appears as "Confessions on a dance floor (12 reg. track version" so it is spliting my scrobblings because of an extremely weird tag and we are talking about the same album.

It would be great if you guys could fix this and let users apply some changes when it is related, at least on tracks or albums name, not necessary on artists.

Great news finally, thank you. I'm adding lots of classical music videos at the moment, and I noticed that I do not see a play button for some freshly added videos in my Recent Tracks when hovering the track, although the video is available on the track page. This happens for Georg Friedrich Händel, so I guess it might have to do with a hidden autocorrection from the English spelling of his name George Frideric Handel? Has the new scrobbles database fixed something related to wrong autocorrections maybe? Here is an example:

https://www.last.fm/music/Georg+Friedrich+Händel/_/Concerto+no.+6+in+B+flat+major+HWV+294:+Andante+a...

I just added the video to that track page, it plays, but checking my Recent Tracks list there is no play button when hovering it. I scrobble it from Spotify where the artist name uses the English spelling, so it very likely is internally autocorrected by Last.fm.

Will wrong redirections be corrected now as well, or does this take more time?

[Edit]
OK, so now I disabled autocorrections in my website settings, and now Händel is gone, and I see Handel everywhere. But my added videos are gone as well, i.e. the same tracks for George Frideric Handel do not have a video, and I see the usual blue banner on top "Did you mean Georg Friedrich Händel — Concerto no. 6 in B flat major HWV 294: Andante allegro?" So I would to have add the videos again which seems a bit impractical.

That's what I'm hoping for, too. The incorrect redirections that I'm observing haven't changed much. Scrobbles are still counted for the wrong artists.

Incorrect redirections cannot be removed or changed yet, and new redirections cannot yet be added. A lot of people have perhaps misunderstood this but this is really a precursor to that rather than the current outcome. For now the only change on the corrections front is that you can now disable corrections for all of your scrobbles again.

Can somebody make clear about this update - will it solve (anyhow?) situation, when artist changing his name?

For example TRUST become TR/ST and it starts split scrobbles as different artist.

No, it won't currently do this, Lower Gets.

I believe the intention is to (eventually) have unique artist IDs to cater for artists who share the same name so they will have distinct pages, and I presume a knock-on ability of this would be that any artists changing their name could be aggregated to the same page as their previous releases. That would be the logical extension, anyway.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Ghost - Artist profile split into two.

Hello!

I just noticed the profile for swedish heavy metal band Ghost just split into two, and therefore also splitting my scrobbles into two (bumping my actual #1 most listened to second place, haha). Just letting you know, since I'm certain that's not how you want it to be.

The two profiles:

For me, it is somewhat still there. Even though they are merged in my own library, it sais I have scrobbled Missionary Man by Ghost 5 times, while the same song by Ghost B.C. has been scrobbled 29 times, when I go into the specific song pages.

Just a question: with the new database does this means merging and unmerging tags are currently possible?

A question, can we manually edit songs too, and if so, is it only from the last weeks or all time?

And how it is with deluxe editions and remastered editions?

That would be just like a miracle, I also would love to see sth like this. I have too many overlooked "album artists" which doesn't fit to general artist, and I'd love to correct their scrobbles. Even one by one, I doesn't care.

Thanks for the clarification.

Just to be sure, https://www.last.fm/user/OhNoThatSucks/library/music/Queens+of+the+Stone+Age

https://www.last.fm/user/OhNoThatSucks/library/music/Simple+Minds/+tracks

Some examples from my library. So, would the new scrobbles database merge them all? (thus Lullabies to Paralyze would be number one in my album list.) And the Simple Minds songs, would they be merged into each other too? (Non remaster song and the 2002 remaster ones)

https://www.last.fm/music/The+Beatles/+albums

This for example is also filled with duplicate albums with (remaster) or some variant of them added to the rest. With the new database, are they merged in each other with one version, or still separate?

Sorry for these questions, I'm just curious, haha.

>>> So, would the new scrobbles database merge them all? (thus Lullabies to Paralyze would be number one in my album list.)

No I'm afraid it won't.  That page will look exactly the same, because there's no catalogue corrections for those albums.  Same for the Beatles.

The ability to add new catalogue corrections to the website (and merge these albums) is not part of this update, but it's a big step towards being able to do so.

The "What you will see" section of Laura's post above has more details on the actual changes you might see in your library, and it's very possible many users won't see any significant changes, since it's mainly about addressing long standing bugs in the library, like not being able to delete or unlove certain tracks, and the corrections setting not being respected when you turn it off.

This is great news! Congratulations.

Two questions:
  1. Backdating tracks was limited to two weeks, that limit will remain as it is?
  2. Will this suggestions be available through your API when `autocorrect` is enabled?

I'm afraid we can't remove corrections yet, but once the database is rolled out to your account, turning auto-corrections off in your settings will separate these two artists in your charts correctly, instead merging to Cícero.

Does this mean that soundtrack songs will be merged together in a single album like before? For example, instead of having two albums for Bradley Cooper - A Star Is Born and Lady Gaga - A Star Is Born, you'd just have one album Various Artists - A Star Is Born.

If you've tagged your mp3s correctly using the album artist tag, and the app you're using to scrobble to last.fm sends us the album artist data, yes they should.

That's right.  The artist's library page will still show individual tracks you scrobbled from that album (sung by that artist), because they're the track's artist.

e.g.
https://www.last.fm/user/iamlibrious/library/music/Kendrick+Lamar  -> https://www.last.fm/user/iamlibrious/library/music/Kendrick+Lamar/_/All+the+Stars+(with+SZA)

But the album will be listed under various artists here: https://www.last.fm/user/iamlibrious/library/music/Various+Artists/Black+Panther

Thank you ever so much for this! As lots of people are asking, does this mean that we can merge (Deluxe) albums with regular albums? Also are we able to merge song tags that Spotify may have messed up creating two different tags of the song? Whatever the answer is, I'm so happy about this and it's definitely a step in the right direction.

>>>does this mean that we can merge (Deluxe) albums with regular albums?

Not yet, but this is a step towards being able to do so.  Conflicts between the way corrections are handled in the catalogue and the current/old scrobbles database made adding new corrections impossible.  That's one of the reasons we decided to replace the entire database.

The imported plays? No, they just appear as 'unknown date' as they come from before I started scrobbling.

This is how a track page within my library looks like: https://i.imgur.com/ju8WtJH.png
And a library page (i.e. going to Recent Tracks and going 4,000+ pages deep): https://i.imgur.com/6GXdElC.png (they used to be listed in a seemingly-random order but they're indeed in alphabetical order by title now)

We're not able to change or add new artist corrections yet, but this update is a necessary step towards being able to.

It also makes the corrections setting work properly again.  Once we roll out this change to everyone, what this means for listeners of Noah Cyrus is that if you turn off corrections in your settings, your scrobbles will be counted under Noah Cyrus, not her sister.  Same for Kesha, assuming they're tagged correctly in your mp3s.

It took you many months, but as you mentioned it now, I'm happy you finally worked out all complications. So I write here mostly for sake of shouting you "thank you!" for your work.

(and quietly I wanted to remind this topic, I will look at these scrobbles after change, so be ready for any new message if new database won't work in this case :P)

And my personal note now, 1492 artists in library, I won't scrobble anything new till new database will drop in. Let's hope for the best!

I'm not sure if this fits the topic, but I'd like to mention a weird behaviour of the site regarding the band Crashdïet. The artist page has no tags and no albums. If you click on a song, you'll get redirected to the same band, just written all in caps: CRASHDÏET. I assume the special character causes some problems here.

So what about songs that are supposed to be duets but Spotify only scrobbles the first artist of the song and album, most notable example right now being the song "Shallow" wich is performed by both Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper but Spotify only scrobbles it on Lady Gaga? Will they be redirected to the page of the duo?
