New Last.fm scrobbles database

Hi everyone,

We are beginning to roll out a new scrobbles database. This changes how we store your scrobbles - a big change for us, while to you most things will look the same :)

You will get the following improvements from this:

  • Support for corrections: You can enable and disable corrections properly, with your corrected or uncorrected scrobbles matching in all places

  • Album artists are correctly shown in album views (e.g. the album charts, instead of track artists)

  • Imported plays (e.g. from iTunes, when you first joined) are shown and counted correctly in all views

Please note, as we're gradually rolling out the update, not all of you can see these changes yet.

What you will see:

Your overall scrobble counts should always remain the same.

As a result of the above mentioned improvements, you might see changes to your artist, album and track counts, as well as to scrobble counts of artists, albums and tracks:

  • For example, if you've disabled corrections, your artist, album and track counts usually will go up, and otherwise corrected items will be split up in your charts.

  • Your Loved Tracks now properly support corrections, too. You might see that your Loved Tracks count has decreased when corrections are enabled, as duplicate versions of the same track will have been merged.

  • Where you've previously scrobbled the same album with the same album artist a number of times, you probably would have had these plays split up in your album charts, with the track artists being shown instead. This will now show one album entry, with the album artist as artist. When this happens, you will see a decreased albums count in your library.

  • This also fixes a problem where you could have seen the same album twice in your album charts, with different play counts.

What to do if you notice anything odd:

  • If artists (albums, tracks) have suddenly been split up in your library, check if you have corrections disabled - and if necessary, enable them.

  • If the overall scrobbles count in your library has changed - check if you have imported plays from your media player (when you joined Last.fm; feature available before 2015), these are counted correctly now. The overall scrobbles counts on your profile and in your library should now match.

  • If you notice any slowness in your library, charts or scrobblegraphs not loading - do let us know.

  • If you notice any scrobbles missing or too many - check if any of the above applies, and if not, do let us know.

  • If you have any trouble deleting an artist, album or track from your library - do let us know.

Did you know scrobbling is already turning 16 years old next week? It's been a big journey and our new scrobbles database sets us up for many more years to come. Thanks for scrobbling.

Lots of love,

Team Last.fm

First of all, thanks for addressing this, it was my number one stat grievance that I was never expecting to be fixed. Scrobbles from my desktop seemingly work as intended. However, I've still got an issue.

I use the PowerAmp music player app on Android with official Last.fm plugin for scrobbling on the go and despite my files being copied directly from my PC where the album artist metadata is correct, the scrobbles from this app still process the individual artist from a track as the album artist. I'm referring specifically to albums with more than one artist, and a collective album artist tag, as a large portion of the update refers to.

Is it the scrobble plugin for the app to blame? The app itself? Or is it client-side?

Hi Niai, I'm downloading PowerAmp (trial - hopefully it's the same as full) and will check later for you.

Hi again, I should have realised this earlier, but I'm afraid it's not possible to scrobble the 'album artist' field from local files via the last.fm android app, and probably not with most third party scrobbler apps either (e.g. scroball).  This is because the scrobbler app doesn't actually read the mp3 file you're playing on your device, but the 'Now playing' notification that your media player app posts to your phone's notification tray. I believe it's done this way because it's the most reliable way to get the artist, album, and track name from a wide variety of different apps.  I think the only way you'd be able to scrobble the album artist correctly is via a media player app that natively supports scrobbling, but I've yet to find one.  Sorry about that :(

Hmm ok. Seems like quite a big issue if it's prevalent across every known media player app! But hopefully headway will be made in the future. Until then I guess I'll have to try to avoid scrobbling multiple artist albums on the go.

Thanks for your answer and looking into this for me. Much appreciated.

For it to work, you'd need to find a dedicated media player that scrobbles directly from the app (i.e. it has an option to auth your last.fm account), and not using another scrobbler app.  I looked, but all of the apps I could find that claim they have last.fm integration either didn't, or do so via another app (either ours or SLS).  I'll keep looking.

I'm anxiously awaiting this update reaching my profile!
There are way too many incorrect redirections currently poisoning my library.

Thank you to the Last.fm staff for the progress you've all made, and I'm hoping for a sense of urgency in getting this update rolled out to everyone!

I'd like to know if the new changes will work regardless of the app I'm doing scrobbles or if it's just with the official app? In case I'm using Simple Last.fm.
Anyway, thank you for the new updates guys, congratulations on your hard work!

This update changes how we store and display your scrobble data on the website, so it will apply regardless of which app you use to scrobble.

These albums are from the year 2013, and I saw some talking about some being too old to delete?? is that correct?

https://www.last.fm/user/ASummerKiss/library/music/Willie+Nelson/Big+Didi%27s+60er+Oldies+Vol.07
eg of an Artist I tried to delete:
https://www.last.fm/user/ASummerKiss/library/music/Zero+7
now I tried a different Artist that I had one scrobble and couldn't delete the Artist but I could delete the scrobble and after deleting the scrobble the Artist disappeared too.
But, that being said, If I wanted to delete an Artist that had many scrobbles that would be quite time consuming.

Now the box that pops up with the spinning circle after you want to delete a song or album etc,  which states:  "Feel free to close this message, we'll finish deleting your scrobbles in the background."  which I had been closing;  well I decided to not close the box and now I see that it is hanging.......just spinning & spinning and I'm assuming that's why nothing's getting deleted??

It looks like the service crashed earlier this week -- it's running again now, and processing the deletion queue.  However may take some time for your deletes to go through, as there's a backlog of a couple of days.

Have this started? Is "fernbom" updated?
I have 184339 scrobbles when logged in, but 184340 scrobbles when logged out!
That IS strange!

(Also at https://www.last.fm/user/fernbom/library/music/Lena+Philipsson/+tracks
I have "Unga pojkar & äldre män" at 7 and "Kärleken är evig" at 5 when logged in.
And "Unga pojkar & äldre män" at 8 and "Kärleken är evig" at 6 when logged out.)

Hi,

Yes you are.

The scrobble in question appears to be from this page:

https://www.last.fm/user/fernbom/library?from=2006-10-27&rangetype=1day&page=1

It looks like it was scrobbled incorrectly as Jumper - tofflor & skor:

https://www.last.fm/user/fernbom/library/music/+noredirect/Jumper/_/tofflor+%26+skor?rangetype=1day&...

Perhaps you tried to delete it because of the spelling, and the site didn't let you? If so, the delete would have been processed in the new db, and that's why there's a discrepancy between the two databases.

Yes, I remember that now!

That is actually an incorrect Redirection!

In Swedish it is spelled "Tofflor & skor", but it is redirected to "Tofflar & skor".

I really don't care about the mísspelling - even if it's annoying - but I don't want the difference between the databases.

Could you delete the scrobble and/or redirection, please! :)

Ah ok, thanks for clarifying.

>>>Could you delete the scrobble and/or redirection, please! :)

We can't remove the redirection yet, but that scrobble is in the old database that we're going to decommission.  We have no plans to roll back, so you should consider it deleted.

(pardon me for my very weak level of english)

Hello,
I would like to know if you planned to put all the libraries back to auto correction by default ? I wondered because a lot of the accounts I follow to discover new music that interests me saw their libraries all "messed up" with a great lot of artists being split into several (mostly for classical music be really every type of music) which make it quite complicate to navigate, including accounts that have been inactive for several years and are unlikely to be set to auto correction again by their owners.
Thank you very much for your work on this update !

Hi Aisha,

I'm not sure if we will, since it would be overriding other people's correction setting without their permission; but I can see why you might want an option to view other people's libraries with corrections on / off.  I can't make any promises, but I'll raise it with the team for consideration.

Thank you very much for your answer and for taking this in consideration, that's very nice of you. I'll try to do without for now and check if there is any update about this, and I suppose giving the possibility to navigate through any library with or without the auto correction is actually a very good and better idea.
Good luck for improving the new database and dealing with all the requests !

So this has messed up my library. Albums no longer have the correct number of scrobbles despite them never being differently named. They show the correct number when clicked through, the artist plays is still the same, but as you can see from the screenshots, the number under ishows much less in my library. This appears to be on all artists, not just this one. My username is xstex

Also you only have to see the numbers on his below screenshot to see that things aren’t adding up.

Thanks. I’m concerned about this because what I’m reading seems that if the album artist tag wasn’t filled then I’ve lost thousands of scrobbles. I use streaming services these days though and I’m pretty sure a lot of them that have gone where still scrobbled with streaming services. If you go right into the details of tracks they still have the album attached to every scrobble

I hope I am understanding this,  In the case of the album Grease.  All plays by various acts should all be there.  Yet, I still have separate entries of Grease under Olivia Newton-John, John Travolta, John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John and so on.  Should this not be corrected now?

Hi, it depends how you scrobbled them originally, and if those scrobbles included the album artist tag (which not all clients send, as it's an optional parameter).  Can you post a link to your library so I can take a look please?

Reading about last.fm reading the album artist tag is making me worried. I listen to a lot of asian artists and use the Album Artist tag for latin alphabet and the Artist tag for the correct spelling. The Album Artist tag is what I use to browse through my local music library. Am I about to see my library turn into a mess when I receive the update?

Please can you make it so we can correct incorrect tracks. It is impossible to change streaming services ID3 tags. I have scrobbled the same album from many services and ended up with Special Edition, Limited Edition, Horse Edition, Unreleased German Silent Edition, etc...

I just want to be able to click it and say correct to, and then point to a correct track title in last fm, and have that track title replace the one that was scrobbled for everytime I scrobble that incorrect track/album/artist name again.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled What the hell is going on with my account?.

Yesterday I had 492 artists on my library, today I checked and is 532 artists, and i've had deleted these a long long time ago, because the tag was wrong or something else. Some of my scrobbles are gone and some songs has more now, what is going on? Some kpop tags are messed up too and it was fine till yesterday. I loged off and it was all normal. Its all messed up, it will be fixed?

I'm using spotify to scrobble. But the display has changed lately. I have autocorrections enabled from the start. For example: listening to SEUNGRI (as he shows on spotify) it used to show on last.fm as 승리. But now I see:

and it redirects to:

and it counts my scrobbles there. But in my library the albums show as SeungRi not as 승리 anymore... Why is that? Is there a way to fix this?

I'm very sorry, this is because artist corrections aren't applied to new tracks/albums since we relaunched the website in late 2015 (remember the corrections dataset has been static since then).  The current scrobbles database (2015-2018) tried to fudge corrections for new tracks, and while it worked for that specific artist, it actually causes a lot of serious problems elsewhere, with people not being able to delete tracks, unlove tracks,  library links that go to dead ends, or saying you haven't scrobbled an artist when you have, or showing the wrong scrobble count.  What you should see is that your scrobbles for 승리 are counted correctly in your top artists, and his artist page in your library,  but the album will be listed under seungri and so will individual tracks under recent tracks.

We will fix this behaviour completely when we're able to do scrobble corrections again.

I have just noticed that I seem to have this update applied to my profile, so thank you!

The good: my previous plays of Various Artist albums seem to be collated correctly on my charts (n.b. where I have resubmitted at the time the same info from my file tags via The Universal Scrobbler). However...

The bad: during current playback of compilation albums, it's doing the same behaviour as before, i.e. each play is being attributed to the album name under each individual artist. FYI, I have enabled autocorrection and that hasn't made any difference, also this is a problem whether I'm scrobbling on my (Windows) PC or my iPhone with the respective official scrobblers.

I am also having this problem with the compilation albums. It scrobbles correctly if I use Open Scrobbler (https://openscrobbler.com/scrobble/song), but it fails to read the album artist if I use Last.fm's scrobbler on iTunes... Damn guys, can't you fix this?

Yes, this is a known issue with the desktop scrobbler v3 & iTunes that we're currently investigating, it's not related to the new database (though it's more obvious now that we're showing this data correctly).

If you turn corrections off, does the artist count stay the same, increase, or decrease? (when logged in)

I turned off auto-correction, and I noticed that my number of artists jumped from 1,061 to 1,113 when I'm logged in. I visited my profile in an incognito window, and I noticed that I still have 1,113 Artists in my library when auto-correction is turned off. I turned on auto-correction again, and the number of artists decreased on 1,061 Artists. I see the same number of Artists when I visit my profile in incognito mode when auto-correction is turned on. Does this mean the new database has started cleaning up my library from messy charts caused by incorrect tags?

For me it's got nothing to do with the auto-correction option. Mine go up and down of their own accord. In addition to the other improvements of the new update going away and then coming back again. I think the new database might be unstable.

Not sure if this issue is related to these updates but I've definitely noticed changes to some of my artist overall scrobble numbers, e.g Bear's Den was at 999 scrobbles for all time, and it's now sitting at 960. And Prides were in the 590s and they're back down at 551. PVRIS were at 523, now 516 etc.

Is the corrections function linked to this at all? I had it disabled but have enabled it to see if it made any difference and it hasn't as of yet. Many thanks

A suggestion / query.

I'm sure I won't be alone in having only scrobbled certain artists from compilation artists rather than singles/EPs/albums by the actual artist. Unless this update is not fully rolled out, such artists currently list in our libraries like so:

I would suggest (if it's not already on the cards to implement) that it should/would look better like the below image, which is stylistically in-keeping with how alternate-artists are listed when on another artist's album:

I've noticed that some compilation albums in my library list all the contributing artists correctly, while others merely show the track names; is this intended behaviour with a reason behind it, or is it a bug? (see image below)

I think I've figured out the reason for this particular quirk, which I would say needs fixing: if the compilation album you've scrobbled from doesn't have an official catalogue entry (i.e. release date, track list, etc) then the artist field won't be shown in your library view.

Thanks Grii, can you please show me a specific example from your library where your scrobbles are disorganised, and tell me how it's different to what you expect it to be.

For example, one of my artists 嵐https://www.last.fm/es/user/Grii_serena/library/music/嵐   had 89 albums and now I have 102. The SCROBBLINGS of some albums are more than I had or less than what I had that I mean with messy.how can I get them back to how they were before?

The number of albums has gone up because the library now correctly handles the album artist tag like it used to before last.fm was replatformed in 2015, and you've scrobbled some albums with 嵐 as the album artist.

For example: https://www.last.fm/user/Grii_serena/library/music/%E5%B5%90/Baystorm

It looks like you've scrobbled this album 28 times with 嵐 as the album artist.

For example with the song Friendship by 二宮和也, if you click on where it says 11, it'll take you to this page:

https://www.last.fm/user/Grii_serena/library/music/%E4%BA%8C%E5%AE%AE%E5%92%8C%E4%B9%9F/_/Friendship

You've scrobbled the track 19 times in total. 11 of them you've scrobbled with 嵐 as the album artist, and Baystorm as the album name.  The remaining 8 you've scrobbled with the album "Bay Storm" and the album artist "Ninomiya Kazunari".  You can also see those 8 scrobbles listed here:  https://www.last.fm/user/Grii_serena/library/music/%E4%BA%8C%E5%AE%AE%E5%92%8C%E4%B9%9F/Bay%20Storm

It might be messy, but it's an accurate representation of your scrobble data.  To clean it up, we'd either need to add support for album corrections or allow users edit their past scrobble data (which is under consideration for next year).
