Not scrobbling local files from Spotify

My local files that I play from Spotify used to scrobble just fine. January 9 was that last time a local file scrobbled for me. This is not just a matter of the songs not appearing as scrobblin now. I played all my local files in a row just now and none of them scrobbled or showed up even after normal streamed tracks started playing.

I've disconnected scrobbling and reconnected. I've uninstalled the desktop app of Spotify. Nothing seems to help.

Same with me, last time I could scrobble a local file was in january 8. I can only scrobble a local file with the last.fm android app, without it I really can't.

I have spotify premium.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Spotify Local Files Don't Scrobble.

Since two or three days my local files from spotify don't get scrobblet and don't show up in recently player or
now playing. This is a huge problem since many of my songs in spotify
are local so that I can have custom titles, artists or artworks. Not to
mention that I already have many many scrobbles on each of those tracks
and I would like to further let those files be counted on last.fm.
Regular spotify songs scrobble normally, so thats no big deal, but as
mentioned earlier, local files take a good percentage of my playlists,
too.

I already tried reinstalling spotify again and this time
from the Windows 10 Store to have most official version of official
versions out there, but the problem is the same.

Yeah - updates would be nice. Spotify saying it is no longer true? Is this correct Last.FM?

give us another update, the last one was literally 2 weeks ago.
2 Weeks in which I had to cheat some scrobbles over youtube which resulted in many many double-scrobbles...

Hi, we've reached out to Spotify's development team, and they're currently investigating the problem on their side.  I'll update this thread when it's fixed or we have more news to share.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Spotify local files not working, again.

Scrobbles from Spotify from local files have not been working appearently for some days. I'm sorry if this is a known issue but I just noticed now, I lost a lot of scrobbles because of this, this is the exact same problem I hade some months ago and it's happening again.

Right now I'm on Android but I'm sure I lost some scrobbles from desktop too.

Another one here..  Both from Win10 Desktop and iPhone synced files.  Last local file scrobbled was 8 January.  Which seems to have coincided with an app update??

Spotify says this:

"Hey! We're afraid it's no longer possible for local files to scrobble to Last.fm"

Sad news :(

Source, please. A link to the conversation thread or similar, as after a thorough search I found nothing like this on Spotify’s pages.
This is very important to me, as roughly 60% of my tracks are local. If they have indeed entirely removed the feature, I will end my premium subscription and switch into a player that will support local file scrobbling.

Hi Dreamer, I will do the same, I use already other streaming services in the trial period to check out which is the best for me. I can't understand why Spotify has an existing and very useful feature killed.

Thank you! This is actually good news - the phrasing ”we’ll pass this on to the right team” heavily implies that the current situation is not intentional, and that they will look into it.

Erm, this is news to us...  we were still working on the assumption that it was a problem on our end.  I'll ask our team to contact spotify and verify.

That tweet sounds that whoever posted it doesn't know what he is talking about, seems that he thinks that local files were never able to be scrobbled. Anyway even if it's from Spotify side, it seems that it's not supposed to be permanent or intentional. Hope it gets fixed soon.

Scrobbling local tracks is literally the only reason I use Last.FM. If this is true and permanent, it could be a significant blow to your user base...

I'd certainly take it with a pinch of salt until we get confirmation from their actual development team. We emailed them earlier today, and they've told us they're looking into it.

Hi Lucas, can you try adding some local files to a new playlist and see if they scrobble from there?  On mine computer, local files scrobble if they're in playlists, but not if they're started from "Local Files" section of my library.  For other people, both work fine.

Weird, for me local files scrobbling still works. Did you make sure that Spotify scrobbling is working at all for you, e.g. by starting their web player in parallel to their desktop client? It seems that there is a new version 1.0.99.250 out, but that should not have any effect on local files scrobbling. Also note that local files only scrobble when the next track starts, so there is no "Scrobbling now" in your Recent Tracks list.

It's working fine now but sometimes the local files won't scrobble. It's random actually. I think the desktop app is responsible for that since it takes a certain amount of time for it to scrobble at times and maybe the local files scrobbles get lost during that time.

Do you have different codec formats and file extensions in your local music library? Spotify's desktop client can only recognise MP3 and M4A files (either with AAC or ALAC on Windows 10), neither Ogg Vorbis nor FLAC nor WMA for example.

Also note that the desktop client itself does not scrobble at all anymore, it's only the Last.fm scrobbling feature for Spotify scrobbling involved here. So any lagging might be caused by the APIs, but not by the app.

Oliver are these local files added to your custom playlists or started from the 'Local Files' section under your library?

On my computer, only local files added to playlists scrobble - for everyone else in the office it works fine. :/

I put my local files in a playlist so I can download them on my phone and I saved those same local files in my library so all my music appears in one place.

Local files scrobbling works fine 95% of the time but sometimes the scrobbles get lost. For example, the other day the first thing I listened to on Spotify for desktop was a song I imported then I continued to stream. I checked my profile on last.fm and the local file was nowhere to be seen while the songs I streamed where scobbled.

That first local track might have been used to trigger/re-enable the overall Spotify scrobbling again (like starting their web player in parallel), so it got missed.

Yesterday around 11am EST (UTC -5:00 / -4:00), it seemed my Spotify was only scrobbling certain songs. As of this morning, 6:30am, all local files seem to be scrobbling, regardless of where I play them. They're working from the Local Files section and playlists of the desktop app (Windows 10), and working on mobile (iPhone, premium subscription).

Thanks!
