Notifications are now live

Hi all,

I'm happy to let you know that we've just switched on notifications for everyone. You'll now get a notification when someone posts in your shoutbox, or when someone replies to one of your shouts. Notifications are delivered to http://www.last.fm/inbox/notifications and you can see a combined message/notification indicator in the header.

We're planning to add more functionality in the future, including letting you know when someone upvotes a shout you've posted.

Let us know what you think.

Cheers,
Team Last.fm

Yup, as I am not accustomed to this option yet and it gives me some kind of discomfort for now, it's objectively good option and not much time should pass for me to get used to it. Thanks for this!

Being able to subscribe to an artist shoutbox would be useful if we have an own artist profile on Last.fm. But I like this first version as PM, and I wonder if I would need them as an email as well, probably not so much.

"subscribe to an artist shoutbox"
I vote for your suggestion Hans-Jürgen. In combination with the notifications system, shoutbox subscribing offers a new and big potential beneath the still missing "groups" feature. I imagine, this could push the shout traffic for artist-, album-, track- and tag sites.

I literally just commented on an older post about notifications for when we get a new follower, but I see you've answered it here. :P

I have noticed that we don't get any notifications if anyone "'likes" anything we've posted - actually there isn't anything to show if a shout we post is liked at all! I only noticed this when I was logged off and saw numbers by the thumbs up sign on my profile page, when logged on this isn't present.
So basically I have no idea who likes what I post on my page and there is no notification to let me know either when logged on.
I note when I like something the "thumbs up" turns green when logged on.
There doesn't seem any point to liking anything if no-one ever knows about it!
Any news when we might get email notifications of pm's or shouts or..... even likes???

Finally! Thank you. I'm glad because of this. Only 2 questions left for me at the moment:
Will it also work for Pm's?
Is the consequense of this also, to focus the "groups project" as your next sprint?

I can imagine that users who visit their profile often would prefer to have notifications not emailed to them, so an option would make sense. But to wake up someone who forgot about his Last.fm account email notifications could be useful.

We'd like to email notifications in the future. Once site notifications have been running successfully for a while, we'll consider it properly.

Personally I would prefer not to receive e-mail notifications with the current style, but when you're implementing e-mail forwards of notifications, please give us a possibility in the settings to switch that function off.

"to switch that function off."
With this option every user would be able to customize the LFM account to the own needs (in relation to the current LFM status quo). Especially including the suggested "shout subscribing".

It also means, we can start a - more or less - complex discussion about a track, tag, album or artist on the relevant site. That isn't the same as groups, whose return I'm hoping for, but better than nothing.

Goddamit, this sounds a bit like "we want to spam you with notifications". I didn't notice it when writing first comment, so my question: will we have wide option panel to enable / disable specific options? It will be just awesome this way.

And second question - also for users - as notifications looks exactly the same as new PM, so maybe it's good idea to have different colors for first and second thing? I imagine (for example) red color for PM and violet for notifications. It will get me informed whenever I get something less important (notification) or something more important (PM) what would be nice.

>>>Goddamit, this sounds a bit like "we want to spam you with notifications".

That's not really the goal.  The majority of feedback to the new shout format was that it needed notifications so that people could track conversations across multiple shoutboxes. In a similar fashion I can see several people asking for follower notifications. As for upvotes: currently there's nowhere on the site to show you who has liked your comments, and that's something we want to expose.

In any case, what we're planning to do (I'm not sure if it's been implemented yet) to combine similar notifications, so you only get one notification when, e.g. the same person sends you 3 private messages, or several people like the same shout.

This is kind of new territory for us, so we'll see how it goes - if it gets annoying for most people, we'll make adjustments.

That's an interesting idea, I'll discuss it with Paul.

Sorry, but if I am already on my Last.fm profile, I will definitely see that there is a new shout on my page (while it's fine to get them for replies on other pages), but what we need (and asked for since August 2015) are EMAIL notificatons. How hard is it to simply bring back something that existed for years and years?

Also, it would be nice if the notification at least disappeared once I scroll down to my shoutbox, since it's quite annoying having to make two clicks in order to make it go away.

    Hi Giannis,

"is there any possibility for re - introducing latest new artist listened ?"

I'm not totally sure what you mean, can you elaborate a bit please? You want somewhere to list new additions to your library, is that right? (like on the old homepage)

    Hi Jon,
    yes thats right,
somewhere to list new additions to my library
    Just to explain it
There was a feature mentioning the latest new artist added to my library ,i  m not refering to any new track addition by artist already listened in the past, only the newest artist's name along with its icon.
Yes this feature was desplayed on the old homepage near the recommendations on the right side if i m not mistaken and it listed the 4 or 6 (i dont remember) latest new artists added to my library.
when for example it was the 1st time that i listened to a new artist.. then, in my homepage this new artist was displayed there through this tool "Latest new artist added to my library" ,

A very useful feature hoping you re-introduce it.

It's a good idea, but we have no immediate plans to do what you're suggesting just yet. The team are, however, working on something right now which is similar but not quite the same thing.  I can't go into details right now, but it should become apparent in the next month or so.

Never though you would already release this feature after last week's outrage.  Well, nice job.  The new style shoutboxes can now be used as intended and to the fullest.

All I want to see being added is the 'new follower' notifications, which is already planned, according to one mod's reply above.  With this added I'll be 100% fine with the notification system.

Sidenote: Honestly I'm a little sceptic about the future upvoting notifications to come.  First of all the 'most recent' shouts view works best and I would like to see a possibility to set this as a default for all shouts (*hint-hint* = not having to switch the setting at every artist shoutbox).
Even though I see the point the logical introduction of upvoting notifications, this may lead to an overload of information, especially from very popular artists' shoutboxes.  Anyway the future will tell, and I can't stop you from introducing it.

Why spam me with useless notifications of  who voted something up or I commented on something? it would be great to be able to turn this option off. I hope you don't spam me with other useless notifications like tumblr and twitter do.

I would like it if I could get a notification when there is a new shout/if there are unread shouts on an artist I am interested in. Many of the artists I follow don't get shouts too often, and it is a bit of a pain to go through dozens of artists to check if there is something new.

like the one from the old last.f where you get results as you type a query

Clicking the notification link seems to stop the player in it's tracks, unlike navigating to any other link within Last.fm. My first experience of the notification feature was a jolting one.

Re: Notifications:   after using for some time (and enjoying) I've noticed that when you have multiple notifications, and you click on notifications to access them,  once you've clicked on one, (if you have multiple) the highlight/bold on all of them disappears. This makes it difficult to tell which ones you've seen before and which ones are new (other then the time you received them).  Would you be able to change this to being able to access only one notification at a time where the rest are still bold?  If you need further clarification, let me know.

If I remember correctly, the staff reasoned that all the features on the old site were taking up too much data and were essentially out of use, like the "Discover" page. One of the staff members said that the beta would be a clean slate, built from the ground up.

Oh please, please, PLEASE can we have notifications by email? 5 whole months and we still only have notifications if we log on. I don't come on LFM every day, but I would definitely log on if I knew I had a new shout or message. As for the "thumbs up " thing - what is the point in it if you've no idea who's clicked on it on your page? I puzzle over this........... and also there is no point in me clicking on it on someone else's page if they don't know who did it!
