  • Under Consideration
  • (Edited)
It's not a secret that a resized JPG-image looks terrible, especially with a high compression. With the old last.fm I was able to upload HQ PNG pictures in a good quality (even when the site shows it in different sizes) but when I upload a PNG now last.fm converts it immediately in an high compressed JPG which looks mostly terrible.

Please give us the option to upload "real" PNG files again to make the artist and cover libraries better.

Thanks for posting this. I've created a ticket for this request -- I believe the work is planned (we support png for avatars, so...), but I'm still waiting on confirmation (hence, 'under consideration' for now).

Edit: My apologies, that previous comment wasn't entirely correct.  What I've been told is that it's still under consideration.  The site supports PNG uploading but converts to jpg to keep bandwidth small and fast for most users (including mobile traffic).  Obviously this is a compromise between speed and quality, and it's admittedly not the best solution for all images (neither is 'display only png images').  As I understand it, the ideal solution would algorithmically decide when to use jpg and when to use png to ensure the highest quality image, while keeping bandwidth lowest -- that comes at the expense of more work for our team at a time when they have competing priorities.  So it's difficult to say when this will happen, but it's on their radar as something to investigate in the not too distant future.

All things considered, we still keep the original PNG images, so in theory we can display them on the site (e.g. when average screensizes and bandwidth improve), or make them accessible for users that explicitly want to see PNG images at the expense of higher bandwidth. If that's something you'd be expressly interested in seeing, be sure to 'like' the conversation and let us know in the comments so I can make a case for getting it prioritised.
