Problems With Merged Tracks And Capitalization

Let me start out by saying I love the idea of Last.fm merging all the mistagged tracks with the correct track titles because it really does help a lot with scrobbling problems. But there are some instances I've seen where correctly tagged tracks are merged with mistagged tracks, meaning if you're scrobbling the track title correctly it will appear mistagged on your feed. I've recently run into this problem while listening to Strawberry Girls, the track title was scrobbled as Bird Technology pt.I (https://www.last.fm/music/Strawberry+Girls/_/Bird+Technology+pt.I) but the correct title is Bird Technology Pt. 1 (https://www.last.fm/music/+noredirect/Strawberry+Girls/_/Bird+Technology+Pt.+1). Is there a way to change the track title so it is merged correctly, or at least separate the tracks so I can scrobble it correctly?

Another issue that I've been seeing a lot is problems with capitalization. I'm aware of the form that was made to correct wrongly capitalized tracks and soon after it was made I noticed some of the tracks I submitted have been corrected, but that was around 6 months ago and I haven't seen any corrections recently. Basically I just wanted to know if you guys are still taking submissions and are planning on fixing the capitalization for more tracks in the future.

Hi Joey! OK, so you've referred to two different issues here, so I'll explain both of them:

Merges are created on Last.fm by redirects. So, any incorrect titles are redirected to the correct one, thus merging their data (although at the database level the original, uncorrected scrobbles are also kept). Redirects are created by user votes but, as you say, they can sometimes be incorrect.

So, in the example you've given, Bird Technology Pt. 1 redirects to Bird Technology pt.I. This one doesn't look wrong, though: On Discogs and other sources, it's clear Strawberry Girls titled the track Bird Technology pt.I. Spotify, Amazon and some other sites have later corrected this (Spotify's overzealous corrections are another issue entirely) but, in my view, the redirect is correct.

That said, when a redirect is wrong, it's usually an easy fix. Unfortunately, the ability to change, add or remove redirects (and thus merge any data) is currently unavailable, with developers working on a long-standing fix. It's expected soon - the ETA is this year, possibly as soon as April - and once it's brought in corrections will be possible to make, seemingly by placing votes, as in the old system.

The second issue with capitalisation works a bit differently, as this is something that staff can fix at the moment, although it isn't instant. You can report any bad capitalisation in this thread here.

Hope this helps!

Re: capitalisation, I believe this is manually done, so the staff work their way through our submissions as and when they get to them. I think the aim is/was within two weeks, but obviously this kind of minor correction can often take a back seat when more major work needs their focus, like what's happening at the moment. I'm sure if we're patient they will all get addressed sooner rather than later.

And to give you an idea of the scale of the capitalisation task, the backlog from the report form is (or was as of last week) over 7,000 reports.

On their Bandcamp (https://strawberrygirls.bandcamp.com/album/french-ghetto-2) the song is titled Bird Technology Pt. 1 and Musicbrainz (https://musicbrainz.org/recording/3205034d-312e-4608-9098-3afa2804f41c) has it as both Bird Technology, Part 1 and Bird Technology Pt. 1. But my main issue with this is the fact that both parts of the song are scrobbled differently. If Bird Technology Pt. 2 was changed to match the title if Pt. 1, I would be fine with that too.

As for the capitalization, I am aware of the form and I have been submitting wrongly capitalized songs there for a while now. I just wanted to know if the form submissions are still being looked at because I haven't seen many corrections lately.

What you've got there is a contentious case, then. :) Some would argue that the original CD should take precedent, others might say the current primary source of the band is more important. I agree it should be uniform, however it's done.

I've decided to make another post here because I ran into a couple other wrongly merged tracks.

The first one is https://www.last.fm/music/+noredirect/Regurgitate/_/Bestial+Sons+of+Devastation (the correct tag) being redirected to https://www.last.fm/music/Regurgitate/_/Bestail+sons+of+devastation which has the word "Bestial" spelled wrong.

Then there's a problem with some of the tracks from this album https://www.last.fm/music/Jamie+xx/In+Colour. For example, Seesaw (https://www.last.fm/music/+noredirect/Jamie+xx/_/Seesaw) autocorrects to Seesaw (feat. Romy) https://www.last.fm/music/Jamie+xx/_/Seesaw+(feat.+Romy). I don't really have a problem with autocorrecting to featured tags but is there a way to merge the scrobbles? Seesaw seems to have way more scrobbles than Seesaw (feat. Romy) even though it's supposedly the wrong track title. And it's like that for every song in this album with a featured tag.
https://www.last.fm/music/+noredirect/Jamie+xx/_/Loud+Places autocorrects to https://www.last.fm/music/Jamie+xx/_/Loud+Places+(feat.+Romy)
https://www.last.fm/music/+noredirect/Jamie+xx/_/Stranger+in+a+Room autocorrects to https://www.last.fm/music/Jamie+xx/_/Stranger+in+a+Room+(feat.+Oliver+Sim)
https://www.last.fm/music/+noredirect/Jamie+xx/_/I+Know+There%27s+Gonna+Be+(Good+Times) autocorrects to https://www.last.fm/music/Jamie+xx/_/I+Know+There%27s+Gonna+Be+(Good+Times)+%5Bfeat.+Young+Thug+and+...
I'd prefer these songs to be changed so I can listen to them without having "(feat.)" in the titles but honestly as long as the scrobbles are merged I'll be happy either way.

Another problem I keep having is with the song https://www.last.fm/music/Amenra/_/%C3%80+mon+%C3%A2me. Every time I listen to it, autocorrect changes the title to https://www.last.fm/music/+noredirect/Amenra/_/%C3%80+Mon+%C3%82me which is supposedly the incorrect title. I've tried copying and pasting "À mon âme" to the track in my iTunes, but Last.fm still changes it to "À Mon Âme" for some reason. Is there any way to fix it?

And finally there's a huge problem with songs from Lil' Wayne. Every time I listen to one of his songs it autocorrects to a version of the song with only 5 scrobbles. For example https://www.last.fm/music/+noredirect/Lil%27+Wayne/_/3+Peat autocorrects to https://www.last.fm/music/Lil+Wayne/_/3+Peat. Is there a way to get these songs under one tag so they can be scrobbled normally?

Thank you for reading through this, I know this post is kind of a mess but I really hope something can be done about these merges.
