Spotify Beta player

Hi folks,

A few months ago the method we were using for Spotify playback was deprecated, since then we've been working on a new version, which is now ready for beta testing.

It requires a Spotify Premium account, and can be activated by selecting 'Spotify Beta' in the Playback Preferences.

The new player functions a little different from the old one, it will prompt you to connect your Spotify account with Last.fm, and allows you to control any Spotify device signed into that account, such as your phone.

Please give it a try, and let us know if you encounter any problems in the comments.

Known issues

  • You cannot connect to the Spotify Web Player
  • The Spotify API is sometimes very slow to send updates, so the player can appear idle for a long time
  • On some mobile devices if your device goes to sleep / lock screen you may lose the connection between last.fm and spotify.
  • Some privacy / blocking extensions (e.g. Privacy Badger) may block access to 'api.spotify.com', preventing the device running Spotify from being detected.  If this happens, please either disable the extension or adjust the settings to allow Last.fm to communicate with the spotify api.

I did everything described in the release notes but scrobbling ends after after 3 or 4 tracks and sometimes doesn't start at all. Using 2 Android7x devices with the latest Spotify version.

See this staff reply, it might have to do with a change in the Spotify playback API.

How do we can fix problems with the tags in Spotify ? It’s very boring to scrobble two same artists under three names !!! (Mainly Asian artists)

Hello, I have the initial problem again when I try to play my library. All day today I see "Connecting Spotify..." when I try to play any of the options (on Chrome, if it matters). Scrobbling is working though. Can you assist?

Spotify premium no longer works to stream from Firefox (using ver. 58). Instead, a pop-up proclaims "We couldn't find any active devices. Make sure Spotify is open and ready to play," It works in other browsers.

So question: I am having the same troubles reported by others- random disconnection of the stream from Last to Spotify, music stopping when display goes on sleep etc.

So given that the streaming rights are already taken care of via the Spotify Premium requirements....any hope of the dev team actually bringing back streaming to the Last.fm app like the good old days (even if for a fee)?

If you mean streaming music with the new Last.fm desktop scrobbler, then the answer is probably no, see Jon's explanations about the slim design of that new app. The Spotify Player is still in beta status, and staff is still working on it to fix the issues.

On the last fm website (viewed on Safari on IOS) I only see the option to play tracks using Apple Music.

In my settings I don’t see Spotify Beta.

There are options for Spotify or YouTube.

Eith Spotify selected and saved in the settings the tracks still only offer play via Apple Music.

Am I missing something?

Many thanks

I'm not an Apple user, but as far as I know you cannot start a Last.fm radio from its website  on an iOS device using the Spotify app. On an Android device this would work with the new split-screen mode of Android 7.

What should work is starting a Last.fm radio on your laptop or desktop computer with the Spotify desktop client and then switching to your iOS device with the Spotify Connect feature. Remember that you need a Spotify Premium account for this to work.

I am trying the spotify beta player from Israel, and it "jumps" for several songs until it starts playing one, then after that song ends, its jumps again... etc

Do you guys know about this issue?

(jumps meaning it skips them really fast, I can see them skipping and I can see them in the history tab on the desktop player but I can't even hear them start)

Hi Amit, sounds like the tracks are unplayable in your region, so the player skips them; but you should see 'Track unavailable' displayed in the bar, is that happening?

Hi Thomas,

I only see 'Connecting spotify' on the bar.
When I go to the history tab on spotify desktop app I can see that most of them are available and I can play them. only a few are unavailable - it skips available tracks as well.

I can see a PUT to
https://api.spotify.com/v1/me/player/play?device_id=***

which returns a 204.

and then a GET to

https://www.last.fm/player/unavailable?artist=Red+Hot+Chili+Peppers&track=Wet+Sand&=spotify&id=***&ajax=1

which returns 200.

But this track Red Hot Chili Peppers - Wet Sand is available and I can play it.

I couldn't find another Spotify player thread so I'll respond in this one again.

Recently using the last.fm player, I've been getting plays from Youtube mixed in with the regular Spotify player. This only started recently, and is pretty annoying because many of the Youtube plays play ads, that can play for a loooong time.

I've always had Spotify chosen as my player in the Last.fm settings, so I would think that Youtube should never be used as a player. Is this a bug? Can we choose to *always* have Spotify as the player, and never have Youtube show up?

Thanks! Would like to see if anyone else has had this issue too...

I've been having the same issue. This defeats the purpose of the Spotify/Last.fm hybrid. All I want to do is listen to my mix but only using Spotify.
