Spotify Beta player

Hi folks,

A few months ago the method we were using for Spotify playback was deprecated, since then we've been working on a new version, which is now ready for beta testing.

It requires a Spotify Premium account, and can be activated by selecting 'Spotify Beta' in the Playback Preferences.

The new player functions a little different from the old one, it will prompt you to connect your Spotify account with Last.fm, and allows you to control any Spotify device signed into that account, such as your phone.

Please give it a try, and let us know if you encounter any problems in the comments.

Known issues

  • You cannot connect to the Spotify Web Player
  • The Spotify API is sometimes very slow to send updates, so the player can appear idle for a long time
  • On some mobile devices if your device goes to sleep / lock screen you may lose the connection between last.fm and spotify.
  • Some privacy / blocking extensions (e.g. Privacy Badger) may block access to 'api.spotify.com', preventing the device running Spotify from being detected.  If this happens, please either disable the extension or adjust the settings to allow Last.fm to communicate with the spotify api.

Getting the same issue when I'm running the desktop site on Google Chrome on my iPhone (since the mobile site doesn't have the radio options). It's aware of my iPhone and plays one song, but then nothing. :(

Thank you for the reports, does this happen every time, or is it intermittent?

To help us track this bug down, could you post:
  • your browser
  • operating system
  • a link to the track list you were trying to play
  • and which Spotify app you were using (desktop/mobile)

Also, if you're comfortable using your browser console, when the problem occurs, could you run:
lfmJsLog()
And send it to me on Last.fm https://www.last.fm/inbox/compose?to=tdhooper

The console command will not enable anything, it will just put out an error report that Thomas could use to analyze the problem. That is why he needs a copy of it as a PM.

It appears to be an issue with Spotify's API.  We've brought it to their attention and we're waiting for their team to address it.  Sorry for the inconvenience in the meantime.

I could manage the issue of only one single song being played by turning off Random and/or Repeated Playback in Spotify.

Cannot get it to work.  Got an error that it could not find a player to connect to so I opened up a Spotify Web player and the error went away.  However it never played the track.

edit:
I installed the Spotify App from Microsoft Play Store and it never played the track.

edit 2:
I launched the Spotify App on my Galaxy S8 and it played on it.  The app on my phone found the open  Spotify App on my computer. I was able to forward it there.   It seems the only way to connect to my desktop is through my phone   This is totally unacceptable.

It looks like the Spotify Web Player doesn't work with Spotify Connect at the moment, we're reporting this to them.

I installed the Spotify App from Microsoft Play Store and it never played the track.

If this is still happening for you, could you try playing a song manually on your desktop Spotify app before playing from Last.fm?

During development we noticed that sometimes the desktop app doesn't make itself known until you play something.

Sorry you're having difficulties here.

Have you tried connecting with Spotify installed directly (not from the app store, but downloaded directly from their website here: https://www.spotify.com/us/download).

If so, please try the following:
  1. Make sure Spotify is running on your computer, and you're logged into your premium account
  2. In Spotify, open Edit -> Preferences..., and scroll down to and click "Show Advanced Settings"
  3. Under the heading Startup and Window Behaviour, please make sure that "Allow Spotify to be opened from the web" is enabled (green).
  4. On the same computer, go to this page https://www.last.fm/settings/social and "Disconnect " from your Spotify account.
  5. Before doing anything else, please disable any ad or script blocking extensions running on your browser (this step shouldn't be necessary, but let's remove it from the equation).
  6. Now try to start your library radio.
  7. A pop-up window should prompt you to connect with your Spotify premium account, and you'll be taken to a Spotify login page -- log into the same spotify account as step 1.
  8. At this point it should show you the list of connected devices, which should include Spotify desktop client.
  9. Choose that, and it should start playing in your Spotify desktop client.
Please let us know how you get on and if you continue to encounter problems.

Mmm, where do you find Edit -> Preferences... in the new web player!?  The entire problem starts there for me, there is no way to edit any settings in the new web player and I cannot download anything onto my office pc.  By simplifying the web player Spotify has created more problems for their users and they simply don't care...

The new Spotify web player does not have any settings, Jon was talking about their desktop client. Furthermore it is a known issue (see the initial posting) that the playback of Last.fm content in their web player does not work with Spotify Connect, although you can switch to it from the desktop app.

But that's exactly the underlining problem, most people are using the web player in an office environment on pc's where you are not allowed or cannot download and install software, hence the desktop app is completely useless...

Spotify Premium. Desktop App. Playing 'Similar Artists'.

Manages 1-3 tracks before stopping. Sometimes playback ends completely and requires a page refresh before trying again.

I got it to play one song. After that, it played that same song from a different album. Then every time I hit next it was that version of the song.

(If it matters, I was using the Spotify App on my iPhone)

Hi chewiii, could you give us a bit more info: https://getsatisfaction.com/lastfm/topics/spotify-beta-player?topic-reply-list%5Bsettings%5D%5Bfilte...

By the way, scrobbling is still handled by Spotify, which sometimes waits a while before it submits scrobbles.

I can't get the Spotify beta player to work either. I'm using the Spotify web app because I can't install any unauthorized software (Last. fm player or Spotify) on my Mac at work. I can play music from the Spotify web app alone but then it doesn't scrobble.

The Spotify web player can be scrobbled with a browser extension for Chrome. This extension also works in Opera if you install the add-on Download Chrome Extension first. There also exists a version for Firefox, but not for Safari, as you are on a Mac. The extension does not add the album info to the scrobbled track on default, but you can edit it while it is not submitted yet by clicking on its green icon and add the album manually.

It works, it scrobbles, doesn't stop after each song, such as other users tell.
But, normally I stream from spotify to sonos with spotify connect, and sonos looses the connection after every song, and it have to connect new.

Yes, you need to have a Spotify premium account, and the Spotify app running on either your desktop or mobile device for it to work.

If it still doesn't detect Spotify running on your computer, please try removing spotify from your social settings and then reauthorise it by starting the radio / playing another track.

I noticed a weird error today. Half of the artists that I saved on Spotify desktop app Spotify deleted. I remember I had almost 4000 songs; now I have only 700-800 tracks. What could be the cause? Could it be a Spotify BETA player that I tried to connect to my desktop client? I didn't have this problem yesterday.

Hello guys,

I'm having the same error. Looks like that when you do the request to "/me/player/devices", it's returning "undefined". I already restared Spotify, removed/added the spotify auth on the social settings. Any other idea?

Thanks.

Any chance of this functionality being rolled into the Android App?

First we need to figure out the issues people have reported so far, but we'd like to try integrating this into the mobile version of the site, so people can control playback without needing a laptop nearby.

That's a question for Spotify, as it's their API.

The new playback method uses the Spotify Web API which affords a Premium account, probably because it enables Spotify Connect, their feature to switch from one device to another without interrupting playback. Being able to play e.g. an on-demand list on a mobile phone has always been a Premium feature on Spotify.

See their FAQ page and overview of hardware gear that has Spotify Connect built in. Theoretically this should also work for their web player and game consoles like Xbox and Playstation or WiFi devices like Smart TVs and Watches or Amazon Echo, but it seems that there are problems with some of these.

Note that sometimes Spotify offers discount prices for Premium accounts like a free 30 days trial or $0,99 for three months or cheaper prices for students and families. Check your Spotify account if you are eligible for one of those offers.

Trying the first song using the website on a standard web browser, and it's streaming to my Spotify on my iPhone. No issues as yet, however, you really need to update your mobile site to allow us to play the 'radio' options, to avoid needing two devices just to play music.

EDIT: Never mind, changed to desktop site viewing and the options are right at the bottom of the page. It allows me to choose my phone and streams within my iPhone! Also, I've tried about 4 consecutive songs, which worked fine back-to-back - no 1-play issues here. Keep up the good work!

EDIT 2: Forget the above, having it play from the Chrome browser on the iPhone, to the Spotify on my iPhone only allows 1-play. This proves quite frustrating. Going to give it one more push to check just in case.

EDIT 3: Attempted a lengthy play, streaming from a desktop to Spotify on my phone. Managed to get up to 8 songs, before stopping.

Seems to me that if you let a song play all the way to the end it will freeze up on the desktop player and require a refresh of last.fm.

I've not had any problems if i just press skip before the song ends.

It's working perfectly for me, even the annoying "3 seconds into the track the player says Track Unavailable" issue seems to be gone

Was the catalogue updated though? There's still a lot of stuff that is available on Spotify that does not play if i start the player from last.fm

And also a suggestion to add a "Do not ask this again" box for the dialogue that asks what device i'd like to play?

And just as i wrote this the "Track Unavailable" error came up at this album: https://www.last.fm/music/Excruciating+Terror/Divided+We+Fall

Thoudh i see that this band is not on Spotify so i guess that's why.

Know that feeling. I get very frustrated when playing something to find it's not on Spotify, so I can't make full playlists of my collection. Sigh! Bad enough that we still have to split them into 10k lists and the stupid shuffle function totally fails to work on Spotify... even for paying customers...

Jon - I know there are X1 and PS4 versions of the Last.fm app, but is there any hope for those of us who have PS3 Spotify? I have my whole CD library ripped to my PS3 (it's one of the things I love about the PS3: you can swap in a SATA laptop drive of whatever size you like (in my case 1tb!) & it rips CDs at 320 by default - though it does, annoyingly, fail to maintain the track number in the filename), and as I say, the Spotify app for PS3 in addition to that. It'd be nice to be able to scrobble when I play my music that way.

I may try the beta...but now I'm confused... I am using the Android app for Last.fm and playing music via Spotify Connect on my home stereo and it's scrobbling OK! Granted, I have scrobbling to LFM disabled on the Spotify app itself and am running the LFM app simultaneously to pick up whatever's played on or through my phone, as having it turned on through Spotify Connect seemed to scrobble some songs twice in a row and some not at all. But, yeah, confused now... *sighs*

Can anyone please explain to me what this ought to enable? Is it about being able to play Last.fm radio stations again? Because I've missed that, and would like to be able to use the feature again.

Right, playing Last.fm radio stations was only possible in the Spotify desktop client for free until Spotify changed access to their catalaogue a few weeks ago, so playback from Last.fm via Spotify was not possible anymore. The new method which is supposed to fix that problem now uses Spotify Connect via their API which also includes Android mobile devices and Hifi gear besides other hardware devices. That is why you need a Spotify Premium account now for playback of Last.fm radios and on-demand lists via Spotify. At the moment the Last.fm Android app is not able to play a radio station via the Spotify Android app though, but this might be possible in the future.

It seems to work fine with a minor hick-up to start with
Note: I had Spotify (macOS app) open and playing when granting permission, still I first got the message
" We couldn't find any active devices. Make sure Spotify is open and ready to play, then . "
=> hitting retry solved the issue though and I could select the current player/device
