Spotify Scrobbling (Beta)

Hello everyone,

We've created a new way to scrobble with Spotify. Instead of configuring each application or device separately, you now only need to link Spotify to Last.fm in your applications settings page. Once connected you'll be able to scrobble wherever you use Spotify. This brings back scrobbling to Spotify's web player, and opens up the ability to scrobble from Spotify Connect devices like games consoles, TVs, Amazon Echo, etc.

This new feature is in beta, and there are some known issues, so please read the following before connecting:

Known issues:

Local files don't update "Scrobbling now"

Scrobbling local files is now supported (provided tracks have a valid artist and title id3 tags), however 'Scrobbling now' isn't currently displayed.  This means if you mostly listen to local files on Spotify, it can appear as if you're not scrobbling until the tracks finish playing.  This will be fixed in a forthcoming update.

Offline scrobbling is limited to the last 50 tracks played

This is due to the fact that the Spotify API only allows us to access the last 50 tracks from your play history.

(Spotify free) Tracks don't scrobble until the adverts finish

This happens because the tracks you play in Spotify aren't actually scrobbled until the next track starts.

Occasional double scrobble

We're aware of some instances where a track you've previously played will be resubmitted to your profile at a later time by the offline scrobbler (usually when you open spotify in another device and play a track).  We've fixed the vast majority of cases where this can happen, however there are still some rare cases where it's can happen still -- typically for tracks that have been played for over 30 seconds and then paused for over 30 minutes.

Scrobbling works initially, but then you keep getting 'disconnected' on a regular basis

We've been investigating this issue thoroughly, and have been taking steps to mitigate it where we can.   We're still trying to determine exactly what triggers this problem, but suspect that the underline issue is something to do with the way Spotify handles tracking and switching between devices.  We also believe it's more likely to happen on older / slower systems, and when resuming tracks that have been paused for over 30+ minutes. This problem has been flagged with Spotify to investigate as well.

If you encounter this issue, we recommend the following:
  • Play the track all the way through and let the next track start -- in some cases "Scrobbling now" isn't displayed correctly when you start a session, but the track will still scrobble. Scrobbling will work normally from the second track onwards.
  • If that doesn't work, we recommend that you Close down / exit the Spotify application and then restart it.  In most cases this should fix the problem.
  • Actively switching to another device (e.g. mobile to desktop, or vice versa), or opening the devices menu and starting a track, can also fix the problem.
  • If that doesn't work, please go to your Last.fm application settingsDisconnect Spotify scrobbling, and then Connect your account again.

Scrobbling from Spotify isn't working anywhere

Some users have also reported that they cannot scrobble at all from any device, or that while it's working OK from mobile, it's not working from desktop.  We're aware of your feedback and are looking into it.

Some things to double-check:
  • You're using the latest version of Spotify.
  • The Last.fm login is no longer available from the 'Social' heading of Spotify settings page (this is expected). If it's still there, please disable it and update your Spotify app.
  • You're connected to Spotify Scrobbling here: https://www.last.fm/settings/applications
  • On the same page, where it says "Connected as", you're linked to the same Spotify account you're using on your device.
  • In your Spotify account settings, "Last.fm Scrobbler" is listed as an approved application.
We've heard unconfirmed reports that logging out of Spotify and back in again can help, as can resetting your Spotify password.  It's also been suggested that logging into Spotify via email & password, rather than through Facebook can fix the issue, though we've yet to verify this.

----

We'll update this post as these issues get fixed. If you notice any other problems, please let us know in the comments.

When reporting a problem please let us know the following details:

  • Your Last.fm and Spotify usernames
  • Which device / OS are you encountering the problem on? (desktop or mobile)
  • What is the version number of the Spotify app you're using? (found in the settings page on mobile, and help -> about Spotify on desktop)
  • Are you using a Spotify free or premium account?

Cheers,
Team Last.fm

Hi James, this new Spotify scrobbling integration works great for all native Spotify apps on all my mobile devices and desktops.
It however does not seem to work for Spotify streams on Sonos systems. Mostly nothing is scrobbled at all, sometimes scrobbles get through after 24 hours or so, limited to the last 50 songs only. Is this on your radar? Will this be fixed?
Thanks! Grts, Lode

Hello everybody, my account is last.fm/it/user/kalo963,
It's been like few days that my Spotify scrobblings aren't registered, neither the current song I'm listening to. How can I solve it? I already tried reconnecting Spotify to last.fm and vice versa, also putting private mode and deactivating it, I tried anything...
Thank you

Scrobbling has been mostly broken for the past week. At home, I can use my laptop (macOS 10.14.3), phone (iOS 12.1.4), and Samsung TV and get scrobbles with no problem (including when I send the audio to my Sonos speakers directly from Spotify). At work, it's a different story: even though I've added my Spotify account to the Sonos system and I am sending the music to our Sonos speakers directly from the Spotify app, I would say 95+% of the tracks are not scrobbled.

My last.fm profile is: https://www.last.fm/user/number1alien
My Spotify username is Adam Nowek.
All devices are running the latest version of Spotify.

No scrobbles much of the time from desktop. Tried disconnect/reconnect, from my usual Google Chrome browser, and from Microsoft Edge (that works so far, but I shouldn't have to go there in the first place); deleted cookies; closed/restarted Spotify, and the problem keeps recurring. It's been doing so for the last seven days.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Spotify scrobbles not working.

It has been three weeks since my scrobbling has stopped working. I have tried every single thing I can think of to get scrobbling to work on my account and I have had no luck. I have disconnected my account from spotify, deauthorized my account from spotify and reauthorize it. Uninstalled it, downloaded the desktop app, gone in offline/private mode. All of those "fixes" and nothing. What I am more upset about is the lack of support from the Last.fm team as I have heard from no one on their end. I have gone to the support forum and had no luck there (hence why I am trying again). I tweeted at them, no responses. Tried sending an email but it was for business inquires only. At this point all I am asking is for someone to have something that I can try and do to fix my scrobbling or in anyway I can contact workers at last.fm .

My account: https://www.last.fm/user/Ntram455

There are currently scrobbles of full albums on my account as I have been using a manual scrobbler to add at least something to my account while it withers and dies so when it is fixed I will have some songs on their from the missed time. But my scrobbling officially died on February 27th 2019.

Also I do not want any suggestions about having to use a chrome extension and spotify web player as I want my account to be fixed and be able to scrobble on all of my devices. (i.e Phone, Echo)

I read your previous conversation with the mods and find that we have the exact same problem. What's annoying is that my spotify works completely fine with another Last.fm account, just like the fault is on our accounts :/

My Spotify scrobbling has not been working for a few days now. It happened some times before but logging out and in of spotify could fix, however I've tried anything I can this time (changing password, disconnecting spotify and reconnecting,...) but it still doesn't work. Hope you can help! My user name is GoatNga

What is the other account's username?  Can you try disconnecting from that, and then connecting it back to your main account?

Scrobbling is implemented using Spotify's API, which sends us player state updates whenever you do something in your spotify client, e.g. when you start a track, pause , resume, skip, and so on.  The problem we have is that sometimes the Spotify api stops sending us updates for some users, even though their account is still connected to Last.fm.  Since the api stops sending us messages, we have no idea if there's a problem or if you've simply stopped listening to music.

Reconnecting your account in your settings usually is enough to fix this problem, but not always. What's particularly frustrating is that it seems to affect users randomly, and there's no obvious connection between devices, accounts, settings, spotify version, etc; so there's no way for me to troubleshoot this -- if it's not working, it's not working. :(

Hi. My scrobbles have not been showing up since this morning. My last registered scrobble was from last night. I recently updated the Spotify app so I suspect that may have something to do with it.

* Last.fm: trnsgndr Spotify: strwbrries

* iPhone 8 Plus iOS 12.1.4

* Spotify iPhone app Version 8.4.97.900

Scrobbles stopping several times today. It usually helped when I downloaded some songs for offline playback, that lost scrobbles appear and it starts working again. But this now also does not work. It shows the scrobbling now and then it disappears. It happened several times today. It really sucks. This "feature" has been beta for how long? and it is still not working! (Win10 PC, latest app, didn't change a thing since yesterday expect starting my pc this morning - it then worked for at least 6 hours, then it started breaking, disconnected, reconnected....name it, I tried it)

Inbetween, lastfm shows error 500 - or "you didn't listen to any music yet!" yeah right. Every evening the same - lastfm cannot load my scrobble data, says I didn't listen yet, server error 500 or whatever.

Scrobbling local only files from Spotify doesn't scrobble the album artist. Regular spotify tracks do. Thankfully I can edit them but it's frustrating especially as I've got a number of compilation albums that aren't on Spotify

The last 50 offline scrobbles should be resubmitted once their API comes back to life.

It looks like Spotify's API is having issues again, which is affecting scrobbling via (link: https://www.last.fm/settings/applications) last.fm/settings/appli.... We've already contacted them and they've told us they're working on the issue.

Update: Spotify have resolved this issue.

I am also not any longer able to scrobble from YouTube, using the workarounds for Mozilla that worked earlier this week.... and I have re-authenticated, verified, but still no luck. Something more than Spotify is going on.... Could it be a Windows update?

Any issues with spotify scrobbling won't affect youtube - they're completely separate.  If you're still having this issue Bill, please create a new topic and provide your username and more information on which apps / extensions you're using to scrobble.
