Spotify Scrobbling (Beta)

  • 90
  • Announcement
  • Updated 3 weeks ago
  • (Edited)
Hello everyone,

We've created a new way to scrobble with Spotify. Instead of configuring each application or device separately, you now only need to link Spotify to Last.fm in your applications settings page. Once connected you'll be able to scrobble wherever you use Spotify. This brings back scrobbling to Spotify's web player, and opens up the ability to scrobble from Spotify Connect devices like games consoles, TVs, Amazon Echo, etc.

This new feature is in beta, and there are some known issues, so please read the following before connecting:

Known issues:

Local files don't update "Scrobbling now"

Scrobbling local files is now supported (provided tracks have a valid artist and title id3 tags), however 'Scrobbling now' isn't currently displayed.  This means if you mostly listen to local files on Spotify, it can appear as if you're not scrobbling until the tracks finish playing.  This will be fixed in a forthcoming update.

Offline scrobbling is limited to the last 50 tracks played

This is due to the fact that the Spotify API only allows us to access the last 50 tracks from your play history.

(Spotify free) Tracks don't scrobble until the adverts finish

This happens because the tracks you play in Spotify aren't actually scrobbled until the next track starts.

Occasional double scrobble

We're aware of some instances where a track you've previously played will be resubmitted to your profile at a later time by the offline scrobbler (usually when you open spotify in another device and play a track).  We've fixed the vast majority of cases where this can happen, however there are still some rare cases where it's can happen still -- typically for tracks that have been played for over 30 seconds and then paused for over 30 minutes.

Scrobbling works initially, but then you keep getting 'disconnected' on a regular basis

We've been investigating this issue thoroughly, and have been taking steps to mitigate it where we can.   We're still trying to determine exactly what triggers this problem, but suspect that the underline issue is something to do with the way Spotify handles tracking and switching between devices.  We also believe it's more likely to happen on older / slower systems, and when resuming tracks that have been paused for over 30+ minutes. This problem has been flagged with Spotify to investigate as well.

If you encounter this issue, we recommend the following:
  • Play the track all the way through and let the next track start -- in some cases "Scrobbling now" isn't displayed correctly when you start a session, but the track will still scrobble. Scrobbling will work normally from the second track onwards.
  • If that doesn't work, we recommend that you Close down / exit the Spotify application and then restart it.  In most cases this should fix the problem.
  • Actively switching to another device (e.g. mobile to desktop, or vice versa), or opening the devices menu and starting a track, can also fix the problem.
  • If that doesn't work, please go to your Last.fm application settingsDisconnect Spotify scrobbling, and then Connect your account again.

Scrobbling from Spotify isn't working anywhere

Some users have also reported that they cannot scrobble at all from any device, or that while it's working OK from mobile, it's not working from desktop.  We're aware of your feedback and are looking into it.

Some things to double-check:
  • You're using the latest version of Spotify.
  • The Last.fm login is no longer available from the 'Social' heading of Spotify settings page (this is expected). If it's still there, please disable it and update your Spotify app.
  • You're connected to Spotify Scrobbling here: https://www.last.fm/settings/applications
  • On the same page, where it says "Connected as", you're linked to the same Spotify account you're using on your device.
  • In your Spotify account settings, "Last.fm Scrobbler" is listed as an approved application.
We've heard unconfirmed reports that logging out of Spotify and back in again can help, as can resetting your Spotify password.  It's also been suggested that logging into Spotify via email & password, rather than through Facebook can fix the issue, though we've yet to verify this.

----

We'll update this post as these issues get fixed. If you notice any other problems, please let us know in the comments.

When reporting a problem please let us know the following details:

  • Your Last.fm and Spotify usernames
  • Which device / OS are you encountering the problem on? (desktop or mobile)
  • What is the version number of the Spotify app you're using? (found in the settings page on mobile, and help -> about Spotify on desktop)
  • Are you using a Spotify free or premium account?

Cheers,
Team Last.fm

Nope, leave that as it is. That setting is just for using Spotify for playback on Last.fm.

Thanks for letting us know. We'll get this fixed in the next couple of minutes.

In the meantime, if you try and play a track then it should reconnect you automatically

Try to change your Last.fm password, then re-login to Last.fm with the new password in your Spotify app. But keep in mind that you do not have to use the internal scrobbling feature of your Spotify app anymore if you use the new Beta scrobbling by Last.fm.

Mine says it's scrobbling a track and then doesn't save it once it moves to the next song. I've tried to log out and log back into last.fm but it did nothing. Using Android with the Spotify app

Seems as if I disable scrobbling in the Spotify app, log out, and then enable the new scrobbling function at the last.fm settings page, when I log into Spotify the app has enabled scrobbling again (but now without proper password)

Is there a way to retrieve past scrobbles? It seems Last.fm didn’t scrobble the Spotify songs I played from May 9 to 17. I feel horrible having a gap in my listening history. -Rebelander

I've tried all the suggestions but scrobbles are still not being saved. lastfm shows the track currently scrobbling but that track disappears once the next track comes on. Is there any other way to fix this other than what has already been suggested?

I see that people here are having the same problem as I am... It shows a track being played, but does not scrobble it. It only shows the song thats currently being played, but it does not save that scrobble.

I have tried all the things that the instructions said to fix this problem, nothing worked.  I strongly hope this will be fixed!

This indicates that you are still using the internal scrobbling option of the Spotify desktop client which misleads users by still sending the track info "Scrobbling now" with yellow background, but actually does not scrobble anymore. You can disable it in the Preferences of the desktop client.

The new Last.fm feature of Spotify scrobbling does work for me at the moment, so try again to enable it in your Last.fm applications settings. If it still says "Connected", try starting the Spotify web player in your browser and then switch playback from the desktop client to the web player with the Spotify Connect feature.

It looks like, real time scrobbling doesn't work in this way. (iOs Spotify app) Is this correct?

The "Scrobbling now" track is shown as usual on your Last.fm profile on top of your Recent Tracks with a yellow background, but it will be shown as scrobbled at the end of the track now and not after 50% of the track length. Sometimes it might even disappear temporarily from there and will come back as soon as the next track gets scrobbled. This might happen during an ad or while switching devices with Spotify Connect.

Hello, I see the songs scrobbling with a yellow background but they don't be shown as scrobbled after %50 or %100 of the song.  What can be the problem? I am having this issue with both ios mobile and windows pc.

Concerning the new Spotify web player it can also be scrobbled in MS Edge and IE now which wasn't possible before, as there is no browser extension for them, and the internal scrobbling is not available anymore. This should come in handy for MS users at work or school where they are not allowed to install anything else.

It might also work with Chromecast devices and Spotify apps, by the way. I could not test this though, as I don't have a Chromecast device.

At the moment the new Beta feature is still broken which started about 11 hours ago. So please use the normal internal scrobbler option of your Spotify apps again or the browser extension if you use the Spotify web player. If you want to scrobble from Spotify Connect devices like the Xbox or Amazon Echo etc., try the online tool Listen Tracker which might work, but has problems with reaching the Spotify API limits, see this news.

Please do post any updates if it stops working again, losing scrobbles is something I really hate. It is literally the only reason I use Spotify rather than Google Play or Amazon music. I’ve been scrobbling since 2008 and would like to scrobble until I die :)

Hey James, awesome thread here!!

I did connect my wrong Spotify account to the Last.fm Spotify-scrobble application, and I can't figure out how to change it to the Spotify account I use /:

If I disconnect and reconnect the Spotify-scrobble under the application page, it automatically locks in to the previous account choosen (which was a miss-pick in my case)...

I don't see any given options to change the Spotify account for the Spotify-scrobble application.

I see that the Spotify-scrobble feature will only run through the application on the last.fm page in the future so I don't feel like ignorring this issue, since I am really happy to use this on a daily basis and plan to be using this awesome feature continiously in the future.

I sincerely hope that someone can give me a hint to how, and where I can go, to solve this account-scrobble issue because I have no clue at the moment.

Thanks for your help in advance !!!!

Kind regards

Jay

Glad to see it's back. Is this feature prone to breaking frequently though? I want to listen without worrying all the time if it'll scrobble. If so I'd probably go back to the internal scrobblers.

As far as I know, the problem was with the Spotify API, so Last.fm could only notify Spotify about it and wait. By the way, the only Spotify app with a cache for offline scrobbles is their desktop client, so there is no guarantee with their mobile or Spotify Connect apps either that you will not lose scrobbles. Furthermore the latter don't even have an internal scrobbling option, same for their web player.

Would it be doable for them to have Spotify Connect scrobbling internally?

Spotify Connect is a feature that is independent from the device, so the only way to "catch" scrobbling when switching devices is to provide an option which works with both APIs by connecting both accounts. Another method would be implementing internal scrobbling in each existing Spotify app which they probably will not do. See also the related ideas and threads on the Spotify Community which are mostly marked as "Not Right Now".

By the way, Deezer also provides scrobbling via their API and not in each app. You have to enable it in the settings of their web player, but then it will also work in their mobile apps and Windows 10 app.

It looks like local only files (ie not available on Spotify at all) do not scrobble. They did with the app config method
With both methods enabled the tracks scrobble. That's good that it falls back to the method that works.
I also haven't noticed any duplicate scrobbles with both methods enabled which is also good to see, great work on that

During testing duplicates happened when switching devices with Spotify Connect, e.g. from desktop client to Android phone, but only for the track that played while switching.

And it is true that local files do not scrobble with the enabled Beta feature alone if they are not available on Spotify. This might also be caused by a simple spelling error either on the user's or Spotify's side or e.g. a missing album, so Spotify cannot match it to an existing track.

Not scrobbling local files that are missing from Spotify are a deal-breaker.  I have a playlist of Spotify songs and playlist of local files built in Spotify.  Both are nested in the same folder.  When you shuffle play the folder, it mixes from both lists.  All day long I get a mix of local and streamed songs.  Something that does not scrobble both is of no use at all.

This is the best thing I've read all day. Missing scrobbles on Echo, Google Home, Xbox, etc., has really been bumming me out, but this seems to work perfectly. Thank you!

Still doesn't work. Wont scrobble on spotify. Even on my iphone it's logged out and I can't log back in. Is there something wrong with the server? On aimp I can't reconnect after disconnecting.

Hi Dimitri, what's your username?

Can you try disconnecting and reconnecting to Spotify scrobbling in your application settings here:  https://www.last.fm/settings/applications

It should say "Connected as " and your spotify account name (if you have several accounts, please make sure it's using the correct one).

"Even on my iphone it's logged out and I can't log back in."

I'm not sure what you mean by this.  You only need to log in here, and it should scrobble with every device you use.

Does not work for me at all.  I removed the connection in settings and closed Spotify, connected my account with the new beta, it successfully connected and listed my name as the connected account, and I reopened Spotify.  I then played multiple songs, and none of them scrobbled.  I had to add them manually using Open Web Scrobbler.  I have tried it this morning on both my iPhone and my desktop PC.  Nothing happens.

If looking at my scrobble information (I do not know what it records in the background), you can see an example of the event today.  The Grave Digger - Keep on Rocking was scrobbled using the app on my phone.  I had to manually add the next two songs because nothing happened, and then you can see when I switched back to the app on the phone instead of the beta, it started working again with Twisted Sister - The Power and the Glory.

I have now connected, disconnected, and reconnected several times from two different PCs over the course of two different days.  I have gotten no scrobbles through the beta using 3 different devices.

I'm sorry it's not been working for you Charles, to help us debug, could you give us a bit more info?
1. Your Last.fm username
2. If you have a Spotify Premium account, could you see if Spotify playback works through the Last.fm site? https://www.last.fm/settings/website#playback, it uses the same Spotify API that we use for scrobbling.

Yes, I have a premium account.  I did not have Spotify Playback enabled previously.  I had it checked in the settings as the my playback option, but I had not gone through with the actual connection/permission with Spotify.  When I connected that PLUS set the beta scrobbling connection, the beta scrobbling immediately started working.

If some others who are having trouble can chime in, does this fix it?  If so, you may want to adjust the instructions.

Later today I am going to test the local file recording a bit more intensely.

As I mentioned earlier today above, I was able to get the beta Spotify scrobbler to work once I first enabled the Spotify playback.  However, I’ve encountered some issues.

First, it does not seem to handle transitions correctly.  I was scrobbling from my iPhone using a Bluetooth earpiece using the beta just fine.  I shut off the earpiece, got in my car, and the Bluetooth connection to the stereo picked up.  It did not scrobble a single song that was played through the stereo; I had to manually add each scrobble using Open Web Scrobbler.

I also continue to have the issue with local files described at https://getsatisfaction.com/lastfm/topics/local-files-in-spotify-inconsistently-scrobbling

.  Using only the beta scrobbler, with last.fm scrobbling turned off in Spotify on the PC desktop client, I have the same problem that only about 50% of local files actually scrobble.   This is not that I am scrobbling offline.  I am able to play one song streaming through Spotify and queue a local file and back and forth.  Internet connection is just fine.  The behavior is inconsistent.  Often, you can see the local track scrobbling on the website, but when the song ends, it disappears as if it were never there and does not scrobble.  Other times, it does not appear to be scrobbling while the song is playing and it does not scrobble.  Sometimes, the local file seems to be scrobbling and then does actually scrobble.  And finally, sometimes the local file does not appear to be scrobbling while playing but does scrobble when the song is finished.  This is a new issue that just started with the last Spotify update.  Again, this same behavior occurs whether using the built in last.fm connection in the PC desktop Spotify application or using the new beta scrobbler with the built in connection turned off.

Out of curiosity, I turned on both the built in connection AND the beta scrobbler.  The behavior still occurs but slightly less frequent than 50/50.  For example, I played MP3 files of the Scorpions’ Pure Instinct album (which is not on Spotify) using the Local Files playback option in Spotify.  Of the 11 tracks, it scrobbled 8 correctly.  For whatever reason, it did not scrobble “Stone In My Shone”, “Soul Behind the Face”, or “You And I”.  Again, I had to manually add these using Open Web Scrobbler.

So far, I have not had any problems scobbling local files played through Spotify on my iPhone.  They seem to scrobble 100% of the time.

I am using a Premium Spotify account and paid last.fm account (blackfalconky).  Please do not dismiss this as a “Spotify desktop problem.”  It is occurring with that and the new beta.  There is something currently broken regarding local files.

Thanks for the info, I'm doing some testing of my own and it seems that it only scrobbles local files that Spotify recognises from it's own catalogue.  I was able to listen & scrobble to a whole album flawlessly, but not tracks that it doesn't recognise or are tagged differently.

You can see in the example below the tracks with the artist and album name greyed out won't scrobble.  This is because they're tagged differently (correctly) to what Spotify has.

We're using their API to get your play history for scrobbling, so it might be that they simply don't report local tracks that don't exist in the Spotify catalogue, or they're handled differently.  Depending on how they've implemented it, it may be problematic to support -- I've raised it with our developers to investigate further.

Thank you for looking into this and investigating!

I am getting different results with the "grayed out" songs.  It will scrobble some of them, even songs Spotify does not recognize.  For example, just to test, I took a song MP3 Spotify did not recognize and mistagged it (misspelled the song), and it scrobbled just fine (with the wrong name).  Those may be the songs affected by this, but it has not been 100% failure.

Also, last.fm is getting the data on these songs while playing in most cases.  They show up as "scrobbling now" on the website, and I can only assume that is coming through the API.

I am still experiencing 100% success using the iPhone Spotify app connected to last.fm when scrobbling local files.

Again, thank you for taking this seriously and looking into it.  I know for my own listening habits, this is an enormous problem.

Hmm, that's definitely not happening for me -- the greyed out tracks don't show now playing, and don't scrobble.  This is on the spotify desktop client right?

Do you have a reproducible example we can try?  E.g. If you give me an artist, album, track name, I can rename a test mp3 and see what it does.

Yeah, sure can.  Yesterday, I played the entirety of the Scorpions' Pure Instinct album.  They are greyed out (unrecognized) by Spotify in the Local Files section.  When I play them, they show up as "Scrobbling Now".  8/11 scrobbled, 3 did not.  “Stone In My Shone”, “Soul Behind the Face”, and “You And I” did not scrobble.  Also, I changed the MP3 tags on one them (forgot which one) and misspelled it just to see what would happen.  It showed "Scrobbling now" with the wrong name and logged it.

And yes, using the the Spotify desktop client.  I have tried using the last.fm connection built in as well as the beta scrobbler with similar results.  Having BOTH turned on gives better results but still not 100%.

If it helps at all to look at the database, my account is blackfalconky.  You can see the first local file scrobbled at 8:50 a.m. CST on January 22.  The entries for the songs above were added manually with Open Web Scrobbler.

Thanks, I'll check in a bit.  To confirm, this track never scrobbles for you in spotify when played as a local track:

Seems to be the case.  I played "Stone In My Shoe" and "Oh Girl (I Wanna Be With You)" from local files.  Both showed Scrobbling Now on the last.fm website while playing through Spotify desktop application.  As soon as the second song started, "Stone In My Shoe" disappeared and did not scrobble.  Instead, it showed "Oh Girl (I Wanna Be With You)" as scrobbling now, and when it completed, it scrobbled.

Hmm, ok so here's what I've tried:
  • Renamed a 30s test track to match the id tags of Scorpion Stone in Shoe.
  • Scrobbled it with the foobar to check that there's nothing wrong with the track itself or tags.
With the beta:  Spotify doesn't have this track in their catalogue -- it's greyed out, and I didn't expect it to scrobble.   Tried a bunch of times, nothing happened, which is consistent with what our developers have since told me -- spotify is not sending any local track data to us. Though not what we want, this is the expected behaviour.

So, the question is why are you still seeing now playing / scrobbling now?  Only thing it can be is the Spotify client. So, I tried entering my account details in spotify preferences...  What happens for me is that it updates now playing and then scrobbles when the track finishes.  I tried multiple times, and it scrobbled without issue....  ̄\_(ツ)_/ ̄

So unfortunately it looks like the beta doesn't support local files at all (sorry for wasting your time, I thought it worked); and the spotify client is at best inconsistent right now, which is what other people have reported since the recent update.  Either way, both cases rely on spotify fixing scrobbling support, either in their api, or in their implementation of scrobbling. :/

I'm using the desktop application of Spotify and am getting double scrobbling again, not with every track but every one in five tracks (or thereabouts).  Is there a glitch with Last.fm and the Desktop application of Spotify at the moment? Its only started doing this in the last week or so.  I did all the scrobbling instructions mentioned at the beginning of this thread as well.

It's rather the normal and expected behaviour if you use both the internal scrobbling and the new Spotify Scrobbling feature by Last.fm. That is why it is recommended in the announcement to disable the internal scrobbling except if there are temporary problems or you want to use the private session feature of Spotify without any scrobbling.

I've been having that issue with scrobbling on my mobile app for Android from Spotify. Works on my laptop, but not on my phone (where I do 50% of my listening). Nothing I've tried to fix the issue has worked.  It will show on the top of my scrobbles list the song I'm listening to, but won't save.

I seem to have a kind of related issue. I’ve tried this feature but decided I only wanted certain devices to scrobble. And now I can’t seem to turn it off. I have disconnected in last.fm and revoked access in Spotify. Checked the scrobble settings for each device but still all the tracks that I listen to on any device are being scrobbled. Is there a way to turn this off and go back to just the devices that I’ve set to scrobble?

Hi everyone,

I'm using spotify connect, and like many other people here, my scrobbles are not uploaded to last.fm.

However... I noticed the moment that I start playing a song via the normal spotify desktop application, all the song played through spotify connect before are immediately scrobbled (even with the correct timestamp)!

I hope this helps for futher development and maybe someone else who has this problem can try to reproduce what I notice?

Thanks for all the great work!

I found a solution to scrobble via Spotify iOs app. You have to enter data for the "old" scrobbling. It doesn't normally scrobble, then. If you're though a playlist, continue playing by activating replay mode (otherwise, the last track you listened to will, for whatever reason, not be scrobbled). Then, deactivate scrobbling for 1-2 seconds and reactivate it. It kind of cloud-scrobbles then, most of the times.

Of course, this is inconvenient and feels like 2007 all over again, but at least you don't lose scrobbles.

I'm a Premium Spotify user and a LastFM subscriber. Darkwingduckie7. And this has been going on for weeks but has really gotten ridiculous in the last 2-3 days. I have an Android mobile, have the latest version of Spotify (updated 2 days ago). It just went scrobble. I'll get one song or two to record and then nothing. So I do the trouble shooting steps. Takes like 7 minutes to get through everything. It works for a couple ofsongs. Then stops scrobbling again. I did the troubleshooting steps 3 times today. I have 1 song an hour recorded where I've been listening to Spotify all evening. I saw some posts that this is fixed now. No, it is not fixed. And if it's fixed for others, someone needs to get back to me regarding my specific account then. At least respond to paid subscribers.

Edit: I noticed it doesn't scrobble after I pause an audio. When I come back and change tracks, it doesn't scrobble. So I have to exit Spotify, disconnect, reconnect, and then open Spotify. Every. Single. Time. Done it probably 5 times today alone. Please respond and let me know if there is a permanent fix. This only happens on an Android app, not on desktop.

Pleased that you guys are working on this, this is my only gripe with the new scrobbler. Have to double check my listens every day. Thanks for the effort you all are putting in to fix it!

I'm running into double scrobbles anytime I pause a song.  Luckily I keep my artists played for the week open in a tab and can find the doubles easily.

I use N7 Player, I ́m old school not a big fan of Spotify, I rather have the music on my phone, so..... since yesterday i cant scrobble with any of these programs:
-Scroball - they are not saving anymore
-Simple last - IT saves a different artist from what your alistening
-The offical LAst.fm - Dont save any scrobble.
-Scrobb - Dont save any scrobble.

Is there any app that i can use? Everything was fine yesterday, but since that crash or wahtever happens, nothing works normally.
I dont know if this is relate to lastfm issue or the new android uopdate.
