Spotify Scrobbling (Beta)

Hello everyone,

We've created a new way to scrobble with Spotify. Instead of configuring each application or device separately, you now only need to link Spotify to Last.fm in your applications settings page. Once connected you'll be able to scrobble wherever you use Spotify. This brings back scrobbling to Spotify's web player, and opens up the ability to scrobble from Spotify Connect devices like games consoles, TVs, Amazon Echo, etc.

This new feature is in beta, and there are some known issues, so please read the following before connecting:

Known issues:

Local files don't update "Scrobbling now"

Scrobbling local files is now supported (provided tracks have a valid artist and title id3 tags), however 'Scrobbling now' isn't currently displayed.  This means if you mostly listen to local files on Spotify, it can appear as if you're not scrobbling until the tracks finish playing.  This will be fixed in a forthcoming update.

Offline scrobbling is limited to the last 50 tracks played

This is due to the fact that the Spotify API only allows us to access the last 50 tracks from your play history.

(Spotify free) Tracks don't scrobble until the adverts finish

This happens because the tracks you play in Spotify aren't actually scrobbled until the next track starts.

Occasional double scrobble

We're aware of some instances where a track you've previously played will be resubmitted to your profile at a later time by the offline scrobbler (usually when you open spotify in another device and play a track).  We've fixed the vast majority of cases where this can happen, however there are still some rare cases where it's can happen still -- typically for tracks that have been played for over 30 seconds and then paused for over 30 minutes.

Scrobbling works initially, but then you keep getting 'disconnected' on a regular basis

We've been investigating this issue thoroughly, and have been taking steps to mitigate it where we can.   We're still trying to determine exactly what triggers this problem, but suspect that the underline issue is something to do with the way Spotify handles tracking and switching between devices.  We also believe it's more likely to happen on older / slower systems, and when resuming tracks that have been paused for over 30+ minutes. This problem has been flagged with Spotify to investigate as well.

If you encounter this issue, we recommend the following:
  • Play the track all the way through and let the next track start -- in some cases "Scrobbling now" isn't displayed correctly when you start a session, but the track will still scrobble. Scrobbling will work normally from the second track onwards.
  • If that doesn't work, we recommend that you Close down / exit the Spotify application and then restart it.  In most cases this should fix the problem.
  • Actively switching to another device (e.g. mobile to desktop, or vice versa), or opening the devices menu and starting a track, can also fix the problem.
  • If that doesn't work, please go to your Last.fm application settingsDisconnect Spotify scrobbling, and then Connect your account again.

Scrobbling from Spotify isn't working anywhere

Some users have also reported that they cannot scrobble at all from any device, or that while it's working OK from mobile, it's not working from desktop.  We're aware of your feedback and are looking into it.

Some things to double-check:
  • You're using the latest version of Spotify.
  • The Last.fm login is no longer available from the 'Social' heading of Spotify settings page (this is expected). If it's still there, please disable it and update your Spotify app.
  • You're connected to Spotify Scrobbling here: https://www.last.fm/settings/applications
  • On the same page, where it says "Connected as", you're linked to the same Spotify account you're using on your device.
  • In your Spotify account settings, "Last.fm Scrobbler" is listed as an approved application.
We've heard unconfirmed reports that logging out of Spotify and back in again can help, as can resetting your Spotify password.  It's also been suggested that logging into Spotify via email & password, rather than through Facebook can fix the issue, though we've yet to verify this.

----

We'll update this post as these issues get fixed. If you notice any other problems, please let us know in the comments.

When reporting a problem please let us know the following details:

  • Your Last.fm and Spotify usernames
  • Which device / OS are you encountering the problem on? (desktop or mobile)
  • What is the version number of the Spotify app you're using? (found in the settings page on mobile, and help -> about Spotify on desktop)
  • Are you using a Spotify free or premium account?

Cheers,
Team Last.fm

Since yesterday, i got this problem en today about half an hour ago it happened again. I had to disconnect and re-connect the app in my LFM profile settings to get it to work. I have the latest version of W10 home fully up to date and always the latest Spotify version. Before yesterday I never had this problem.

However about a month ago Spotify advised me to get a new password as there might be something strange going on although it did not looked as if my account had been hacked. What I saw in Spotify recently listened-section was playback of one or two tracks that i never listened to at times i was not using the app. All tracks and songs are bij acts that have very few listeners. There are more Spotify-premium users who have this issue since januari but there is no official respons other than that Spotify is investigating these situations.

Works very unreliably if at all since a couple of weeks. Disconnecting works sometimes.
It this something that'll be actually be fixed?
Or will this be tossed as it's not worth the effort?

Some sort of comment would be appreciated. :)

I found a track at Spotify that causes a disconnect > INXS, Michael Hutchence, Mylene Farmer - Never tear us apart - mystify soundtrack version- single (not officially released yet but for some time could be found and added to the queue)

The song is empty, does not play (anymore?) it just stops playback and after this no new songs are scrobbled.

This one was in the queue each time the disconnect happened for me.

That's interesting - can you tell me the spotify uri for that track please?  Or is it gone?  Do you remember roughly when you last listened to it? (and your timezone, so we can compare this with our logs).

It's no longer in my history in Spotify but you are in luck cause it's still in my recommendations

spotify:track:2dcZU6QkekeB71U54FNZ5x

I get an error in Spotify if I try to open the album page for that track

timezone: Amsterdam, so GMT +2 summertime > i think i listened to it around the time I was listening to other recommendations like #LIFTEMUP greko track and room to fall by marshello > I know I had to add scrobbles for Night Moves - new album cause it was not scrobbled. Around midnight last night, so about 21 hours ago at this moment of posting

Thanks, was this track added to your Release Radar? If it's still there, a screenshot would be great, as well as a link to the playlist (can you copy the playlist and make it public?)

i can still add it to the top my waiting list, would you want me to see if this will still create an error?

the Release Radar can't be made public but this is the link, not sure if anyone else would be able to see it.

spotify:playlist:37i9dQZEVXblijYI16EgX4

Since it's about to be officially released on Friday (tomorrow) this error might only still occur today, since in Australia and Oceania that is much earlier than here in Amsterdam

If I try to open the albumpage connected to that song I still get an error: that the album can't be found.

In a few minutes I will play this track to see if it still provokes this disconnect-problem :
Edit > it does no longer stall Spotify, now it immediately skips to next song.

At this moment the status of this track bij INXS has changed. The album (single) page connected to that track is now visible.

In  my Release Radar this track is still visible but now can't be played-back officially, the lettering of this track is now a different type of grey to indicate this new status.

just to inform.

Around midnight here in Amsterdam ( GMT+2 ) I expect Spotify will per usual refresh my Release Radar with an update.

So anything that needs to be done regarding that playlist will have to be done before that.

Edit:
just noticed that when I tried to play this INXS track earlier today it skipped but also still caused a disconnect > so it had to add scrobbles manually.

again a bout a minute ago 15:30 (GMT+2) i tried to play it and again as expected it did not. It was skipped again, and it looks like it did not disconnect Spotify from Last.fm

Thanx to anyone involved in getting this fixed :)

Sorry, that I had not noticed this problem earlier in the week that this track was the cause of the disconnections, only after the third time I noticed this pattern.

But next time I know to be more alert and drop in here faster.

Yeah, I can't reproduce the disconnect with that track - it just skips over it. We'll continue to investigate anyway and if you find another track like it, do let me know.

Yes, today that buggy track was release today officially and without any problem as per expected.

I'll keep an eye on my Release Radar playlist but so far it was the only track ever that caused this disconnecting-effect.

thanx anyway for looking in to it.

Jon, Community & Customer Services > there's one more twist to this buggy-track.

Today the album was released from which it comes. Officially on several sites a complet tracklist is to be found: https://filmmusicreporter.com/2019/06/11/mystify-a-musical-journey-with-michael-hutchence-soundtrack...

however on iTunes and Spotify there are NO individual tracks. See here spotify:album:5QkfOgq9w5W91ZhpnQ31pA > just Side A / Side B / Side C / Side D - just thinking out loud. The buggy song (the album closer) thus has no begin point  from which to start playback! So Spotify stops, seems very logic.

That would leaf the question: Why that halting of playback would cause Last.fm settings to disconnect . It must be some kind of loop-terminator / maybe some kind of anti-ddos setting. If Spotify send to many begin point input that somewhere there is a kill-switch to get it out of the loop?

Hope this helps in any way

Hi, my account suddenly stops scrobbling suddenly without any apparent reason whatsoever. I've tried re-connecting my last.fm account to Spotify; re-installing Spotify, none of them works.

Today once again no scrobbles coming in from Spotify, until about 01:00 (Amsterdam GMT+2) it worked but today it does not. Adding through universal scrobbler does work, so it seems yet again a issue at Spotify. Looks like a spontaneous disconnect, although in LFM settings everything looks fine.

I've tried the disconnect and reconnect thing but so far without effect, the second time I did this workaround fix it looks to work again.

the last song to listen to when after or during which the problem occurred was Underworld - Schiphol Test - from the album Drift Episode 4 "Space"

Listening on my PC - nothing scrobbles. Switching to iphone - it scrobbles and all PC tracks appear magically. I did not change a thing, I did not even restart my computer since it last worked, not even restarted the spotify app (windows 10, latest spotify)! Meanwhile I did log off and on, deleted the app, reinstalled, turned private session and back - NOTHING. (iphone and PC using the same WIFI)
I am really not very happy about the fact I need to switch to iphone every 50 tracks, because that's the maximum that gets back-scrobbled.
This feature has been introduced TWO F*CKING YEARS AGO and it keeps breaking and breaking and then stops working for weeks. Get it to work finally! I am not even using spotify for half a year and at least 30-40% of the time, scrobbling does not work!

Hey, I'm about 95% sure this isn't Last.FM. Same thing happens to me, because the Spotify desktop app disconnects from the internet every once in a while too. The way I usually fix it is the hit the  button and it'll reconnect to the internet.

Same here. On my phone and PC. Randomly stopped scobbling since yesterday 11AM.

I did everything. Uninstall, reinstall. Disconnect, reconnect. All that jazz. Nothing works.

Spotify version: 1.1.10.540.gfcf0430f on PC

Still the same - iphone scrobbles, desktop doesn't. But now nothing from desktop gets scrobbled when switched to phone. Latest Win10 App. I did not change a thing on my computer.
It doesnt help to turn on the webplayer btw.

But who are we talking to? Nobody seems to care.

I've just realised there's no connection at all between Last FM and my Spotify app. I tried playing a song on their website (so it forces a connection to Spotify) and this is what I get:

Nobody cares at all. Had to reinstall spotify on pc  yesterday, after not using it ever since scrobbling didnt work at all. It worked for 24hours and right in the middle of listening a playlist - no scrobbling anymore. Switched to phone while playing - what a magic, just played song appeared. Seems to work for 2 songs back on PC - bam! songs gone, stopped scrobbling. Phone trick does not help this time anymore so scrobbling stopped overall again.

for two damn years now they are not able to just get this to work properly.

Instead - with the "restart" yesterday, scrobbles appeared on my lastfm I NEVER EVER LISTENED TO!
