Hi,

I wonder if Spotify is the only streaming service currently integrated with the new last.fm. I hope you'll continue adding more of them, including Google Play Music which I use myself.

We really need this, it would be amazing to have Tidal or Rdio as well, I would definitely start to use it on a daily basis.

Hi Steve, Pietrus;

Thank you for your feedback and suggestions.

Currently the last.fm players are "powered" by Youtube and Spotiy content. We do intend indeed to add other sources of audio content in the future.

Hi, thanks for your feedback!

Currently the new persistent player streams from both Spotify and Youtube -- if there are multiple audio sources, you'll see an arrow next to the service's icon on the playback bar which let's you toggle between them.

We're looking into supporting other services in the future (audio and music video), so let us know which services you use and would most like to see supported.  Speaking personally, I'd love to see Soundcloud and Google play supported.  I'm also wondering if local playback could be supported as well.

Edit for further clarification:

If a YouTube link is available, you will see a drop-down option from the player at the top of the page, and choosing YouTube from the player will attempt to play videos for that session.  If we haven't been able to match a YouTube link to the track, you won't see the arrow.

We plan on adding more streaming partners and the ability for users to set a preferred source in the future.

Hi,

pity that yours and Pellitero's statements contradict each other...

Instead for asking here 'let us know which services you use and would most like to see supported' create a survey with a prompt to fill it on logon to lastfm so more people can vote. Or, even better, look at your stats - don't you store information from what service/application we do scrobble? Use it...

Jon,  how does one force youtube to be the default streaming source?  I don't have (nor want) a spotify account.  When I attempt to play music all I get is a dialog to install spotify.

I don't want to install anything either. I was using last.fm at work, which was fabulous precisely because I didn't have to download anything. Now, I get nothing.

Jon, where is this supposed arrow? I don't see one: http://chadjohnson.io/static/lastfm.png. There simply is no arrow dude -- you're pulling this out of your ass. When I click "Play your mix" it tries to use Spotify and just says "Connecting Spotify" at the top. There is NO arrow.

This really pisses me off. I'm canceling my subscription immediately and looking for another service now. Screw you last.fm. Spotify pulled this shit by refactoring their UI, and they removed a ton of features. Now you are doing it, and you've immediately lost my confidence and me as a customer. And I've enjoyed using last.fm since 2009 -- but no more. Good bye.

This is one of the known issues for the devs called "missing fallback to YouTube". As far as I know, there already is a ticket for this, so it should be fixed soon.

Blimey - an "official' response! Lucky you! I haven't had any responses to my questions - wondering if I've posted them in the wrong place? But I will add that I can stream from both Spotify and iTunes.

Hi everyone, sorry if there was any confusion in my last post.

To clarify, I said " if there are multiple audio sources, you'll see an arrow".  If a YouTube link is available, you will see a drop-down option from the player at the top of the page, and choosing YouTube from the player will attempt to play videos for that session.  If we haven't been able to match a YouTube link to the track, you won't see the arrow.

Dude, there are lots of songs where there are tracks on YouTube, but the arrow just never shows. I've tried playing the songs in my play history that were definitely played via YouTube, and no arrow appears. The arrow never appears when attempting to play ANY songs. It only appears after I initiate playing using Spotify -- which is just not a solution.

Do I understand correctly that it is intentional for all my machines -- none of which have Spotify installed nor are they capable of running it securely and without physical fricking damage -- to just hang for several minutes and then do nothing except display a magical arrow (which does not in fact appear)?

What clearly bugs me is on your 'What's New' page you mention ' seamless desktop-based listening experience by pulling in music from multiple sources ' There aren't any sources other than Spotify. I did get a pop up window for a song through YouTube but it didn't scrobble the song. What really is starting to annoy me about this whole Spotify thing is it DOESN'T have half the artists in my library. I can no longer play certain artists because they DON"T EXIST on Spotify. Thank God I can use another source vk.com which was already on my computer along with an extension that will scrobble onto my profile before the launch of this unfinished site. vk has an extensive library that rivaled the OLD last.fm we had access to just a week ago.
I truly hope that in the near future if you want to keep people here you offer something better than lame Spotify. We had a great place to find awesome music from just starting out, unheard of, even obscure artists that aren't lamestream like the artists on Spotify and you ruined it for a lot of people. It truly blows that I can't play what I want to, but only what YOU allow. Even this new Library Explorer only finds artists that Spotify knows and skips over all the rest. Which to me is disappointing and rather sad.

If I presented a job half done to a client, with pieces missing from the finished product with half promises that they would be returning when I finished the job I would expect to be fired on THE spot. Or as a Presidential candidate here in the US would say: " YOUR FIRED! "

Is there a way to bypass connecting to Spotify? I can't chose Youtube as my preferred source until I connect to Spotify and none of my browsers are able to connect to Spotify, I keep getting "Bad Request" error.

As many people have mentioned - it's not possible to use last.fm without spotify. It plays one song for me on 'play similar artists' option and then tries to connect spotify. I cannot do anything to stop it apart from reloading the page when with a luck it will grab the first song from youtube instead of spotify.

I don't want fallback to YouTube. If you have the track in your Spotify library it should be playing it not YouTube. If I want to see a group I go to a live event. I have had on numerous occasions been listening and music would stop playing yet last.fm said I was scrobbling a track from YouTube -- yes YouTube was playing something that had the group name and track title in the video but it would not be the track. All this while the track actually was in my Spotify library because Spotify has all of my iTunes library in it.

Tidal would be more than welcome
anyway, it would be just great if you could also switch back to the arrow next to the service's icon on the playback bar
but it's also good to have the choice which service to use as a default at http://www.last.fm/settings/website#playback

Deezer and Rdio, because they are in more countries than Spotify now and also offer free ad-supported streaming of a huge catalogue. I think both have an open API as well. Groove formerly known as Xbox Music would be nice, too, but they afford a subscription. On the other hand the new Windows 10 app will help them being installed literally everywhere.

Concerning the missing dropdown arrow besides the provider logo to choose from Spotify or YouTube: you can only see it when a track is playing which is available on both sites.

Thanks for taking time to reply. Merits repeating: this only works if Spotify is installed in the first place. Some (many) of us don't want to install Spotify. Haven't been able to listen to my streams from the Website since launch. Shouldn't have to install spotify to be able to.

Would it be possible to choose a streaming service provider, skip the rest -specifically for now: choose Spotify over YouTube, or vice-versa?
That way we could get to stream from the last.fm page without interruptions.

I like that idea .. I don't care for Youtube, If I'm running music at work .. I don't think I want a video to pop up on my screen. At home I'm not running on Optic or even a T line  so being a power user it doesn't take to long for Youtube to suck up bandwidth.  Ah such is life.  I would like very much having message rules  for filtering out what we don't want at anytime. Or even a block.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Please allow us to start radio stations without using Spotify.

With the new release, I cannot initiate playing a radio station without using Spotify. After initiating a station using Spotify, I can then (and only then) select YouTube. But if I refresh the page, then my selection disappears, and I have to restart the station using Spotify, again.

So, please implement the following:

1) I should be able to start a radio station using YouTube without having Spotify installed, without having a Spotify account, and without using Spotify at all.

2) My setting as to whether to use Spotify, Youtube, or whatever streaming service should remain intact when I reload the site. This setting should also remain intact across browsers and across computers (so it should be stored with my account and not in a cookie or localStorage).

I should just come work for you and fix these problems. I have 15 years HTML/CSS/JavaScript/API/backend/database experience, and I could and would totally clean this site up, inside and out.

something is funky with this.. why doesn't the track selected just play like it did before?

Why do I see it try to load spotify, then just fail?  this is something that has to be worked out for those of us who use last.fm to find new music. (btw, spotify opens and says "Link not found" or "Bad Request")

Less 3rd party steaming (i.e. usually doesn't have YOUR music choices) and more oldschool direct on-site plays please.

Come on.. why is this new site MUCH LESS USEFUL than the old one?????????????

In my case, I used youtube to listen to songs at the artist radio stations everyday, because spotify is blocked here on my office, but now I can't do that, that's really annoying.
I would love to be able to stream from Digitally Imported, Soundcloud, and Mixcloud.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled I haven't seen anyone bring this one up, why can't we use third party apps?.

I haven't seen anyone bring this question up. Why can't we use a third party app? Why are we FORCED to use Spotify as the ONLY way of listening to music on to last.fm? On the OLD site in our settings there was an apps list of applications that we could connect to Last.fm like SoundCloud or even Chrome extensions like Lastique that would connect to last.fm without having to use Spotify. Those settings no longer exists as they once did, why? Why are we being forced to use ONLY Spotify? In the old last.fm I was able to find numerous unknown, just starting out artists and labels that offered awesome music that wasn't the main stream music you find on sites like Spotify. I have sadly found that almost half of what I once listened to I can no longer play because Spotify doesn't have them in their lame, limited so called 'Library.' There isn't even a 'play' button next to the song.

I guess I was lucky. I had vk.com on my computer and Lastique, a Google Chrome extension already installed before you tossed us, unannounced in to a half assed, unfinished site with NO warning of what was coming. Lucky for me, both still work and scrobble on to the the new site without me having to use Spotify. Why can't anyone else do that? Why alienate half of your fan base this way? I feel like you took a really cool site where we were able to listen to what we wanted to on what ever platform we chose to a dictated site where ONLY Spotify is allowed. And that's a real shame. You turned a really cool site to discover new music with an awesome social network of likewise individuals into another Twitter/MySpace/FaceBook lame site that only plays lame stream music. You might as well re name the site LameIFy.

Sorry for venting. But when are you going to allow another app in our settings besides Lameify to scrobble music?

I've got some new tracks I'd like to scrobble using Soundcloud, but they're not going through to my library.  This is an intermittent fault, so I don't know what is causing the problem.  Can you please advise? as I'd like to be able to scrobble these tracks successfully.
