The ideas about shoutboxes

  • Under Consideration
We get some useless imo features like answering and likes, which gives us feeling we are more in Facebook than Last.fm. But I have two new ideas, and say what you think about adding it.

1. Showing only one answer to a comment, and for more we should click special link/whatever.
The reason is that many answers to answers to (...) occupy too much space.

2. Option to edit comments. I always wondered why wasn't it on Last.fm when changes like "likes" comes.

So, what you think about it?

PS: I'm sick about these new features. I know it's not unnecessary to write it here, but.. it's sad that my dislike is considered like "moronic malcontent". Looking at new shoutboxes give me thought that there's much more spam than was before. Like on Joy Division site.

Thanks for your feedback Tom.

1. Yep, you're right.  We're planning to add this in a later update.

2. It's under consideration, along with other shoutbox features; but for now you can always delete and then repost your edited shout.

With regards to shoutbox spam and other anti-social behaviour, we're monitoring how people use the new features and will make appropriate changes depending on how things go.

One thing that's currently in the works is improving the ignore list, so that shouts by ignored users aren't displayed, and they can't reply or interact with your shouts.

Thanks for answer! It's nice to know what staff is planning and about these "ignore list" features - it will be nice improvement if it is implemented.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Make previously posted shouts/comments editable (?).

I don't know if this has been brought up before, but I have an idea where we should be able to edit a previously posted shout or reply... Instead of having to delete the whole previous comment and post a new one.

Patrick - yeah, I was just giving my view on your topic, in the end the devs have the last word in everything. I just see how many old users deleted their accounts, and don't wanna see shoutboxes clearing themselves up... it will be sad thing, honestly.

carnagexcandy - I'd say I'm also for notifications after "liking" my comment, but after few seconds I realise, I'd have a bit too much notifications daily then (cons of being quite everywhere). But the additional notification option chosen in settings would be indeed nice.

Well if you're an avid Facebook user and have a lot of friends you'll always have tons of likes, hearts and notifications of such... After awhile you get use to it, and tbh I'd rather know who likes what shout on my page. But I'm sure these ideas might be implemented in 5 years from now when the internet has moved on to some other kind of notification system, haha. Maybe the option of turning these notifications on and off would be best.

That's quite the reason, why I neglected to use Facebook, and why I both like and hate this service - it's precise and all, but it can come to an absurd, if you're active user. And that's why Last.fm is precious thing, because the amount of notifications is almost ideal - while being really active user, I get not that many notifications to feel overburdened, but also I get enough to feel I live inside this beautiful site.

And I fully agree with the information of who likes your posts - as for notifications it can be double-edged axe, hurting as much as giving, that short list of people liking your posts / shouts on your shoutbox is great. It's quite "facebookish" idea, but it's interesting and useful.

Although your thought it will be implemented after 5 years is funny, I doubt it as this topic got "under consideration" status, haha.

I'm not a fan of Facebook either. But the general masses do use it, and in order to stay relevant certain features need to be used so the site wouldn't look "antiquated". I guess it's all up to the developers and how much they want to 'modernize' the site so people will keep signing up. Another option would to have tabs in the notification area. You can click "Shouts" "Replies" "Likes" etc... to see who replied/liked to what. I'm kinda OCD like that, so things that have categories matched with subcategories makes me happy. >.>

Well in LFM terms "under consideration" can mean anywhere from 6 months to 2+ years. :P Maybe I'm just a sucker and want to see how the site will progress, but I really don't see myself leaving any time soon.

The like function on last.fm has had one really big positive effect, in my opinion, at least, which is that there's less copypasting of That One Really Cool Shout [insert the # of times it's been repeated], which means that reading shoutboxes to see some different opinions is a lot more fun than it used to be. I'm still seeing that happen, but not as much as before.
