Why are the questions being on the "NEW"  "About Me" section just being completely blanked ? It is so rude, makes the staff etc here look like they don't care one bit. If the reasons are ligit then fine, yeah ok we understand a bit. I used to love my "About Me" I had got set up over the months. Used to love to see how it changed over time. The thing i find very hard to understand is the whole attitude about the change to 200 character plain text limit. I can only imagine what people who developed programs / widgets etc for it must be thinking. Also think of the costs involved in hosting servers / donating / subscribing from users to support get better features from them. gone, without disregard or the people involved. The whole thing is really saddening. The silence & lack of news / replies from the staff make it 10 times worse IMO.
I have been using last.fm since 2006, seen lots of changes. I recall the last changeover, thought it was the end of the world but they came good. Only hoping the same this time out. I love last.fm or used to love it with the customable "About Me" . Now most of the profiles look exactly the same. A real shame, at the moment. I would hate to have to turn my back on this site but........ that time is very close.

They don't even write their favorite "I'm afraid that's yet to be determined". Nothing.

I have a question to some of "very old" users of Last.fm ('cause I've been on Last.fm for two years): was staff that much ignoring people and did they so many changes which broke this site, when this "2006" patch went out?

I've been a member since 2006 and I remember that there was a major change in 2008. Everybody cried (even me), wanted back the old layout which was more similar to the prev one than this actual layout change. My memories are fading but I think that 2008 was the year when we got the Library. First, I didn't understand it at all, looked meaningless back then, then it became one of the most useful features eventually. Then came 2011 (if I'm right) when we lost the free radio function outside of the USA/UK/Germany zone. People went crazy again and in this case, it was really unfair! So yes, it looked like that changes really surprised the users and the "Bring back the old last.fm" group was always fundamental to this site, haha. I started to like many functions after the major changes, but this one didn't add any good new functions and removed all the good ones. I barely use social media, so I don't get the modernisation and I don't even have a smartphone/tablet, so I haven't got any benefit at the moment. My only hope is that it's still a half-baked change and people can affect the dev team after a while... but I just simply gave a thumbs down to this new layout.

only time will tell if this is, somehow, a 2008 revisited. But I can tell you that much of the frenzy is happening today is extremely similar to that time. I remember well the layout differences were criticized and said as a distortion of the essence of which was the last.fm. Ironically it is this same layout that people today place as the ideal.

However it hurts in some people, much of this insurgency may end up dissipating in the air over time. What can actually be a differential in the future is an unfinished beta version causing the disorder we're seeing.

For me the difference between the old redesign and the new redesign is that the old redesign simply changed layouts and cosmetics while still maintaining the site's essential functionality. The most basic function of the web site for me is the generating of listening charts. After all, what is the point of scrobbling if that information can't be displayed in a meaningful way? The new design takes away the list of 50 top artists and replaces it with an image mosaic of only 5 top artists. The Top Tracks chart has been reduced from 50 to only 10. Granted, this information is still available in the Library, but it was so much more efficient to have it all displayed on one page. Browsing peoples' profile pages was the main way I discovered new music and my main reason for signing up and using Last.fm in the first place. Profile pages are almost useless now. I was perfectly happy with the previous redesigns because they left the charts intact. What we're seeing with the new design is not simply cosmetic changes, but a reduction in content and functionality. If you start taking away the charts, which is what makes Last.fm worth using, that's when I get upset.

@Tom Stephen. I joined Last.fm in July 2004. I have watched Last.fm as it grew and evolved: both in its user base, its features and the history of its impact on the commercial music industry.

Last.fm was one of the very first of its kind: a social networking website. It was the very first dedicated to music lovers.

Prior to May 2007 when Last.fm was bought out by CBS Interactive, the staff at Last.fm were far more responsive to user concerns than at present although they have done what they can ever since given the circumstances.

The changes in 2008 and 2010 improved existing features and added new ones which confused many users. The major uproar in 2008 as I recall (dimly and maybe mistakenly) had to do with charts layouts and in 2010 with alterations in the ability to use playlists (again dimly and maybe mistakenly). The last two major shifts did not affect me personally.

The changes is 2011 and 2014 removed one mainstay: streaming radio. In 2011 for non-subscribers outside of the UK, Germany and the USA. In 2014 it was totally discontinued.

Up until Aug 18, 2015 on the whole changes to the website format added new features and improvements to old ones which ultimately attracted many more new users than were lost at each turn.

But never before has so much been taken away in content and functionality with no notice of either the changes pending or the start date of when they would take effect.

A simple yes or no would suffice but they keep ignoring the questions about it. They didn't even save my old info which tells me they could care less about what people had there and they want to shove more ads in it's place. But again they refuse to say anything about it. They seem more talkative about certain things returning but if it's not anything they mentioned, they won't say a word about it.

In this case the silence of "About Me" is probably them saying screw you and your extra info. I've been on this site for 6 or 7 years and you get a better response from a regular user than you ever do with a mod or staff. I think these people lack in social skills or something, but in this case it's driving users away from the site by ignoring feedback. Well asking the part in 'about me' is definitely feedback but they keep ignoring it!

I'm a 10 year veteran... and some of my friends are leaving or have left.... others it pains me to see their page without the pictures they had of themselves, etc. I doubt this will ever return... and the collapse of society continues.....

The official response would sound something like that.

''Fuck You and fuck your stupid images and widgets. They're taking up too much space for our ads.

Ok, there has finally been a response for the 'about me' info  i found on a response from Last.fm facebook page, which they seem to be more talkative but should have been addressed in the first place.

"2. All data from user’s About Me has been saved and can be viewed in your Settings. The 200-character About Me is meant to provide users the ability to quickly introduce themselves to other music fans - we're working on ways to improve profile customisation for users in the future."

I think they shouldn't have put a limit on it or at the very least be able to use some 3rd party chart BBCode material which i'm still quite upset about. My data was deleted so there's no way i can get it back but it should have carried over to the new site unaffected or at the very least put it in a different area. I still want to be able to have my band logos and a collage of top albums and genres but all that is most likely gone now. The site thinks we shouldn't be using the 'about me' section for this and probably why they have been silent over this because we were not using it correctly but the fact remains we were able to do these things in that sidebar so it sorta conflicts with not using it right and being able to put stuff we want in the sidebar which is now restricted.

Again i liked having my top artists in a bandlogo photo and it was an easy way for others to look at to see what are my top artists without having to go through my library, it's all in one spot. If they wanted the about me to be a certain way they could have at the very least allow users to put their 3rd party library additions somewhere else on a sub menu on the main page so people can click on that to get the extra stats. And there would be no need for 3rd party stats if last.fm implemented the features themselves. They wouldn't exist if people didn't want them and there's a lot.

very good find indeed.  I just posted on the bottom of this page that I mention putting your charts and band labels in a journal. I have done this all along. If I needed to see maps and things like this I could just jump to the journal. Also if another  user wants to see what your into he can just look at one of your journals. At least i hope that this option will still be viable but will never know till they draw out the journals.

Thanks for re-posting that Spineshank. Seems like they are at least considering it or something similar which is a far better response than "no".

EDIT: I can't message you or leave a shout on your page so I'm posting this here: Just wanted to let you know that Internet Archive's wayback machine has some snapshots of your old profile. The way pages are archived seems kind of random and it's sometimes done with different localized versions of Last.fm, but at least you can go in and hopefully grab some of your sidebar stuff

Maybe they'll make another section specifically for widgets, etc. Doubt it, but who knows.

Has anyone thought that the "About Me" will be now a premium offer as well as customizations?

Did anyone think about this? If about me becomes only a place holder.. perhaps you can use your journals instead. Have one for charts and one for pictures ... If someone wants to see them they can go into the journals ..

If it's so, I'll get a subscription. I'm okay with paying a few euros per month.

Guys, nobody on staff has even hinted that future profile customization will be a subscriber-only feature. Let's not get riled up just yet.

They just can't find a way to say "Nope, we really, really need that space for the ads" without sounding like they're broke and after the money.
