This conversation is no longer open for comments or replies and is no longer visible to community members. The community moderator provided the following reason for archiving: necrobumped and we have another topic discussing this

I would like to strongly suggest a return of the (nearly) unlimited About Me right-sidebar section on our profile pages. I truly and sincerely believe that this feature is second only to scrobbling itself. Most of us customize this section with information about the music we like and ourselves, favorite song lyrics, concerts we've been to and images we like (after all a picture is worth a thousand words!) as well as various widgets and gadgets which use Last.fm's API to further express our listening tastes and habits.

This seems to be one of the things people complain about most and I feel it's reintroduction would make many people more accepting of the many changes that come with the new website. You could leave it at the old width limit of 300 or so, which is also in line with the right-sidebar on the new website. You can have it start below all the ads like you did on the old website. People really do peruse these sidebars of other users and as they do, they would see all the various ads interspersed throughout the rest of the profile.

I do sincerely hope you would take this suggestion into consideration and I think you will wind up with a number of more happy campers. Thank you

Please bring this back! This is completely my view! Other than scrobbling itself, the About Me section is 2nd most important to me. At least bring it back as an option!

I don't understand why Last.fm didn't already implement this essential feature. Come on now, it's not rocket science to make a proper About Me section. Just take and adapt the old code from the previous (and better) layout if you're unable to re-create it.

The only reason I can see them not adding it yet is because of how the site is formatted on the mobile site. They have the about me added above recently scrobbled tracks and well, everything else. If you had a long about me then it would be annoying to see all your stuff in terms of scrolling.

Even if that's the reason, more people use desktop than mobile anyways. All they could do is not show about me on mobile, and get rid of the pointless limit for desktop. I don't know what motivated them to focus so much on the mobile aspect on the site. Not that it isn't important, but why make it a top priority?

You're right, it isn't rocket science.

They could always have it show the first 100-150 characters or so on mobile and then have a button to "show more".

I had all gigs i'd ever been to in this section and now it is gone forever! Any way of getting this back even if as archived so that I can add it all to spreadsheet? I'll never remember all those gigs I went to otherwise.

If the data is not under your profile settings (and for some it's not) you can use Internet Archive's Wayback Machine.https://archive.org/web/

The format seems all screwed up at the moment (it used to produce flawless snapshot of your profile from the past), but you can enter your profile URL, scan the calendars for an archived page and you should find your About Me section near the bottom.

Hi,
try, first, to see your current Settings page (https://www.last.fm/settings ) at the Profile tab, where you have the "About Me" part of settings -->  you should see a scrolling field with your former code that was used to display your "About Me" section in the old site.
As Gary wrote above, it's not sure 100%, but it's very likely you'll see your old list of gigs over there.

Thanks guys. I had a look on my profile settings and there was a bunch of code with all my old "About me" information on there including the list of gigs I went to. It has now been transferred to a spreadsheet. Hurrah.

Being limited to 200 characters completely sucks, give us a few more at the very least! Iv'e returned to the site after a year to see if anything has changed and the overall aesthetic quality of profiles is still terrible, a shadow of its former self.

I just copied and pasted "200 character limit, plain text only." there 2 years ago and I still don't have an idea what else I can post in this section. Completely useless

Interesting, I've just had a quick zoom through this ideas section and note this one has 50+ votes and there's not even a glimmer of an acknowledgement. Yet there are some ideas with fewer votes that are already implemented or planned. Is it really that difficult to bring back this feature? Could it not be another tab at least? Fewer people are making much of this because they've deleted their accounts after waiting two years. I actually don't care about how much music I listen to or what or when or how I compare with others .......... so some of the new features are, in fact, useless to me! I accept that different people have different priorities on what is important to them. However I really do miss the "about me" section, I especially enjoyed collecting flags from around the world as people visited my page using the BB code and I loved looking at other people's pages giving me an idea of their personalities. Along with direct links and song sharing, I truly do miss the great social scene that LFM used to have - now I feel isolated.
Would someone also tell me the relevance of the "thumbs up" feature on our profile page? I note it turns green if I click it, but I don't have any notification if anyone else clicks a shout I make. In fact I was unaware that anyone had clicked on them until I saw my page before logging on and saw a number by it. Once logged on the numbers disappear.

On shouts? There is an option at the top of the shouts to change sorting between "Newest" and "Recently popular". I guess the thumbs up is used for that.

Thanks - I see what you mean, rather pointless though if when logged on you can't tell if anyone has clicked on the "thumbs up" or not! You wouldn't necessarily bother to check by sorting them using the drop down facility - very clumsy, clunky and irrelevant methinks. It would make more sense if we knew who clicked on them.

@ Suzy, The disappearance of 'friends' doesn't help either, now you've got to stalk somebody (sorry I mean "follow") in the hope that they'll stalk you back. The social media aspect  is damaged now, and like you say any hope that things will go back to how the site was before has been roundly ignored. I was one of those who deleted my account when I realised the site had been changed so drastically because like you say it had become isolating. I returned because I had hope that the Last Fm staff had listened to their users complaints and implemented some changes. Sadly that is not the case and I can see myself deleting my new account very soon. There is simply no appeal to the site for me anymore, profiles are bland, unappealing and completely lacking in personality and the community aspect of the site has been severely damaged. I'll give a while longer and few more scrobbles to see if things changes but frankly as so little has changed in past two years (has it really been that long? Wow) I'm not holding out much hope.

Agreed @Brimstone Argus Hah! Yes - because we no longer have to request friendship along come those darned stalkers from, ahem, "dating sites"! At least they can't add direct links....... Another great idea dumping friend requests .... *thumbs up* ;))

I think the people who used LFM for music and the social side have all but abandoned ship. There are a huge number of ghost and deleted accounts out there. The fact that not many have supported what is written here since it was resurrected a couple of days back demonstrates that point clearly. Whereas those who love statistics must be out of their minds with absolute joy.

Like you I'm not holding my breath on this one, none of the updates thus far improve social features.

It's a shame we've lost our profile customisation and a lot of social features like groups and forums have disappeared from the site. But you can still chat and make friends on Last.fm. Sure, it's not as easy as it once was and a lot of people aren't as active. But there's nothing stopping you. Notifications alert you of new messages and the reply system makes it easy to respond and keep track of conversations.

One of my best Last.fm friends and I met after the new site launch. We still talk pretty much every day through private messages and frequently share music with each other. We even have a collaborative playlist on Spotify. I'm always recommending music to friends and they share some with me.

There's no reason you can't still be social. Take the first step and send a message to someone and engage in conversation.

@ James Joul - the implication is I haven't tried sir, but I have! I have many unanswered shouts and messages. It would help if I knew if the people I write to even log on. This is another missing feature - the one that told us when someone last logged onto their page (provided their listening wasn't set to private). People may scrobble music on their page and never log on - they probably don't know if someone has tried to make contact because the notifications don't stretch to email any more.

Sharing songs through Spotify (where, yes, I have an account) can only be done with LFM buddies if you use URI and that, as far as I'm aware, requires copying and pasting rather than a simple click. It was so much simpler when you could go to a LFM song page, click the share button where as soon as you started typing a name it gave you a list of friends that you might want to share with. I note on song pages the decline of shouts since 2015, does that not indicate a change in the social side of LFM?

LFM just ain't what it was, the missing "about me" section is just the tip of the iceberg.  The powers that be have totally shifted the type of listeners they attract by concentrating on statistics. Go back two years and look at what was written here........... now move forward and you will see that apart from a few die-hards like me, mostly people are writing about data and scrobbles etc..

You can't please all the people all the time.
Suzy over and out.

I'd argue that Scrobbling and statistics should be the main focus on Last.fm. But I agree with everything you've said. Some of my messages also go unanswered, but many will receive a reply. It's just a matter of finding the right people. It's a bit like discovering new music. You often have to go through a lot of artists before you find one you really like.

There's no doubt that Last.fm lacks the social community atmosphere it once had. You visit users' pages and they haven't received a single shout in years. The main attraction now is Scrobbling and building a profile simply because that's all we have left as other features haven't been developed yet.

I just hope that if and when some of the great social features return, it won't be too late. That the community can wake up from their isolated state and start sharing, chatting and contributing again   :)

As somebody who deleted their account after the change and created a new one just recently I can say that the changes are stark and depressing, any new user signing up hoping for the social interaction the site once had are going to be sorely disappointed. I mean old users have their old friends as followers now but as Suzy pointed out attracting new followers/friends on the site is much harder than it used to be therefore new users are left extremely isolated. May I suggest for the sake of Last Fm keeping new users these social network aspects are brought back soon, I just can't see statistics  and data holding the same widespread appeal.

Right, I don't know why they've been so shady regarding this.
Either they have plans to reinstate it, or they don't. It's that simple.
And if they do plan to bring it back, why is it taking them so long?

Thanks again everyone for supporting this idea! Please continue to upvote.

As to why staff has not responded yet, that would seem to me to indicate that there is more to the issue than would appear. Not the least of which is the issue of sitewide BBCode still not being turned back on yet.

We'd like to expand the functionality at some point, but exactly how and when is still to be determined.  Certainly we have no plans to change how the About Me works this year.

A time ago Jon, you've explained, the number of votes is relevant to the ranking on your work schedule. That's the reason to told us, not to write endless comments with the same content and not to start own votes like Elliot.. Currently I count 91 votes for Gary's idea, he has posted 2 years ago. So what's happening to the promise, we user have influence to the development of the website with the voting button? True or fake?

I would suggest restoring the "about me" section and combining it with what used to be journals as a tab, it would be a kind of blog. Then no worrying about a sidebar interfering with ads. Nice if we could use BBcode, share direct links and allow other users to comment.

For now I've abandoned my account due to the missing features I enjoyed so much - primarily because most of the users who were on my friend list have done the same. The new users who are on LFM tend not to connect with others in the same way - shouts to songs are few and far between now in comparison to three years ago.

Look at the votes here for the return of this very essential part of LFM and it's not even given an "under consideration" - only vague maybes that it might be looked at next year! So SO disappointing.

What in the world.happened to last.fm anyways? I can't remember the why, but I remember thinking the site closed down, and I was shocked to find someone's website had a scrobble chart on it. Low and behold last.fm lives on, but quite a bit differently.

The About Me section was a huge social aspect, and I'm sad to see there are barely any shouts on profiles these days. I strongly support this feature making a return, or something to spur up social engagement again.

But that's why we got the opportunity to like someone's comment, a useless feature I never liked at the start. I had to lock the shoutbox on my profile because I couldn't stand anymore, watching how stupid comments on my profile are receiving lots of likes for what people wrote on my page. I would love if the Administration could give us the opportunity to exclude this function on our profile. Lately, I've started receiving plenty of trolls who began to like comments related to cheaters on LFM or why I use cartoon characters as personal avatars on my profile or Am I furry when I use them. It frustrates me.

Patrick, you can take the usernames of these people and add them to your ignore list and their shouts will disappear from your view. It's works globally as well, so if you're tired of seeing certain trolls' shouts in artist shout boxes you can make them disappear as well.

I blocked several of them, the problem is, I don't know who they are since LFM didn't give us the option to view those who liked comments that my friends left on my profile. I adjust the setting on my profile to receive messages only from neighbors and people that I follow. I will keep the shoutbox locked until things don't settle down for a while. Thanks for the suggestion.
