Many users have hoped for this feature to happen, including me. I am hoping the last.fm team would add it so there will be no more battle for the main picture. Of course, not remove the voting system completely but if a user wishes to do so they can.

While we're dreaming, let's wish for a way to separate artists with the same name.

For what it's worth, artist disambiguation is planned for the near future. The new catalogue was designed to take this problem into account, which was one of the primary blockers from solving this problem in the past (the old catalogue was inflexible and incredibly limited, and workarounds just weren't feasible).  I've been told that the development team plan to start with one artist, then a small sample, before rolling it out to all affected artists (approximately 11% of the catalogue, if I remember correctly).  However there are higher priority issues that need to be addressed first, namely addressing problems as they come up and restoring missing functionality from the old site,  so I'm not expecting this to happen for a matter of months, at least.

So, I think you'd be right to remain sceptical for now - the team have earnestly tried and subsequently failed disambiguation on several occasions over the years.  Until it actually happens and it actually works, "believe it when I see it" is a fair attitude to adopt.  I expect we'll post an update once this finally moves forward.

I'm curious as to how this will actually work. I mean, how will the site know which particular artist I'm scrobbling? Or will we be able to choose?

I don't really get why is it hard to separate artist ith same name, if you put  there code for separating by countries. So it would just separate artists by countries and keep the same name. O.o
also tracks differate mostly the artists, if you take care of their albums tracks will be already places on their profiles, so anyone scrobbling album and track of it already could go to the right artist.
my brother gave me this example since he had simmilar thing to do with his design but another features for exam.

Using countries is a very bad idea since there for instance is two Swedish bands called Mögel an at least two Australian bands named Rabies (plus a bunch from other countries).
The only realistic solution is to have a unique id for each artist. And there already is one available as the MBID.

Even though it is a 'very bad idea', isn't it definitely an improvement? Wouldn't it take away most ambiguity?

Why spending time to implement something that would be broken from the first day?
And from where would country data come from?

Wouldn't it be much better to use the MBIDs to identify the artists since Last.fm already uses MBIDs behind the scenes?

"And from where would country data come from?"

If I were in charge, I would've probably hired 300 people to do google searches and plot it in manually, as I have would've had no idea what I was doing. How did I even get this job?

"Why spending time to implement something that would be broken from the first day?"

We are talking degrees of brokenness here. It would've been an improvement. My thinking is: since a first-best solution has been eluding us for all these years, maybe it is time to consider second-bests.

"Wouldn't it be much better to use the MBIDs to identify the artists since Last.fm already uses MBIDs behind the scenes?"

Sure, sounds good. Let's do it!

Do you mean the option to select which artist picture you want to see as the main for an artist (and on your profile)?  It's been discussed a few times in the office, and I don't think it's under consideration at this point.  I'm not going to rule it out, as there are ways it could be done; but it's problematic (you would have to reserve space to save this setting for every artist in every user's library).  Artist disambiguation has been proposed as the main solution for addressing the problem with people fighting over which artist should be displayed as the main image on ambiguous pages (not that it doesn't happen on unambiguous artist pages as well).

Yes! Artists disambiguation and (!) more efficient spelling correction system please! Consider MusicBrainz' way of voting upon correction!

If you want to change the artist picture it would probably be easier solved on the user side using for instance a GreaseMonkey script.

Is there such a script out there already? For now I'm ok with the images in my top 8 artists, but I'm dreading that the ugly official picture that hasn't changed in 5 years will make a return for my #2 artist.
