Howdy,

Here's some of the interesting bits from Sprint 170's release notes:

Features
  • User event history
  • Delete private messages

Bugfixes
  • Fixed issue where unsuccessful password reset message was incorrectly shown
  • New password strength fixes
  • Fix unresponsive page due to misbehaving ad
  • Fix long pause between Spotify tracks
  • Fixed problem with invalid XML responses in the API

This sprint we're continuing work on event creation, playback provider settings, suggesting videos, 6 month chart ranges and some other stuff.

Cheers,
James

I'm ashamed of using this site, a broken site , it looks as if it's on purpose , I do not know if it would be possible to be so much incompetence that way .... everyone that " works " on this site I say... NOW Sashey away

I think one way or another you’ll never be right here, too many devils' advocates. This is not an update, Yes it is, etc., etc.

Events has me hopping on a ferry, going through a border crossing (2+ hrs) then driving over 300 km of which the last 80-100 will be stop and go, then bumper to bumper to see a show, can whoever is doing whatever they are doing allow us to plug in locations like old site, the one that worked, you are assuming we live next to main dish of our ISP[s].

tbf, I thought event history was one of the most requested judging by the amount of people I saw complaining about it. Second only to event creation/editing and that bloody about me sidebar :-P

Yeah, that's the problem, they should stop listening to people that don't understand 'core features'. Some more communication could also work.

+1 on communication. Though core features depend on how you use the site. The API is *the* #1 core feature for me. But considering I mostly use it for event data - anything relating to events comes a close second.

For me it goes: 1. events 2. data presentation 3. artist discovery (which is getting there with the similar artist fix, but heavily relies on our profiles ability to present our data) 4. not having to zoom out to 80%.

1 out of 4 so far.

I agree – I don't know how many people are working on site code at this point, but 2 very simple (if important) features in a 2-week sprint doesn't seem like anyone's full-time position. At least there's some activity at all again though. The priorities and direction seem to be right, so that's something.

If the fix for API XML was meant to include track.scrobble & track.updatenowplaying, then, no, it still isn't fixed (declared encoding doesn't match actual encoding).

still no possible to add events, correct? Also, the list of events in profile have such huge topics that If you go to many concerts the list will have lots of Pages and then difficult the correct look of all.

It's separated by year, so I think it's okay – at least they do pages, and not that unspeakable endless AJAX thing that is so en vogue elsewhere.

it looks like me giving up on scrobbling/using the API was a good idea. with one (questionable) fix every 2 weeks, it will take something like 32 years to clear the backlog of issues reported so far.

thanks for event history, people using lastfm as personal archive needed this.
BUT another big delusion our waiting two other weeks to have in fact JUST this thing (+ some bug fixes), and without Events Creation which is one of the key features to keep the site alive and crowded in the future (probably not a priority....). do we have to wait another month for the creation/editing?

the impression from the outside is that CBS keep one developer at work. part-time.

At this rate, it will probably take more than a year for this site to be where our last site was.  And our last site needed some improvement.  This site is no longer enjoyable.  It's such a shame.  We are now being fed very small upgrades and people get excited.  We had it so good before this mess.  The library views, main page views (artist/album) and the autocorrection process all suck.

Also, please get that stupid play-button off of the album art. I've been raging a lot because it started playing (and a completely different song than the one I was looking at) just because I wanted to see the album art a bit larger.

.. and regarding the Event History section now implemented: only TEN events for sub-pages, really? I need to scroll 8 different pages to see just the events jan>sept '15...
and plus, we're gonna need the return of the "events you added" and "events your friends/following attend" menu. the second one is particularly important since the LastFm Event recommendation system SUCKS and you know it... so at least you can find out some events by the friends' lists.

BUT these are not too urgent bugs: don't spend the next 2 seasons trying to fix them. *first* reintroduce EVENT CREATION please (and other more urgent website now absent sections)

Deleting messages only you can view doesn't sound like a top priority design feature to bring back. I would have much preferred well... Literally anything else. How about uploading and voting for images, email notifications, or any number of things the community is crying out for in these discussions. I understand that development takes time, but we've been in Beta for a very long time now - months before it officially went live. Surely this wasn't the most requested feature?

Oh well. I guess I'll have to wait another two weeks to see something that may or may not affect my use of Last.fm.

Thing is, without the possibility to add new events all you can see now are events that were added before the fiasco. "Events near you" is still borked and shows me events for a city 4 hours away. It's nice that there's now something in that sidebar besides ads and the one tweet we get, but it's just so heartbreakingly useless right now.

And deleting messages is such a basic, barebones thing that I'm really baffled that it's even mentioned as one of two (!) new features and didn't get lumped into "and some other stuff".

Still, this is probably the only official post from staff we're gonna get for the next two weeks, so... yay?

Is it ever going to be possible to see who else attended these events?  I liked to see who else attended the same shows.

The personal event list is nice, but these minuscule updates are starting ( or really have been) to be ridiculous.  Event creation and adding album art needs to be back asap.

Now that libre.fm has an open source version of audioscrobbler, why do we need last.fm?  Can't someone just take the scrobbling engine and build a new site that works, with neighbors, friend finder, and all the stats and charts that made last.fm worth using?  I would do it for free if I knew how and had the servers or web hosting.

There aren't many alternatives. Of course it all looks rudimentary right now, they've only just started. I think libre's been around for a while but before they didn't really have much of a reason to develop, the only stuff wrong with last.fm at that point was stuff that was always wrong with it.

I'm excited for listenbrainz the most though since it's linked to musicbrainz and will most likely be using it for metadata. Minimal awful tags. And those that are awful won't take a million years to get a change put through.

Happy to have my events back, but is this seriously all you managed to do in 2 weeks? James, if you are the only web developer working on this for 20hrs a week, why not be honest and just say so? That would explain a lot of the frustration people are having with last.fm at the moment. Just a simple 'Yes' would be sufficient.

If you are working with more people full time on this: shame on you! People get sacked for less.

I think they bought it but marketed it wrong or something. People on the outside just didn't see the value and because of that CBS doesn't either. They probably stopped caring when they started losing money on it. One day they decided they want to ditch it but for some reason need to make people leave instead of just dropping it (probably some legal reason). So they create this clusterfuck and throw in a bunch of ads to make the last little bit of cash they can from the 12% of people not using an adblocker.

Wondering off the subject of updates, actually was there one?

it is barely a mention now - http://www.cbsinteractive.com/

I loathe American capitalism, but Last FM killed itself. CBS has made some bad investments over the last decade, it does not want to take the loss. You can simply go to Wall street Journal and look up this 'dirt.'

The internet tends to sway people to what is popular not important.

http://www.theguardian.com/media/last-fm

That is a bad investment, those founders walked away with millions, I think four over 20 million euros each.

that link is so depressing. the only news last.fm makes is gradually reduced functionality and lost money. The guardian missed the last big loss in functionality with the beta release.

The lost functionality is a last FM issue and all across the web, then there is a cheering side as well "love the new site." Watch the video for 5 minutes, it is boring, but detailed in all that is wrong 20+ minutes worth.

But CBS could care less about anything beyond profits, if you are not making them you go to the people you employee for answer.

That why I said to go to Wallstreet J, or Forbes if you trust that publication, the local Economists, all years and numbers are the same, but in WSJ a corporate spokes-person will say "we have addressed so and so with managers "there."

M=C=M that is what CBS knows & wants.

This isn't about "us" it about losing money; all you will hear from a CEO is Fix it!

Upgrade? Meh. Upgrade for whom? Tweens? I personally have been here since 2004. And even though you keep telling us - "things are still be worked on". the number one thing that has me peeved is - well there are two - "Tags" for playlists and songs, and "Recommendations" for songs. I found many a gem listening to "recommendations". Now you have four lonely album covers with songs listed. Pathetic. I am underwhelmed. VERY much underwhelmed. There are MANY streaming services out there with much more to offer than you do. Should have left it as it was - it wasn't broke.

It's a short way of saying someone is testing, bug fixing, creating software applications and other frameworks in the process of a new software release.

Beta is simply a test (mode), so when it is close to being finished or in a working stage for those who are “build” friendly, you allow people to test new software, give advice, feedback before you release the new software as finalized (with minor bugs expected) after the "sprints."

Feedback, tweaks, bug fixes - a "Sprint"

Retest until working, etc.

Afterword, the process of maintaining source codes - 9 to 5 work.

**I learned this in college; so it Must be Correct :/

It strongly appears the test was dumped on “us” and the test "timings" seem to mean nothing at this point; that is, unless widespread frustration was factored in (timed) every cycle of two weeks?

Nothing's changed really

Happy Halloween

this is all an elaborate marketing campaign to make last.fm look like heroes when they restore the old site. James Scott's updates are clearly what he did in an afternoon once every two weeks, just building the anticipation.
