Website design update rolling out today

Hello!

From today, a small number of you will begin to see some exciting updates to the website. Here’s what you can expect:

Fully redesigned artist, album and track pages

We’ve updated these pages, giving them a fresh new look and a better layout. We’ve also added some more data and improved the functionality of these pages. Here’s what you can expect:

  • A new header that better shows off the artist image and gives every artist page a unique look and feel
  • More metadata on artist pages (e.g. when an artist was born, when a band was formed, etc.) and similar artists shown at the top of the page for easier exploration
  • Events are back! We’re now showing some upcoming events on the artist overview page.
  • A new scrobble stats graph on all pages, which shows the last 6 month listening trend (look out for those Christmas spikes)

  • Bigger album artwork on the album page. No need to expand any more!
  • Album tracklists can now be sorted by popularity, allowing you to easily see which tracks are the most popular on an album
  • We’re now showing similar albums on album pages, and more similar tracks on track pages
  • We’re also now showing some artist info and similar artists on album and track pages, so it’s easier for you to learn more about any new music you discover
  • For those of you browsing the website on your phone, the mobile experience on these pages has been vastly improved with a better mobile layout and finger-friendly tap targets

Updated tracklist and chart design across the whole website

In tandem with the artist, album and track page redesigns, we’re rolling out a new tracklist and chart design to the whole website. This update brings some usability improvements and provides additional functionality:

  • Tracklists now lead with the track title (or album title if it’s a list of albums), for better information hierarchy and for consistency with most other music players
  • Tracklists without chart bars now use a 2 column layout, which makes it easier to scan through a list and distinguish track titles from artist names
  • We’re now showing album artwork in tracklists whenever we can. Click the album art to go straight to the album page!
  • Chart bars can now be scaled to any size, allowing them to more accurately represent trends
  • We’ve added some useful options to the more menu (accessible by hovering on a row and clicking the the 3 dots icon, or by tapping the 3 dots icon on mobile). For example, you can go straight to your library from your recent tracks.
  • On mobile, you can now see which tracks you have loved in a tracklist, and also love or unlove a track directly from the more menu!
  • We’ve also made tap targets bigger on mobile, so it’s much easier to tap on the correct link or icon when browsing.

Other small design changes

You’ll also notice some other small design changes across the whole website, for example:

  • New button styles
  • Some new icons
  • A fun new love button animation! <3

Please note...

Not everyone will be able to see these design changes right away. We will be rolling them out to a small percentage of users first, while we monitor performance and fix any bugs. Eventually, all users will see the design changes. Additionally, some artist, album and track sub-pages will have the new design, but there are some that we’re still working on. These will be updated soon.

We’ll be continuing to roll out these new styles to more pages in the future, but for now we hope you enjoy the new designs. Please let us know your thoughts and if you spot any problems.

Thanks as always for your support.

Love,
Team Last.fm x

"Tracklists now lead with the track title (or album title if it’s a list of albums), for better information hierarchy and for consistency with most other music players"

Can I revert this crap?  That's a TERRIBLE way to do things. "Better hierarchy" is blatantly false in the opinion of most people I know. "Consistency with most music players" may be true if people use terrible default layouts. At LEAST give us a choice! It looks terrible now

I didn't know the website was even getting a redesign, came on looked at my profile page and got a major shock LOL. I'm assuming I was one of the first to get the redesign cos I'm a subscriber.

I am not a fan of having it as song title then the artist on the recently played tracks, I think it looks ugly :/ Especially when playing multiple songs by an artist, the pleasing look of the artist name matching up was so nice. Wish we could switch it back...

Also not a fan of the big play button next to the tracks either, cos half of my tracks don't have them and it looks silly.

Oh, and the header image for our obsession/top track STILL cuts people's heads off and doesn't show the whole photo? That's been annoying me for months, will it ever be fixed?

I have no problem with "Track - Artist" as it stands now. The reason I hated the change before (and the reason I thought others did) was that it made it impossible to glean at a glance whether a cluster of songs was by the same artist or not. With the multiple-column setup you guys put in this time, that's exactly as easy and natural to see as it ever was. I think it looks nice and have no problem with it.

My only problems with this layout would be:

1) One slight bug: By default, my page is set to list my top artists of all time. As of now, it still does so! However, in the tiny little dropdown menu above the chart, by default it says "Last 7 Days" -- so if you go to my page, the first thing you see is the all-time artists and numbers (which is correct!), but it SAYS it's the last 7 days. If I change it to a different time interval (ex. last 30 days, etc) and then change it back to All Time, it displays properly. This is a very tiny bug but still worth noting.

2) Tracks could and ideally should be a bit more compact: the "modified" screenshot example posted on the first page of this thread that a user came up with looks very good. This is my biggest issue.

3) Slight recommendation: Maybe try bolding the play counts on the "top artists", etc., pages? I believe the text is thinner than it used to be and to me it's a noticeable difference; it's harder to see the numbers at a quick passing glance than it was, if only slightly. Making the font just a tiny bit thicker would enhance readability a bit and make it feel cleaner. It looks a little rough with the thin numbers.

4) Because the colors of the bars (the ones representing play counts) are lighter than they used to be on the same white background, it's a little harder to see them. I would prefer to see them darkened slightly, or possibly add a Night Mode/Dark Mode to the website.

These are all fairly slight issues, though; I can be tough to please with new layouts, but I have few issues with this one. When the Beta one was first launched, I thought it was ATROCIOUS (the large album art forcing a much, much smaller amount of tracks to be visible on a most-played user page at once, the original debut of Track - Artist); fortunately you guys listened to the users and reverted those aspects quickly!, and haven't repeated those mistakes here, so thank you for being in touch with the userbase on that front. I do believe that this one could be more compact (someone's "Modified" screenshot posted near the start of the thread would be perfect!), but it's certainly better than the last attempt at an overhaul initially was and I have no *serious* problems with it. A couple little tweaks in terms of compactness and play-count-readability would make it perfect, though!

I just found a change for the better: on the phone you can actually see which tracks have the "heart" (loved) !
Directly in the recent tracks list, no need to go to ttack's page to see if it is or not loved.

Just got the new site design. I'm fine with it for the most part. But the one thing I absolutely hate is the way the songs are displayed song title - artist. That's awful looking. The artist should be displayed first like it's always been, and judging by most of the comments in this thread and elsewhere, that seems to be something the vast majority of users agree with. That would be the one thing I'd ask you to please listen to the feedback, and change it back to the old way.

There are tracks from one album I cannot access anymore which I could with the old design, the track and artist links simply don't work, so I neither can upload album covers nor add videos. Check my Recent Tracks list or library for String Quartet No.8 in C minor, op. 110 by the Fitzwilliam String Quartet:

https://www.last.fm/user/hjbardenhagen/library

These scrobbles come from Deezer's beta desktop app, by the way, but that is probably not the reason why the links are dead.

OK, this seems to be another hint that I don't have the new scrobbles database anymore now.

I just noticed that there is no sharing option with Twitter and Facebook on any page anymore, will this come back and/or be enhanced somehow?

And what is the "Play artist" button supposed to do, play only tracks by the artist, e.g. his top tracks? Similar artists radio is hidden in the 3-dot-menu now.

As a subscriber, I'd like to be able to upload my own header. I'm not picky about anything else, the site looks fine and I haven't run into functional issues with the design. It's just that headers are often blurry, have weird angles and are, generally, unattractive.

Also, I especially like "Track Title - Artist Name"; that will always be my preferred view.

Thank you, Last.fm staff, for all that you do.

It should be not that difficult to add an option for an own header, a good idea.

"Track Title - Artist" order for recent tracks is as terrible as it was last time.
Hope to see that optional at least.

Artist page structure is a bit strange. We got similar artists block duplicated - at the top of right sidebar and also below the shouts. I believe that sidebar one could be replaced with listeners block as it better suits sidebar column and gets out of main column's context. Photos can now be accessed from both main picture link and sidebar, but it's reasonable at least, I just believe that it could be managed in better way.

I liked it when block headers like Top Tracks or Albums were links for full catalog - now they are not and we have separate links in the bottom right corner instead.

Due to appearance of sidebar column shoutbox looks a bit narrow for all artist, album and track pages, would be better if its width will be the same as similar artists block right below. Also would like to see at least 7 latest shouts there instead of 5.

All photos are now in webp - well, it was done with purpose I guess so it's OK, but it also means that users won't be able to download photos and albums art from the site in common image formats anymore I guess.

In general - adding new features is always great, but new design decisions seems to be questionable at their best.

Good point! I hadn't noticed this.

I actually think it looks more appropriately placed at the top-right, rather than way down at the bottom, even below the Shouts. Having said that, I think I agree that Listeners could be moved back to the sidebar, in a similar location to where it was on the previous layout, rather than in the main block.

I don't understand what you mean here - as far as I can tell, I can right-click and save images just like before, both from the main images gallery and album artwork...

Yes, I agree that it would be better to leave one in the top-right.

I can save them too, but only as .webp file. However, it can be saved in common formats after changing image URL a bit (by replacing .webp and everything after that with format extension like png or jpg) so it's not a problem though.

Chrome. As I can see Firefox doesn't support webp at the moment, so images can be saved as before.

So how can I access recent events from an artist when they're currently not on tour? What a slack job.

Why so much space between lines?
Why the artist charts on the profile page have so much space between the artist name and the number of plays?
Why not keep information more compact and closer?

This is not Spotify. Don't break the lines for track and artist.

The new design... ehem, no. Right now, it is all one intertwined mess. With its all-white background with no boundaries, everything looks like it is attached to each other (like this ugly getsatisfaction page). Some things like "Similar Tracks" have way too much space.
And the track-artist thing? Seriously, make this optional.  It is just wrong, the artist always comes first...

Hmm, something tells me that all people's feedback here regarding new website design as usual will be useless and no one from staff will take users wishes and reasonable suggestions for consideration :/ We had it all before with previous unsuccessful redesign that we have right now.
SAD.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Totally a disaster with this new web page design.

Not only did you remove vital items like approving track names, and tweet but also on the band (SAINT) The christian metal band from salem , oregon that had a few albums in the 80's then again here lately about every external link is  incorrect. 7thsaint is not the same band as SAINT.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Recent tracks looks (for subscribers?).

Hi,

I recently noticed that the looks of the "recent tracks" and "top tracks" sections have changed. I don't really like it - the title and the artists are now switched... Is this only for subscribers? How can I have the old page appearance back if I'm a subscriber?

Various Artists compilations are not working again. Thanks to this new "design," my charts are messed up again. There are VA albums I cannot access anymore, which I could with the old design, the album and artist links don't work anymore, so I neither can upload album covers nor add videos. Thanks a lot. As Elwood Blues mentioned, the new design is all one intertwined mess. With its all-white background with no boundaries, everything looks like it is attached to each other (like this ugly get satisfaction page). Some things like "Similar Tracks" have excessively much space.

While adding videos to very long album tracklists, I noticed that there is a limit of max. 200 tracks showing for an album, even if the release has more tracks than that, e.g. because it is a multiple CD box like The Decca Sound boxes. Here are three examples with tracklists of 655, 310 and 314 tracks as mentioned in the header, but they all end at track #200:

https://www.last.fm/music/Various+Artists/The+Decca+Sound
https://www.last.fm/music/Various+Artists/Decca+Sound:+The+Analogue+Years+1954+–+1968
https://www.last.fm/music/Various+Artists/Decca+Sound:+The+Analogue+Years+1969+–+1980

I don't know if this limit is new, or if the old website design and/or database already had it as well, maybe even before 2015. It means that tracks above #200 are not accessible on an album page which is problematic in my opinion. Other examples probably can be found with long opera releases like the complete Ring cycle by Richard Wagner.

It is a problem but I would imagine a very minimal one, as I can't imagine in the greater scheme of things there are that many albums/compilations that amount to 200+ tracks, as such I doubt this will be a high priority issue.

That said, it would be really neat if Last FM supported multi-disc compilations by splitting them visually on the page to show each disc rather than giving the impression the album is one mega long disc.

A perfect example of that is Various Artists - 100 movie hits. Two tracks are missing despise the compilation that has 100 movie hits, but Last.FM listed only 98, not 100.

I visited the Artist page, and I'm not happy with the way how you designed.

  1. Similar Artists should be on the top of the page on the right side.
  2. Recent listeners should be on the right side at the bottom of statistics not between an artist biography and shouts.
  3. Top listeners and listeners you know should stay where they were when the old design existed not at the bottom.
  4. Your listening habits should also be on the right side of the screen.
  5. The current layout for someone's listening habits is a mess, and it's too small to see your listening count and your avatar when you see yourself on the Artist page.
  6. Trending tracks should be somewhere so everybody could see them not at the bottom.
  7. The tab "all tracks" is missing. I cannot find it unless I didn't visit the Artist page and clicked view all tracks.
  8. The tab "albums" is also missing. I cannot see it unless I didn't visit the Artist page and clicked view all albums.

I'm sorry, but I don't like the way you made the current schedule. Everything is messy, huge, polluted, and chaotic.

Album and song designs are okay and I don't have anything against them, but artist's site design.. maan, this is terribly mobile-aimed idea, and looks messy as hell with all its scrolling needed to get most of the important informations.
But I guess my thought on this doesn't change anything, so nevermind.

I get a server error 505 ("Oops, this page doesn't seem to be working right now. We're aware of the problem, please try again soon.") whenever I try to display my events page for 2019 (https://www.last.fm/fr/user/DragonOfWisdom/events/2019), as well as the 2019 events page of any other user that already went to an event this year.
I'm not 100% sure it's related to the new UI rather than just my account, but I have found that I can display those pages normally when I am not logged in, or I am using my old account without a subscription (and thus without the new UI).

PLEASE TRY TO FIX THESE THREE THINGS

1) The space for the track should be bigger so that you can see the track...
For example lets say the song "Like This Like That (Megavoices Claxixx Mix)" should be visible and not just see something like "Like This Like...".

2) The spellling in Spotify mostly uses "-" and not "( )" so many songs are the same but last.fm displays them as different. For example in Spotify a song might be a "- Radio edit" and in last.fm and normally it is "(Radio edit)".

3) There should be a voting system that changes, redirects and corrects automatically scrobbles (artist-song-album name) to the correct spelling. So that there are not many fake names here and there ruining the otherwise beautiful experience...

Finally there are also many artists with the "feat.", "featuring", "ft." etc. that are not different artists than the original that features a singer...
So it counts them as different artists and it feels like you listen to 10.000 artists when you listen to lets say 5.000 original different artists...
Another point to watch out that ruins the experience.

Hope you take my opinion in account, see ya!

Honestly, they should just be removed/hidden by default. What is the point in saying "This shout is unavailable"??
