Website design update rolling out today

 • Updated 3 weeks ago
Hello!

From today, a small number of you will begin to see some exciting updates to the website. Here’s what you can expect:

Fully redesigned artist, album and track pages

We’ve updated these pages, giving them a fresh new look and a better layout. We’ve also added some more data and improved the functionality of these pages. Here’s what you can expect:

 • A new header that better shows off the artist image and gives every artist page a unique look and feel
 • More metadata on artist pages (e.g. when an artist was born, when a band was formed, etc.) and similar artists shown at the top of the page for easier exploration
 • Events are back! We’re now showing some upcoming events on the artist overview page.
 • A new scrobble stats graph on all pages, which shows the last 6 month listening trend (look out for those Christmas spikes)

 • Bigger album artwork on the album page. No need to expand any more!
 • Album tracklists can now be sorted by popularity, allowing you to easily see which tracks are the most popular on an album
 • We’re now showing similar albums on album pages, and more similar tracks on track pages
 • We’re also now showing some artist info and similar artists on album and track pages, so it’s easier for you to learn more about any new music you discover
 • For those of you browsing the website on your phone, the mobile experience on these pages has been vastly improved with a better mobile layout and finger-friendly tap targets

Updated tracklist and chart design across the whole website

In tandem with the artist, album and track page redesigns, we’re rolling out a new tracklist and chart design to the whole website. This update brings some usability improvements and provides additional functionality:

 • Tracklists now lead with the track title (or album title if it’s a list of albums), for better information hierarchy and for consistency with most other music players
 • Tracklists without chart bars now use a 2 column layout, which makes it easier to scan through a list and distinguish track titles from artist names
 • We’re now showing album artwork in tracklists whenever we can. Click the album art to go straight to the album page!
 • Chart bars can now be scaled to any size, allowing them to more accurately represent trends
 • We’ve added some useful options to the more menu (accessible by hovering on a row and clicking the the 3 dots icon, or by tapping the 3 dots icon on mobile). For example, you can go straight to your library from your recent tracks.
 • On mobile, you can now see which tracks you have loved in a tracklist, and also love or unlove a track directly from the more menu!
 • We’ve also made tap targets bigger on mobile, so it’s much easier to tap on the correct link or icon when browsing.

Other small design changes

You’ll also notice some other small design changes across the whole website, for example:

 • New button styles
 • Some new icons
 • A fun new love button animation! <3

Please note...

Not everyone will be able to see these design changes right away. We will be rolling them out to a small percentage of users first, while we monitor performance and fix any bugs. Eventually, all users will see the design changes. Additionally, some artist, album and track sub-pages will have the new design, but there are some that we’re still working on. These will be updated soon.

We’ll be continuing to roll out these new styles to more pages in the future, but for now we hope you enjoy the new designs. Please let us know your thoughts and if you spot any problems.

Thanks as always for your support.

Love,
Team Last.fm x

Hi taebaby, can you be more specific please?

If you're referring to the new database, could you please post your username and specific examples in this thread?  Thanks!

Ive been having the same mess also.  here's an example- notice how the same song is now linked to two seperate albums, the albums post 2015 are listed lower case under a seperate album by a seperate artist.  it was not this way before 11-22-18

Can you just bring the 2006 design back? With groups? And blogs? And forums?
I'm joking, I know you can't and you wouldn't even if you could.
Please, at least leave "Artist - Title" as it is.

I've never seen "Title - Artist" used, except maybe does YouTube use it? But none of the many audio players I use use such a messed up arrangement, so not sure where last.fm is getting this idea that it will be more uniform.

Nice. Some great improvements.

 • We’re now showing album artwork in tracklists whenever we can. Click the album art to go straight to the album page!
Makes tagging and uploading missing covers much more streamlined. But there's still the issue of missing artwork icons even when artwork already exists on the album page.

 • We’ve added some useful options to the more menu (accessible by hovering on a row and clicking the the 3 dots icon, or by tapping the 3 dots icon on mobile). For example, you can go straight to your library from your recent tracks.
I suggested this over a year ago. Nice to see it's on the site as it improves navigation a lot. You can quickly check how many Scrobbles people have for a certain track/ artist right from their profile page.

 • A new header that better shows off the artist image and gives every artist page a unique look and feel
Finally! No new header for profiles though?

 • A new scrobble stats graph on all pages, which shows the last 6-month listening trend
More stats are always good.

A few other thoughts...

- I've noticed that important information on artist pages (total listeners, total scrobbles, my scrobbles etc) is very small and blends in with everything else.
- A different colour to separate global tags from personal ones would be nice.
- I like how the new "Recent Tracks" layout on profiles is arranged into track title and artist columns. However, the whole thing takes up considerably more space while also reducing space for track names (desktop).

To be accurate, 20% more vertical space. They call it mobile friendly, LOL

Even though as a paid subscriber and heavy user and frequent maintainer of Last FM, it would have been nice to have been considered for this rollout (guessing it was random...), from what I have seen of these changes, I approve of it. Always good to have more information visible rather than it be buried away somewhere.

This is a good point, and I'm sorry if you feel overlooked.  However, at the moment we're only running a limited test with a tiny fraction of users (1%), to test performance and catch any bugs / oversights we've missed early. I'm sure we'll make it available to subscribers in advance when we're happy with performance, etc, and we're closer to the official release.

Subscribers should be your first test market for all roll-outs like this, maybe give them an option in settings so that they can opt-out of being first if they want to too.  Just a suggestion, I'm not a subscriber but considering this comment, if I pay for a service I should be able to give the earliest feedback on anything new if only a small portion will be able to see it first.

I second this suggestion. It may be cleaner to have the single image, but I like that you could see a few images, especially if the main image is a bugger to shift.

Furthermore, that old layout Patrick links to actually mirrors the default layout of the current top artist and album image grids on our profile pages...

In no way or sense was that "cleaner" or "minimal" at all. Crowded and condensed and outdated design style would be a better description.

The relaunched design (not this latest update, as I haven't seen that for myself yet) is cleaner and more minimalist, but I was merely saying that I liked seeing a trio of images on the main artist  pages.

I also wouldn't say the old version Patrick linked to is crowded and condensed, particularly, just different. I still like how it looks. *shrug*

This is all great, and I'm happy for the progress being made!
However, I do wish that paid subscribers were included in the first stage of update releases.
I don't think that's an inappropriate suggestion.

Still, I'm happy with the developments being made and I look forward to seeing what else will be
done in the near future. Perhaps, a fully functioning "About Me" section. Sorry, but I just had to do it.

If it's any consolation, note that it's so entirely random that moderators haven't been given early access either. I believe 1% of users had initial access. The slow roll-out is to test load and look for bugs rather than to give people a perk.

As far as I have understood jon's postings in the other announcement thread this week about the new scrobbles database, they are considering allowing subscribers to edit older scrobbles in their libraries which would be a very important feature for a lot of users.

I guess that they are very careful at the moment with introducing these two recent major site updates, as the first one already caused a performance issue right away. So maybe enabling the website design update for all subscribers would have been too many users to properly watch over its rollout. I do not see the design update either, by the way.

If I'm able to fix capitalization errors on my own profile, I'd gladly remain a paid subscriber. And, honestly, that would take the load off of whoever is in charge of doing it.

I can understand why they'd want to be careful with such a rollout. It makes sense.

Hi Nightwing thanks for subscribing, I'm sorry you weren't included in the initial rollout.  As I said to Elliot,  at the moment we're only running a limited test with a tiny fraction of users (~1%), to test performance and catch any bugs / oversights we've missed early. We often run a-b tests of this nature without any kind of announcement, but as the changes are significant, we figured it was best to let everyone know what to expect and the rationale behind some of the design changes.

I believe our intention is to make the new design available early to all subscribers when we're satisfied with performance, and we're closer to the official release.  However, I think your point is valid, and will discuss it with the team for the future developments (e.g. maybe subscribers should get an 'always opt me in to beta tests early' setting).

I have the new design now, and I prefer to have the track listed first in the Recent Tracks, because sometimes the artist names are so long that I could not access the track page anymore, especially in classical music with several artists mentioned in the name, and now this problem is gone.

But I wonder why the Recent Tracks do not use two lines for one track like the Top Tracks now which I like even better than squeezing everything into one line. The Recent Tracks section would become longer then, but that doesn't matter much, I think. Furthermore you can change the setting for how many recent tracks should be shown on your profile.

I like the larger header on artist/album/track pages, please also add this to our profile pages to finally overcome the dreaded Last.fm forehead syndrome.

I would prefer a section with similar tracks on the track pages, e.g. instead of the Trending Tracks everywhere which I wouldn't miss at all. And the section could lead to a full page of similar tracks, too, with a play button for a related radio station for example.

I also can add tags to albums again, by the way, so this issue might have been related to having only the new scrobbles database, but not the new website design yet.

I agree that I'd prefer having the track and artist on two lines. Seems a better compromise than things cutting off, like they do now. Clearly, very few people actually like this current solution.

I hope that the "track title - artist name" configuration is optional. You tried implementing that once before and it instigated a pretty big backlash. Even though the new design looks much, much, much better than that initial attempt did, I'd still prefer having the "artist name - track title" configuration.

Also, even tough the new design looks cleaner and more superficially appealing than what we've had so far, it seems to me that you've increased the likelihood of both track title truncation and artist name truncation. Information density has gone down once again, and that's one of the biggest reasons I (and I suspect others) still resent the site re-haul to this day.

That being said, I don't have the update yet, so I might change my mind once when I start using it, and everything else sounds promising!

From what I've seen on various screenshots so far:
Switch back to "artist - track"!! Why are you making the same mistakes over and over?
Too much bold text on the user page, bolded track names are completely unnecessary and look bad, and there's even more wasted space in the recent tracks/top tracks sections, which got bigger without any additional information or new functionality behind it.
It's not all that bad though, artist/album/track pages are definitely going in the right direction, seem to look nicer now with the new header and larger album art...

When will everybody be able to see this? I agree with what other people said. Track title - Artist name is stupid. I more prefer an old way of viewing them on our profile. Perhaps you could expand the tracklist and add album title? It should be Artist name - track title - album title. People in this way will be able to see from which, album we are listening to these tracks. It would make a lot of sense. Album title should have a clickable URL so they can easily access them. Looking at the various screenshots, I don't like that big blank space that you added between the recent tracks and top tracks sessions. Please, fix that if you can. Thanks.

The "Track Title - Artist Name" format wasn't well received last time, but I think that's because it was just reversed for... reasons(?)

Now it's properly separated into two columns. It's certainly quite different, and strange to look at when you've been used to one format for many years. But I feel it's a step forward. It's much cleaner and easier to read and understand at a glance.

But, again, I would like to see it tweaked so that it takes up less space.
Something like this (click to expand).

Yep. I definitely prefer your new modified suggestion. Not everyone has large high-resolution screens like I suspect the designers do.

The more sparsely that the data is presented, the more I have to zoom out the entire page to have a workable and decent overview. I already use the site zoomed out to 75-60% on a daily basis, and I'm scared that this will make me want to zoom out even further, and at that point - lower than 60% - the font becomes too tiny to read without squinting and eye-strain (for me at least).

Yes, I agree with this completely! I'm fine with Title - Artist as long as it's separated into columns like this, so much so that I didn't even notice it as it looks natural. But I definitely agree that the more compact it is, the better, and this could be a bit more compact. Now, it's still much better than the initial Beta launch where things took up an absurdly absurd amount of space (which I was happy they reversed!) - but I agree that your Modified would be an improvement!

I've raised the cut-off issue (which I agree is a problem), but by my calculations it's 30 characters on a normal desktop window, whereas here the titles are cutting off much sooner. I'm told you took the screenshot on the minimum width desktop layout (the smallest size before it changes to the mobile design).

spotify does this so they thought they'd do it too. it's not going to work of course because spotify is a streaming service so nobody cares how this info is displayed not to mention that's the way they've always done it since day one. they didn't just decide to copy others one day. anyway, it doesn't work for me, (I still haven't got the new design but judging from the screenshots I have seen), but if it works for the majority then I guess I'll just have to endure.

Never a truer word spoken - more so because the majority of their users won't be using Last FM, so their garbage tags persist.

I can personally see myself warming to the track and artist column layout. I don't think this is the same as Title - Artist, though, which was confusing and backwards. This at least has some form and logic to it.

One of the designers explained some of the rationale behind the change to me, and I do see the sense in it. The feedback here is reaching the relevant people, though, which is why the character cut-off is being looked into.

I've expressed myself how the layout is an emotive thing, that it isn't just used as a reference point by users to find out what they listened to, but that the aesthetics really matter to people. People might know what the song title (or artist - right now something like Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds wouldn't display) being cut-off is, but it isn't pretty to look at when it's turning into ellipsis.

I guess I'm the only one who loves the new recent tracks layout. I like the bold and I love that the position is fixed because it looks tidier. I guess it's a little irritating that some titles won't be shown in full but the majority of song titles would fit into the space, I imagine. I also love that song titles come first. It all just looks so much more pleasant to my eyes.

I wish you'd let us upload custom headers though. And I also wish you'd change the artist and album pages in our libraries because the images are so small they may as well not be there. I'd love it if they looked more like the old last.fm or like artist album pages where the images are big.
