Website design update rolling out today

Hello!

From today, a small number of you will begin to see some exciting updates to the website. Here’s what you can expect:

Fully redesigned artist, album and track pages

We’ve updated these pages, giving them a fresh new look and a better layout. We’ve also added some more data and improved the functionality of these pages. Here’s what you can expect:

  • A new header that better shows off the artist image and gives every artist page a unique look and feel
  • More metadata on artist pages (e.g. when an artist was born, when a band was formed, etc.) and similar artists shown at the top of the page for easier exploration
  • Events are back! We’re now showing some upcoming events on the artist overview page.
  • A new scrobble stats graph on all pages, which shows the last 6 month listening trend (look out for those Christmas spikes)

  • Bigger album artwork on the album page. No need to expand any more!
  • Album tracklists can now be sorted by popularity, allowing you to easily see which tracks are the most popular on an album
  • We’re now showing similar albums on album pages, and more similar tracks on track pages
  • We’re also now showing some artist info and similar artists on album and track pages, so it’s easier for you to learn more about any new music you discover
  • For those of you browsing the website on your phone, the mobile experience on these pages has been vastly improved with a better mobile layout and finger-friendly tap targets

Updated tracklist and chart design across the whole website

In tandem with the artist, album and track page redesigns, we’re rolling out a new tracklist and chart design to the whole website. This update brings some usability improvements and provides additional functionality:

  • Tracklists now lead with the track title (or album title if it’s a list of albums), for better information hierarchy and for consistency with most other music players
  • Tracklists without chart bars now use a 2 column layout, which makes it easier to scan through a list and distinguish track titles from artist names
  • We’re now showing album artwork in tracklists whenever we can. Click the album art to go straight to the album page!
  • Chart bars can now be scaled to any size, allowing them to more accurately represent trends
  • We’ve added some useful options to the more menu (accessible by hovering on a row and clicking the the 3 dots icon, or by tapping the 3 dots icon on mobile). For example, you can go straight to your library from your recent tracks.
  • On mobile, you can now see which tracks you have loved in a tracklist, and also love or unlove a track directly from the more menu!
  • We’ve also made tap targets bigger on mobile, so it’s much easier to tap on the correct link or icon when browsing.

Other small design changes

You’ll also notice some other small design changes across the whole website, for example:

  • New button styles
  • Some new icons
  • A fun new love button animation! <3

Please note...

Not everyone will be able to see these design changes right away. We will be rolling them out to a small percentage of users first, while we monitor performance and fix any bugs. Eventually, all users will see the design changes. Additionally, some artist, album and track sub-pages will have the new design, but there are some that we’re still working on. These will be updated soon.

We’ll be continuing to roll out these new styles to more pages in the future, but for now we hope you enjoy the new designs. Please let us know your thoughts and if you spot any problems.

Thanks as always for your support.

Love,
Team Last.fm x

I'm still waiting for my page to update. I had it for about 2 minutes, but it wouldn't let me sign back into Last.fm so I cleared my history and then I didn't have it anymore.

I've been reverted back to the old design this morning, have to say it's much better. Recent tracks display correctly and the artist page looks less messy and confusing

When the new beta came around and it went from looking to what you're referring to as "old design" there were people saying the exact same thing you're saying right now.

for every "improvement", there are several setbacks.  the best thing last.fm can do is to never make another "improvement" ever again.  if it aint broke, dont fix it.

Artist pages on Last.fm aren't actually accounts - there's no login or email for them.  Instead, they work more like pages on Wikipedia  - you need to register a user account to edit content on them.  To do so, please sign up an account here: https://www.last.fm/join

For more information on artist pages and how to edit the content on them, please refer to the following help articles:

- I’m an artist on Last.fm and can’t log into my account. (https://bit.ly/2wdFiCW)

Please note however, brand new sign-ups and blank/unused accounts are not permitted to edit content on the website until they start actively using the site -- this is to prevent spam and vandalism.  Please refer to this article for information on how to unlock editing privileges on the site: https://bit.ly/2MJhVeR

Artist - Song Name is MORE logical!
I think that new variation Song name - Artist will be one of the most hated things from new updated design :/ Some people will never teach a lesson from their previous mistakes.

I hope they will fix Artist - song name soon in their new layout. I thought they already fix this in their current layout that they launched three years ago. As another user said, some people will never teach a lesson from their previous mistakes.

I do not like the new design at all. The old design was simplistic and looked much better.

The worst part is the 'now listening' front page. Why change the artist's to the right of the song and bold and spread the tracks out.

The layout seems like a change just to change somthing.

The old layout needs to be brought back as it was alot better than the current layout.

It looks like the tracklist is missing. Have you tried any other portable device or any other media player that can help you to track down listening report for that album?

P.S. I managed to find the tracklist for the album that you mentioned. Try to revise your ID3 tags and see if it works.

Your only solution is to delete them from your library and re-scrobble them manually. See this thread about the application that you can use to scrobble your tracks manually. In the meantime remove Twin Picks from your album artist field and add a real artist name to prevent this issue in the future.

Now I see the new design too. It's nice but the "Recent tracks" design is really not very useful.

As you can see there is clearly not enough space for the Artist and track names. And PLEASE change the order, it really should be ARTIST - TRACK, not TRACK - ARTIST.

Artists and titles do cut off right now at, I think, 32 characters. I've raised this myself on multiple occasions but I don't yet know if there's a plan to look to increase it.

Maybe using another font, Roboto is more narrow, I already use it with Chromium Browsers and a Font Changer Addon on last.fm and other websites. It looks like that:

A font change would be a great improvement! I use 'Assistant' in my Last.fm. I think Open Sans uses too much space in the screen, and it makes the layout look a bit strange. Also, the text gets harder to read. With another font the layout could look much better and lighter.

So the new design finally got to me. Thanks, I hate it. If it's just for subscribers for the time being, I'm really glad my subscription is running out, haha.

Jokes aside, what I dislike about this design is the fact that there's a lot of empty space, the old design was more compact and beautiful. Maybe you could offer an option like Gmail has, to choose between this version with big spaces between the lines and a more compact one.

By the way, I remember back when the site got redesigned the first time and you introduced the Song Title - Artist order people got mad, I guess it's less confusing now but I still prefer Artist - Song Title.

"Tracklists now lead with the track title (or album title if it’s a list of albums), for better information hierarchy and for consistency with most other music players"

You already attempted rolling this out during a major update years ago and user backlash was so bad you changed it back. What makes you think this will be better received this time? And what "other music players" are you referring to?

I use Spotify and have never noticed. Probably because it's always been that way and it's not something I actively look at when I'm streaming, but it bothers me beyond belief on my stats. The screenshots are horrid, so many song titles will be cut off.

Hi!

Thanks for the neat update!

Why/where has the voting for the correct track / artist / albums tags disappeared? When will there be again an option to remove things from recommendations? These two things are really the most important things that have gone missing after moving to the new version, at least for me, and I would very much like to see them back. I am subscribing to last.fm and lately I am not so sure if it's a good use of my money.

And I kind of find it disturbing that the first line has "scrobbles" and the others do not.

BUT! All in all, the site looks very fresh now. It's a start, right?

Since the correction system isn't fully functional yet - they gotta update like 3 years of frozen database - I am going to assume here those 'vote for corrections' buttons that were added to the post-redesign site were doing nothing (since we couldnt even SUGGEST the correct name anyways).

My guess concerning the missing voting option is that they are planning to implement a better version of it soon, i.e. like on the old site where you could actually fill in suggestions for a name correction.

Your recommendations are handled on the new Music page now, not on your home page, and you should be able to dismiss recommendations there by hovering the images and clicking on the X icon.

Yea I was talking about the old ones where you could suggest, I know the new ones didn't do anything. I hope this gets implemented soon.

Various Artists albums were *finally* displaying correctly under the old layout....and now with the new design, they’re back to messed up. Instead of an album with 20 songs by various artists, for example, it comes up as 20 albums by 20 different artists that just happen to have the same album title and cover art. Will this be fixed? A correct before picture and incorrect after picture are attached.

Thanks for flagging.  It looks like everyone seeing the new layout are no longer viewing the new scrobbles database (if they were previously).  I've raised this issue with the development team as I don't think it's intentional.

@Jon - I've also lost the old database access since the new layout has been applied to my page.

I also seem to have lost an excess of scrobbles through trying to correct some of the imported scrobbles during the time I had access to the new database. e.g. Say I imported 10 plays of a track that I had listened to on two different albums, correctly tagged album A (8 plays) and incorrectly tagged album B (2 plays). With the new database it split these 10 imported plays into 10 separate scrobbles from an "unknown date", which allowed me to delete just the 2 plays from album B, leaving 8 imported scrobbles of the track. However, since reverting to the old database with the new profile layout, all 10 scrobbles have been removed, I guess because all imported plays of a particular track were treated as an homogenous single scrobble.

I trust the amendments I made while I could access the database, of the type I mentioned above, will be reinstated when I have access again?

Any response to my above query? it's annoying that I've lost access to the new database AND seemingly a bunch of scrobbles I deleted/corrected (as mentioned above).

Thanks in advance.

OK. So, since I'm a subscriber, I've just had the new design applied to my profile and first impressions...

I'm not much of a user of the mobile version of Last FM, generally I use the desktop site, but the mobile arrangement seems slightly better than the desktop version:

I think having the track and artist names on two lines looks far better than the way the desktop version currently looks. The play button looks better on the right, too.

Also, I would say the black triangle of the play button is too dominant - it needlessly attracts your eye and looks rather ugly. I think a pure outline or pale grey would look better.

Similarly, I don't think the bold font of the track name is desirable. It visually emphasises the track name but I don't think it's necessary nor that it looks good. If anything, I would say it makes marginally more sense to emphasise the artist than the track name. Also, unless it's my imagination, the text looks bigger than before...? I honestly had to check I hadn't accidentally zoomed in the page. It feels a little needlessly spread out, as a general visual impression.

I would also agree with many others here that the Track Name - Artist Name orientation doesn't really look right to me. Please at least make this something that can be toggled.

In terms of our inner Library pages, I like the shading behind the scrobble numbers to add clarity; was it pale grey before? I think it's good that it now matches the pink palette of the annual scrobble chart; it feels more cohesive:

THAT SAID....the individual album pages look a mess because of the arbitrary way you assign artwork to tracks. If you're not going to use our scrobble data to indicate the associated release we've listened to that track the most from, then it ought to be the first release it appeared on (which will generally be the studio album). As it stands, because you use some "most popular" catalogue entry or something, it is a mess. Made all the more noticeable with this new layout. Exhibit A:

I'm sorry to say it but this looks terrible, in my opinion.

Personally, I would advise you hide a track's artwork on the album sub-pages of our library. It's unnecessary information to load/display anyway, but as I say, with the current way the catalogue works, it severely detracts from the look.

Sorry this is a very negative sounding reply but I'm trying to be honest and also constructive in my comments. I hope you find at least some it useful.

OK, I have some more positive feedback, lol

While I may have many gripes about our own pages, I do quite like the changes to the artist pages. The only real issue I have is that the main image which is acting like a header is leaving a lot of artists headless, eg:

I also think there's probably too much of the colour block on the left. I would suggest perhaps moving the main image to the left to some degree, and have it fade out on both sides. Currently, I think there's too much flat colour up there. This probably looks less of a problem on the mobile version of the site but I haven't checked.

I like that you've changed the album listing description to Recently Popular, and seeing the Events listed on an artist's front page is also great, as is seeing an array of alternative images. Generally, I like all your changes to these pages. Good work!

I also like the minor change to the "thumbs up" icon. It looks better being slightly bigger and an outline.

Same for me (first time I see the new layout on my profile).

Not necessary a bad sign, but my number of scrobbles looks too tiny :-)
I mean, several times I had a short struggle to find it on the page.
At least it looks tiny on my home laptop where the resolution is 1600x900; maybe on lower resolutions it scales and looks better ?
Could this be made a bit larger than it is now ?
Say something like 1.5 times larger.

I still don't like the current "song - artist" format of the list "Recent Tracks", but it surely looks waaaay better than the previous attempt. So much so, that now I suppose I would be accustomed to it easier :-)  I would enjoy even better if it would be a user choice.

Also, I had a strange situation when trying to add a picture for an album, which did not have any picture; since the artist also had no picture at all, I accidentally cllicked on empty space/square for picture for the artist (that is, at the bottom of the album's page, not in the upper right part, where the album's default cover is presented now); and I was directed to the procedure to add picture, but when finished I found that it was uploaded for the artist !
Okay, it's clear I wasn't very attentive, but I feel that the empty space should not direct my to the add picture procedure when I am on the album page, in this particular situation.
Anyone else feels the same ?

By the way ... the round-picture for artist/album seems to have ended it's time ? If so it's a pretty good decision :-)

I've just received the update for the new design today and honestly I'm not really feeling it. Will there be any way for users to switch back to the old design or is this permanent?

I'm glad you guys are attempting to fix the database and scrobbling issues but I don't really think any major design changes are needed for that.

I like the way the artist profiles look. The only disadvantage is that many performers are headless, as Elliot Robinson mentioned. It would be best to put down photos so we could see their faces. When the old gallery existed, we could see four photos of the artist. The current look is too ordinary and simple. As for the layout, you should expand the text, statistics, current list of listeners, current top listeners, listeners you know, as well as a list of current listeners. On the old site, you could see up to twenty listeners and thus discover new site members. With the current list of listeners, you can have a maximum of five listeners to see.

Most of the listeners are the same, and it's exhausting watching the same listeners over and over. As of advertisement's, it would be best to expel them and leave only advertisements designed by the Administration. Most of the advertisements are full of malware, viruses and unwanted content that should have no place in your service. You should solve the problem with the compilations of various artists finally. I'm not happy that I won't be able to listen to them without seeing how your service creates twenty or thirty pages for each track of the artist I've been listening to. Fix that already because it's not funny, and fix Artist title - track title. Don't repeat the same mistake that you made three years ago.

I can't believe we're back to 'Song title - Artist' again.

I also don't like the play button. Most of the music I listen to don't seem to have that option, and the icon showing up for a select few tracks here and there just looks horrible.

While the album art showing in recent tracks is okay, because it uses the album art matching my album tags, top tracks is a complete mess, with many tracks not displaying any album art at all. With recent tracks I at least have the option to turn off the display of album art. For top tracks that is not an option. Ugh...

And please tell me the long awaited fix to various artists albums that happened some weeks ago was not just for that fleeting moment...
