Website design update rolling out today

Hello!

From today, a small number of you will begin to see some exciting updates to the website. Here’s what you can expect:

Fully redesigned artist, album and track pages

We’ve updated these pages, giving them a fresh new look and a better layout. We’ve also added some more data and improved the functionality of these pages. Here’s what you can expect:

  • A new header that better shows off the artist image and gives every artist page a unique look and feel
  • More metadata on artist pages (e.g. when an artist was born, when a band was formed, etc.) and similar artists shown at the top of the page for easier exploration
  • Events are back! We’re now showing some upcoming events on the artist overview page.
  • A new scrobble stats graph on all pages, which shows the last 6 month listening trend (look out for those Christmas spikes)

  • Bigger album artwork on the album page. No need to expand any more!
  • Album tracklists can now be sorted by popularity, allowing you to easily see which tracks are the most popular on an album
  • We’re now showing similar albums on album pages, and more similar tracks on track pages
  • We’re also now showing some artist info and similar artists on album and track pages, so it’s easier for you to learn more about any new music you discover
  • For those of you browsing the website on your phone, the mobile experience on these pages has been vastly improved with a better mobile layout and finger-friendly tap targets

Updated tracklist and chart design across the whole website

In tandem with the artist, album and track page redesigns, we’re rolling out a new tracklist and chart design to the whole website. This update brings some usability improvements and provides additional functionality:

  • Tracklists now lead with the track title (or album title if it’s a list of albums), for better information hierarchy and for consistency with most other music players
  • Tracklists without chart bars now use a 2 column layout, which makes it easier to scan through a list and distinguish track titles from artist names
  • We’re now showing album artwork in tracklists whenever we can. Click the album art to go straight to the album page!
  • Chart bars can now be scaled to any size, allowing them to more accurately represent trends
  • We’ve added some useful options to the more menu (accessible by hovering on a row and clicking the the 3 dots icon, or by tapping the 3 dots icon on mobile). For example, you can go straight to your library from your recent tracks.
  • On mobile, you can now see which tracks you have loved in a tracklist, and also love or unlove a track directly from the more menu!
  • We’ve also made tap targets bigger on mobile, so it’s much easier to tap on the correct link or icon when browsing.

Other small design changes

You’ll also notice some other small design changes across the whole website, for example:

  • New button styles
  • Some new icons
  • A fun new love button animation! <3

Please note...

Not everyone will be able to see these design changes right away. We will be rolling them out to a small percentage of users first, while we monitor performance and fix any bugs. Eventually, all users will see the design changes. Additionally, some artist, album and track sub-pages will have the new design, but there are some that we’re still working on. These will be updated soon.

We’ll be continuing to roll out these new styles to more pages in the future, but for now we hope you enjoy the new designs. Please let us know your thoughts and if you spot any problems.

Thanks as always for your support.

Love,
Team Last.fm x

Just logged in and noticed the new design.
While it does look great, can we fix the issue where the artist name gets cut off under "Top Albums" in the grid view.
The actual album title wraps around to the second/third line, but for an artist with a long name, it does not.

Can we have this fixed, please?
Thank you.

I already got that refreshed version since I'm subscriber user, I like the new design, but I gotta be honest to you. I would appreciate more if you lay all your time and effort on cleaning up the tags and capitalization, mistagged album/song titles and duplicate albums (that are coming from digital stores) instead of relaunching the design. There is plenty stuff to do that is more important than the design.

I would assume that whoever is working on the new look isnt the same team involved with how the general site works, so, different "teams". Don't know tho.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled I hate the profile page layout for subscribers.

I just paid for a subscription and noticed that my profile page has larger bold text, double spacing and the song title listed before the artist's name like some horrible looking jukebox. I find this to be an extremely ugly design and there doesn't seem to be a way of changing it back. I much prefer the page design for those who have not subscribed and I will not be renewing if I can't revert to the previous layout.

I haven't been following this thread so I don't know if this has come up already: with the new design the red bars for most of my top artists (underneath the number of plays on the profile page) are shorter than the number itself. It's ok for my top ten artists, but after that the bar gets shorter and shorter - like this: Screenshot.

I think the minimum length for the red bars should be increased - it should always be at least as long as the number itself, like on the old design: Screenshot.

I know this is not a big deal, just thought I'd mention it as it doesn't look so hot.

We're still sorting out some performance issues with the new design.  Once they've been resolved we'll be able to roll this out to everyone.

Ignore the people saying to keep the old design. People said the exact same thing a in late 2015/early 2016 when the "old" design was the new design. Now it's changing again and you have the same thing all over again. People just don't like change but given time most adapt. Bring on the new design.

I like 99% of it. The only issue I have is that they flipped from ARTIST - SONG to SONG - ARTIST. And it makes far more sense, for last.fm, to show ARTIST - SONG. Much more readable and what not.

I never had a problem with Song - Artist. For me it makes more sense. When talking to people I would say: "Hey you know that song _____ by the band ____." IMO song is 1 and artist is 2. The way the new layout is configured (the last time I saw it was in October) song titles and artists were disaplayed in padded columns, which I thought looked nice.

My only critique was the fact that after a certain amount of letters the artists name gets cut off and it becomes: "instertartistnamehere.......". I hope this will be fixed when it's rolled out for everyone.

I simply don't get this. Some time last week the page layout did in fact revert to the previous look and I was very pleased that you had actually listened to reason. But now it has inexplicably changed back to the horrible new, chunky look with the listings in reverse order.

You just lost yourself a paying subscriber.

I don't get it: it eas clearly stated that the revert was temporary ! Why had you placed expectations on this ?
I'm much more comfortable with this new layout; I would probably chose a artist -song arrangement, but I could live with current one just the same; otherwise this layout is much better and useful.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Can I disable the new design for subscribers?.

So today I became a subcriber. But the whole design of the site changed, and it's a horrible design. Beside it being super ugly it's unpractical too.
For example, you can't even completely see the titles of tracks that don't even have a long title:

Everything takes more space than it needs/used to:
Why is it so much to the right? Why is the artist on the right? Why do the album icons have so much padding? I'd rather have them bigger with less padding. And again, some titles dont fit anymore because of this dumb design that would've fit before.

This is just plain ugly, not user friendly at all and too big, the banner takes up like half my screen when it obviously doesn't need too.

Overall this looks uncredibly professional. It looks like someone tried really hard to copy other sites to make it look professional but failed really hard. The people who made this need a serious UX course, this design is far from user friendly.
I really really really hope this is never getting released in this state because honestly it ruins a lot of the usability of the website for me.

Besides all this, my real qustion is: is there a way to go back to the old design? or is my only option to cancel my subscription and wait a month?

I didn't even get an answer to my question, it was just moved here? I guess the answer is all I can do is cancel my subscription.

I really hope you guys take feedback seriously, I'm really afraid because of how prematurely you released the 'new site' a couple years back that lost you most of your users. At least make everything smaller and it would look 100x better. Everything is so big now I have no overview, I browse the site now at 75% and it's way more torelable.

You were moved to this thread because you can find the answer you are looking for here if you do a bit of scrolling.

The design update will eventually be rolled out to everyone, and isn't meant to be a subscriber-only perk.

As for your criticism about the size of "everything", I agree. I don't even have the update yet, but I already use the site at 75%. I'm not too optimistic that the devs will ever do much about it, since this whitespace abounding, mobile-friendly web design is the web design style that's been "in" for a while now. I find that the quality of desktop experience in terms of overview and information density has been worsening throughout years all over the internet, not just on Last.fm.

Hi, just tested a bit a new design look. Have some thoughts there.

Basically it looks cool, especially new artist page look and new scrobble rating (would be great to see same graphic on personal page by showing personal day scrobbles)

- New recent plays making less space for long track names - it makes messy look.

- A LOT of translation problems and untranslated blocks (can i give a help with Russian language, are you taking beta-testers on board?)

- Very very slow. Every Last.fm page is like absolutely another website.. idk why Chrome loading every page that long, this is pretty sad, cause its a long-term problem from the beginning of redisign.

- "Charts" page translated on Russian as "Graphics" - totally worng. It should also translated as "Чарты". Anyway charts are so poor right now (i know its all about new database) but there needs some more statistics?

- "Live" is the most useless page on Last.fm so far. I know it was a start page for new users, but its really making no seance to visit for users

- "This shout is unavailable" can somebody tell a point of these undeleted blocks of blocked or censored shouts in a Shoutbox?

I also dislike how they designed the new „recent tracks“ and other charts lists. It is just messy and clunky, especially the padding, the shortened songtitles and the ordering. But I hope they fix that (can’t be THAT difficult?) because it could be really nice then.

I visited the Artist page, and I’m not happy with the way how you designed.

  1. Similar Artists should be on the top of the page on the right side.
  2. Recent listeners should be on the right side at the bottom of statistics not between an artist biography and shouts.
  3. Top listeners and listeners you know should stay where they were when the old design existed not at the bottom.
  4. Your listening habits should also be on the right side of the screen.
  5. The current layout for someone's listening habits is a mess, and it’s too small to see your listening count and your avatar when you see yourself on the Artist page.
  6. Trending tracks should be somewhere so everybody could see them not at the bottom.
  7. The tab "all tracks" is missing. I cannot find it unless I didn’t visit the Artist page and clicked view all tracks.
  8. The tab "albums" is also missing. I cannot see it unless I didn’t visit the Artist page and clicked view all albums.
  9. It wouldn’t be bad to do something about the album art because it looks messy and disorganized. I don’t see a reason why it should stand at the right side of the screen when it already stands as a banner on the top of the page.
  10. Artist - tracks should be fixed.
  11. Artist page structure is a bit strange. We got similar artists block duplicated - at the top of right sidebar and also below the shouts. I believe that sidebar one could be replaced with listeners block as it better suits sidebar column and gets out of main column's context. This is a terribly mobile-aimed idea, and looks messy as hell with all its scrolling needed to get most of the important information.
  12. Top listeners and recent listeners should be separated; not attached.

These are the only issues I found; otherwise, it doesn’t look that bad. I hope you’ll take what I said into consideration and fix these main issues.

Please please please fix Artist - track. The new tracklisting on profiles is so unnecessary and there's way too much padding. It looked so much nicer when it was compact, please stop changing good things and do something helpful like merging artist pages.

First of all let me say that I believe the new website lay-out in general is a great improvement. I really like the artist page lay-out and the bold song titles for example.

While I see there have been so many posts already with feedback, I am not sure if I mention anything new, but anyway, these are my suggestions to make the new website lay-out even better:

1) I personally actually don’t use the Love Track button, but I did read it in the Announcement: A fun new love button animation! <3, so maybe I’m looking over it, but I haven’t been able to locate this button as of yet.

2) Behind the number 1 position of the album and song on the artist scrobble page it shows the word ‘scrobbles’. From an aesthetic point of view I would prefer the word (if it has to be mentioned at all, because it’s rather obvious to be scrobbles) to be shown a little bit more upwards, behind the Scrobbles, Albums, Tracks row for example.

3) This is maybe less website lay-out related, though in some way it is, but I have recently found that the primary album cover of certain tracks that is shown at the section ‘From The Album’ at the Track page, is being dominated by relative minor album releases that are mainly released through Apple. Having album covers from minor releases instead of the actual album cover creates unnecessary album cover uploading or otherwise will show the grey album upload icon, while instead it could have been the actual album cover which usually has already been uploaded. Here are two examples:

https://www.last.fm/music/Future/_/Ain%27t+Coming+Back (shows the Apple remix release from DJ Rest insread of the actual album cover, while the official album cover has been uploaded and is actually on the first spot if you click on the overview button below the primary album cover.

https://www.last.fm/user/Foytl/library/music/Future/FUTURE (when I look at this album at the moment, 13 of the 17 track of this album have these remix album covers (uploaded or not, which I think negatively impacts the album overview lay-out experience).

4) I’ve seen the same happen also with the Latest Release album section on the Artist page, where the Latest Album Release doesn’t seem to be related to the artist in question. Here are two examples:

https://www.last.fm/music/Future (EP Mati, does exist but is released by a different artist (Future-E)

https://www.last.fm/music/NAV (song Lost, unable to find on the internet and has only 1 listener)

I hope these suggestions have been useful and good luck with the finalization process of the new website lay-out!

HI,
I would address only the point no.1:
the heart besides a song (for instance the on the "top tracks" section in an artist page) does have a short animation when you click on it (in order to "love" that song).
I don't know how funny is this :-) but yes, is a new behavior; it does this only when loving the song; when un-loving, it simply empty the heart-symbol (sometimes it's confusing since you are not sure if the un-love was indeep finished).

It would be nice if you elaborate a bit on point no.2 since I don't find very clear what "scrobbles" you have in mind;
I mean, on the artist page I see first the name of the artist; right under the name there is the button for "play artist" and further to the right the general statistics about the artist: number of listeners, and number of scrobbles (in a shortened way: 77K instead of 76970 -- for artist Stive Morgan)
Something like in this screen-capture:

so, which word in particular did you find not-in-the-right-place here ? :-)

Thanks, I found the like button now. Looks fine :-)

Ah, I wasn't completely clear on that one I see now, as there are two artist scrobble pages. I meant the artist scrobble page that shows the artist scrobbles that are linked to a specific profile, so if you've scrobbled Stive Morgan in your example, click on your scrobble amount on that page and then that page should show the specified word mentioned in point 2.

I just realized I forgot another suggestion of improvement: when you have set an 'obsession' on your profile and you want to delete several scrobbles on a certain track, it is likely to mis-click the 'set track as current obsession' button, which is directly above it. In this way that track can become accidentally your 'current obsession'. It might be more user-friendly to move it a little more upward in the selection menu.

I don't mind the new tracks layout and the new artist pages, but like, there's too many aesthetics going on at once and nothing matches. I wish the header for our personal pages were the same as the artist ones, with our profile picture and the faded out gradient design.

I don’t like the fact that you have put a list of similar artists at the bottom of the page. You’d better put them on the right side on the top of the screen as you did when you put the first three similar performers. There is so much space that you can add three more. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to fix the comments section because it’s stupid to see only the first five comments while the remaining comments are hidden. Overall, it doesn’t look bad, but I was expecting better. Please fix Artist - track. The new tracklisting on profiles is so unnecessary, and there is excessively much padding. The BETA version looked so much nicer when it was compact. You should also do something helpful like merging artist and album pages. It’s destroying the charts.
