Website update 13 March - Editing scrobbles (subscriber feature)

Hi everyone,

We've just added an exciting new feature for subscribers - editing scrobbles!

See below for more details on how this works. If you have any questions or feedback on using this feature, please let us know.

Cheers,
Laura & the Last.fm team

Where can I edit a scrobble?

Scrobble editing is a feature available to subscribers.

To edit a scrobble, go your user profile or library and choose a view that shows a list of your scrobbles - that is either your recent tracks, or a track page in your library.

Open the "three dots" menu that is visible when you highlight a scrobble, and choose "Edit scrobble".

This shows a dialog where you can change the names of the artist, track, album or album artist that you've scrobbled.

How does scrobble editing work?

  • You can change the name of just the artist, track, album, or album artist, or all
  • There must be an artist and a track name; album and album artist are optional, although you need an album artist for an album, and an album when you add an album artist
  • When you save your changes, they are applied straight away
  • You cannot change the time of a scrobble
  • The dialog shows all names as you scrobbled them, even if you have corrections enabled
  • When you have corrections enabled, bear in mind that they may be applied to your edits (this means what you enter may not be what you see after saving your changes)
  • It is not possible to change just the upper or lower casing of names, due to how these are stored in our database
--
This feature has been updated on April 25th, 2019 with a bulk editing option, see this announcement for more info:

Edits are not visible through the API, at least through user.getArtistTracks.
For instance, I have edited my scrobbles of the "Iron" album by Ensiferum to remove alternate forms such as "Iron (EU Version)" or "Iron (2009 Edition)". However, the API request https://ws.audioscrobbler.com/2.0/?api_key=mykey&artist=Ensiferum&format=json&method=use... still returns a scrobble for "Iron (EU Version)".
Could you please make the API results reflect edits so that they remain consistent with the UI?

Actually, this looks trickier than I first thought. I also observed the opposite problem: https://www.last.fm/user/DragonOfWisdom/library/music/Avantasia/_/Farewell shows half of my scrobbles of that track having "The Metal Opera, Pt. I" as the album, whereas the API always returns the tracks with the corrected album name, namely "The Metal Opera" (for instance, in https://ws.audioscrobbler.com/2.0/?api_key=mykey&artist=Avantasia&format=json&method=use..., the album name in the scrobble done on 26 Jan 2019, 17:33 is "The Metal Opera")

This problem is something the team is aware of, I identified it myself during the testing period. The API also presently doesn't update the totals for a given track when it has been edited.

I think they've mentioned this before, but this will continually be a "subscriber only" feature. Jon said this on page 1 of this topic:

All time, as the original scrobble date cannot be changed anyhow. As far as I know, this will stay a subscriber-only feature.

And to be honest, it makes business sense to do so, to keep it subscriber-only, I mean.

It's much more of an incentive for people to subscribe, even for a short period - far more so than blocking ads or the Last FM merchandise discount (lol).

Yes, as stated earlier, this is going to remain a subscriber-only feature.

The subscription is not expensive and you could always pay for one month, do the most pressing edits, and then cancel.

I find it really bizarre that you're charging money for improved usability, which seems ironic considering all of the features Last.fm has shed in recent years. Charging money to correct user/server-side error... Sorry Last.fm, but I'm left scratching my head as to what your business plan is going ahead. I'd be more likely to subscribe if you weren't killing community features like forums and blogs, but that ship has long sailed...

It depends on the user, jacobbrett.

Personally, I never used or have any interest in using general-chat style forums or blogs on here; I'm much more interested in the stats recording and analysis/displaying of said stats.

As for the charging element, the monthly charge is nominal and once amended the edits won't change back, so (as members of the Last FM team have pointed out) you could just pay for a single month's access, correct everything, then cancel your subscription.

How is Last.fm to attract new users, let alone subscribers, if they make it harder for you to care about your data in the first place? Never mind that a new user is probably more likely to have erroneous tags from the get-go. Instead, frustrate them with a paywall? Of all things to charge for, it feels stingy.

Last.fm has potential, otherwise I wouldn't have stuck around waiting for it to happen. I feel like a bunch of value has been taken away since the relaunch. This isn't the kind of feature that would convince me to subscribe.

They aren't making it harder for us to care about our data. We've never had the ability to go back and edit scrobbles before, so they're actually enabling us to give more care to our data by adding this feature, even with the £3 per month "paywall". There's also a whole host of comments in this thread with people stating they are now going to subscribe, so I guess it is working.

If you can't afford a one-off payment of £3 to correct any scrobbles you may wish to update, then I feel like you're expecting everything for free and Last FM shouldn't be aiming at users like yourself.

If you, as you claim, care about your data, you shouldn't have a problem setting aside £3 (even if you occasionally want/need to repeat the payment) to do so. It's literally the cost of a take-away coffee or a sandwich for a month's access.

Regular users can still import their data and see it displayed as stats and graphs; that's still a major selling point. This new feature is like an advanced feature and I think it's fair enough that it's given a premium position as a subscriber-only feature.

Hey, thanks a lot for this function, obviously a very helpful and welcome addition to the website.

I have to ask though, I’m not sure if I possibly misunderstood something but is it correct that I always have to go back and edit incorrect data I’ve scrobbled after every listen?

At first glance I interpreted it as after I have corrected the song title and album data, listens after my edit — they would then follow suit. This however, doesn’t seem to be the case (unless of course I misunderstood something).

Right, you can only edit past scrobbles in your library, neither future ones nor correct the global database for all users. That would be handled by redirecting wrong scrobbles to the correct ones and merging them, but it needs more time to implement and/or reactivate this feature by Last.fm.

I'm finding there's quite a few tracks I can't edit. The UI behaves as if it has updated, but it never applies. Always seems to be a single scrobble of a type of track. Have a feeling it may be related to loving the track. Examples, this one: https://www.last.fm/user/cameronjonesweb/library/music/Gideon+ft.+Caleb+Shomo/_/Survive and https://www.last.fm/user/cameronjonesweb/library/music/Good+Charlotte+feat.+Simon+Neil/_/Reason+to+S...

Maybe you've encountered the situation that's affecting me also: I'm currently experiencing that lag in scrobbling from Spotify ("now playing" shows that it receives from Spotify, but apparently the scrobbles are not there after finishing the play); it happened before, so I'm not very worry about this (eventually they appear alright in my recent tracks).
At least this I hope...
Perhaps this is also affection your situation (edits that are saved, but do not appear on refresh/etc)

For the examples you've listed, you don't have scrobbles for those tracks.  Has the edit has been applied now?

Hi sorry for the late follow-up on this.

Just so I understand the problem before I report it on to our devs, can you please clarify exactly what you're trying to edit this track to?

https://www.last.fm/user/cameronjonesweb/library/music/Beartooth/_/The+Lines+(Low+Gain+Mix)

What exactly happens when you try to edit it, compared to other tracks?

For example, does it give you an error at all? Or does it appear to succeed, but not change when the edit window closes? Or does it appear to change but then revert backs when you reload the page?

It appears to change, but when you reload the page it hasn't changed.

It looks like the issue is when trying to edit a scrobble to match the data of another scrobble with the same timestamp. Due to the limitations on iOS there are times when there are multiple scrobbles with the same timestamp.
Examples:
- This to This doesn't work
- This to This doesn't work
With both of these, there is already a scrobble of the destination track with the same timestamp as the origin track

Hey, I was going editing a few scrobbles and found that one track just won't correct itself. If I try and edit it to the correct title it can't see the change and rejects the edit

Incorrect (NÝ Batterí)
https://www.last.fm/music/+noredirect/Sigur+R%C3%B3s/_/N%C3%9D+Batter%C3%AD

Correct (Ný batterí)
https://www.last.fm/music/Sigur+R%C3%B3s/_/N%C3%BD+batter%C3%AD

I don't have scrobble auto-correction turned on because I like to make sure everything is correct at my end and avoid incorrect merges.

Even if I literally copy and paste the track name from the correct page (Ný batterí) and manually scrobble it, it posts the scrobble to the wrong one (NÝ Batterí). This could just be an issue of the merging not working I guess

Thanks, I've flagged this with our development team to investigate.  I can see that there's a correction in place to redirect NÝ Batterí -> Ný batterí, but unfortunately that won't work since you have corrections turned off.

I think it might be a variation of a long standing problem we've had with some special characters (most notably the turkish dotless i), and if so, it may take some time for us to fix I'm afraid.

I edited all the scrobbles of a song, changing only the album name, but the old tag keeps appearing in my library with only 1 scrobble. But when I check, all scrobbles are properly edited. Can anyone see this for me?

It's showing this ghost scrobble when I look at your page, too. It could just be a bit of a delay in the site. Keep an eye on it over the next week and see if it disappears - if not, it may be something the staff has to address manually.

So, I've tried it. But there are some things I don't understand. I've tried to fix this title, "(Acoustic)" instead of "- Acoustic".

- Why I have to change all the single scrobbles manually and not all of them at once?
- Is this for future scroobles too?

They all have to be edited individually and it doesn’t affect how future scrobbles will be presented, you’d have to amend those too.

There is a bulk editing script that would help you to change all of them in one go, but yes, the changes are per scrobble and do not affect future scrobbles.

Bulk editing and the ability to save your corrections are both under consideration by staff. That doesn't mean they're coming as such, but the ideas have been floated.

That’s great to know they’re taking on our feedback. Any ideas on whether they’re considering allowing deleted scrobbles to be reinstated for editing? It’s easier now to accidentally delete a scrobble being one click above the edit button.

I do not, but this script (that I actually made myself!) might interest you. It utilises Tampermonkey to add an "E" button next to scrobbles that brings up the edit window. This means you don't need to use the dropdown and can't accidentally delete something.

In my book, paying for the feature is quite reasonable, cause LastFM maintaining isn't free for its owners; besides, the necessity to subscribe decreases abusing the feature to a certain extent. But if someone needs to edit only a dozen scrobbles, 3$ seems a bit too much. Although that editing, if done by many users, may influence the database positively.

My suggestion is that the feature should be made available to all users for a short period of time during a year - say, for a 1-2 week winter vacation, just like a gift :-)

Just wanted to report another bug with a track appearing to be fixed but reverting after a refresh:
https://www.last.fm/user/FishStik5/library/music/B%C3%A9la+Fleck/_/Water+Gardens

Trying to correct the album Tabula Rasā to Tabula Rasā.

Behavior: After I click "Save edit", the yellow fade animation with the correct information is seen. When I refresh, the album is reverted to the old name. I noticed some lag in the database updating so I made sure to wait a day for it to change but it's still the same.

Thanks!

Hi, this is great, i suscribed again just for this and already edited hundred of tracks, thanks. But, is no longer working properly on safari for iPad (it does on the iPhone though) as i cant see the three dots (like in the photo, is the same on the scroobles page for each song) and until a few days ago when I clicked on the song title worked to show me the three dots and edit, but now it directs me automatically to the song’s website before I’m able to click on the dots (which appears anyway when I clicked on the song).

Hi Jorge,

A ticket has been created to support the mobile / touch interface for ipad layout.  In the meantime, it should be possible to bring up the 3 dot menu by tapping on the white space in the row (not the track title / artist name, but the space between them).

Yeah, if you tap there or the other side of the artist name, the dot menu should appear next to the artist name.  At least it should in chrome, I'm not able to test safari.

Either way, I've asked our developers to support this properly.

Want to say THANKS for giving this feature.

BUT, You're really made me a hell day to rename my favorite artist all 3000 SCROBBLES one by one.

Ain't would be easier to give an ability to make a tag edits a bit less raping. And not to put DELETE & EDIT so close...without canceling delete.

P.S. I used to change all tags one by one cause of favorite artist change his stage name not so far.

P.S.S. One of the most useful things in tag editing is make some cleaning in scrobbled Albums titles. All these (Delux) (Redux) (Target) etc.. But this way of editing by one track make this cleaning useless.

The new bulk edit function is fantastic, great work guys. Still my only quarrel is how easy it is to accidentally delete a scrobble, could this be made more difficult? For example on this page in the first picture, if you hit the delete scrobble button it will delete it straight away, could the warning box that's on the second picture be added to stop us from accidentally deleting scrobbles we are trying to edit? I've spoken with others and i'm not alone in doing this.

Agreed.  The new bulk feature is superb.  But that delete button has to either have a warning, or better yet, the option to toggle it on or off.  With edit, there is much less need for delete.  Let me change if it appears in my preferences.  Also, just moving it away from the Edit button would be helpful.  Great work!

Greatest thing, guys, looked forward to it for ten years, even more!

Username: K_i_m_i.
One question I've got so far: I switched Garbage's "Cherry Lips" to "Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)". Although my library counts right, Desktop Scrobbler does not. Only new scrobbles of "Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)" work for him.

Is it fixable?
