Features
  • Add 'recently popular track' and 'latest release' to artist pages
  • Improved the cold start process for new users
New users will get recommendations in their homefeed and profile before they scrobble
  • Artist top listeners
  • New design for subscribe page

Bugfixes
  • Always show playbuttons in homefeed
  • Horizontally tile Track My Music background
  • Use correct affiliate on library track pages
  • Fix playbar synchronisation issue while watching YouTube videos

We're working on notifications (honestly) and some other fun stuff.

Cheers,
James

nice updates on the artists' pages. I just stopped refreshing here, thinking new sprints would never arrive.

still waiting for all the events stuff, I won't repeat not to be annoying (but if you like to encourage interactions among users, as it seems, events are important just as the shouts and notifications...)

I like the "Popular This Week" and "Latest Release" showcase. I like to keep up with new music from artists I love and this will help remind me of releases I might have missed. It's nice to see another old feature return too (Top Listeners), even if it is a rather basic version.

I have just one request for the top listeners feature though. It would be nice if there were an option to view their library for that specific artist. At the moment I have to manually edit the URL. (This is also why I wanted some kind of search feature within the library). If someone's a top listener for an artist I want to check out, I'd like to see what tracks/ albums they've listened to most.

I'm also interested in how the top listeners are calculated. From what I've seen so far the time frame looks very large. It's also likely that profiles such as this one and this one will be taking the top listener spot on many pages.

Elliot, the song should be scrobbled in a middle of the song (for example If i listen song with 3 minutes length will scrobbled in 1:30 minutes). I listen untill the middle from the song if i don't like this song. I am not cheater and i hate cheating!

I've looked at a few sets of Top Listeners, and I'm fairly sure the ranking is based on plays in the past 1 year, as calculated a few weeks ago.

Compare this to the weekly top listeners on the old site, which were ranked according to the figure (plays for artist in week)^2/(total plays in week).

After I saw the for example the user "sl_bg" pretty much as one of the 4 top listener of different artists, I think it's clear: This feature has to be adjust.

Alternatively, Last FM needs to block or reclassify accounts that are for businesses.

I really don't see why a business would want or need a scrobbling account - seems entirely pointless.

The Top Listeners feature seems kind of pointless given how many of them seem to be blatantly cheating. On the Top Listeners for one of my favourite band, one guy has apparently listened to them almost 28,000 times. They only have three albums, with about 8 tracks per album. I worked out that the band's song he'd played the most, he had listened to for a total of about 345 hours. Lol yeah okay.

top listeners should be related to the last week/month/similar, so this problem (the altered stats) should become less relevant. they will probably correct these things among the "bugfixes" in one of the next sprints (so in 2, 4, 6 months.... who knows)

I agree. The time frame should be much smaller. Showing the "current" top listeners for the last week/ month would be good. It would also give more users a chance to become a "top listener" - for anyone interested in that.

That's certainly a problem. Check out this guy with 590,175 Scrobbles for Soulfly! It's rarely an issue with lesser-known artists, though, but I agree it makes the feature somewhat pointless.

That is nothing. I have this person on my personal list of friends who has almost 600 thousand scrobbles for Metallica. I even have another one who made it reach over 360 thousand scrobbles for Dream Theater too.

It would also give more users a chance to become a "top listener" - for anyone interested in that.
I second this; there should be also an option to view more top listeners by clicking "view more" button, showing only top four listeners is somewhat selfish.

And when will be possible to delete artists and tracks from the library? This is so useful and is not working yet.

Probably when they successfully managed to
1) separate multiple artist pages
2) fix the 'Various Artists Releases' issue
3) merge multiple alphabet names for artists eg. The Japanese and Romanic page for an artist.

To be fair, Jens, this really shouldn't effect an individual user's ability to keep their library clean/more accurately.

I'm so desperate for the return of the ability to remove "unknown date" scrobbles. Ugh.

@Elliet: In normal cases you are 100% right, but for the past few 14 months you can't say this website going through a normal beta phase anymore.
Due to everything that has happened I think the LFM wants its user to have as less library involvement as possible, until they can fix the three aforementioned issues/user requests first.

Let me try to explain my "guess" from a non-programmer point of view: The three aforementioned points are 3 important issues to get a cleaner library AND which require staff/developer interventions AND have sitewide consequences. Therefore the developers prefer working with a library with limited functionality for it's users in order to avoid extra issues while solving the above three.

Don't get me wrong... I fully understand the desperate need for this delete function after all these months and fully support the quick return of this and other functions (alphabetical view, picture view,...), but the staff wants to take some sitewide content-related steps before the will allow users to intervene in their own libraries.

For various artists compilations, on 'Top Albums' display, it's not rendering correctly. It takes the last artist's name as the album artist and it doesn't display cover artwork even though you add it to the database. This new database hasn't resolved the issue with scrobbling various artist.

...And it's been a year since this error came out. "Various Artists" page lost over 130 million scrobbles, if it wasn't for this mess, they would have by now 150 if not 200 million scrobbles.

This is definitely a flaw; sl_bg is not a top listener of a band Type O Negative. SimonBisek is a top listener with 70,429 scrobbles. sl_bg is an account where he mostly scrobbles pop, electronic, rockabilly, mainstream, hip-hop, and R&B.

Despite the weird spammy accounts that "scrobble" tracks a hundred times a minute showing up in the top listeners, I think I prefer this algorithm to the previous one; it was really weird to see people who scrobbled an artist, say, 200 times in the top listener when other users had scrobbles of more than ten times that amount.

Would it be possible to able to click the "Top listeners", and a page would come up where it shows more stats such as who had scrobbled the artist most within a given time frame? That could be cool

I also STILL miss this view and wish to view 500+ items on a single page in list view like we could before.

Things I've wanted for a over a year...

- Account wipe and re-sync (as my play totals are so inaccurate)
- More data to be displayed on a single page in all library views, before we had 500 but now it's only 50, which I still haven't got used to and don't want to.

Something I've wanted for a few years.
- A stable and fully functional desktop scrobbler, the thing crashes pretty much every day and it messes up my lists because of duplicates and missed scrobbles.

There's lots more but off the top of my head.

Quuuite good, if I can say - from four things added, two are useful for me, two are something which could be replaced by more important things, but still, not bad. Also, also, it's so nice to see "best listeners from artist" - old Last.fm feature is back, yay!
"Latest released" and "Popular This Week" songs could be not on top (just to be more inconspicuous) but at this moments it looks good, I need just to get used to it here.

Anyway, I'm waiting for something serious. Especially if we face the fact there was month to update everything. So, well done, guys, and I wish you'd bring back also something else (and big) from old Last.fm.

Edit: I'm just wondering why people "following" me are now splitted in two sites - does the counter minimized users amount to just 30/40 per site? It was more clear before.

Some way to fix up our libraries (merging/editing mis-scrobbled songs, albums, etc)?
Neighborhood radio?

These are the things I've been waiting for.

I noticed they have a tendency to not work on things that we ask for.

Maybe, just maybe, if we keep quiet on what we want, they might actually work on it?

In your opinion, is more important fun stuff or add this functionality? I just want to understand how much users still have to wait for the implementation of this basic functionality.  I know you do not care about the views of users, you know what to do, but all the same - when?

About artist top listeners:
1. Filter out listeners with more than 1 million plays.
Especially http://www.last.fm/user/sl_bg and http://www.last.fm/user/sl_p
They are bots who are top listeners to every major artist!

2. 4 top listeners are too few. 10 would be nice!

Thanks Hugo.

1. Yep, I agree those two need to be filtered out.  I've written a ticket to address this.
2. There is a top listeners page in the works, it wasn't quite ready enough to meet this release, but should be available soon.

So...there something realy bothers me..
Whenever I go in one's library, and I click at the artist, I get to the listening stats of the user instead of the artist. ITS REALY ANNOYING.
Is there any chance you'll change it to be like it used to be ? (click on artist-->artist, click on number of listening to an artist in user library-->listening stats)
get what I mean ? thanks

and just one more missing thing for me, the personal tag library (I want to see all the artist I tag under a specific tag and right now its impossible)

In my opinion this is the way how it should work. So you didn't only see the artist, you can also see which albums and tracks by an artist a user was listening to. How else you will find out this? In this progress you are able to recommend a special album or track of an artist. In summary, you can dig deeper into someones library. And right below the artist name you find the link to the artist page.
The best compromise you can find in this case. Agree?

Well Andreas, just like it used to be, that a click on the number of plays near the artist name will lead to that page, and a click on artist photo/name leads to artist page, just like it used to be, the way you enjoy both world
For me its furstrating because I tend to open a lot of new windows for each interesting library I find, you see, a lot of artist, and now I have to go in each and every one of them again and click on another link. Its a good waste of time
When as I said, you can enjoy both worlds like used to be, numbers for stats page, picture for artist page

Thanks for your feedback gal2659, I know exactly what you mean, and I've done the same thing with multiple tabs myself.

Thing is, the library interface is potentially confusing (especially if you fiddle with date ranges), so we have to keep the navigation consistent across the 4 main tabs (scrobbles, artists, albums, tracks), even at the expense of making it slightly more cumbersome for advanced users.  Keep in mind also that the scrobbles tab doesn't have a scrobble count next to it (since it's marking individual scrobbles), so you suggestion of using scrobble counts to link through to the library wouldn't work on that page (you could use the date, but I'd argue that that's not obvious and inconsistent).

Maybe there's another solution?  For example, clicking the artist photo might work well as a secret shortcut link; although that raises a similar problem with consistency, where on other tabs, that action plays the album or track.  Probably the answer here is an ugly 'jump to artist page' link or icon; but I'm open to ideas here.  I'll discuss this with our designer, perhaps he can think of a good way to do this.

What happened to "You first scrobbled this track on MM DD YYYY" on a track's page?

It was useful to reference it quickly without having to dig through several layers of library to find the track.

Thoughts? Ideally the number of plays would be a link to the user's library for that artist - just like the current profile charts.
