Website update - 15th January

  • 10
  • Announcement
  • Updated 4 years ago
Welcome,

The first release of the year! It's a fairly small one because of the Christmas break, but here's what's gone live since last time:

Features
  • Reveal large album artwork on album and track pages
  • Default all non-Spotify countries to YouTube
  • Some changes to prevent spam event creation

Bugfixes
  • Prevent double-click causing resubmission during event creation
  • Fix problem where events could not be created when viewing the site in Spanish
Sprint 176 will include some more work on images plus other tweaks.

Cheers,
Team Last.fm

The fix for the artwork problem on recent tracks is probably what I expect the most.
Another question: is a decent events search planned?

I've been adding events in de past half hour / hour and I'm getting more 500 server error time outs than in past days.

Has the update already been rolled-out sitewide or is that still an ongoing thing?

There was a problem with the event service. Things were kicked and restarted a few days ago which should have cleared it. Let me know if you still see problems.

I've been creating events but there doesn't seem to be a way to search for events yet. Also can't seem to search for events in my area.

I follow the publication of updates for a long time, so far I have only read, but after today's announcement, I had to register and ask a few questions and say some things .. I really do not understand, or I'm stupid or something .. can someone of "responsible staff" explain to me how it is possible that the website that was founded in 2002, which has tens of thousands of users, takes 5 months (for now)  to make improvements or even worse, to re-enable the old options?? How someone can afford it publications/excuses  like this today and do not ask yourself does it make any sense or maybe is that okay for the users?? I would rather work nothing, than in Last.fm but it is almost the same.. As you go, the old settings will go back to 2020, and the full version of the site probably will not even reach..

a significant update for users in the non-Spotify countries that use Lastfm as a music-player.

@ all the other users: let's hope February will bring the first 2016 update (with events section's fixes+completion, neighbours, A-Z library and other real improvements)...

Merowinger, I think we have plans to reintroduce this (it was mentioned in a meeting a couple of weeks ago), but it would be worthwhile creating a new topic for support PNG uploads specifically so other users can find it and share support.  I can then link that to a ticket in our own issue tracking system, and update you when that ticket gets prioritised.

I guess there's not a whole heap of people batch-loving their tracks, seeing as noone has mentioned it so far. But anyway; If you click on the heart button, it "loves" the track, but refreshes the page. Which means there's unnecessary reloading of the page for every single track loved. You can imagine how frustrating this is. Please do fix this for the next update (which I hope comes soon.)

Edit: In case you haven't noticed, but album artwork upload doesn't take .jpeg, only .jpg (Even though it asks for .jpeg..) It works by simply renaming the files, but it's still an annoyance.

Hi. Do you always see the page fully refresh when loving tracks? It should submit the love asynchronously (provided JavaScript is turned on).

Could you try loading a page, leaving it for ~30 seconds, and then clicking a love? I want to find out if there's maybe a problem with JavaScript loading or if it's loading slowly. Are you able to play tracks through the site?

I tried the experiment you mentioned, and it made no difference. The page still refreshes after every click on a heart.

On an unrelated note: Didn't we used to be able to click on the 'Listeners' number to see which users listen to that particular album/song? Might've already been mentioned though.

Edit: I also don't use the web-player these days. At least not since before the new design.

IIRC, there was a separate link called listeners. You clicked on it and it took you to a page of listeners for the past two weeks (or 30 days?).

Thanks but can you please explain why things are taking so long to do? This update was not even really worthy of it's own thread. We haven't even been given a proper explanation as to why the site was destroyed and rebuilt.

We need to be able to resync our libraries too please as lots of my song totals don't match my iTunes. I don't dare ask how long it'll take for this to be implemented. haha.

Agreed that it was a x86-based server farm but with different specifications and while you want every software to run on every hardware with any amount of resources, it's not always possible and most certainly not the best practice. You might argue that we could make our software run on the new hardware but any experienced software developer can tell you that unlike common belief, there is an expiry date for every software too. Otherwise, you would still be running Symbian on your mobile.

Like it or not, the old site is not coming back. But, we are still committed to make this site better and add more features as quickly as possible.

Sachin -

If it were a choice between running Symbian on my mobile or the new fangled-dangled version of iOS that's missing the feature of storing contact information, well...old version me buddy!

I understand that software has an expiration date.  What it seems like, to me at least, is that Last.fm prematurely put that expiration date on the old site.

I want you to be honest, Sachin.  If Microsoft pushed out a new version of Edge that, say, didn't work with HTML5 and displayed every GIF as a broken image link, and then completely deprecated the old version of Edge, *and that Microsoft had been beta-testing the new version of Edge for (April to August) number of months...
...and for the last (August to January) number of months, every time you tried to figure out IF HTML5 support were coming back, you were met with silence...

Look, you tell me.  Would you believe that Microsoft were engaging in anything remotely close to 'best practices'?

I just feel like you've taken my old yet functional 2002 Civic and have given me a pretty horse and carriage as a replacement, telling me that, eventually, that horse and carriage is going to be a Tesla Roadster.  Well hell - why didn't you just wait until it was a Tesla Roadster to give it to me?  Why give it to me at the horse and carriage stage, especially when you're taking away my Civic?  I gotta get someplace, and that horse and carriage is not making the 2 mile 10° incline.  My Civic did.  Yes, I realize it takes some effort to fix the radiator on the thing.  But once that radiator is fixed, my Civic will get me over that hill.

So it *still* looks like Last.fm f**ked up bad somewhere along the way and doesn't want to own up to it.  It *still* looks like there is a project manager or 2 that has some explaining to do to someone.  Honestly man, I really do not get it.  I imagine you can't really disclose any details on *what* was cause for the expiration of software, but I am really having a difficult time figuring out what set of circumstances really would have resulted in the current state of Last.fm beyond mismanagement.  I get what you're saying from a technical standpoint, but it is quite weak justification at best.  It has the same explanatory power as saying "the old site (and the functionality it had) cannot come back because the turboencabulator broke".

Also, Sachin, I guess just another comment:
Generally speaking, in the software world, when a beta version of a new product is pushed out live, does one make the commercially available release version disappear before the new beta version graduates to release?

Seriously.  I think that you guys would have a better leg to stand on if the current site weren't branded as a 'beta'.  That is another thing that makes these explanations smell like bullshit.

When you're talking about website, calling something beta is usually just an excuse to say "it's not finished" if something breaks.  Gmail was in Beta for about 5 years, but I don't remember ever having an issues with it.

Mind you, Gmail wasn't a replacement for anything.

<Communication> Sheeza; I forgot to bitch about Events; I guess it is a major software change to allow someone to simply type in the location?

I swear; thinking of a plan going astray. Events as far as the eye can see - now stop and turn around and look.

This should be a lesson of a how-not-to-do-it-plan.

Any ETA on recommendations working properly? (both events and artists) and being able to add artists to ones library with the simple click of a button? This also calls for the "0 play artists" to re-appear.... Not to mention the possibility to dismiss recommendations.

Also, event merging, cancelling, shouting all still aren't working. And the recently played tracks seem to favour compilations over full albums (artwork-wise) and bonus tracks are mostly showing up blank...

I hope you had a great Xmas/NY-break, and I also hope LastFM will finally become more and more useful in the coming month(s) - we (the users) have been waiting long enough...

Lol, launch an unfinished excuse of a website makeover, go on extended christmas break. Well played. Any ETA on flagging bad quality videos? I'm still checking back now and then, but maybe I should just stay over at Deezer. (which btw does not scrobble to Last.fm despite me giving Last.fm permission etc)

Sounds like Deezer may have an issue with their scrobbling implementation.  I'm not sure you can blame last.fm for a 3rd party app not working properly when other apps (some, not all, admittedly) work 100% percent of the time. The player I use has never missed a scrobble.

Have you tried reporting it to Deezer?

When are we bringing back the comprehensive "listening now" page with the section of people who listen to a particular artist the most in a specific time frame?  I remember there being  5 pages on the old lastfm where I could scroll through and see people just like me who enjoyed the same artist as much as I did. That was an excellent way for me to find users I'm compatible with...
