Website update - 16th August

Hey all,

We just released Sprint 190. Interesting bits from this release include:
  • Allow event search radius to be set
  • Combined playbar and masthead
  • Option to order albums by release date
A first version of shout notifications is included but can't be accessed yet. We're looking to turn this on in a few sprints time.

Cheers,
James

If you all want to get all those music gigs in your city or around the world you should use songkick.

Okay, nice. But i want to delete some artists of my library, some songs and i can't. One year since the new lastfm and you failed to bring back important options that were useful for all the users.

Option to order albums by release date
I would also like to be able to easily reverse this sorting, i.e. oldest albums on top (or least popular album). As it is now, I would have to use the pagination at the bottom and find the last page. Maybe this would also make sense for the shoutboxes. And being able to set this as my default in my website settings would be nice as well.

Spoken, as we had spoken (together). It would also welcome an alphabetical sorting option.

Still, as many people have mentioned already, we have the issue of missing artwork for tracks. I am getting tired of these ugly gray default covers on my profile and in my library when I go through a lot of effort to upload artwork to the site. Not to mention that on some records the song list is missing. By the way, when will you return the BBC? (Bulletin Board Code(s)) Please; Thank You. WHY? Come on we want this to work. They work on Wikipedia commodities but they do not work in shouts.

You can still see that not in aggregated form but individual scrobbles if you click on a track in your library or by going to this url http://www.last.fm/user/_/library/music/<artist>/_/<track>

I'm aware that the scrobbles contain the associated album details, but if it's not aggregated, then it's not very useful.

Please consider bringing back the mini-lists of all the releases each track has been played from by a user and displayed in their library, or at the very least the correct artwork next to each track of the album a user has scrobbled it the most from.

Sachin (who might want to set us on fire for complaining)
lol, indeed. I'm grateful he is at least talking with us about this issue.

And now the tiny video window is forced even more into the corner. Bring back the old YT video player.

Or even better, give us radio without videos. If we wanted videos, we would go straight to YouTube.

If you don't want videos then you can change source to spotify.

clicking on Last.fm logo and HOME leads to the same page, why not rename HOME to DISCOVER?

Home is a bit misleading as I thing of my profilepage as Home which now is the icon on the top right. lots of mouse movements to get there and also goes for the search option (in my browser on my desktop). I need en use those two a lot each day and would like them to be more central. or have one of them more to the top left which my eyes tend to look first on a page.

search is a bit crazy > first go to the extreme right to continue at the extreme left. Have both on on side or both in the middle but this is just crazy lots of mouse movements and clicks. This website still likes to endorse more RSI than decrease that. Plus way to much empty useless white space.

Do you think we could have a playlist inside the events? for example a  "Play artists in this event"  or "Play the Lineup" like in each band page or genre page. That would be awesome.

thanks

The old site had a feature like this called Festival Radio which made sense to listen to. I don't know if there are plans to reintroduce it though.

This new player in the page is slightly worse than the previous from when the site was still "beta" :-)
Currently the "progress" bar of the playing is barely visible; mostly because now is just a tiny-winy bar (not larger than 2-3 pixels, I suppose), and it's ABOVE the player, making it even harder to spot it.
After you finally identify the progress bar, you have to hover the mouse over it, in order to simply see the position in the song; which position is only in the form of remaining time; no option to change this if you wish to do it (okay, it happens that I like this better than to display the time passed from the song, but I still want to be able to change it somehow).
There's even a funny thing about it: when the song is just beginning (only first 2-3 seconds) and you hover the mouse over this progress bar, the number with remaining time left doesn't even fits the screen; it slowly grows from left to right, as if coming out from a tunnel :-)

Is this intentionally so ?
It's just a new player, rebuilt from scratch, and it will get new features as time goes by ?
Or are we left with this forever ?

P.S. The "Home" button/link in the upper right corner is somehow misleading: it leads me to the general page www.last.fm/home , and not to MY homepage as I expected.
I prefer to have this link to my homepage, and this "home" (recommendations, actually) to remain only on last.fm sign/logo.

  • Allow event search radius to be set
great! but still many venues doesn't show in events for city (no matter how big radius is). for example events for grodzka 42 in krakow.

I find it mind boggling that in 2016, after all the websites that exist around the web with sorting options, that you haven't created the reverse option for sorting albums by release date; newest-to-oldest and oldest-to-newest. This shouldn't have to have been pointed out to you by numerous users on here.

There are also a lot of incorrect dates being applied to digital releases where I'm guessing they're using the date it was added to the digital retail stores rather than when the music was actually released originally. Not quite sure how you're going to be able to fix this - I feel like it'll likely need to be done through user help, submitting the correction information. After all, any sorting is meaningless if the information being used to sort is incorrect.

To end on a positive, I suppose the header looks nicer. ̄\_(ツ)_/ ̄

Combined playbar and masthead
I like that the new playbar now shows the correct album cover with a direct link to the album page if available which wasn't possible before. If there is no album page on Last.fm yet, there should be a small popup informing me about this when clicking on the generic cover.  It is also interesting that it sometimes differs from the album cover shown in my recent tracks list when scrobbling from Spotify. ;-)

By the way, it seems that the problems with Spotify ads pausing the radio playback are gone, at least for now after listening to my Mix radio for about an hour. Is it possible to have longer programs in our personal radios in the future? I guess the maximum 25 tracks sent to Spotify are not enough sometimes when Spotify does not find them in their catalogue and therefore skips some of them.

But the thin red progress bar on top of it is too tiny in my opinion, it should either be thicker like the one in YouTube videos or maybe at the bottom of the playbar, so you would notice it more easily due to the dark background.

And linking to our homepage twice with the logo and the "Home" link might be unnecessary, too, if available space is an issue in the navigation bar. Maybe adding the direct link in the dropdown with our avatar thumbnail would be enough, and calling it "Recommendations" then as well, as new users might ask themselves how to find them.

Last but not least the Forehead.fm issue is back due to an even smaller background banner, maybe simply making it larger again would make sense, or finally replace it with something else like a top  5-10 artists thumbnail lineup.

Maybe something like this?

Still hoping we can use our own images for the header. It adds a nice personal touch. Customization is a good thing! Using a script to do it means only I can see it on my profile.

Just for the fun of it .... On the very bottom of any page on last.fm, there still this red band (strip ?) that says "You’re viewing a beta version of the new Last.fm website. Leave feedback" (and the link to "leave feedback" still works).

Is this something that slipped away from reviewers of the changes or rather something intentional left there ?

Loving the new header. Big fan of the last.fm logo loading graphic, nice touch.

First saw it on a 1024x768 monitor - thought the responsive design had kicked in and switched me to a mobile view. Was happy to see I was wrong :-)
