Hey all,

We just released Sprint 190. Interesting bits from this release include:
  • Allow event search radius to be set
  • Combined playbar and masthead
  • Option to order albums by release date
A first version of shout notifications is included but can't be accessed yet. We're looking to turn this on in a few sprints time.

Cheers,
James

It's really great to see you guys are taking more initiative in providing updates at a faster rate. I mean if we got 2-5 sprint updates a month then I can guarantee you we won't mind each sprint only containing 2-3 minor updates, since you know, 1 minor update every 5 weeks was frustrating..

However it seems I'm in a bind. If I use the "fully customizable last.fm" script, then there's nothing on the header for me to go to my profile. I can't even search for anything:
http://puu.sh/qDqSM.jpg

If I disable it, then I have to deal with the huge chunk of white space, which I made a thread about over a month ago, that still has not been resolved:
https://getsatisfaction.com/lastfm/topics/ad-placement

Yeah yeah I know you guys need ads to generate revenue to keep the site going, but the ads make my computer slow and as I mentioned on the thread I just linked, I would disable adblock if the ads were actually located...well, anywhere else.

Is this something we can anticipate to be fixed within the next sprint, or do we have to wait for someone to fix it with a usermade script?

Also it's been 6+ months and the last.fm mobile app is still not working. Is that ever going to be fixed or do I need to look for a third party app just to mark my tracks as loved?

hallelujah, an *useful* improvement in the events' search and in Mid August :)
I hope venues adding/editing/merging (and list of past and future events for a venue) will come back soon, so that the search section will be complete and restored.

And also we need the possibility of seeing which people are attending events... I shouldn't explain this, but: seeing which people are attending > more following/followers/shouts/social > MORE PEOPLE ON THE SITE! :)

Even if I change the radius still some events do not appear in the list even if close to were I live and have indicated to be interested in this.

Example:  http://www.last.fm/event/4238227+Julia+Holter+%252B+Julianna+Barwick

further, I'd ike to see gigs from Cologne as well as Antwerp and Brussels and no matter what I set as centre even with a radius of 100 KM it does not do the job! Radius should be higher 150 or even 200 KM . With busses, trains or car it's only 1,5 - 2,5 hours drive. A real fan would not see that as to much to see their favourite act. I see lots of folks in Amsterdam from Germany, Belgium, North of France and even from the UK. So for some a cheap trip to and stay in the Netherlands is well worth the travel.  So some folks in London would like a radius of 300-500KM.

Guys, It's Europe, many countries are small and travel can be cheap, easy and fast!

Agreed, I think a graduation increasing 10km up to 100km as the maximum is too fine and unnecessary. It would make more sense with steps like 100, 200, 500 and even 1,000km for people living in bigger countries than on a small island. ;-) And at this time of year people are willing to travel larger distances for their favorite festivals, e.g. to Wacken in Germany.

Agree! In the north of germany 100 km isn't a great distance. You may find 1 (one) concert hall (if you don't live in Hamburg ;-) ). What should say the people with a little more space around the house like Finmark (Norway), Kanada, Russia ... Outside the big metropolises.

Combined playbar and masthead

I do like even if it needs a bit getting used to, and I'm mis-clicking my icon to get to my profile page and end up on the features page :-(

could there a bit more empty space between Features and Home-button/icon

100km seems not enough to show all events from my country. Is there any way to achieve it?

The new header/ player design looks nice, I guess. It's a bit neater, takes up less space and I like the central "Last.fm" logo. But it only looks good with my custom header image. Because there's less space now for the header, artist images look even worse than before.

And still, as a lot of people have mentioned already, we have the issue of missing artwork for tracks. I'm getting tired of these ugly grey default covers on my profile and in my library when I go through a lot of effort to upload artwork to the site.

Yes, but I think they will put posts, journals, playlists and the playing source in that space, like it was before. And if we are lucky enough, maybe even another footer/ad thingy (yaaaay).

Yeah the thinner header gives even less space for the artist images, I'm guessing most will see now even more foreheads or scalps on the banner.

Option to order albums by release date:
The way it is now, newest at the top, is fine for acts with just a few albums. For big acts and acts that have been around alot there will be a lot of obscure (digital) labels releasing / streaming hit-albums or live-release which are of modest interest to many fans. It'd rather see , the first released album on top. or at least to be able to choose the way to order.

Keep in mind that Last.FM isn't a music database, so it'll always have a lot of obscure and wrong dated releases/reissues posted by music labels.

if those obscure labels do not get entered at Musicbrainz they probably do not have an official page (with date) here at Lfm so in theory would not show on the albums releases pages.

Option to order albums by release date
I think this option should also be displayed right above the albums in the in the main artist page, just like the option to sort shouts according to the user's preference.

I like the combined playbar and masthead very much and also especially the new enhanced search bar, it feels more interactive than the previously simplistic bare-boned one. Although I'm immensely disappointed about the delay of the shout/followers notifications. Was anticipating this update with bated breath mainly because of the long-awaited arrival of those two. Oh well, great work all the same guys!

My dream for the next few sprints will be to once again having the ability to customize our profile: about me, custom header image, custom artists display (I miss this!) and albums up to 16 along with the charts, artists image grid, and limit some ad space...you know, having the ability to express ourselves with our profiles like before. Having our recommendations and features to our liking.

Not like now where the website, one year later, isn't to 100%, we get things we don't want, not to mentions they are finding more ways to push what's considered "good" down our throats.

Oh well, back to my pillow I go, but before that, two words, Various Artists!

Good night.

Seriously though, how is this basic ability STILL not present after well-over a year of beta mode?

The inability to remove tracks with "unknown date" attached are doing my head in.

The new header looks really nice. I still kind of have an issue with only seeing foreheads when it comes to my header image (even though those are some amazing foreheads, but still).

Things are getting better, I'd say, still looking forward to notifications, BBCode, 'About Me' sections, groups, forums and journals (a girl can dream).

Hi LastFM

It might be another team maintaining the Last.fm Scrobbler for Windows, but maybe they are reading here too, so...

I have many records/tracks featuring guest artists. I have tracks like that tagged with multiple Artist-tags, but only the "main artist" tagged as Album Artist. When scrobbling from my Squeezebox setup this works fine. When an Album Artist tag is present in a track, the scrobbler in the Squeezebox LMS server is clever enough to choose the Album Artist tag to scrobble instead of (multiple) Artist tags. However the Windows scrobbler always scrobbles the Artist tags (all of them if multiple).

For example take a look below at two tracks from Trentemøller's "Lost" album where a lot of guest vocalists appear. The first two scrobbles (the bottom ones) was scrobbled from the Windows scrobbler, the last two (top ones) was scrobbled from my Squeezebox system. It was the exact same flac files being played:

The big problem with the Windows scrobbler's way of doing it, is that the artist link in play-listings doesn't point to the right artist page and the track-links doesn't point to a page from where I can continue to the album. Plus it also generally fragments the track-play statistics on Last.fm.

At least a configuration option to change the behavior of the Windows Scrobbler would be nice. I don't know if the current behavior would still be preferred by some?

/Stig

Hi, thank you for useful update. Can you, please, now create a page with all new releases from all artists from our libraries? It would make main page of site much better)

Thanks for giving us faster updates, finally!

The header looks better, but the header images look smaller now and are even worse than before...

I hope you guys are planning on letting us customise our own eventually. You must know they look absolutely ridiculous as they are now, since we can only see random parts of artists' faces.

It's also interesting that the Desktop Scrobbler App will replace the default missing artwork image with the current main artist picture - but the website doesn't.

LOL, so basically the limited and old desktop scrobbler is more capable than the brand spanking new version of Last FM that we've been test-running for the past 18 months?

Spotify is the most horrendous music website ever. Not to mention the staff members who have no capability to fix the problems that you have with a subscription. Do not make me start on a part where customer service is pulling dumb excuses when it comes to a country limit. If you ask them why their service is not available in your country, their only answer will be:

Subscribe for recent updates to let you know when Spotify will be available in your country.

Which it means, wait for next 10 or so years to make our service available in your country.

search option: do not like it is now it's slightly worse than it was.

I like it to work like google, that is that you can drop a text directly in a field, preferably strait in the middle. I  do a lot of searches daily, adding events, so it's a lot of extra mouse clicks
