Website update - 1st August

  • Announcement
  • Updated 3 years ago
Hi everyone,

We just released Sprint 188. Here's what was in it:

Features
  • Improved feedback when shout actions error
  • Restyled footer, with features carousel

Bugfixes
  • Stop unavailable Spotify tracks crashing player
  • Show unavailable message in place of shouts by deleted users
Last week, we also made replying and voting on shouts available to all users. Enjoy.

Right now, we're doing some more work on shout notifications, improving the experience around large conversations, and sorting shouts by popularity.

Cheers,
James

I agree. All I want from last.fm right now is some way to retrieve the tags I curated for over a decade on this site--even if it's just a big CSV/JSON/XML/whatever file. Until they show that we can trust them again by letting us have our own data back, I'm certainly not going to contribute to the site any more... :(

did you also make the text overlay on album and artist pics slightly cleaner? maybe i'm imagining things

notifications for new followers would also make sense, in addition to that under the 'followers' tab rather than 'follows you' appearing under a follower's username (that's kind of obvious) perhaps it should say either 'you follow this user' or 'you do not follow this user'

I had the same idea and suggested it to the staff, hopefully they will consider to add some kind of auto-scrolling for the Features footer, so we get the whole picture, not only the last three articles.

Is there a way to remove the new footer? it just adds more clutter that I don't need or want. I'm just trying to view something in my library and it's right there, getting in the way.

Hi. Sorry about this. Does the problem go away if you refresh the page?

*edit*: My mistake, I thought the footer was appearing over the pagination but there isn't any on that page.

I'm just trying to upload some artwork for this new release, because we have to do that manually for whatever reason, and look at all of this nonsense I have to go through...

I have to load it up again on every single page. It's just in the way.

Yes, why don't you just remove the whole shout (if the person who left it has deleted the profile)? It's looks bad and it takes a place of another shout that actually exists, if you know what I mean.

The new Features carousel has replaced the three recent articles section on the right side of artist pages etc. which seems to have been overlooked by many users, see e.g. this related Reddit thread.

My favorite bugfix will probably be this one:
Stop unavailable Spotify tracks crashing player
Looking forward for shoutbox and other notifications.

I don't mind having a better looking Features section at the bottom of each page, as long as it doesn't get in the way of doing the usual editing work. That lonely link in the top navigation bar does not seem to invite many people to visit this part of Last.fm which deserves a bit more attention in my opinion. These are not ads, by the way, but infos about Last.fm activities outside of the personal scrobbling statistics box. These can also be found on their Twitter and Facebook pages, as I have mentioned in the Reddit thread.

I also like the new footer design below Features, but still miss a direct link to the scrobbler download. Maybe the "Goodies" section would fit.

I understand that it's not an ad, but it might as well be. It looks just like the "Top Music Stories" advertisement. More clutter. More mess.

I'm interested to know how many people actually requested something like this. Because I haven't seen any threads about it. Now just because I won't be using it doesn't mean others won't, but is it a popular feature? Do people care? Because from what I can gather they don't - at least not now considering there's a million other more urgent things that need attention.

If people use it, good. But I don't care for it, and I don't want it constantly popping up in my face on every page I visit.

Sooo... on the special "Features" page (the one James hinted  us above: www.last.fm/features ) we have these things called "features" on ... 11 (eleven) webpages, right ?
And now on this bottom carousel we have ... 9 ? (if my count was correct, that is the number of displayed features on this bottom carousel).
Err.. why ? Which one from those 11 pages are more important and get displayed here in this list of only 9 ?

Looks and feels like those so-called helpers in Windows: you add some more often used apps on the taskbar (by pin-ining them there); but the taskbar rapidly gets filled with these pinned icons, and now you get (windows 10) the tile region of the start menu with supposedly some apps more likely to access frequently; thus now the start menu gets longer and longer.... and you finally to use rather that "most used" list in the start menu ... hopefully this will never get moved from that place, and never get changed with anything more "useful".
Don't you think this is the same impression this carousel makes for us ?

Probably the most recent ones, I guess. But there should be a direct link to the Features overview in the carousel, too, maybe with a header.

"The new Features carousel has replaced the three recent articles section on the right side of artist pages etc. which seems to have been overlooked by many users"

How about improving the webpage design layout for the users instead of pushing things down in our throats. Honesty, if not a lot of users were checking the `features' page then there is a reason why.

I'm sorry, but all of these petty things that you've been giving us lately should be done after and only after you give us the big, important things that we need, and that we used to have. All of these little things are insignificant and won't change much when it comes to user experience. How about groups, forums, about me sections, BBCode, notifications, etc...?

Not quite stressful for me, but the "carousel" with features is displayed by my Firefox after a short time of getting the data (that small circle that chases it's own tail).
I'm not very sure if this happens in other browsers, but every time you refresh a page, or open a new open, when you go to the bottom of this page, you have this short time for gathering data (it does not last more than 1 or maybe 2 seconds, but there IS a short delay before displaying the content of this carousel).

This delay used to manifest, also, when displaying the shouts ! Now it isn't like this any more for shouts.

I was used to it when for shouts, so now when it is again "with me" at the bottom of the page ... I'm not bothered any more, but others may not like it that much :-)

For some strange reason, I had encountered the very same bug @James Joul is facing, portrayed in the screenshot he provided above. As in the footer appearing at a level much higher than you guys originally designed it to show up. So it gave me the illusion that this is the way it's supposed to display every time I navigate from page to page.

The problem went away upon logging out, clearing the cookies and history. Now the footer appears only on the very bottom of the page. TBH I don't mind it at all if stays there, I rarely scroll to the very bottom of the page at any rate.

After looking into it a bit more, I believe it's because I'm a Subscriber. To non-Subscribers there's a bunch of ads down there, pushing the footer further down towards the bottom. For adblock users there's a blank white space where the advertisement should be. For me the footer is pressed right up against whatever's there on the page, like shoutboxes.

What's strange is that I'm not a subscriber (though admittedly using adblock) and faced this issue for a bit... But your reasoning makes total sense. I hope James Scott and the party will look into this anomaly now that you've narrowed it down to the cause.

As an experiment I went incognito (with Chrome) and turned off adblock. To get to that same album pictured above I went from:

Profile: 6 ads
Library (Via Recent Tracks): 2 ads
Library Artist: 3 ads
Library Album: 3 ads
Actual Album Page: 6 ads

For anyone who doesn't use adblock, that's 20 ads to get to an album page, with a footer on every page. See what I mean about this clutter thing?

On my trying with Chrome, it renders pages on last.fm somehow different than Firefox.
On every page I see a significant white space between the useful content of the page and this bottom lines where lies now this carousel.

With or without adblock activated.
It's pretty curious how Chrome displays the page: initially the carousel is immediately under the page content as in James's screenshots, or mine posted earlier; after around 1 second or so, it redisplays the page with a significant gap between the content and the carousel !

Granted, when adblock is de-activated for last.fm, I see an add that looks more like last.fm recommendations; it an ad, nonetheless:

this "Top Music Stories" thing, with links to articles on zergnet.com .

With adblock active, that "Top Music Stories" do not appear, but still Chrome has that gap above the carousel.

May this be some geographical location related setting ?
On all my tries, I experienced ad placements only above content of the page (between header, and real content) and on the right side of the page; never so far on the bottom side, above the current carousel, as in James's screenshots.

The very first impression when you see, now, the bottom part of the page(s) is that this new band with "features" is getting atop of the content, but if you scroll around a few seconds more you convince yourself it is not.
But still ... it is somehow annoying , especially on pages with little content; for instance this band's album list:
http://www.last.fm/music/Northern+Oak/+albums

You almost get to think those images in the "carousel" are album covers for this band, isn't it ?

Can't this "carousel" be somehow smaller, and/or with a larger or at least a distinct margin that makes it more obvious of what it is?

Hey James!
I vote like James for the new footer on only one site. That should be enough, really. The new shouts for everyone and the bugfixes are surely a good sprint. But don't you think so, it's time for a open and visible agenda, a ranking of sprints you are intend to do?
Many users waiting nearly desperately for specific tools like groups or tags. A open list for all users would make the waiting period more bearable and would also help to relax. What do you think about that?

After one week of no response may I ask again? What does the staff think about a public working schedule, a kind of ToDo-Ranking?
I like to suggest this. Not the first time guys. Until now I have got not one single reply. Ok, you have a lot of important things to do and I'm just one of million users, but I'm convinced, this is a really good idea and am interested to diskuss this point with you.
My main argument is this: A for everyone visible ranking of sprints which have to be done, is able to easy the mind and negative feelings of the most users which have some. Everybody could see: "This is my target, here we are and I can calculate the patience I have to bear."
I repeat myself: It's a pity, that some support questions are answered and other not. And this suggestion wasn't answered anywhere else. To ignore it, leads to James Jouls statement, you're only cherry picking and I wish, that I don't have to believe that. When I edit a wiki, or answer support questions, I work for last.fm too. So can you support me with my suggestion?

James Joul:
...I'd rather actually have some continuous communication with staff members about what's happening right now, and what's going to be added in the future.
Ben XO, Official Rep:
If you are asking if you can stand behind me all day watching over my shoulder whilst I do my job, well, even my boss doesn't get to do that.
James Joul:

@ Ben - All we want is a progress report. What's being done now, and what's in the works for the next week/ month. We're left in the dark here, just being told that our beloved features are "under consideration", or often left without a response. Are the staff in these forums dedicated to troubleshooting, or are you working on the website right now? Like I said, left in the dark.

This is part of the problem. Users are asking for more and better communication from the staff, but the staff seems to feel like this means we want a draconian breakdown of everything they've done each day.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I really appreciate communication from the staff, even if it's a simple "interesting idea/we're aware of this and hope to do X about it". Apart from anything else, stupid as it may sound, it humanises you - you're not an abstract entity that we can all bitch about.

Again, for me, having an approximate timeline would be fantastic - even if it was updated with delays etc. Could you not look at doing a monthly timetable of things you'll be working on? I get that some people would be abusive if their particular feature missed its expected roll-out date, but you're getting abusive comments already, so what have you really got to lose? I think most people on here, squabbling aside, are quite reasonable and understand that things are hard to state with certainty and won't be set in stone.

Ultimately, we're all music lovers trying to create and mould the best vision of this site.

Not quite correct, isn't it ?
Exo is a name of more than one artist, and not all of them spell this name as EXO ! (Gheorghi Penkov who uses this name as artist name spells it like EXo ! -- see it in the wiki for this artist).
So, maybe this will be addressed when they finish that huge task of disambiguating artist names shared by at least 2 artists.

Why is one of the most requested site features being blatantly and annoyingly ignored?
If you can add a "Carousel" section that, literally, no one asked for, you should be able to add a fully customizable "About Me" section.

Why is this happening? Why are you choosing to ignore the "About Me" section?

That is a good suggestion silly music lover.
I would appreciate a control button in my settings for "TURN FOOTER OFF" like "Hide recent listening information" or "Disable shoutbox on my profile" too.
Do you think James, you can add this option to the current sprint shortly? As far as I see a lot of user would vote for that.

Another thing is arranging shouts based on upvotes. Wouldn't it be nicer to have them chronologically, from oldest to newest? This way anyone can make ten fake accounts, just for the purpose of liking their own shouts and keeping them on the top.
I don't know, it just makes more sense to keep the newest shouts on the top.

"anyone can make ten fake accounts, just for the purpose of liking their own shouts" - lol

I agree that shouts should be kept chronological. There's a horrible trend, I believe driven by Facebook (and overly its subsequent acquisitions), where things are never displayed chronologically for users - this makes for a very irritating browsing experience.

Even if a site, like Last FM, decides to order things by "most popular" or an arbitrary algorithm, there should always - ALWAYS - be the basic option to sort chronologically.

That carousel has to be one of the worst 'improvements' I've seen getting released.  Be happy I didn't record and post my first reaction when I saw them: A gigantic WTF + bonus curse words. This cannot make a good impression to potential new users.

Now, a couple of hours later, I think I can get used to it on home, profile and artist pages, but not on other pages/levels, but that doesn't mean I like it.
I never used the former presentation of that 'part of the website', simply because I don't care for the artists involved in those activities.
