Hi everyone,

We just released Sprint 188. Here's what was in it:

Features
  • Improved feedback when shout actions error
  • Restyled footer, with features carousel

Bugfixes
  • Stop unavailable Spotify tracks crashing player
  • Show unavailable message in place of shouts by deleted users
Last week, we also made replying and voting on shouts available to all users. Enjoy.

Right now, we're doing some more work on shout notifications, improving the experience around large conversations, and sorting shouts by popularity.

Cheers,
James

I agree. All I want from last.fm right now is some way to retrieve the tags I curated for over a decade on this site--even if it's just a big CSV/JSON/XML/whatever file. Until they show that we can trust them again by letting us have our own data back, I'm certainly not going to contribute to the site any more... :(

last.fm: how many ads and/or useless clutter do you think you can cram in one single page? there's more to come, innit?

RIP last.fm @ this footer. It used to be a good site, but not with these ads and annoying clutter.

Also, the "this shout is unavailable" thing is NOT a good idea. I strongly recommend it is turned back, because it looks dumb.

Yes, why don't you just remove the whole shout (if the person who left it has deleted the profile)? It's looks bad and it takes a place of another shout that actually exists, if you know what I mean.

I'm sorry, but all of these petty things that you've been giving us lately should be done after and only after you give us the big, important things that we need, and that we used to have. All of these little things are insignificant and won't change much when it comes to user experience. How about groups, forums, about me sections, BBCode, notifications, etc...?

Guys, I totally understand that you need the Ads revenue to help keep our beloved site up and running. But this footer you've shoved into our faces is horrifyingly obtrusive and makes navigating the site stressful!

After looking into it a bit more, I believe it's because I'm a Subscriber. To non-Subscribers there's a bunch of ads down there, pushing the footer further down towards the bottom. For adblock users there's a blank white space where the advertisement should be. For me the footer is pressed right up against whatever's there on the page, like shoutboxes.

What's strange is that I'm not a subscriber (though admittedly using adblock) and faced this issue for a bit... But your reasoning makes total sense. I hope James Scott and the party will look into this anomaly now that you've narrowed it down to the cause.

As an experiment I went incognito (with Chrome) and turned off adblock. To get to that same album pictured above I went from:

Profile: 6 ads
Library (Via Recent Tracks): 2 ads
Library Artist: 3 ads
Library Album: 3 ads
Actual Album Page: 6 ads

For anyone who doesn't use adblock, that's 20 ads to get to an album page, with a footer on every page. See what I mean about this clutter thing?

On my trying with Chrome, it renders pages on last.fm somehow different than Firefox.
On every page I see a significant white space between the useful content of the page and this bottom lines where lies now this carousel.

With or without adblock activated.
It's pretty curious how Chrome displays the page: initially the carousel is immediately under the page content as in James's screenshots, or mine posted earlier; after around 1 second or so, it redisplays the page with a significant gap between the content and the carousel !

Granted, when adblock is de-activated for last.fm, I see an add that looks more like last.fm recommendations; it an ad, nonetheless:

this "Top Music Stories" thing, with links to articles on zergnet.com .

With adblock active, that "Top Music Stories" do not appear, but still Chrome has that gap above the carousel.

May this be some geographical location related setting ?
On all my tries, I experienced ad placements only above content of the page (between header, and real content) and on the right side of the page; never so far on the bottom side, above the current carousel, as in James's screenshots.

Hey James!
I vote like James for the new footer on only one site. That should be enough, really. The new shouts for everyone and the bugfixes are surely a good sprint. But don't you think so, it's time for a open and visible agenda, a ranking of sprints you are intend to do?
Many users waiting nearly desperately for specific tools like groups or tags. A open list for all users would make the waiting period more bearable and would also help to relax. What do you think about that?

After one week of no response may I ask again? What does the staff think about a public working schedule, a kind of ToDo-Ranking?
I like to suggest this. Not the first time guys. Until now I have got not one single reply. Ok, you have a lot of important things to do and I'm just one of million users, but I'm convinced, this is a really good idea and am interested to diskuss this point with you.
My main argument is this: A for everyone visible ranking of sprints which have to be done, is able to easy the mind and negative feelings of the most users which have some. Everybody could see: "This is my target, here we are and I can calculate the patience I have to bear."
I repeat myself: It's a pity, that some support questions are answered and other not. And this suggestion wasn't answered anywhere else. To ignore it, leads to James Jouls statement, you're only cherry picking and I wish, that I don't have to believe that. When I edit a wiki, or answer support questions, I work for last.fm too. So can you support me with my suggestion?

James Joul:
...I'd rather actually have some continuous communication with staff members about what's happening right now, and what's going to be added in the future.
Ben XO, Official Rep:
If you are asking if you can stand behind me all day watching over my shoulder whilst I do my job, well, even my boss doesn't get to do that.
James Joul:

@ Ben - All we want is a progress report. What's being done now, and what's in the works for the next week/ month. We're left in the dark here, just being told that our beloved features are "under consideration", or often left without a response. Are the staff in these forums dedicated to troubleshooting, or are you working on the website right now? Like I said, left in the dark.

This is part of the problem. Users are asking for more and better communication from the staff, but the staff seems to feel like this means we want a draconian breakdown of everything they've done each day.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I really appreciate communication from the staff, even if it's a simple "interesting idea/we're aware of this and hope to do X about it". Apart from anything else, stupid as it may sound, it humanises you - you're not an abstract entity that we can all bitch about.

Again, for me, having an approximate timeline would be fantastic - even if it was updated with delays etc. Could you not look at doing a monthly timetable of things you'll be working on? I get that some people would be abusive if their particular feature missed its expected roll-out date, but you're getting abusive comments already, so what have you really got to lose? I think most people on here, squabbling aside, are quite reasonable and understand that things are hard to state with certainty and won't be set in stone.

Ultimately, we're all music lovers trying to create and mould the best vision of this site.

Why is one of the most requested site features being blatantly and annoyingly ignored?
If you can add a "Carousel" section that, literally, no one asked for, you should be able to add a fully customizable "About Me" section.

Why is this happening? Why are you choosing to ignore the "About Me" section?

This would be a nice feature for Groups if they were to exist. It really would make more sense if you'd tackle this thing the other way around, I think...

That is a good suggestion silly music lover.
I would appreciate a control button in my settings for "TURN FOOTER OFF" like "Hide recent listening information" or "Disable shoutbox on my profile" too.
Do you think James, you can add this option to the current sprint shortly? As far as I see a lot of user would vote for that.

Another thing is arranging shouts based on upvotes. Wouldn't it be nicer to have them chronologically, from oldest to newest? This way anyone can make ten fake accounts, just for the purpose of liking their own shouts and keeping them on the top.
I don't know, it just makes more sense to keep the newest shouts on the top.

"anyone can make ten fake accounts, just for the purpose of liking their own shouts" - lol

I agree that shouts should be kept chronological. There's a horrible trend, I believe driven by Facebook (and overly its subsequent acquisitions), where things are never displayed chronologically for users - this makes for a very irritating browsing experience.

Even if a site, like Last FM, decides to order things by "most popular" or an arbitrary algorithm, there should always - ALWAYS - be the basic option to sort chronologically.

That carousel has to be one of the worst 'improvements' I've seen getting released.  Be happy I didn't record and post my first reaction when I saw them: A gigantic WTF + bonus curse words. This cannot make a good impression to potential new users.

Now, a couple of hours later, I think I can get used to it on home, profile and artist pages, but not on other pages/levels, but that doesn't mean I like it.
I never used the former presentation of that 'part of the website', simply because I don't care for the artists involved in those activities.

No one wants last.fm sessions. No one watches your youtube channel, why do you want to link to this so prominently in the banner? Videos 4 months old have 1000 views. I have vaporwave tracks with more youtube views.

Listen to everyone: fix your site. God damn.

You want people to subscribe to this website and improve the resources that you desperately need to avoid barraging us with lame ads featuring justin bieber?  Try actually implementing fixes that we've asked for repeatedly - and bothered waiting around this long to see if they'd ever come back!
