Website update - 1st August

  • Announcement
  • Updated 3 years ago
Hi everyone,

We just released Sprint 188. Here's what was in it:

Features
  • Improved feedback when shout actions error
  • Restyled footer, with features carousel

Bugfixes
  • Stop unavailable Spotify tracks crashing player
  • Show unavailable message in place of shouts by deleted users
Last week, we also made replying and voting on shouts available to all users. Enjoy.

Right now, we're doing some more work on shout notifications, improving the experience around large conversations, and sorting shouts by popularity.

Cheers,
James

No one wants last.fm sessions. No one watches your youtube channel, why do you want to link to this so prominently in the banner? Videos 4 months old have 1000 views. I have vaporwave tracks with more youtube views.

Listen to everyone: fix your site. God damn.

Now I see why I suddenly decided to stop scrobbling and put my account on a hiatus two days ago. It was precognition!

You want people to subscribe to this website and improve the resources that you desperately need to avoid barraging us with lame ads featuring justin bieber?  Try actually implementing fixes that we've asked for repeatedly - and bothered waiting around this long to see if they'd ever come back!

Hi Giannis,

"is there any possibility for re - introducing latest new artist listened ?"

I'm not totally sure what you mean, can you elaborate a bit please? You want somewhere to list new additions to your library, is that right? (like on the old homepage)

Hi Jon,
yes thats right,
somewhere to list new additions to my library
Just to explain it
There was a feature mentioning the latest new artist added to my library ,i  m not refering to any new track addition by artist already listened in the past, only the newest artist's name along with its icon.
Yes this feature was desplayed on the old homepage near the recommendations on the right side if i m not mistaken and it listed the 4 or 6 (i dont remember) latest new artists added to my library.
when for example it was the 1st time that i listened to a new artist.. then, in my homepage this new artist was displayed there through this tool "Latest new artist added to my library" ,

A very useful feature hoping you re-introduce it.

An entire month for you to deliver basically nothing plus a feature that nobody asked for.
I don't have any feelings about the carousel. I don't hate it. But it's an extra little thing I would expect you to be adding when the site is almost done. But it isn't. There are bigger things we've been waiting a year for. And we still have no information about those. Thanks guys.

so, no improvements to EVENTS (still "half-activated" and not useful since months), groups, tags, about me, neighbours, library etc...
instead, we have little fixes on the shouts, a feature that no one will use before you BRING BACK the old site and bring back the people on the site.
oh, and a footer full of banners which I didn't see at all thanks to Adblock (I just had to deactivate it for a moment to see what all the people on this thread were talking about).
ok, let's probably see in September with some other useless fixes?

Sorry you feel this way still, which specific improvements are you looking for with events?

Hi Jon,

While I can't speak for dis0rder, the biggest thing that I'm looking to see from events is the ability to create new venues and search events by venue. We've had quite a few new theaters open in my area that I cannot keep up to date with events because I cannot create them. You and the other devs have mentioned in the past that it's planned, but is has no timetable for prioritization.

In terms of priority, I know that events is one of my most frequently used features on the site, much more so than shouts. I understand that finishing additional shout features is the topic of development at the moment, but I figured I'd chime in that the above is at the top of my "feature request" list. Cheers!

Agreed with OP, we need to make new venues. I've come across tons of events listed without a venue. That's not useful at all. I bet there's also a ton of events that havent been created cause the venue doesnt exist. So yes, events is "half activated" indeed.

Dear Jon, please allow me to refresh your memory with some improvements for the Events functionality. Everyone is free to contribute with more, I am sure I have missed some.

  • Ability to search by Country. It is impossible for example to see all the events in Greece.
  • Add new venue
  • Search by venue
  • Add event from the venue page
  • Flag for duplicate venues and events
  • Search for venues
  • See who is attending
  • See who is interesting
  • Write a review for an event
  • Upload photos from an event
  • Recent user activity around the event
  • Search for festivals
  • Ability to delete an artist from an event

adding to the call to see who is attending events - that's a major way we used to meet other last.fm users at shows and connect on their libraries!  WHY did that go away??

1. there aren't even notifications on the page for likes and replies? (not to mention emails).
2. there should be a way to see who liked the post. it just shows a number which toggles your own like/dislike.

Notifications (including who liked your post) are in development now.  I'm not sure if a public list of users that liked a given shout is something we should do.

What a Sprint....I visit this community page quite often. I see a lot of comments from users that want some features back...I cannot recall any post about restyling the footer...How on earth did you come up with this thought? How can you be so unrespectful to the users? Why don't you put some effort to the things the users ask about?

The only one good thing from this update was the reduced black gradient on artist/album thumbnail image.

Well, that's it. It looks so much better than the first before.

I mean that beta before the current beta - You know, when we first saw the new thing, and thought "Eww, okay. Could be kinda neat but needs lots of work. Glad there's a Feedback button, I'm gonna use that now".
Just before they went live with the exact same thing the next day or so.

I wonder what the plans are for the anniversary. Maybe new avatars for staff here: "100 Billion tickets still on the to do list"

Okay so just as we speak the web player (Spotify) is skipping every second song saying it is unavailable. So that still exists.

Just like the other problem i mentioned two months ago where when i set the web player to play stuff from youtube it doesn't play the video i set it to.

I can't believe it's been an entire year since this beta that nobody wanted was forced upon us and we're STILL asking for the same things and you're STILL ignoring us and STILL making "improvements" that nobody wants. It's baffling!

This is a really interesting comment. I mean, whenever there is a change to a website – any website – there is an outcry from the users. But that usually dies down after a few weeks. Here on LFM it's actually been an entire year, and the complaints still are not going away. I'm thinking that's more than the usual "i simply hate change" rant...

That's because it isn't a change. It is more like an amputation of hands and feets and nobody knows when the patient will get them back.
So vote for an open working schedule where the user can participate. That is the least to show the users some respect.

Just to echo some of these sentiments...

1. Why are you pushing random music on us through a footer? I can just click on the home button and see a bunch of relevant music that is tailored to me based on my tastes. Much more useful.

2. If you are going to push random music on us, why have you designed it in the most annoying, obvious and invasive way possible? What reaction did you really expect? Are you surprised?

3. If you design the footer in the most invasive way possible as you did, why not have some blank filler space so the footer is indeed at the 'foot' of the page, rather than sitting directly under everything on every page.

4. Here's the most important point. It's been about a year since the old site was replaced. There are a ton of things missing still. I understand the development staff is like 2 people. Please focus your efforts on restoring all of the sites functionality before you start introducing things like the footer that is hardly useful. If you had a priority list of things to "fix", footer would be #100.

Sure I still use the site, but it's not the same anymore. Everyone left. All the artists pages I used to visit everyday have no new posts. Nobody is creating events, attending them, commenting on them. Basically activity on the site has pretty much vanished. It's really sad man. At a certain point, the developers gotta just say "we were wrong, we did irreparable damage and lost half the community, with each sprint our numbers are going down rather than up, let's just change directions and try to please the remaining fanbase".

Really users? You guys are still responding with elaborate lists of suggestions and feedback??

What actual evidence do you have anyone at Lastfm cares???

Anyone with basic Internet ethics must quit this website. What are you waiting for? Another botched release? Quit now and feel relieved. Organize and enjoy your music.

Does the shouts undergo some very elaborate code when posting them ? :D
Just a few seconds ago I wrote 2 shouts to a "friend" and it took a ridiculous amount of time to finally post them.
Not to mention that each had first an error on posting (blabla... Please try again later -- trying again after a few seconds worked good, but it still is strange that on both I had this error first before succeeding).

There's something between 5 and 10 seconds for the system to finish posting the shout after I click the button "Post shout".
Why it takes that much time ?

Look, I'm sure these articles don't get much traffic but I'm also sure this footer is not going to change this, nor will it catapult your Facebook likes per post into the double digit range.

I am deeply, deeply discouraged. Please, Last.fm. This is not what we want. Get the hint already.

I wasn't planning on making a post for this update, but I feel there's a couple things I would like to comment on anyways.

Regarding to bsg_999's comment about the new reply feature, I feel the same way with him on the whole idea of it. If I left a shout on someone's profile, how am I suppose to even know if said user responds? Do I have to constantly check on a daily basis just to see so? Why not just add it to where we get notifications when users comment on our own profiles instead? Was this really something that was necessary to add? I feel like this was something that was not fully thought out.

Another thing I don't get is, we have users that literally have to make user scripts just to add back missing elements to the site (i.e. friends who listen to, fixing the annoying chucks of white space showing up on everyone's profile, etc). If a user can make a script to add said features back, why is it so hard for you guys to do the same? This alone proves you guys have way more time than you imply you do. If a user can, out of their own personal time and for free, add something back, you guys can too.

I tried so hard to stick on the staff's side since the beginning despite my own disappointment, but since so much is still missing after almost an entire year of switching to the new site, it's very difficult to remain faithful in your future actions.

I literally don't know anything about coding, and even I feel I can add back these older features, in a quicker manner, than you guys. I was hoping most things would have been back by the summertime, but I guess that alone was asking for too much.

That just about sums up exactly how I feel. I've gone out of my way in the past to defend or to try and justify their actions. For what? Now a year into the beta and we've gone nowhere relative to everything that we lost. Progress is still just as slow. Communication is still near none existent. Staff are still cherry picking the posts they reply to and ignoring the real issues. Feedback is clearly still being ignored.

I could continue. I actually wanted to write about a similar story involving one of my favourite game developers whose actions outraged and alienated their community - but they managed to turn it around, restore faith and continue development driven by community feedback... But I feel like there's just no point.

I guess I just wanted to believe things would get better. Maybe I'm just naive. Restoring some features shouldn't be such a monumental task, should it? It's not like we're trying to solve world hunger here. It sounded so possible...

I could still Scrobble, expand my music collection, talk and share music daily with friends over Last.fm. I guess I convinced myself it was all fine. Seems I was living in a dreamworld  :)

So they waited almost a whole month just to release an update for more advertisement? And some useless feature about leaving shouts to someone? Almost a year and still no significant social updates? I feel fucking gutted at this point. I have tried to be optimistic about this whole new idea, but after a year of really nothing I quit lastfm for good. I also would like to delete my account for good not deactivate it.

As others have said, I've tried to be respectful despite my disappointment with the slow progress till now. I thought many things that users were yelling at staff were incredibly rude and I understood that they wouldn't exactly be thrilled to scroll through dozens of offensive posts.

But at this point, after a year of nothing, I'm no longer just disappointed with the slow progress and lack of communication, I'm mad. I check these posts very regularly and I've seen so many people put time and effort into giving really extensive feedback and also simple questions about estimated dates - all of which have either been completely ignored or shook off with a half-assed answer.

Your users who still haven't given up on this place are trying to be helpful and at this point it feels like you're just laughing at us with these basic, barely noticeable updates once a month!

Sticking to shouts... Has anyone else noticed those "This shout is unavailable" notes on artist pages?  I see it on several artist pages.  The below example comes from the God Is An Astronaut page:

Yeah, it's the newest 'bugfix'. Those are the shouts made by people who have deleted their profiles.

(I guess our reaction should be: WOW, HOW EXCITING, NOW I KNOW THAT SOME PERSON THAT NO LONGER EXISTS HAD SOMETHING TO SAY, BUT I WILL NEVER KNOW WHAT THEY ACTUALLY SAID, BUT AT LEAST I CAN DIE IN PEACE KNOWING THAT THERE USED TO BE A SHOUT HERE! HOW INNOVATIVE AND CLEVER!).

A deleted person was indeed my first and most obvious thought, but in LFM's current state anything is possible.  It was just the amount of such notifications that caught my attention.  Seriously the worst 'update' in a long time.

This conversation is no longer open for comments or replies.
