Website update - 23rd March

  • Announcement
  • Updated 4 years ago
Hey Everyone!

Today we released Sprint 180. Here's the visible stuff that made it through:

Features
  • Show playing video in-place on track pages
Bugfixes
  • Stop wiki pages redirecting on 'no redirect' artists
Sprint 181 will include the recent tracks update and event fixes that were carried over from 180. Catalogue work is moving to internal beta this week, an opt-in subscriber beta should follow soon.

Cheers,
Team Last.fm

what to do you mean by internal beta / opt-in subscriber beta? Will we be able to test it before it gets published?

I used to be a dedicated subscriber but not anymore. Nothing could make me pay for using LFM anymore.

James Scott -

I guess just for clarity then: the new catalog is something that was not something that was part of the development plan for this past beta (i.e. the April 2015 beta), or was it?

I'm going to ask a question that is going to sound smarmy as hell.  I'm not sure how to ask this without sounding like a complete jerk, but I am honestly just in a state of confusion and really want to have a better understanding of what I should be expecting.  So here goes:

To the Last.fm development group, just what does the word beta mean?

Understand that I ask this with complete sincerity.  I understand that beta is a squishy word, and the software development industry has kinda helped to make sure those words remain vague and squishy, but you know as well as I do that most people who use and/or write software have some concept of what constitutes beta in their noggin.

I am just afraid that the discrepancy between what the Last.fm dev team considers as beta and what a lot of users consider as beta is wide enough wherein everyone's expectations are miscalibrated and all we end up with is a bunch of pissed of users yelling at development and a bunch of overworked developers getting tired of hearing users bitch.  Understand that, from where I'm sitting, that looks to be exactly the case regarding the April and August beta launches.

Again, I don't mean to sound like a jerk.  I guess...from one technical developer to another - you can at least understand where the frustration and where some of the vitriol is coming from, right?

Instead of just poo-slinging at the devs who, I'm sure, are working hard trying to turn this rather large ship in the right direction, I'll chime in and say that I'm really looking forward to the catalog improvements. It's always been one of my biggest pet peeves with this site as a whole, and the prospect of it being addressed (at least partially) is a huge step in my book.

And again for the past 55 minutes the recent tracks section on my profile page is not being updated. Scrobbling from Spotify and WMP.  With WMP scrobbling the LFM scrobble software recognizes the tracks, but no submission to profile yet.

*Clueless* Well, they suddenly appeared again (after a good number of page refreshes).  I thought the staff repaired it very quickly this time. Sadly enough the recent played is starting to act very unstable again right now, i.e. a sudden refresh made the scrobbles from the past 2 hours disappear again, but after another refresh all returned to normal.  A simple refresh helps sometimes, but not always. I'm very sorry for this unsatisfactory answer, but if it's comforting you, in the end no scrobbles were lost.

The "ship."

The last 100 days;

Website update after one month; mid-Dec. “Ship” took off for a month cruise.

New Year (2016) ship docks - 15 & 27th of January updates "The first releases’ of the year

“It’s a fairly small one because of the Christmas break; Parts 1 & 2.”

Website update - 25th February (nothing to see here).

Website update - 9th March: Preparation for the catalogue work (Apologies for the recent stability issues).

Last week part 2 of parts 1 & 2 continued.

That is hard at work not making item/issues work?

Please one of you who claims “I know how it is (I’m a developer)” is the catalogue an all-purpose fix all?

I really would like this to work, but 'nothing' done or due to the lack of communication makes me wonder.

* sorry if i covered comments.

a related problem with a closed beta, I ended my subscription in June 2015, but I am still listed as a subscriber. I appreciate the subscriber benefits (exclusive "subscriber" text next to my username) but you should figure out who the 20 real subscribers left actually are.

Sorry about this. We're also working on this at the moment. It's kinda boring and there's nothing user-facing yet, so I'm not including it in our public sprint notes.

i think a lot more people would subscribe if the ability to see users who viewed their profile was brought back. which i suppose is definitely not a priority for last.fm, but it could bring revenue.

well virtually everyone subscribed for that feature, and i think it would be wise to work on restoring it. there are basically no subscriber features which make it appealing for the majority of users to subscribe. another thing is while this is happening, loyal users are becoming overwhelmingly jaded with the site (these updates are ridiculously disappointing and nonsensical given how long time ago beta was introduced, and how a better idea was surely not introducing it while fundamental features are missing), and after frustration, comes loss of interest. it is important is to remember that a large number of users did not just use last.fm merely for the charts but for social features such as groups, shouting (notifications are still missing), follower notifications, neighbours and so on. these features are yet to return (at least in the state of their full functionality).

You're working on it? I'm no developer, but really.. how hard could it be? Have any one of you ever worked on a site before or is this all just trial and error? It seems like the latter to me.

mine works for some songs and not for others, randomly.  Listen to an album and only a fraction of the songs are scrobbled to lastfm.  The all scrobble to librefm without error.

I love how it's gotten to the point now where I'm not even surprised anymore to see the sparingly detailed progress made throughout each sprint update.

Was hoping by now song filters would be done with, along with certain album corrections not working properly as well, (and other obvious things) but I guess that's what I get for making expectations.

really baffling how these seemingly large projects are prioritized above very simple fixes to restore the original site, such as shoutbox/new follower email notifications, friends listening now, sidebar bbcode, timezones. goddamn timezones there are libraries in every platform which correctly handle this for you.

I think if I was paying £1500 a month for top tier access to a music metadata API, getting it integrated again would be my top priority too!  :-/

@mo  Glad you agree with me  ;-)  I'm sure people will be a lot happier when the catalogue stuff is finished and 7 months of missing albums appear on the site.

Looking forward to seeing the new Bieber album on here :-P

My response was a bit tongue in cheek! We all have our own things we think should be priority. I'm still waiting for the API to be fixed - when they got rid of Events and broke all their old image links, I had to write code to pull data from 4 separate services to replace what I used to get from Last.fm :-(  They've not even hinted when/if that's being looked at.

Anyways, let's not argue. Whenever I talk to you guys the thread seems to get locked. :-S

In sum (@ Chris), there is no order here to be seen in the project goals/steps and like that forum you were in the other day, the person with the champ tag says "why fix something that is fixed." So Twinkies is mad, I am huh? Good thing it is not broken lol.

The catalogue; if it was like the one existed and user friendly as well I am for it 100%, but they need to finish incomplete projects as this may take a very long time (maybe not?), and those uncompleted mini-projects will turn into scratch, start over. That is sloppy.

So that my 23 cents worth (Friction-Buster), and I thank you for being a help other day.

I remember people half year ago, saying "everything will be good, don't cry people, last.fm is responsible site, this problems with beta will end soon"... hellyeah, nice joke.

I recommend some idea, maybe you will like it: for no reason, write music recommendations in you comments sometimes, huh? We all love music at last. So there is mine: The Devil & The Universe (dark/ritual ambient mixed with darkwave)

Another useless update. Still no email notifications, no personal tags, no alphabetic order for artists in a library, nothing useful. And - is it a joke or what? "Yo dawg! We heard that you don't like our beta, so we put a subscriber beta in our beta so you can beta-test while you beta-test".

Isn't it more important to do the major things first....things from the old site that you were promising to return, like Neighbours or to make Recommendations fully functional (not this mini version)
Or please just return to the old engine...make some redisign if you want it so much, but don't change the engine if you don't have enough resources to do the new one..at this rate of fixes it will be really like forever.

We already had a catalogue, we had a lot of things - what happened to them? Lame excuses is what we get, and this notion of just starting to work on it, it is what 4-5 months old:"Transferring" from Musicbrainz and staff should be embarrassed for this mess and not being honest.

lastfm should have given us bit of notice, all we got was

"Our engineers are continuing to investigate the ongoing issue with our API system which has been affecting both scrobbling and other API services this week (e.g. authentication, account creation).  We apologise for any disruption caused during these outages, we are working alongside CBSi's engineering team to get these problems resolved as soon as possible.

Posted about 13 days ago by jon"

so does this mean lastfm isn't going to work on internet explorer or do we have to switch to google chrome?. Youtube seems to only work on google chrome.

For the record I don't want to use spotify, so recomeneding me to switch to user which in my opinion wouldn't know much of the bands I listen to is like asking a dog to speak English or french

Not at all (heroin & Xanax helps with my rage). I learn something new every day here, Wednesday the use of a grammar period (for special me) as a statement is improper “forum” language (by “Moderator Jon” (lingo used from getsat spam-letter)) well in this forum at least and is off the extremely ambiguous topic of a double beta (a.k.a. A-007).

I do have question though whether off topic or not – how people are subscribers? Copyright laws are coming into play as I write this and end it with a . ($) .

What about neighbors? this was the single most important feature of Last.fm, apart from scrobbling...
If it'd be me, I would prioritize the core functionality - social features being one - over other things.

I think something in the new update potentially breaks Google Chrome. Since two days ago, every time I visit any Last.fm page, my browser freezes and then goes to a partially blank window. I have made no other changes on my computer whatsoever.

Not only Google Chrome. My Mozilla-based Pale Moon also freezes sometimes, and then say something about a script that is not respond and ask me if I want to wait or terminate it. The script is google.com/js/bg/fBnyGA8Aionz5086-mElmoOSPUuyQ1M9Un647_EjucU.js

Lastfm just scrobbles one song on windows and they seem to be the same one over and over again, or if you are lucky a different song but it's by the same artist

I congratulate you guys on fixing whatever the heck happened yesterday...
And thank you for adding links to artist's pages for our library info on that artist, better late than never.
Still waiting on the 8 other things on my "must-have" list to come back that I mentioned in the previous sprint.
But! I have yet another thing to add to the list:
  • What gives with the albums featuring various artists and how it's displayed on my profile? If I listen to 10 different artists on the same album and it's a top album on my profile, it is listed as an album by the most recent artist, not "various artists"... as such, I click the link and the page gives me an error that I never listened to the album by that artist. Well, no shit, because it's in my account under various artists. Seems like some display issue. I'll give you an example:
As you can see, this is the exact same album...
