Hello friends,

We've just released the following:

Features
  • Switch to Artist - Track order everywhere (except for album track lists)
  • Reintroduce the taste-o-meter to profile pages
  • Simplified password reset form
Bugfixes
  • Album art on album pages is no longer circular on mobile (whoops)
  • Fix header metadata truncation
  • Fix issue where logout link was obscured on mobile
  • Load JavaScript quicker
  • Fix event date ordering on /events
  • Fix module teardown memory leak
We also did some work on wikis and events but that's not quite ready for release yet. The next update will be in about 2 weeks time.

Cheers,
Team Last.fm

Yeah, sorry - we missed translation for that string. We thought it best to hide it for non-en rather than hold up the release. It'll be in all languages with the next update.

Yeah, okay, but the whole site sucks now.  I mean, it looks like an advertisement for some new kind of vacuum cleaner, or something like that.  And I don't see how you can begin to fix it.  It's rubbish, from top to bottom.

With the new site we changed how songs were displayed in lists. Changing it back was one of the most requested features. See https://getsatisfaction.com/lastfm/topics/new-website-okay-thats-fine-but-song-title-artist-has-to-g...

hahaha! i didn't notice the change back to artist then track. That isn't say however that it wasn't a change worth making because i and a lot of people definitely noticed the change to track title followed by artist!

Okay.  The 3 new features are a step into the good direction and some of the major remarks have been tackled.  Glad to see that one of the white spaces has been filled now (taste-o-meter). Looking forward to the next update already.  I have a little more hope now.

"operant conditioning" perhaps is more proper, my fault - it consists of positive reinforcement & negative reinforcement present in controlled environment - actually I was finding irony in the dog image below e.g. - classical conditioning in this Industrial Psycho-Game; however, "drama" - well that is simply/typically usually represented in a fictional performance.

I would define it as surreal humor in this “name throwing” contest --- that would be you and "J", although I tend to agree with their stance over yours, their abruptness has negative consequences, etc. (this appears to have happened).

"Queen," never really thought above the above as drama, perhaps now - no more than an insult from you, you seem to be simple enough to lend out 10 Euros, accept a story, get one dollar back and are happy – I find that sad, yet it part of a functional norm; that is, for example, basic Machiavellian human resources management.

If you think this is "drama" that is your right to do so, just look in the mirror when you do next time.

This is good. But when will the customizable charts for artists, albums, tracks return? It would be good to also bring back the library view to the profile. The actual library itself is also in desperate need of better navigation options. Got anything to say about these problems?

On the old site, when I clicked an artist in the Taste-o-Meter, I got to a page where I could see what exactly that user had scrobbled of said artist in a certain timeframe. This was fun an useful as you could see what their favorite album was, for example. Now it just brings me to the artist page. Will that function be back?

"I'm being ignorant for pointing out a fact?" - What "fact" are you talking about? That we users who used Last.fm for event organization were doing it wrong or were only superficially interested in visiting gigs? That's rubbish and I've already explained why. You still haven't answered what your better solution would be. Checking all the venues and all the band sites all the time to make sure you don't miss something? That seems just really inefficient to me.

Thing is, the way Last.fm did events worked for me. That right there's a fact. I used it and I relied on it. There was nothing wrong with it. It's not there anymore for no good reason at all, so I think it's fine to complain and wish it back as soon as possible.

I have things called calendars and diaries. I find them quite useful for when I wish to find out what I'm supposed to do on any given day. It's great that LAst FM provided this FREE service but it's ludicrous to rely on it as your own personal secretary. I mean, surely you have events in your life that are not music related. Maybe you use some other FREE service for these on the Internet. If so, wouldn't it be more sensible to have them all in one place?

It's not about simply keeping those events in a calendar, I can do that just fine, it's about finding out about various events in the first place. Last.fm was like an interactive event manager that knew what I liked based on my scrobbling and helped me discover stuff I would've missed otherwise.
And I can't shake the feeling that even when events do come back, they find some way to make them not as useful as they used to be.

3 days ago: "This is absolutely not acceptable for a paid service"

1 day ago: "If any of you pay for this, you should be ashamed."

Make your mind up, Jordan. Otherwise people might think your moaning about how the free website isn't bending over backwards to give you exactly what you want is just you acting like an entitled child.

But could you, please, tell us what to expect, what's coming with the next big update?

Everyone's impatient to see their favorite features reintroduced and it'd be nice to know all the known ETAs, at least.

Even though Jordan's abusive messages were uncalled for, he was still right about the website. Are you people already forgetting what a fiasco this new website is after they release one lousy update? Regardless of what you personally think, objectively speaking the way they handled the release of their new website is laughable and something you might expect from a couple of teenagers running a website from their basement, not a multimillion dollar brand endorsed by CBS Interactive.

Dozens of bugs, most of core features not working or removed altogether and above all, incompetent developers. It's just terrible, plain and simple.

Remember, the BETA was running for half a year, during which the development team was given countless suggestions and feedback day in day out by the community, and everything was ignored.

Now, 6 weeks after they released a thoroughly unfinished website, they start fixing bugs which were supposed to be handled during the BETA period and you guys are satisfied with it?

Are we entitled to demand more? Maybe, but many people here including myself were subscribers for a number of years, even after the radio was removed and there was absolutely fuck all reason to support the site anymore, but we did anyway. It's only fair to expect that when the website you support releases an update, it's an improvement, not a massive downgrade.

Look, it's great that they're at least doing something about the website, but at the same time they should be called out repeatedly for this mess. They fucked up big time and they should carry the blame.

I'm not sure that throwing constant negativity at the devs (because, let's be honest, it's only them and the community team who will be reading this) is particularly constructive, when it will almost definitely have been a business decision to release when they did.

Life's to short to hold a grudge. And I honestly don't see what's achieved by complaining constantly at people who aren't at direct fault.  It's akin to shouting at a call centre employee because you don't like the actions of the company they work for.

Well said, Chris. I feel like the majority of us have gone through the process of loss and grief and now we're onto acceptance. We've had our time to express opinions on the new site to the developers, and now we have to look forward into the future. Constant negativity isn't going to get us anywhere now.

The old site isn't coming back, it's gone. But what we can do is try and make the most of what we have now, and continue to provide feedback and ideas for the devs to push forward with the new website in the hopes that we'll end up with something everybody will be happy with.

Well said Chris and James.

@Nico, no one is denying that the roll-out was a fiasco and no one is insisting that we're not legitimately entitled to some negative feelings about it, but whether jordan is "right" or not isn't a factor here. Calling people dicks, tools and boot lickers and repeatedly insisting that they are implicit to everything negative that is happening with Last.fm at the moment for not spewing the same venomous negativity as him is completely uncalled for and unacceptable on a support forum where users are obligated to at least try to act like adults. I've made some negative posts myself in the past and I'll acknowledge them for what they are, but I've gotten over it and I've moved on. Time for the rest of us to do the same.

I honestly believe that there would be less hostility if THE LAST.FM STAFF HAD MORE VISIBILITY HERE.

I mean it.  James Scott, this update is great and all, but could you maybe light a fire under someone who has some control/responsibility regarding the API to, well, *SAY SOMETHING TO THE UNINFORMED USERBASE* of the APIs?

It's gone beyond deafening silence.  It's starting to get *insulting*.

I get that negativity is uncalled for, but there are other forms of negativity beyond actively calling people dicks.  Like just not acknowledging the other people.  That's a pretty dickish move.

Any chance we can have a Library Layout that was similar to what we use to have?  The new one is horrible.  There is so much wasted space now.  I use to enjoy scrolling through the pages and seeing all the artists fill up the screen.  please bring it back.

Hmm, with respect, James Scott, your linked comment may be positive but it is extremely vague since LogainTB asked you about several things and you've basically just said "we're working on stuff - hope you'll like it".

My biggest gripe with this redesign is the new library, which is incredibly disappointing and a step backward when compared to what preceded it - at least in my opinion.

I sincerely hope you undo the library redesign and go back to something at least passingly resembling the previous version - basically it needs to be more compact with less wasted space and bigger pictures on every level of the library.

@ Alin this is a matter of taste, I prefer not seeing the words Taste-O-Meter that was the cheesey part.  As far as the function:I use it for percentage function, not artist.  As it was, I never knew if the meter was detecting long term taste or more recent taste of a user.

Well, this update it's a step in the right direction i think, i kinda like the taste-o-meter (still, it should have 5 artists instead of just 3). Artist - Track order is just logical and I don't really care about simplified password reset form.
There is still much to do: About Me with html/bbcode, more detailed charts on profile page (with top 50 artist and tracks and 8 pictures instead of 5), image voting and upload, a better library (the old one was perfect), average tracks scrobbled per day and many other features. Something has to be done with that awful header and there is the big problem with wrong artist redirects, which must be fixed ASAP. For now it's ok i guess, but i hope the next updates will be more substantial.

I like the header. I like how it changes according to how often I've listened to a track. My only beef with it - and I must stress that this beef is minor - is that it's too dark. When I click on my profile, the proper colours of the cropped photo come up for about half a second before reverting to its darkened state. I just think that the header would look a lot better if its photo was more natural.

What's up with the header when you view your own Artists and Albums library? It's just a big black bar that takes up way too much space. Shouldn't it be the same header as on our main profile page?

"Switch to Artist - Track order everywhere (except for album track lists)" THANK YOU

"Reintroduce the taste-o-meter to profile pages" THANK YOU Looks good. I like the round meter, it's the one place where circular avatars actually look good and I like that it shows an actual percentage when you hover over it (which I believe was a subscriber-only feature previously). One thing though, as others have mentioned, the previous taste-o-meter had more artists (actually it seemed to vary, anywhere from 0-5 artists depending on how many artists it could match), is it possible to have more artists featured in a future update?

"Fix header metadata truncation" What does this mean? It doesn't refer to long artist names getting cut off in the header of their artist pages does it? Because they're still getting cut off.

"Load JavaScript quicker" Does this take care of the problem where, for example you're in your library and you click "go to artist page" or you're in an artist page and you click the link to add tags and the URL in your address bar changes but you get the spinning wheel of death on the top right of the page and it doesn't change?
