Website update - 27th January

  • 33
  • Announcement
  • Updated 3 years ago
Morning,

We've just released Sprint 176. Here are the highlights:

Features
Bugfixes
  • Show better album art in recent tracks lists
  • Fix issue with some users not seeing their correct email address
  • Fix issue where screen readers weren't being updated at page load
The biggest bit of work going on right now involves making improvements to the catalogue. This will run for a few sprints and will focus on cleaning up existing data and having recent releases better represented. It will also lay the foundations for more interesting improvements. We'll update you once this starts to roll out.

While this goes on we'll also be looking at other bug fixes and smaller features which will be released in two weeks time.

Cheers,
James

I have the same issue, http://www.last.fm/user/reckoner07/library/music/Sigur+Rós I have different scrobbles for the same album(Takk...). If there's a hidden character to one of those album, is it possible to redirect the scrobbles to only a single album?

Grzegorz, it's the layers thing then.

Lando, the ellipsis at the end is different. Open them both in separate tabs and switch back and forth while looking at the address bar, you will see the ellipsis change in size.

Dunno about redirecting any time soon but I'd just fix the tags locally, delete the wrong ones, and rescrobble them. Are they local or are you streaming them?

Oh yeah. You're right. I'd already fixed the tags. I'm scrobbling them locally. Is there any possible way to suggest a correction for that album?

There was on the old site (having the suggestions actually enacted was a different story, there had to be enough votes or something) but as far as I know not on the beta.

The music landing page is pretty useless, it shows Justine Bieber and David Bowie on top, so nothing helping me to discover new music.

When will it be possible to add new event venues?

To be fair, it's just showing the top tracks and artists. It's not last.fm's fault so many people have terrible taste  ;-)

it's completely useless, until they add the possibility to choose the tag you're interested in an then get shown the "popular at the moment" thing...

btw... tags library? any news?

Doesn't matter what is on the top-list. I would just expect more data and stats about listening habits of last.fm users, any kind of insight better than just "top artists"... Considering there's 14 years worth of scrobbles from many milions of users...

I would actually like to be able to see what's beyond these 25 popular artists. You know, like we used to do.

(I'm super happy this page got the update, tho!)

On the music page (http://www.last.fm/music) - is that personalized? An obscure song I favourited a day or so back with only a handful of listeners ever is in the top 10!

Sadly, yes.

Rhianna, Bieber, Rhianna, Bieber. Then some respite with Adele.

I've not really paid much attention to top tracks to be honest. Mostly been looking at loved tracks.

Looking forward to the catalogue corrections which may clear up some long-term issues at last. ;-)

The images on the new overview pages are still sorted by votes, I guess? Maybe showing the number of positive and negative votes in a popup info on the overview page would help, and other sorting methods like date of upload would make sense as well. Mods cannot delete them from the overview, might be quicker than having to open each one first.

thanx for the update and looking forward to the catalogue corrections, is there any way the community will get to get some kind of involvement in that?

Further, I don't know if this connected to today's update but the site seems to be twice as slow as normal, specially when hitting the EVENTS (main) button and stats pages.

We'll look at what tools we require and where the community can get involved fairly soon.

Thanks for the heads up re site speed. We're looking at this now.

As far as I know Last.fm still imports data from MusicBrainz so it may be an idea to add missing releases there. Especially for more obscure artists that aren't on the major digital sites (Spotify, iTunes et.c.).

Hello
What is so difficult to reinstate the tags, or the playlist. That are important tools.
Do you really think that they are not? What keeps you from to do this?
I can recommend a song to holy faithbook or shitty twister but not to a friend on last fm.
Is this so difficult to implement? I can' believe this.
Have fun with your pictures.
And please:
Give an answer with a date.

Slowly, slowly but last.fm is getting back on it's legs

Can anyone tell me how to correct artist to merge them like f.e. I'd like to vote to merge "V I S" with "Vis" or to make "Oranges" to have a page separate from "Oranges & Lemons", is this possible as it's used to or it's just not implemented yet?

This isn't possible right now. Catalogue improvments should take care of some of this, but we'll also be looking at what tools we need to give to users at the same time.

I mentioned the bug concerning loving tracks last sprint. Is it being worked on, or is it far down in the pile of things to do?

He might refer to the bug that a song temporarily disappears from your recent tracks if you have just loved it. As far as I remember, there already is a ticket for that. Furthermore the loved track reappears after the next scrobble.

^That's the one, I've added James to the ticket, it's with a different team though (back end, not front end issue). They're looking into it, and I'm waiting to hear back on the result.

Asstro, if you follow this thread, you'll get a notification when the issue is fixed.

That wasn't the issue actually, though I do experience that as well. The bug is simply that the page refreshes after every love-track click, which makes loving tunes take an unnecessary amount of time.

There's an extension for this. It's not perfect and it shouldn't have to take a  third-party to get it done, but I haven't had many problems with it.

Funnily enough, I was just sifting through the code for this.  Was debating whether a "what friends are currently scrobbling" plugin was feasible.

But yeah, I use the plugin @angriestchair mentioned.  Works really well.

Why not include more than 4 artists/albums/tracks options when searching for a name? Can't I search for tags anymore? how about what my friends are listening to? can't I check additional tags for a music/artist? Where is my custom 10 artist playlist (with images)?

I found the recommendations page kinda buggy. For example, I've been recommended Oneohtrix Point Never when i already scrobbled him, but the oddest part is that the rec is based on Jefre Cantu-Ledesma that i scrobbled AFTER scrobbling OPN. I also noticed the recommendations are based on just a fraction of the artists i scrobbled.

Did you delete your scrobbles for Onehtrix Point Never?

To keep recommendations relevant, we only take your last few months' scrobbles into account.

That's strange. It should only show the similar to an artist message if you have never scrobbled the recommended artist. When you click on Oneohtrix Point Never, does it show how many times have you scrobbled this artist?

Awesome, now what about fixing the album name auto corrector?

Albums (and sometimes songs) under my artist pages aren't grouped together anymore, and some of the songs are showing up as scrobbled under certain pages:

http://puu.sh/mLDfW.png
http://puu.sh/mLDgz.png
http://puu.sh/mLDiY.jpg
http://puu.sh/mLDhS.jpg
http://puu.sh/mLDls.jpg
http://puu.sh/mLDlC.jpg

Note: It doesn't do this with every song that was auto corrected in my library, only certain/random ones.

It should be addressed as part of the ongoing catalogue work but it will take few sprints.

Can you make it clear and give a final answer; are we bound to a Catalogue and uploading low quality jpg.photos - regardless of image resolution, it converts down? An example of my recent plays;

+ Additionally, I can load a cover and it is not shown in tracks; Tangerine Dream is well known, has large cover library, and even that draws a blank?

There's something different with charts when playcount are tied. It's sorting by song name now, why? It used to be much better with the older "random" algorithm. Is it a bug?

I don't have any examples, but I understand what he's saying. He's saying that when for example, two artists have the same number of plays, let's say "Adele" and "David Bowie", Adele comes first because her name begins with A, before it used to be "random" (although I think the algorithm was "first scrobbled onto the lastfm database"). I thought no one noticed this but me lol

I see. It's probably due to the fact that we have completely rebuilt the backend and this particular behaviour is just a property of that. I don't think it's a bug.

No, no, not like that.
Look at your library at some certain artist; scroll to pages where you most likely have more than one song with the same amount of scrobbles (lets say the page where you have several songs with 2 scrobbles). There, you see the songs are listed in strict alphabetical order. @Fernades said that before, those songs were in some sort of random order (if you refresh that page several times, maybe the songs that had the same number of scrobbles  were even in a changed order, at each refresh).

I haven't noticed this before, so I can't confirm this was different before this update.
But now things are like that :-)

[edit] Ah, OK, this also goes for library of artists as well: artists that have the same amount of scrobbles seem now to be listed alphabetical, as well.

The recent tracks fix is great, thanks.
But i'm wondering if the "grid library" it's on your priorities, because someone said once that it was planned, but... :/

Also, journals and about me with BBCode 200+ characters, any plans? (no one ever answered about the latter tho)

And for about me / bbcode: https://getsatisfaction.com/lastfm/topics/website-update-27th-january?topic-reply-list%5Bsettings%5D...

I think the implication is "Not currently planned, but trying to convince the relevant people it's a good idea".   Otherwise, I'm not sure where else you'd put images, tag clouds, etc if not in your about me.

Yes, he says nothing directly about the coming of the about me section... though the third parties app would only come back if they bring back the about me lol
anyway, that's sad because it was one of the most important and what gave to each profile a "personality" :/ I kept many things there, well... let's hope

Will community features like "what are our friends currently listening to" on the dashboard ever come back? I'm miss the old last.fm so much.
And I miss my 3rd party statistics, like the tag-cloud in my profile. When will we be able to improve our profiles again? Currently it's not even possible to link to your own homepage. Can't be that hard to restore such little features?
