Website update - 27th January

  • 33
  • Announcement
  • Updated 3 years ago
Morning,

We've just released Sprint 176. Here are the highlights:

Features
Bugfixes
  • Show better album art in recent tracks lists
  • Fix issue with some users not seeing their correct email address
  • Fix issue where screen readers weren't being updated at page load
The biggest bit of work going on right now involves making improvements to the catalogue. This will run for a few sprints and will focus on cleaning up existing data and having recent releases better represented. It will also lay the foundations for more interesting improvements. We'll update you once this starts to roll out.

While this goes on we'll also be looking at other bug fixes and smaller features which will be released in two weeks time.

Cheers,
James

Something I noticed about the new scrobble listing: my scrobbles for the group SAHA are now shown correctly (& with artwork), whereas in the rest of my library, they're incorrectly "corrected" to Sasha. Which view has the bug? Or are both as intended?

I'm getting some WEIRD incorrect album art showing up on the recent tracks, stuff that is NOWHERE near the correct album photo, it's not even the right artist or an album I've seen before. But in my library it's showing up correctly?

If you click into the song with the missing art , the album saved against those songs links to here:

http://www.last.fm/music/The+Brains/Hell+N%27+Back+-+No+Brain,+No+P

I had a quick check, and it looks like those songs are on an album called Hell and Back, which doesn't match with that link.  So because the songs are associated with the wrong album name, last.fm doesn't know what art to show.

If these songs are all on your PC, it might be worth checking the ID3 tags to make sure the album field is right.

If they're definitely right at your end then yeah, last.fm have messed up the scrobble somehow.

Thanks, I had some problems with tags. It's just worked fine somehow before the last update.

Figured it was worth checking at your end first. A few people seem to be having similar issues, where it looks like it's scrobbled with the wrong tags but they're saying it's right at their end.

Either way, it seems like it's better than it was before. Still not perfect though, clearly. :-P

You can always add the artwork for that album, even if it is the wrong one. That should solve your issue.

The staff's priority # 1 should be to fix the artwork in all spaces(recently played, library
, loved songs) to be more complete. When I play random playlists only 60% of th artwork appears & it don ́t exist at all in loved songs.

From the OP:  "The biggest bit of work going on right now involves making improvements to the catalogue. This will run for a few sprints"

Some discussion on art now showing in the library: https://getsatisfaction.com/lastfm/topics/website-update-27th-january?topic-reply-list%5Bsettings%5D...

It sounds like that's what they're working on now.

Will community features like "what are our friends currently listening to" on the dashboard ever come back? I'm miss the old last.fm so much.
And I miss my 3rd party statistics, like the tag-cloud in my profile. When will we be able to improve our profiles again? Currently it's not even possible to link to your own homepage. Can't be that hard to restore such little features?
common guy, it's been half a year now and last.fm is still half dead!

Nice update !
But guys, Please, do you consider bringing back the Real - time auto scrobbling data ?
I honestly fed up το constantly refreshing up my page...
button "F5" and "Overwiew" became a nightmare - this process at least (for me) is just  annoying.. and in a way, disrupts the whole listening experience.

Why isn't the album pages populated properly? It seems that only albums that has been scrobbled for years show up. It's not recent either, it's been goin' on since the re-launch.

And in case any dev's see this, let me redirect you to my answer about the loving tracks bug you seem to have missed: https://getsatisfaction.com/lastfm/topics/website-update-27th-january?topic-reply-list%5Bsettings%5D...

Thanks! :)

Just to pre-empt the likely dev response and save you a few days of back and forth, have you got a link to any examples where albums are missing?

Asstro Mupp, the albums are now orginazed by TOTAL number of scrobbles and so the albums that show at the top are the ones with more overall scrobbles.

Last.fm has been losing users since circa 2009 so the top albums tend to be the ones published before that date.

Contempt: It's not the albums are listed below the top albums, it's that they don't exist at all, unless you go to your own album scrobbles.

Albums released after the site relaunch are likely to be missing. Filling these in is part of the catalogue work that's currently underway.

edit: We've seen the love track bug report and are looking into it. Thanks for reporting.

Asstro Mupp & Contempt; I’d add that after 2010 less mainstream music, yet popular enough to market, the cover art starts to disappear, singles, eps are very limited here and musicbrainz I am not overly impressed with after 2010.

Discogs goes by decade, yet wondering into more obscure material is somewhat limiting in material. In a pinch I have always found the artist’s homepage, Facebook, Music-cloud, even Vkontakte to be decent sites to upload cover art.

The artist’s pages here had been neglected for a good 5 years (minus top billboard charts) before this unfinished beta went live and it really compounds problems.

Are you ever going to fix iPod scrobbling? People have been getting the same error since January 2015 (!), there are countless threads about it and not a single response so far.

@James Scott I would love to get a reply from you on whether last.fm has any plans to again make it possible to view your artist library in alphabetical order, rather than by top plays. I have seen several people raise this question over the last few months with no official response.

Thanks Chris, I actually just managed to find that also and was coming back here to update, but the fact that this was 5 months ago does not really put my mind at ease...

Yeah, there does seem to be a bit of an ever-growing backlog of "planned" features. I think their logic at the moment is to get the site "working" and then start re-adding the useful, nice to have stuff.

Some pages - festivals are a good example - are basically unusable as they are now.

The funny thing...
If you did a diff between "features that pre-beta Last.fm had" and "features that current-beta Last.fm has", I suspect it would look amazingly similar to the backlog of "planned" features.

Just a fascinating observation.

I cannot believe I am really starting to appreciate the surprise live beta dropped on 'us' in mid-august, 2015 -- these 500, 404, 405 errors for 3 days straight because of _________ and ___________[?].

It is a darn good thing that we don’t have the old site in place making matters worse.

You're going to bring back the possibility of removal of the artist from the library and return the our tags?

Blocking a user should IP ban them from viewing your profile, otherwise this feature is useless.

Tom, this wouldn't work. Your profile is public. Randomly banning IPs would affect too many unrelated people.

Next thing you know some visionary will say they can send a person to moon with a Dre Beats headset on singing’ this One Giant Step for Music; face it, this is a place for updates not ideas, which looks like it’s not happening (either way) today?

We'll be looking for feedback on the new catalogue soon -- probably 2-6 weeks, depending on how things go.
