Website update - 27th October

  • 7
  • Announcement
  • Updated 3 years ago
Hey all,

Today we released Sprint 195. This included:

Features
  • "Recommended next" module
A quick way to get a recommendation based on the artist, album, track, or tag that you're viewing
  • Experimental timezone support
You can now set a timezone here: https://www.last.fm/settings/website
As mentioned, this is experimental. It's mostly fine, but some graphs (mostly the activity graph in your library) will look a bit weird. We're working on fixing this but thought you'd rather not wait any longer. Let me know if you see any other problems.
Some of you also noticed that we accidentally turned notifications on earlier. This has moved into the final stages of testing so we hope to turn it on for you all soon. I'll post again when it goes live.

Cheers,
Team Last.fm

Oh, here it is! Good to hear notifications are almost here. Are they going to be handled like private messages (through the site) or as an email, or both? Also, one suggestion: That big red button is unnecessary. It sticks out like a sore thumb. It would look much better without the red background (something I've already done with my Stylish script).

I think your design team should think about changing some things too. The website is becoming extremely messy and cluttered with ads, buttons and features all over the place. There's some odd colour choices too, like why are the library countbars pink? Or why is the "Scrobbling Now" section on profiles yellow?

Anyway. I think the real issue that needs addressing is the ads. They're a big problem.

Notifications will be like private messages to start with. We'd like to do email but we need to be careful so that we don't end up accidentally spamming y'all.

You are spamming us on the music site right now with unwanted ads (very-invasive); "sending unsolicited or undesired electronic messages"  that is the Oxford dictionary primary meaning -- "spamming."

Not to mention it is creating problems with our devices - no we would not want you adding to the problem by " accidentally spamming" us.

It's starting to seem that we care more about the site surviving than the staff does, and they're just riding this out as long as it's possible.

What's the point in even asking at this point? He's going to continue to ignore it like it's nothing, because he's right we're wrong, even though it's A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT IS EFFECTING THE SITE NEGATIVELY.

James Joul said it... i agree. big red button is ugly,

maybe recommendations should be a setting to be switched off in settings?

the design is becoming to complex with still lots of white space all around, that is just crazy, could there be a setting to set the background from white to darkgray or an inverse paperwhite mode, all this white is hurting my eyes late at night.

Experimental timezone support, You can now set a timezone here : in setting a location the graph does not work anymore nothing visible on  w10 in Opera

I believe that their mission is to pull as many members of their site, and when they do, this domain will either close or will sell it to someone.

Something like next month wasted on unnecessary effort, meh. Sorry, but:

1. this red button is something horrible for eyes - as "popular this week / latest release" was quite good placed in artist page, that this "recommended next" button is: too big, in wrong place and it feels just.. just awful. Sorry.

Also, the idea is good - but it should be done a bit different way I think.
Also [2] - the idea is bad in one point, I mean, discovering bands becomes nothing special after this, it seems like we are more concetrated on discovering MANY music than GOOD music. It's maybe my own thinking, but it's just like treating artists very mindlessly.

2. We are waiting on something serious: not new things, but old and still missing. So when there is so much things to do (BBcodes (!!), groups, journals, tags we can browse... damn, so many things) you are wasting time on something really extraneous, secondary. It's shame on whole Last.fm for over the year, I know, but it hurts with each next not-giving-much update.

Edit: Timezones are quite good, but as it's experimental, I wouldn't say anything positive - I remember similar "experimental" things and they needed much time to work correctly.

Okay, to be fair with everyone: for now, timezones works fine (checked on one weird event and the hours [probably even minutes] are correct) and it's nice joy for me as it means everyone can have more accurate library info.

By the way, one question about graphs: how it will impact on viewing? Would it be daily scrobbles scrobbled to ~2 AM? (for me in Warsaw time, +1) Or would it count to standard midnight? (about 10-11 PM UTC)

Up. Can I get the answer? Seems some people has issues with graphs, so answer can give us wider look at this function.

Sorry, I tried to reply to this before but then I confused myself and had to start again...

As mentioned in another comment (https://getsatisfaction.com/lastfm/topics/website-update-27th-october?topic-reply-list%5Bsettings%5D...), the graphs will show the incorrect range, and the numbers will be as if you were in UTC. This graph should be fixed soon.

Dates everywhere else should be fine, and the correct day boundaries will be visible here: http://last.fm/user/_/library

Finally timezones! Only problem I see with them currently is that the bar graphs don't show up, just the numbers.  They seem to work on mobile though. And the labels for the months are off by a month.

I think that people who was the first to listen with this tags should be banned from last.fm - because they did it intentionally!

You mean, they should be blind - when you write SACRIficEs, you had to write it intentionally. There are very few song which follows this type of weird writing - for now only ohGr comes to my mind. (song like JaKO, HiLO, maJiK, wateR, and so on - by the way, if you like industrial/EBM stuff, highly recommended artist)

Now your scrobbles will show the time in your location rather than UK time.  So if I listen to a song at 9am here in California, the site will show that I scrobbled it at 9am rather than 6pm, or however many hours ahead the UK is.  Now the charts don't as yet reflect that, but at least the times are correct if you set your timezone properly.

I always use the "Similar Artists" section to find new stuff so I don't think I'll be using "Recommended Next". Honestly it's a kinda redundant addition.......

Great work keep it up
yours have the best recommendations as i feel , Spotify mostly suggests me covers of songs i already listen to
and the update that makes them playable in Spotify  makes the best of it
but  some of the suggested songs aren't  in Spotify  so if they can be payed with youtube that would be really great
make Similar Tracks in a track page playable and make the list bigger (maybe a list other than just four thumbnails ) it will be useful than  "Recommended next" for tracks
and for use last.fm as music player queuing options (play next, play last) would nice

and options to map songs that tagged differently (mostly tracks with "feat." artists) to one song will make recommendations and stats better u can use musicbrainz as a guide (https://musicbrainz.org/doc/Style/Artist_Credits/Featured_artists) kind of what https://messybrainz.org/ are trying to do so map them into MusicBrainz Id's
Give edit options so community can contribute and maybey work with messybrainz team ??

Hi Samitha, welcome to Last.fm! Some of your suggestions like more playable similar tracks are already planned or have been suggested by other users as well, check e.g. the FAQ section.

You can add YouTube videos on the individual track pages if you know the link to them, and there is no clip or a clip that you don't like, e.g. from a live bootleg. There is a YouTube search option on that page as well.

We need things like: be able to change user name, customizable layouts, CORRECT auto-correction and others that are more imporatant for users!
And not "Recommended next" or "Experimental timezone"!

"Recommended next" module"
  1. This never asked feature can be nice, but once it appears on my mobile screen, it doesn't disappear and the mobile screens aren't that big.
James, can you add an "x" to that module, so I can switch it off after I've noted the recommendation?
  2. Also the usability of the module isn't so high on mobile devices, as long as I can't play & scrobble albums with the mobile site. And this update I would appreciate without any doubts. Currently we have to copy and paste the recommended artist for a second app like Spotify with the consequense, I use Spotify more than LFM. Any thoughts?
  3. The recommendation feature I really ask for, like a few times before, is "Recommend to LFM user" (list of friends ...) - maybe you can answer this.

Announcement:
This evening I've found a play button on the "Popular this week" and the "Latest release" icon. Directly after using, I've seen this dialog window: Unfortunately it haven't worked. At next I saw the artist site without a play button anywhere. Very sad. Was this an announcement for a soon coming update?

"Recommended next" module
After 10 days of testing, I'm sure, this feature isn't very helpful for me, but it's wasting space on my mobile display. Now I tent to James Jouls opinion. For me, it's really annoying step by step.
I like to appeal to you James Scott, please add a botton for switching off, even you like this feature. Have a look on my display, where I nearly see NO information, which I prefer (without the bandname and counter): I didn't want directly to say, it looks like shit, but including the much space for "popular this week" and "latest release" the artist site didn't make a top attractive impression to me.
Forthermore I guess, this last both features have to be below the "top tracks".

All right, recommended next button is exceptional, but the button is tremendous and repugnant.

That enormous red button is redundant, it attaches out like a sore thumb. It would be useful without the red background.

The recommendation palette should be large, because, every time when I want to see another artist I get the same recommendation.

We are anticipating for something more substantial. Like, being able to see our own tags we can browse, playlists, reviews, guests, friends listening now, organizations, recent listeners... damn, there are plenty of items to count. Not to mention being able to see from which device, they are scrobbling an artist or a band. [I.e. scrobbling from Spotify, AIMP, DEEZER, WINAMP, and VLC...]

You are losing time on something extraneous, especially on something that nobody is interested in arguing about.

Are you planning to start these important features one day?

Neighbours:
Just noticed a change here too, not sure whether this was done recently. Seems now there are less neighbours visible but more important that those who are visible are actually users that have been scrobbeling in de past 10 weeks or so if not past week.

Thanks for that.

Rather have 6 neighbours that are current than 30 of whom most have not been online for months if not years.

For the next sprint I hope EVENTS will benefit from that, clean-up of identical and incorrect venues and then also adding new ones.

Yes, a couple of days before this sprint announcement, it was mentioned somewhere that neighbours had been updated.  Now it should only show people who have scrobbled within the past 2 months.

That's a good suggestion.  :)  Though I wonder how expensive it would be (in terms of data generation), to actually implement.  It's one thing to randomly pick an artist from a precomputed set of similar artists, but for every page, we'd need to cross reference that against your entire library. Still it's a good idea, so I'll ticket it as a follow-up task, and leave it to the team to figure out a more efficient way of doing it.

Experimental timezone support: possible bug.

In my library when I view a month it starts with the last day of the month before. So viewing October shows me all scrobbles from 30 September to 30 October. Incorrectly!

Or is the cause and effect from setting the timezone (and / or the summertime change last weekend?)

Thanks for the note. Yeah, this is a timezone bug. If you're set to anything other than UTC/GMT you'll see some weirdness there. We should have a fix soon.
