Website update - 5th November

  • Announcement
  • Updated 4 years ago
  • (Edited)
Wotcha,

We just released Sprint 171. Here's what's in it:

  • Event creation and editing
  • Set playback preferences - choose your preferred playback provider without having to wait for Spotify to start
  • Show a better prompt when Spotify isn't installed
  • Show average scrobbles per day on hover
  • Prevent spammers from sending PMs
  • Support for [artist], [track], [album] and [tag] bbcode tags in wikis
We're currently working on profile chart customisation, library date filtering, and API account creation. Personal six month charts will be in the next release.

Cheers,
James

Thanks for the update. Just curious, when will we be able to upload new artists images and album covers?

Plus, don't forget what's the point of having album art if I can't see them next to my recently played tracks, add that to the list as well.

Why do you guys focus on fixing  crap nobody gives a damn about but don't work on the whole issue with the inability to upload images?

crap nobody gives a damn about

There two "craps" were highly in demand and were FUNCTIONAL missing elements. The image upload is mostly an esthetic featureand I can understand why it was pushed in favor of more primary features.

Yeah even though you can't even edit the events.

They really hit a home run on that.

Also, "esthetic."

Actually, I would like to add to the whole "Nobody gives a crap about" thing. In truth, at least for myself, as well as others like me, I think it is very important to have accurate Artwork, Artist Profile information, etc...etc...Some last.fm users require accuracy from last.fm in order to do things like tagging their music collections and so forth...Even though, I am temporarily retired from Internet Radio, I plan to return back to it eventually, I need to resort to last.fm multiple times for accurate photos, bio information and Album related information for tagging the Artists in which I tend to play on my live shows. So, you can see that this was very important and I like this update. I am one of the last.fm users whom does actually give a crap about this update. Now, to add to the whole Artist editing and support thing: Will there ever be any point where all Artists who share the same name will not be sharing the same last.fm Artist profile? Take the profile for the Band "Mirror, for instance, there are like 7 different Bands at least who share that same Artist profile. This tends to get confusing for the Artists and also angers many of the fans. If you read the comments then you can see that many fans are angered by this too. I am just curious about it is all.

Different users are going to have different ideas as to what should or should not be given priority insofar as 'what to give a crap about.'

My fundamental problem, I guess, is that I have *no idea* what problems *Last.FM* gives a crap about.  I really don't.

For me, I'm interested in the API.  If Last.FM isn't all that interested in it, I mean, that's fine, it's kinda their prerogative, but it *would* be nice to know what's going on with it, if it's disappearing, if it's changing, if I shouldn't expect missing functions to be addressed for a while, etc.

I dunno.  I guess I would really, really, really, really, really like something of a comprehensive post from Last.FM that at least touches on the state of the various features of the site, including the API.

...and I'm just going to be honest regarding the API stuff - again, it feels like, to me, the things that are broken with it *shouldn't be broken*.  It's weird is all - I just am a bit flummoxed that something like a basic regression test of "does this function actually, like, still work, or does it *return function not actually existing*" was not apparently done prior to a public beta launch.  Doesn't that just seem really, really off to anyone else?  It's like releasing a new version of gcc that is missing all of stdlib or somesuch.  I guess that's why I keep harping about getting some sort of feedback from staff on this one - it really, really feels like the API is just *going away* and they're just not telling us.

I get the sprints; I get the 2 week lag time between results of development; I don't get why no one at Last.FM has made like a 10 paragraph blog posting stating "and here's what we've discovered during this public beta roll-out."  It's been months guys.  I think it's time for some Last.FM staff to do some reflecting on the beta, and the express *something* more substantial than a minor changelog to the community of users here.

For what grain of salt that it is worth; the abstract posted on the site below is appropriate for all to read, staff as well. I feel it is worth five minutes of time to read, it was written one week after the beta site went live. In my opinion; it is clear and contains a fair modicum of truth.

@sachin - cheers for the info. Guess I'm hanging on for a while longer.

I'm sure this has brought up before, but would be really cool if you guys could consider publicising some sort of roadmap for the API fixes (when you know yourself).

If only because last.fm is a dependency for so many web apps. I've lost count of the number of conversations I've had over the past couple of months around last.fm api alternatives, mostly because no-ones really sure when/if [insert favourite endpoint here] is coming back.

Just a suggestion. Do with it what you will. ;-)

I get the same as "My" (above), but sometimes (rare) the proxy setting for me is near Portland U.S. or city south of Seattle (Federal Way.)
I live on First Peoples Nation Lands across from Vancouver Canada (island), same deal No Events, that is a mega music area.

I don't use the Spot. ? It used to be very easy just to plug in your zip or city - bingo. Why is this so hard & was there a Last FM update?

@krs1_ar - Just a thought, seeing as no-ones been able to create events for 3 months, is it possible there's just no events in your area on last.fm?

Just thinking they may start reappearing once people start adding them again.

Okay good point (well) at this point :), but for instance I/we have to plug in this?

http://www.songkick.com/metro_areas/27398-canada-vancouver

Likely I'd use a better site (time constraints)

this what the problem is we are is having; the bigger draws aren't listed, or is the above update events that are created here? like a fundraiser or just a local block party, etc.

We were getting this two weeks ago and its somewhat tailored to one's taste

some staff mentioned they're building a moderation/abuse back-end. for me, aside from vote wars depending on fans taste, I never saw much abuse on the old site, except once people upvoted the drake wheelchair degrassi photo... which I'd hate to be reported as abuse. :(

I'm not a manager, but I would have done basic uploading first (e.g. 2 months ago).

That Events is dead on my page, it only changes when I enter U.S. ? And location gives me events from Portland to Seattle, about 500 kms' south of me (sea.).

@krs1_ar Yeah, I might be wrong tbh. I've just checked events and I have 12 pages, and all of them seem to be within about 50 miles of me.

Maybe Canada's not supported. Are you sure you guys are a real country?  ;-)

Thanks, James. In terms of playback providers, it would be great if users could choose both providers if they want to -- and in the future (if/when more providers are added), users should be able to select any subset (or all) of the available providers.

We wanted to do this, but due to licensing reasons we can currently only support playback for one service at a time.  Sorry about that.  Maybe it'll change in the future, and if so we'll definitely pursue this idea.

I started getting events in Victoria and northern peninsula, so the corporation is using the Century link proxy near Tacoma; I am just wondering why we aren’t getting their events?

Whatever, this has turned into a church choir and web scrobbler is working the best I seen it, there is no point, suggesting, asking.........

Another bug, marking an event as cancelled doesn't do anything, the fact the event is cancelled isn't displayed anywhere on the event itself or on the list of events. Only way to tell is to click on "edit" and then you see the "cancelled" tick box is checked...

So, what's the point of rolling out event creation while the thing is still painfully broken? There's still no way to see who's attending/interested and to leave a shout. I know, I know, that's coming in the next release in two weeks. Or next month. Or next year. Well, in the future, anyway.

Suggestion:

On our profile, "Upcoming" events should be above "Recent" events so that the chronology is correct.

My profile currently looks like this:

Recent

October 30
October 24

Upcoming
November 28

To be clear, I'm talking about the right panel of the profile main scrobble page.

Another way to solve this is changing the order of Recent to newest last, so that Upcoming picks up where Recent left off.

Average scrobbles per day.. before beta I had 130, now.. 110. :<
Sad effects of disabled scrobbling just after beta running + my try to ignore Last.fm, when scrobbling was possible.

Fuck, Last.fm, I just didn't leave you because of my memories, and I mean not memories from Last.fm strictly, but something I have because of you. And when things "changed" seems still.. funny (and it's not good joke, to be honest), I see small pieces of broken glass which is going to be good - today I'm very happy of "average scrobbles" and BBCode coming back.
But, guys, why does it take so long time? I know, I know - you are small team. But I still can't understand, why my beloved one stabbed me in the back. :<
Okay, that was just my sad confession, and it adds nothing new. I wish you good luck, Last.fm crew, I believe in you.. at last, I stayed and didn't give you up, like I said about two months ago.

PS To add something useful to my message - if BBCode is available now, I suggest changing "view" on overview - formating BBCode and "enter" spaces also there will look much more better!

Since you mention API account creation here...
...would it be possible for us to just get some assurances that the actual API itself is something that is just in a state of broken and will be fixed, or if that's not the case and the API is actually fundamentally changing, could you let us know that?

I suspect that the developer API stuff is not exactly top priority, and that's fine, but I've been sitting here wondering "is library.getalbums just broken, or is it deprecated and I need to, like, *do different stuff with my code*".

(also, as an aside - honestly, I find it bizarre that library.getalbums is still non-functional.  I mean, for my homepage on last.fm, you've got some manner of actually getting albums, so...well, it's just weird, that's all.  Which is part of the reason for asking "is that method just like deprecated and no one is telling anyone".)

WAIT. I have many past and future events to add, but how can you EXACTLY create events in "already existent" LastFm venues (with their events history etc)?
I succeeded in finding via Google some venues' lastfm page, but when I click on "add an event" it drives me to the basic event creation form, and I'm afraid that when I fill the "name of the venue" space in the second step, it will create a f***ing duplicate venue.
I WON'T create any event creating duplicate venues (since the merging of duplicate venues was a BIG trouble already in the old site, and I'm afraid it could only get worse in the new one..).
so try to fix this please, or guarantee me that in the last step of the creation form I can choose the specifical venue lastfm page. we're all interested in creating and finding events located in recognisables venues, which have their gigs' history...

You must have noticed that the button on the venue page reads "Find Venue". It does what it says. It will search for a venue with the given attributes (name, city and country) and present you the search results to choose from. We don't have gigs history for venues at the moment but that's a fair point and we will consider that when we work on improving venue search.

ok, I didn't notice the "Find Venue" thing... that's a great thing and finally it's also a NEW FEATURE and not simply an old-site-feature restored. so, now I can say THANKS :) - and I can add a ton of events for the already existent venues in my zone.

I'm not sure about the events in different (new / non already existent) venues, since I read that the venue creation and editing is not available yet. I hope that if I create new venues there won't be duplicate-troubles in the future. But the "Find Venue" thing, if correctly used (and united with the possibility to correct/flag wrong informations and addresses on the event pages) could avoid this and improve the whole section.

ps. this is an example of the Venue LastFm page, which oddly still looks like an old site page (but the new events I'm adding for the future are NOT appearing here... I hope you'll create a similar page for the new site with old and new ones) http://www.last.fm/venue/10236921+GLUE+%3E+Alternative+Concept+Space

(and when you have that page, it would be important to make the venue clickable so you can see the other gigs in the same venue)

creating events works, but it's very unpleasant... you should add all options to one page - i've created ~800 events at last.fm and this really does not encourage me to create more

it;s also very important to change adding new artists - now i must click a button to add another one artist... it should be added like in old last.fm. i know something about that - i've added 400+ artist to one of festivals once. no way to do that in new creator!!!

yeah, for example with the restore of the Venue pages (which I referred above) you could add all new events for the same venue without "finding it" everytime.

I can't delete an artist in a event even though there is a button for it - is this a bug?
