Website update - 7th March (Music page update - subscriber preview)

  • 11
  • Announcement
  • Updated 10 months ago
Hello,

We're continuing to work on the new music page. This is still in subscriber preview while we work on performance improvements and other bits of polish, but we hope to make it available to everyone soon.

Recommended tags
As some of you have noticed, we recently added a recommended tags section. This shows off tags related to music that you're currently interested in. It's a way for you to explore genres when your artist recs just aren't cutting it.

Dismiss recommendations
On the album and artist pages you can now remove recommendations that you're not interested in. Tap the X and we'll never suggest you give Nickelback a chance ever again.

Cheers,
Team Last.fm

Thanks. Being able to dismiss recommendations is great! And it looks like they get replaced with new recommendations too?

I've recently noticed that Various Artist albums appear to be working better so thanks for whatever behind-the-scenes work you've been doing. I can correctly scrobble them from my desktop, although not from my iPhone.

While the scrobbles seem to be registering in my library correctly, there does appear to be some weirdness going on. While I can go to the relevant album page under Various Artists and see the right scrobbles, the album fails to be listed correctly on my profile under Top Albums and will list the compilation album under one of the contributing artists (I think it could be the last played artist from said compilation? I might be wrong). You're probably aware of this but just thought I'd mention it.

Also, when you view a compilation album in your library that is under Various Artists it doesn't list the individual track artists next to the track names - again, hopefully you're aware of this behaviour but just in case you aren't...

You would think after many years of this site being up, that it would be smooth but it continues to be sluggish, and you tinker with the site so much, that it is a 10 second loading site.

I hope it'll be fixed; I can't wait to start listening to my official VA Compilations recorded by Sony House Label. [UPDATE]: I also noticed that I somehow managed to scrobble this compilation. I don't know how I did that, but it looks like the VA catalog finally started functioning after three years of silence.

I also can't see an X anywhere when I 'mouse over' a recommendation. Is this for subscribers only? I am on my recommendations page for Artists & Albums.

Yes, it's currently a preview for subscribers only as part of the new music feature. It'll be rolled out to all users at a later date.

In my case it's a band called "Satan's Hallow" that won't disappear from my recommendations for some reason. Maybe it's the apostrophe or something else...

No, just click the "Music" button at the top right to go to the new music page. Then click through to "Your Recommendations" to see the new changes.

It's also nice to see url links in messages as hyperlinks, as it was with bbcodes for years. :) Subtle, but nice update.

I do enjoy the ability to click a link instead of highlighting it and having to copy and paste.

I would tweak it just a bit though. I'd like the hyperlink to open in a new tab, instead of the same tab. I tend to click a link when replying, and my message disappears. Sometimes I forget to right click and press manually press "Open link in new tab" as well. So having it already open in a new tab would be beneficial. :)

If you're using a mouse, clicking the scroll wheel should open links in a new tab. It's much quicker and easier than right-clicking and using the drop-down menu - and you can open many new tabs from a single page.

Is dismissing of recommendations irreversible? If I changed my mind or made a mistake, do I have a chance to see songs of a dismissed artist again in my recommendations? If I remember correctly, it used to be possible to unban banned tracks from a list. Would it likewise make sense to have a list of dismissed recommendations?

There's no undo, but it's greyed out until you refresh the page so you can at least click through to the artist page if you suddenly change your mind / make a mistake.  If you're unsure, it might be best to get into the habit of opening the artist page in a new tab before dismissing the rec.  That way you can also get a clearer picture of what the artist is about before making a decision.

>>>Would it likewise make sense to have a list of dismissed recommendations?

It's a convenience feature, rather than essential functionality, so as much as we'd like to support this, I can't see a strong argument for doing this in the near future, vs other projects.  Then again, these kind of suggestions are the perfect candidates for additional subscriber perks so that might sway it.

Alternatively, perhaps there's an argument for a "maybe later" option (e.g. skipping instead of banning), or a way to display your recs in a different order besides most relevant (e.g. reverse order, random shuffle), as well as tag filtering  -- so you get new recs, but don't necessarily dismiss the existing ones.

"... On the album and artist pages you can now remove recommendations ..."
versus
"... it's only on the "Your recommendations" page itself, not /music/ page. ..."
First reading of this announcement made me glad, until I realized, it doesn't work on the /music/artist ... pages. For mobile devices it would be better. There isn't too much space to waste:

Because you're just working on this task, I recommend, to add the removability also to the appearing lower recommendation block on the artists pages for mobile devices.

If I dismiss an album recommendation, is it going to try to learn something from it for future recommendations?
For albums, the top reason why I would dismiss a recommendation is that it is just another edition of some album I already know. So I would like to be sure that if I dismiss many albums from artists that are actually my favorite artists, it is not going to negatively impact the next recommendations.

I believe the answer is no, it won't affect other / future recs.  If you dismiss an album, it will just prevent that album from being suggested again.

Great! The old-style recommendations had become less and less useful to me over time. I just tried the new version, and after doing some cleanup, it is looks much better.

Re: Recommendations

You could do with filtering out alternative editions of an album, e.g. standard, deluxe, special, limited, etc. I would imagine most people will agree with me here when I say we don't care to see these kinds of suggestions as they're basically redundant. Certainly they should be pushed down to the bottom of the list of recommendations.

If you listen to an album, you don't want to keep having marginal variations of the same album in your recommendations. Personally speaking, I always opt for the deluxe editions of albums to buy/listen to - or whichever has the most material on - therefore, I'm 100% not interested in listening to the standard edition, for example.

Just a thought.

True, but I imagine this will be harder to recognise and filter out. Unless they've got the stem "- single", it'll be difficult for Last FM to differentiate.

At least with albums there is significant name overlap and repeated phrases ("deluxe edition", "special edition") that can be looked out for.

I think they can filter out relases, that have only 1 song in the tracklist.

Some singles are containing 2-3 songs (for example, single song + bonus song(s), or single song + remixes), so this will hide only some of the singles.

The play button looks neat! Better than the old one that's for sure. But, it wouldn't be bad to make it more transparent if it's possible. The grey background is eating the album picture.

Loved Tracks Radio is somewhere on the To-Do list, as far as I know, probably near to Neighbours Radio. At the moment you can play your loved tracks on-demand by clicking on the first track, i.e. from top to bottom and then continue on the next page.

There are also some ways to export your loved tracks to e.g. Spotify and play them in shuffle mode there, do a forum search for descriptions.

Only came across this latest update. So far so good, I enjoy it and it is a good effort.

I've been away for a year now concerning updates and can't really remember if journals/wiki are supposed to come back. I still miss it the most.

I can ask, but I think if we do anything like that (and I'd like us to), I would expect it to be on the logged in home page, which was originally meant to be where you'd go to get an idea of "what's going on", whereas the music page is more intended to be the place you go for music recommendations.  That's just my take.  Another way of doing this might on the following/followers page, or a dedicated social hub, or perhaps anywhere we display user avatars you could see if the person was scrobbling now and what track.

I can see how it would make sense for this feature to be on the home page from a "what's going on" perspective, but I would suggest it would also make sense to show this on your profile page.

It'd be interesting to know the page/areas that users spend most of their time on, i.e. home page, profile page, artist pages, etc.

"Banning recommendations" reminded me—as a 13-year subscriber (w/ 247k scrobbles) I'd like to suggest the return of track-banning. I listen to hours of "My Mix" or "My Library" every week, and there are certain persistently-presented songs that I'd rather not hear again.

Also, perhaps subscribers should have a larger "bucket" for radio stream fodder. The variety doesn't seem as wide as it once was (2013 or earlier?).

We actually update the site every other week, however not every update brings new features (e.g. yesterday we added the jobs page to the footer), so is not worth creating an announcement post for.  The next meaningful update will be to gradually start rolling out the new scrobble storage system to users, which should be happening in the next week or so
