Website update - 7th October

  • 18
  • Announcement
  • Updated 3 years ago
  • (Edited)
Hello you,

Here's what we released today:

Features
  • Ability to browse up to 250 similar artists
  • Wiki editing is back
Create and edit artist, track, album and tag wiki. View wiki history and revert changes.
  • View shout history
Bugfixes
  • Fix festival subpage redirects
  • Show error message when user hits too many failed log in attempts
  • Link to library from tasteometer
Apologies for the event stuff that I mentioned last time not making this release. It's not quite ready yet. Event history is coming soon (for the record, I've been to 3 gigs in the last two weeks) and event creation/editing not far behind.

We also released some API fixes recently. There's a changelog on a separate announcement.

Cheers,
Team Last.fm

This is all staffs fault. This is what happens when you fuck the site so bad and people get pushed over the edge.

Fix this damn site.

It's worse now, much of the 3rd party chart stuff has closed down. Bandlogos is gone now.. the site is ruined. Also i noticed that scrobbling has gone down, i stopped because it's almost pointless now. CBS has killed last.fm.

it would be nice if lastfm grew the staff and took the opportunity to integrate or re-implement the more popular third party extensions. bandlogos, timed charts, and tag/artist clouds could all be sections within the profile page.alas, I remember a staff comment some weeks ago they didn't have the developer bandwidth to address an known iOS issue.

I'd love to see a modular, customizable layout. I'd even develop an extension if it were possible.

When you go to 'personal' profile, is there something I am missing from drop down menu to return to homepage with recommended “replays,” or are we to use back and forward on our own toolbars?

Also, with such a large recommendation service why are most of the 980+ artists I have listened to limited (9 out of 10 times) to a single suggestion of “you have scrobbled this once, twice . . .” – a glitch, anyone else having this simple problem?

Important quote from the wiki editing page:
Not all BBCode is currently working, if you see some BBCode that doesn't appear to have any effect, please do not remove it.

And switching to your preferred language when editing an artist wiki is still possible at the bottom of the edit page.

Great to see a link for the shouts now (up next to 'loved tracks' link) and for bringing back our shout history. Problem to report: some of the shouts are missing the grey X to delete and now there is no 'reply' link at all.

I am glad to read that, in addition to the creation/editing of event, history will also return; we just have to be a little more patient :p !
Wiki editing is great, but it seems it doesn't include images addition and editing. Some albums are still without cover, and some have a wrong one. Will this feature also be back?
Thanks!

My artists have lost hundreds of their total historic listeners after the 7th October, yet their scrobbles have increased?? Can some Moderator please help me with this issue? For example, the
Artist ”André Wall” lost 150 listeners and exactly 100 listeners on each song since the update on the 7/10.. While his Total scrobbles increased with over 30 000??

I've flagged this with the team to look into.  Were there any other artists besides André Wall? If so, by how many listeners / scrobbles?

For André Wall, do you remember approximately what the listener / scrobble counts were before the 7th?

Hello Jon,

Yes, André Wall had 359 Listeners before the 7th, and all Albums by him have lost exactly 100 Listeners ”Barcelona Diaries (308- Now 208), and so has all his songs.

The other Artist is INVICTUS, and only on the Albums ”Out of the Night”(Had 396 Listeners-Now 226), ”Petal Pie Song”  and ”Love For the Dead”. All these Albums have lost over between 150-100 listeners each. And so has each song on the Albums. ”

Thanks for helping!!

I gained over 50 artists and over 1k plays, if I could give them away I would, its very time consuming deleting them, and many come back next day?

Ability to browse up to 250 similar artists
this probably explains why the artist.getSimilar API is now broken. it could be co-incidence but that's not very likely, is it?

the comeback of a more useful Similar Artists feature (along with the wiki editing) is a good step forward, since one of the core-reasons to use lastfm is find out new music.
the other two core-reasons for me are Organizing your library (and I find library is almost ok now, though still misses improvement like tags etc) and the entire, still missing, EVENTS part (History + Creation/Editing). I'm glad that you're aware of its importance and I hope we don't have to wait so much longer....

ps. about the "Find Out Music" section, it would be very important to also restore a decent search result....with more results for each section and possibly the automatic preview in the searching bar...

The shout history is NOT back, or at least not fully back. It appears to be limited to 50 pages. I'm not the only one who used to enjoy going to the earliest shouts for an artist who became popular since last fm has been around. Then going to the profiles of the users who left those shouts to check out what they're listening to now and to see if they have always picked up on artists who become famous before anyone else. Please bring back full shout histories!

This should just be a temporary restriction while we figure out some performance issues.

I mean what is your game here? Is it a case of first limiting shout history to 10 shouts, if enough ppl complain we bring it back otherwise we can delete them and save server space and thereby money. Oh, ppl are complaining. OK bring back some shout history, limit it to 50 pages and if enough ppl complain we bring back whole history else we can delete those after 50 pages etc.

Is this the whole strategy behind releasing a site almost completely devoid of its former features? You remove all features then only bring back those you really have to. that ppl complain about most. In that way you can get away with the smallest and most featureless site possible which is then cheaper to maintain and store?

There is NOTHING in this whole 'beta' site fiasco to attract new users and subscribers in order to solve last fm's financial issues. That would take imagination. It is all about reducing the service so as to cut costs and then hopefully the money saved will be more than that lost as a result of fleeing users.

The cost-cutting would be about maintenance, though, the people actually working on the features' code. Storage, especially of text data, is so ridiculously cheap that it wouldn't even register. There's no way CBS would be worried about that. Database queries, maybe, but for this kind of data this can be cached super-efficiently. If stuff is slow to return, it's because it seems like a perceived 20% position is all that's left of the development department by this point. That they would prioritise features people ask about the most is fine. That they redirected to the new site before it was even half finished, was not.

What's the point in having a tasteometer but still no neighbours? That should have been the the first thing you brought back as I'd suggest it's the most vital part of the Last FM community.

Bit gutted about events being left out.  In your opinion, do you think it's likely it'll be done in the next sprint, or is it a way off?  I won't hold you to it either way, just keen to see it back.

3 week the same look?  Ivan above feels maybe 2016 a tad conservative after 20 days gone and it is very much the same? Staff people that getsat would not let me log in, said make new account.

Why not let us use old forums? Do you(they) even check the 'What do you think of our new website? No. Chrome Scrobbler works <3

I hope YouTube buys this mess, you know how many millions of people would like to link their YT channel to old site page and all those goodies - nothing is happening here, just wait, wait,  opps, opps, wait same 3 weeks ago? Droid looks mad not paranoid, next update 2016 okay it sort of works a b c ya

Question. Why are the similar artists just in two lines when clearly there's room for one more artist even without making the way too big pics smaller?

Do you have adblock installed?  When I switch it off, adverts stretch about halfway down the page in that space.

I do, but after the adds til the bottom of the page is just a gigantic unused white space. But then the question is why is that space for ads so wide? It takes more the 1/3 of the actual page. And even better, why are the pics so big, especially since some are low quality so when you enlarge them to that size they look blurry.

tbh, I thought having 2 huge pictures per row was a bit strange. They have 3 on the homepage, and it seems like a much better use of space.  And yeah, the image quality looks better in some cases.

Might be so they can fit the text in, but then 3 lines of text is a bit rubbish. Doesn't really tell you much, so you have to click through anyway.

Of course, we should also get at least 250 recommendations , at least for artists. 24 as they are now is not nearly enough. And of course, temporary, because in the future we should also get an advanced recommendation system.
