Hey all,

Today we released Sprint 197 and Sprint 198. This includes one big thing, your Last.year listening report.

The report features a whole bunch of stats around your listening habits, and other Last.fm activity, from 2016. We're really excited about this feature and hope you like it.

You can see your report here: http://www.last.fm/user/_/listening-report/year

Cheers,
Team Last.fm

A few people are having the same issue. Jon said it should be fixed "soon" in this thread  :)

It's a bug related to time zones. Try changing it back to UTC.

Huh? I don't have that problem? When did that start?

This is a neat little feature, but I do feel like you guys should have focussed on sorting out the many core issues and returning the basic features of the site rather than trying to distract us with pretty charts - particularly as this feature isn't alongside any useful updates.

Put simply, what you've done is fudge two sprints together and give us a single feature that nobody wanted or needed.

As I say, I like the feature but I have to echo ohgod's "priorities" comment.

Definitely a good feature, but it probably should have come with something we were missing.. or been delayed until after the site's total functionality is restored.

It's like spending time on window dressing when there isn't much to buy in the shop.

Thanks, Shelly :)

And you're 100% on the money with that analogy, Cam. It would have been fine as an update if "last.year" had been in addition to functional updates or bug fixes. As it is, it stands as something that should have been way down the team's long to-do list.

I like this!

I have a bug in Chrome if you click on the tags pie chart the tooltip doesn't disappear on the tag page - only way to get rid of it is to refresh the page.

I made a video of it happening in Chrome 55 on Windows 10: https://i.imgur.com/M6gmes2.gifv

If you mouse out of the pie chart before it loads then it doesn't show. :)

EDIT: seems to be fixed now.

Cool, but seriously this is the last update of the year? Wow, we want the utilities of the old site back, please stop playing with our favorite site. Lastfm needs serious admins who know that it's not cool to leave a badly finished and weird website in the air.
Funny that most of the people on the charts that you released today, do not even use lastfm anymore. I checked the top 5 of people who listened to music, new artists, and practicing all of them no longer use the site

I hope that when December ends, it'll be included on these charts, because it's a whole month of scrobbling! But, neat feature, I won't say i'm pleased, but I hope that doesn't mean that the other core features will take longer to be updated

It's a neat feature, I like it, no question James. But seriouly:
Do you have really such less sensitiveness and understanding for the users wishes and needs?
I don't understand the way your team is working along the neccessary features. I wish I could understand, the way you're thinking and planning the developement process.

^ This was my immediate reaction as well - I was scratching my head, wondering why Last.fm is investing seemingly crazy amounts of dev-time and resources into something like "Last.year", instead of bringing back vital features... But I think I get it - the most important goal for Last.fm/CBS right now might be to get people interested and create accounts, to keep the numbers up. Because where there are no eyeballs, there is no ad money and a feature like "Last.year" might actually draw some people in - seeing those pretty graphs on Twitter and Facebook should get folks interested and I wouldn't be surprised if new sign-ups go up noticeably as a result of this.
So yeah, if this is good for Last.fm, it's good for me I guess. And let's be real, those graphs are pretty sweet ;D

As smart the first part of your analysis is, as wrong is your result Pixie. Sorry. But in one point I agree: Neat surface with less and less substance. At the end we will see, what we will get in a world full of neat things instead of functionality. Who cares for the details when the surface (of whatever) is so pretty smart? (Btw. this is a general economic process since some decades.)
Panem et circenses - an old rule. Don't forget.
Like you hint, it's imaginable, that it's the plan of LFM is, to become more mainstream like - normal business, so what. But I doubt, that things which are likeable for the consuming masses are also good for thoughtful music lovers.
When I have to pay for a good LFM - okay, I also like to be payed for my work. But when I will be fobbed with neat glass beads instead of useful tools, regardless what I pay, I feel like to be cheated and I have no idea why. Do you?
;-)

Of course you are correct, the Last thing I want is a pretty interface with no substance, a modern UI without features. Believe me, I feel like crying whenever I look at my old (before the re-design) Last.fm screenshots ;) but I want to be hopeful, I want to believe that we will get our old Last.fm back, that we will get groups, personal tags, a real About Me with BBCode, Journals, etc. etc.; I hope that the "pretty" features will get enough new users on board to make CBS happy, to bring in enough money for more devs & more work hours, and that this will eventually enable a return of everything we're missing right now. A return of the old features, just dressed up in new clothing, with a clean & modern code base that will allow Last.fm to create amazing stuff that wouldn't have been possible with the old code base.

I'm a glass-half-full kind of person and I refuse to believe that the spirit of Last.fm is gone completely ;)

Although it's not something important, I won't suck as always and I can say, it's nice feature, really, it surprised me a lot.
Just, two things which I want to add - whole December when it ends (as Marcus Vinicius stated) and possibility to see this "last.year" everytime. So, you know, when for example, 2017 will end, it will be so nice to come back to summing up previous years also.

So, 9/10 for this function, 6/10 for update imo. ;)

Taken in isolation, I agree that the function is probably a solid 9/10. However, I think to call it a 6/10 update when it's technically two sprints combined, a superfluous (however nice) feature, and it's been done at the expense of other things that so desperately need doing/fixing, is rather...generous. You must be full of the festive spirit, Tom ;-)

I like this. It's interesting to see so many of my stats displayed with these neat little graphics. I wish the banner wasn't so big though. I assume it's on our profiles (rather than the home page) so we can look at stats for other users too. I noticed that there's a new tab to access this stats page, so I've removed the banner in my Stylish script. Back to normal.

I'm a little sad that I'm only 4th on my discovery leaderboard simply because the top 3 people created their accounts this year, so everything they listened to was counted as a "discovery".

While this is a nice addition, it's rather underwhelming considering we've been waiting a whole month for a new update. There's so many core features that are still missing and the ones we have are still a long way from completion.

What?
last.fm is owned by CBS and has a larger staff?

Still waiting for the AUTOCORRECTION to be turned on where we can see our new libraries that were what i thought slightly delayed.  This year end is nice.  But getting the Autocorrection to work would be the best Christmas present.  And so i still wait *sigh*

I did 176 in a day this year but that would have been a party night with a continually running playlist. I've got no problem with users skewing numbers but I don't understand a) the point of it and b) how anyone has the time to do it. I do, however, appreciate why that sort of senseless behaviour annoys the feck out of other users.

Other users managed to do even worse than cdog215. sl_p had 9,114 days of listening time?!
They should definitely use this new last.year feature to do some cleaning on last.fm. These accounts should be suspended at the very least.

They could have really improved on the site by going the right direction, but it seems they've lost their minds again and will take a long holiday to think things over and don't expect much and as we close another disappointment year from lastfm staff we'll see what 2017 has offer and I am not expecting much from them. They'll probably be going the wrong direction again.

@phoenixbloom: that's the problem, dearheart. people have been going away. just take a look around the site. or, just take a look at the specific placement of the last.year banner on your profile page. it's no mistake that they placed it there. lots of fed up people have left, others still scrobble out of habit but rarely visit let alone log in to the site. and my guess is that by the time certain things/features are restored people are going to be like, "oh that would have been cool like 3 years ago" and not give a s--t any more because they'll have so obviously moved on. point is, the more time it takes to fix/re-implement features, the more time it takes for new features to be developed (in hopes of attracting new users) and the more rapidly last.fm becomes irrelevant.
my two cents.

I guess the conceptual difference between whining and constructive critism we can differentiate with
  • mentioning also the positive aspects,
  • show alternatives, saying what one want,
  • making suggestions and
  • helping others.
When I remember all those suggestions which were made, when I remember the (try of) help for other user, when I think about mentioned alternatives to specific sprints or the mentioning of positive aspects, I know, what we're talking about.
And when I think about the staff reaction to wishes, suggestions and needs I also know something about the balance of social competence.

Just gonna say that this is really cool. I have of course have issues with this site but this is something you did right and you deserve props for that. I will however add that I'm sad about my "longest streak" because that was "your" fault that it broke since I couldn't scrobble for almost 3 full days back in November.

When it said "last year", I thought you meant this update was from 2015. Very misleading.
