Website update - 9th March

‘Allo ‘allo,

Apologies for the recent stability issues that have affected the site in the last couple of days. We're aware of these and are doing everything we can to address them. Fixes for missing scrobbles/loved tracks should be available in the next day or so. Thanks for bearing with us while we get these problems straightened out.

In other news, Sprint 179 was just released. It contains the following:

Features
  • Track page reshuffle
We’ve rearranged the track page slightly. This improves the right rail and makes some features more obvious to new users.
  • Improved ‘redirected from’ / ‘did you mean?’ notifications
In preparation for the catalogue work, making sure it’s obvious when you’re looking at corrected catalogue pages.
  • New wiki, tag, upload and suggest calls to action
  • Allow gallery index to be sorted by date added
Bugfixes
  • Stop buylink dropdowns for unlinked tracks loading in the whole site
  • Stop partial page loads from hanging
  • Fix for broken love and play buttons

In Sprint 180 we’re looking at some event page bugs and improvements, playing videos on track pages, automatically updating recent tracks on profiles, and loads more catalogue work.

Cheers,
Team Last.fm

Still some things I am waiting for:
  1. About me section BBcode.
  2. About me section BBcode.
  3. Did I mention About Me section BBcode?
  4. Also, "Listening now" on artist's pages is not helpful enough for me to find like-minded listeners. I wish the "top listeners" section would return, so I could see where I'm at and see who listens to one artist more than me, etc...
  5. HUGE ONE: Why can't I go to my listens page for a particular artist via the artist page? Sure, I've listened to Rihanna 1,060 times, but why isn't that phrase a link?! Why can't I click that and see details? That was not a problem with the old site...
  6. I want my tag cloud back please.
  7. I want to choose which events display on my profile. Like, it tells me upcoming but why can't I also show my favourite concert I attended?
  8. Something has to be done to the image voting system. In some cases, the same pictures are stuck as main because they were voted that way years ago...
  9. Oh ya, and About Me section BBcode.

@jus06 - re: #5, see below image where I've circled in red.

The main point I would wholeheartedly agree with you about is #8, concerning main images that have been main for years. I usually find this a problem for artists who don't have huge numbers of listeners and therefore not a very active profile page on here. They could do with resetting the vote counts on images every 6months/year or something to sort this - or perhaps at least for say the top 10 images.

This morning I got about 200 loved tracks back (now 923 instead of 700something yesterday (at least I thought, I"ve had about 1.000)). Maybe I'm a lucky one and can see them tomorrow again. Thank you.

Even with auto-correct turned off, the auto-corrected form of tags still show up in my library.

Can we please have the option to select 'no' when asked "Did you mean *insert auto-corrected form of song title*" so that it'll no longer auto-correct in our libraries?
Are you going to return the user search? And what about comments? Nowadays man can consider them gone... That's one of the most dissappointing things in this Last.fm
And, guys, get rid of that 'recommendation system'. It's rubbish

Will the page ever stop asking me if I want to switch languages?
I'd assume that after clicking it away 2 thousand times and telling it on all kinds of computers and browsers that it could store the information that I actually like the page to be displayed in English...

I've been having terrible problems over the last two days.  Player isn't working, not connecting with Spotify.  Tracks are not concurrent.  Please tell me it won't go on for ever

Anything to say about groups? Are they still coming back "in the coming months", like 6 months ago?

Maybe something between March and July. Jon told, they want to work on the "social aspects" in the second quarter of 2016. (Sorry can't find the link)

But what about my inability to skip a track?  And I still have to refresh the page every time that I want to hear another song.  Would you please respond so that I don't have to print my listener statistics and delete my account?

I was so glad I could love my tracks again recently, but now it's back to randomness. Some tracks work just fine to love, whilst others just outright refuse. Can't even find a common denominator. It just seems, well.. random. Please look it up.

So much is still broken on last.fm. I'm not sure why you didn't keep the old version running alongside, with the option to test the Beta as you added all the existing features. I've basically stopped using last.fm altogether and I now use other services such as Songkick to track and recommend my events, and spotify to recommend me new music based on what I listen to.

The new website does look and run better, but there is still so much missing and this is causing a lot of your userbase to now go elsewhere when you can't provide the functionality they need.

The time period between April 2015 and August 2015 was when they had the beta site up simultaneously with the release site.

I am honestly struggling to figure out what, if anything, the development team learned in that period.  I honestly just don't get it.  I mean, there isn't anything to be done about it now so understanding how the beta launch happened the way it did isn't of any real utility to me outside of academically, but I confess that it does still really bug me.

It's just plain bizarre.  And I mean that from both a technical standpoint and a product release standpoint.  I just don't fundamentally get it is all: I just don't understand the order of events.  I really don't.

April 2015: Launch of the opt-in new beta site for Last.fm.  Presumably, since we're calling it beta, this means it was either at or very close to being feature-complete.  At least in an ideal world that's what that would mean.  I get that words like 'alpha', 'beta', 'release candidate', and 'release' are somewhat squishy words that do not have clear, absolute delineation.  But generally speaking, beta tends to be closer to feature-complete than further away.  Now, feature-complete does not necessarily mean feature-parity with the existing release of the product.  After all, newer/updated versions of products can have different features, and often times does due to the fact that someone is generally trying something new when coming out with a new version of their product.

August 2015: Beta is officially launched, and the existing functional release is destroyed (or lost or in some other way prevented from existing).  A myriad of problems are present, as is expected with a new product launch (particularly a beta <seriously...seriously seriously seriously who plans a beta launch whilst simultaneously not planning for the contingency of "beta done not work quite as well as we thought so let's make sure the currently working thingie is still available to us in case the beta does not go as well as hoped - has ANYONE with the technical team been involved in product development before?!?!?!>).

Time between August 2015 and March 2016: Features are being added into the beta.  Many basic features.  Features that existed in the old site.

Here is where I'm just at a loss.  Either a) these features were initially planned to be incorporated into the new site, and somehow, the new site was actually labeled a beta long before a good number of the intended features were actually implemented and/or given a basic rudimentary validation test or b) these features were not initially planned and Last.fm is now discovering what features need to be in the site sometime after the site was labeled beta.

Sorry.  I'm kinda just ranting here.  But Last.fm, this beta launch of yours has been seriously weird, strange, and bizarre.  I'm of the opinion that something very tragic happened from either a business-to-business relationship standpoint or from an internal resource standpoint (like, say, the entire dev team got fired in August and nuked the whole old site as some manner of revenge at being canned, or perhaps someone screwed up some backups, I dunno), and that said tragedy is simply something that Last.fm has no interest in disclosing (for possibly good reasons, possibly bad reasons).  That's just speculation.  But this launch is sufficiently bad that the speculation is at least interesting.  I've said it before - I really cannot wait to read the case study that comes out of this.

Good post. I enjoyed reading it.

I don't think we'll ever fully understand the truth behind the Beta launch. But I would find it hard to believe that the current developers are responsible for the switch - I mean look at the backlash and incredible workload they have to deal with now. It looks like higher-up mismanagement on a gigantic scale. Last.fm wasn't profitable, the exact opposite actually. The website and hardware was extremely old and outdated. It's like they left it until it was too late...

But like you said, all we have is speculation. I'm constantly jumping between two states of mind. On the one hand I'm sad and disappointed that we've lost so much. On the other I feel sympathetic towards the devs who have a lot of work on their hands and an angry, hostile community.

But at the end of the day what's happened has happened. We just need to deal with it and move on. The main 3 reasons I use this website are still functional. I can still Scrobble my music, find new artists and chat with people. Progress is slow, but we might look back on this later with a brilliant and much improved website and laugh at how silly we were.

That rocks, oldschool. Above (JD) I think most of us know the askewness of this one way or another, we just can't say it, we don't want to.

all very well, lastfm doesn't work in ordinary windows, but works in google chrome. Please can you fix that?

Normally I'm all for new things or updating a website, but this beta version doesn't seem to work, compared to the old one which seemed to work ok
