Why did last.fm decide to kill a bunch of artist pages?

I've been willing to tolerate a lot of stupid decisions by the last.fm staff, but this is honestly just aggravating. It seems like a bunch of controversial artists have had their pages completely wiped clean, with no shouts, pictures, etc. Most of the artists affected by this seem to be racist/NS bands (which I get, though I still think the decision to censor them in this way is infantile), but a number of non-racist bands have been censored as well. Pages for popular and relatively normal death metal bands like Mortician and Pungent Stench have been also been completely nuked. Is last.fm really trying to be the morality police now and censor naughty lyrics? What could possibly be the rationale?

This website has honestly gotten so bad. It's like the staff hates the userbase and is actively trying to alienate longtime users with their endless list of botched decisions since 2015. I've stuck around for as long as I have mainly for the great community and the lack of a decent alternative, but this will likely be the last straw for me unless the non-racist bands at the very least are uncensored.

I checked out and the pages containing slurs (for example: N***** and F*****) are still up and you can upload and shout on them. A shame that last.fm cares more of banning innocent artists than the other ones.

One of German punk bands OHL was also deleted for being “controversial.” They have over 10,000 listeners.

So? What is going to happen? Nothing?
It seems most of us is complaining.. But, do they care about us?
Beside the same official usual answer we've been receiving, any action, or discussion?

I understand they can do whatever they want. It's a private company, they can remove whatever band, people, users, photos..

But, what's next then?

They say they're going to review artists, but how?
They are lucky because we are nerds and we are here since a decade or more, there is nothing similar to lastfm and we keep staying, even if they're trying to do everything to make us escape...

They are definitely reading all of this, and simply ignoring us. There was a guy in the middle of the thread who reported a bug and an authority replied to him. They don't reply to any of us, however, except the moderator Katy. They just don't care and nothing will be done. Oh, am I wrong, LastFM? Then prove me wrong :)

I provided a response six days ago here. Neither staff nor moderators are going to check in daily to reiterate what has already been said.

Enjoy your userbase not going to check last.fm at all and jumping ship to any real alternative that appears on horizon.

Or you know, a novel and revolutionary idea - listen to user feedback and engage with them properly, rather than pointing us to an "official answer" that's clearly unsatisfactory to many. I know, I know, radical thoughts here

Even if there was some regulatory reason for restricting access to some of the content, there are better solutions to this. The current implementation is at the very least lazy and ignorant of the user base.

Mortician is still blacklisted 2 weeks later. Mods, please answer: are you seriously blacklisting the page solely because some ultra-obscure artist released an anti-semitic song under this moniker? If so, that is patently ridiculous. A quick glance at the charts for the page will show you that's not the Mortician we're all listening to, and I've never heard of the Nazi Mortician. Can I please get a real answer to this?

Got some more bans for y'all. Can you ban those please? Thanks in advance.
"We gonna order take out and when we see the driver
We gonna stick the 25 up in his face......
White boy in the wrong place at the right time
Soon as the car door open up he mine
We roll up quick and put the pistol to his nose
By the look on his face he probably shitted in his clothes"
- Dead prez, 420k listeners.

"Kill the white people; we gonna make them hurt; kill the white people; but buy my record first; ha, ha, ha"
- Apache, 23k listeners.

"Now I'm black but black people trip 'cause white people like me; white people like me I but don't like them. . . . I don't hate whites, I just gotta death wish for motherfuckers that ain't right"
- Ice-T, 211k listeners.

"The black man is god. . . . buy a Tec [and] let loose in the Vatican. . . I love the black faces; so put your Bible in the attic"
- Brand Nubian, 226k listeners.

There were some more above and I'm not quite sure if I repeated some of them, but anyway. You now have two choices:
1) Those pages are getting banned and wiped for promoting racism against white people, promoting violence and killing, and promoting the supremacy of black race above everyone - for the same exact reason why nazi bands are getting banned.
2) you are explaining why they are not getting banned instead of ignoring us. I really want to understand the difference.

Just to clarify - I'm not a nazi and never support their movement. I don't even listen to their music. And I'm not defending them. Because it's internet. You can choose what you see and what you are interacting with.
What pisses me off is that you are being absolutely hypocritical. So again, you ban everything racist or everything stays. There is No. Other. Way. Around. It.

Or...maybe I will get myself banned, who knows, won't be surprised anymore tbh :D

Mortician's a pretty shit band though. I think Last.fm should only allow good (TM) bands and block bad ones. No more Slipknot either!

Why do want to the Administration expel Slipknot? What is the point of this site if everything that we dislike should be expelled? So, if you don’t like a particular band, then it should be banned on your request. Then why did you bother to create an account on this site if you believe that every band, which you loathe, should be expelled on your request? I don’t understand the point of your comment. I hope you were joking when you said this.

One more thing...

- bs steps like this won't actually stop the spread of anything. If someone wanted to access anything that this page blocks, there are many ways to access and view it. Long term, after all the virtue signalling coming from the Last FM team, it will actually make zero difference in what they are trying to achieve. - what they have, on the other hand, achieved, is made their software more annoying to use, with less utility. It just looks broken and unfinished.

They obviously don't care, cough - "I already gave a response, moderators won't reiterate what they've already said", but still worth mentioning that they're pursuing either the wrong goals, or the right goals in wrong ways.

I think a 18+ restriction message before entering the artist page would be more than enough.

Thank you for your feedback, however this discussion has run its course and will now be closed.

As previously stated, the last.fm legal team are reviewing the artist pages flagged in this thread, and we expect that a small number of them will be reinstated. Thank you for your patience in the meantime.
