I'm not really fond of the new website. I acknowledge the fact that the website just isn't finished yet, but why did you guys just remove the old layout while the new one isn't even working properly?

I was wondering if the "about me" section will return since I was quite attached to that. Have the old "about me" pages been saved?

Another question I have is if there's a list of "things that have to be done" before you guys see this version as finished, and how long it will approximately take to finish everything?

I loved the about me section as people had made a lot of cool links and codes that would quickly show on your profile page artists you liked and such... and also upcoming events... recent activity.  Now, you can only have one view for artist and album.  I like those to be recent so having the about section be all time was cool.  You still have that whole column over to the right on the profile so you could put it back.

Good post, Jessop. Only thing I would say is that CBS probably doesn't expect LFM to turn a profit. I'm certain you know why that is. X

Call it entitlement all you want, asking someone to pay for writing a few lines and posting some images on a sidebar is insane. Of course charging for streaming is something entirely different and they can charge for that but not for the sidebar...

why is streaming different? LFM at one point you could stream music without paying for it without going through a third party app...  I do understand missing the "about me"  for myself I shrugged my shoulders as perhaps something better will come along. If not, this is their web site I don't pay the bills not even a VIP subscription would cover the cost.  Do I think the roll out was an mangled mess of goo?.. Yes ..   So what would you suggest as a way for this site to gain money?  If you were in the CEO of Last.fm chair, what would you cut and what would you keep? How would you add new users to the site?

The about me section was really the only way to customize our profiles, and now it's basically gone. Only pure text is allowed at this point. I agree, I hope the old one comes back.

As someone who loves stats and data, and music, those community made tools in my "About Me" section were very important to me. I can't imagine Last.fm without them... Plain text just isn't the same at all, we need that customization.

I loved to keep a collage of my top 50 albums in my "about me." I know other people liked to keep track of concerts they've been to, or just a blurb/bio. it was a huge part of the site and if it's gone forever that's super gross

I totally agree with this statement. What a horrible change to the site. It makes no sense at all!

I agree with what everyone else has said. This has basically destroyed the point of community made charts, collages, etc... I don't even remember half the sites I had in my About Me section and now they are gone.

Actually, if you click on 'settings' on your profile page, scroll down past 'It's all about you, baby' you will see everything is still there, considered 'old stuff' but it's still there. So maybe it will still be there when they get this site running right. They weren't getting enough people to do the option of the new site, so they kind of threw the beta at us with no notice. I knew it was coming, it was just such a shock it threw everyone off. I don't think it will be gone forever. I have seen staff posts where they say not to worry, a lot of what is missing will return. Even the old version might come back so they can implement all our feedback.

Yes Jenna, I think you maybe correct. Or even changed slightly .. If you remember some time ago before most caught wind of an alpha being started .. During the planning phase.  When you signed on LFM, their was a questionnaire to fill out (if you please) asking way back then to tick off in boxes what was important to you on LFM... also a box open for you to express why these things were important. Now depending on how many of the 180 million active users responded, I think may determine what they have done or will do.

I am also aware of the big players in the streaming world.  You have Facebook who just hired a team at  a price tag of 350 million to come up with their own scrobbler this one will also scrobble what you watch such as movies, TV, Youtube, and the list goes on.  LFM has a limited partnership with Spotify ... Spotify has limited partnerships everywhere  one being the just announced  juggernaut Viacom (mother company is CBS) Viacom and Spotify are in a limited partnership to come up with a scrobbler like Facebook but less intrusive, LFM has this new new data engine is being  installed as we speak (or squeak).

Other factors, all players in this game of thrones.. are worried about the outcome of Apple... Already after the launch of their service  within the first three months they have generated paid subscriptions on the higher level tier of 15.00 USD surpassing what took spotify 10 years to get to. 75% of spotify users are on the freemium level.   In the next 3 months it will be known if Apple will have found the opening or the key to get subscribers to pay the 10 or 15 dollar option or not.

You will see more limited partnerships such a Rdio, Deezer and others joining in.

You will also see the limit on how long and how much free music you will have as most of these streaming companies are working out a deal so they close this gap and be able to make some money.  As any streaming service ends up in the hole.

So you see it's about many things besides this bubble here on LFM...  But do play a larger role on the map.  I don't think we will know the outcome for many years to come. Still battles with record companies, producers, advertisers. Legal issues national and international  and laws yet to be written.  It's really is as game of thrones.

This is what is driving me away from this site, if i can't have my bandlogos in the sidebar, then this new site is just not going to work out for me. I'm already not liking some of the other stuff including the artist lists on the profile.

I want my sidebar with BBcode back as soon as possible!
Also:
* tasteometer
* neighbours
* thumbnail layout for my library
* at least 500 similar artists
* sane pagination buttons (first, back, n-2, n-1, n, n+1, n+2, next, last) instead of dumb "next"

Yeah, please fix that lack! :(

The new profile page looks so undone and impersonal. I really liked and used the feature of binding in images like tag clouds.
And where and why the heck is the taste-o-meter gone?

Didn't you already take a look at your settings guys ? "About Me" section WILL NOT BE COMING BACK. It is now limited to 200 characters.

If you want to preserve what you did in this section, you have to hurry and copy/paste your old About Me stuff in the temporary "To help you get started, here's your old stuff:" canvas, in the settings.

So forget all you knew about this section. It is now dedicated to ads, ads, ads and more ads.

Be wise. Use Adblock.

What is really stupid is you can't even copy your old about me info! Atleast I can't.

I was able to copy mine by:

1) Clicking within the box

2) Holding the CTRL + A keys to select all text

3) Holding the CTRL + C keys to copy, then

4) Using CTRL + V to paste elsewhere.

Hope this method works for you!

As a developer of sidebar badges (www.lastfmtools.com) I am very sad that this feature has disappeared. I don't think it will come back. It's all advertisements now.

I suggest looking into http://blog.hatchet.is/. Hopefully they will offer a feature that will allow last.fm developers to put customized info in. I don't know what they have planned or even if they will plan on having charts, but there's really no alternative right now and since that site is under development i want to have a site that looks more like chart stats and less like a twitter or myspace.

As someone who has paid to be a permanent premium user of the sidebar badges you develop, I'm also disappointed with this. Last.fm should understand that besides removing something beloved by users, they are removing an economic niche that provides a source of income for some people. Hopefully, they will listen to the outcry against its removal and bring it back.  Until then, I will make it a point to not click on their advertising links.

Did you ever? ;-) Click on the ads, I mean. That's not why we're here, and those only came about when the ORIGINAL LFM-team in London sold out to CBS. The "old LFM-site" which everyone is now speaking of as the "original" one is not; it was already impaired, wing-clipped, from financial interests over the community's. As for the popular sidebar badges, how can you actually PAY to be a premium user for services free-of-charge, unless of course you mean services like Web-Stat.com, etc, but those were not developed by LFM.

> how can you actually PAY to be a premium user for services free-of-charge

I paid to be a premium user of CrossProduct's sidebar badges at lastfmtools.com. Take a look at who started this thread. I used this to display albums I listened to without blank images showing up for albums without images. Because of this, it was superior to another tool for displaying album images, and it was superior to how last.fm is now displaying album images.

It would be great if we could all consolidate into a Last.fm group, as there are a number of support forum postings about this topic. Maybe we would find strength in numbers in terms of voicing our concerns regarding this misguided change to Last.fm moderators.

Does anyone know of any groups that are already started up for this purpose?

How the "About Me" section is now, there are no words how much of a setback this is. Throw everything out your community has build up in one swift stroke. Other websites strive to advance and evolve for the benefit of their userbase. Last.FM just went several era back on the evolution scale.

It's soulless, cold and cheap-looking.

tbh I don't care about the 'About Me' section, never did. But I'd pay (probably more than the $3/month too) for the ability to have configurable/more extensive stats. and no ads. as it stands now i see absolutely NO reason to renew my subscription.

The main reason I subscribed was to not only to get rid of the ads, but I also liked the "recent visitors" addition. I do hope that returns as well as the other "about me" customizations. As of right now, everyones pages look so drab.

When I fill out my About Me like so:

A
B
C
D

It shows up like this:

A B C D

Surely this is an easy fix?

Yeah, just another broken thing on this unusable new site. The aesthetic changes aren't nearly as annoying as the little problems like this everywhere...can't browse library or artist photos with any ease, no uploading/voting on pics, search function is grossly limited, and so on.

Not to mention, endless title bars of artists' foreheads. Who thought up this mess??
