This was something brought up during the Beta phase, but it appears the issue still hasn't been fixed. There doesn't seem to be a way to switch from Spotify player to the Youtube one, without it trying to connect to Spotify first. From what I can tell, makes it impossible for non-Spotify users to listen to radio! Any clarity on this?

Since there was a change to the Beta I can not hear my library or my radio mix. My system is Mac OS X 10.6.8 and every time I try to access, I am directed to the Spotify.Gostaria to solution to my problem because I do not like Spotify and, if not resolved, I will end my subscription.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Sorry, I'm not using Spotify..

I use Last.fm because I don't need another app for finding and playing music. I hope that this link to using Spotify is only temporary. Note, I am using Windows 10 and Google Chrome.
Please don't force me to use something I don't wish to.

Thank you.

It baffles me that a "showstopper" issue regarding a major site feature is allowed to go Live.  I work for a company that develops electronic medical record software for doctors, and we would *never* let a showstopper issue go Live for our clients, let alone for weeks at a time!  I understand the team is working to correct / improve this, and I am thankful for that, but I still can't believe this was allowed to be released in its current state.

I will repeat myself -- Originally last.fm didn't have any stream capacity whatsoever it was never intended to be a place for stream audio let alone video. It was a place where you could keep track of what tracks you have listen to in the past, show you what others are listening to so that you could make friends based upon music tastes and then get recommendations from either last.fm or other users. CBS has effectively done away with this with this version of the website. Users are complaining on other websites. Do you know how much money is involved with obtaining the rights to stream the music on demand?

That's what I enjoyed, making friends and listening to music. \i didn't intend streaming from it, I think people got the wrong end of the stick there.

Yeah, I can agree with that.  I too use the site primarily for listening statistic tracking and recommendations.  I'll give them a bit of credit though:  Last.fm Radio was decent up until the point CBS cut negotiations with the record labels (early 2014 I believe).  Since then, it's been floundering.  I'd actually rather see the radio feature put out of its misery than leave it in its current half-baked, pathetic state.

@gworley, actually up until a few years ago, Last.fm did have streaming capacity and quite an extensive catalog at that. You could create some interesting radio stations by combining artist or tags. I discovered a lot of great music this way, but it was just too cost prohibitive to continue apparently. You could also stream on demand if the artist/label had uploaded their music to the database.

I would like to be able to set Spotify as the default source but in case the song is not available, then use YouTube to play it

I want the opposite to be also true. I do use Spotify and enjoy Spotify. However 90 percent of the tracks that the service tries to play o YouTube are not the right track nor most of the time they aren't even related to the music but last.fm is scobbling them as if they were a musical track and then when I press the next track button last.fm decides to quit playing and I had to start playing from scratch. YouTube is a VERY POOR choice to play music based on search criteria -- try a YouTube search for Camouflage and Winter and see what you get.

I agree that it is definitely not set up correctly right now, but the way it used to be when users could add the proper video was pretty good (though every now and then some random person's guitar/bass cover was stuck as the main video on a song page and that was pretty annoying).  I think right now there is some way they are automatically connecting videos to a song and it is not always right and isn't even able to find a video to connect to sometimes.  I heard they are going to add the option for users to add videos again, partner with more sources other than YouTube and Spotify and that there is going to be an option in your settings to choose your preferred source.  No idea when it is going to happen, but I hope it is soon because trying to Srcobble directly from YouTube and not from the play bar is a mess because no one understands correct naming conventions, grr!

Hmmm... Please, can you make at least ONE example of what you're saying here ?
I did NOT find one for myself; not now, on this new interface, and not even until a month ago, on the old interface: I barely found a handful of examples of such misplaced youtube videos ! (and yes, I did used youtube player pretty much as to know what I'm talking about !)

Ah, and if you intended to 'talk" about the song Winter from the band Camouflage, than YES, I found it as FIRST search result ! So ... well, what problems have you encountered so far as to make you say you don't find proper results when searching a song on Youtube ?

90 percent of the tracks in my library that last.fm tries to play on YouTube are not the right track. I have a lot of extend mix and remixed tracks in my library as I converted over 16,000 12-inch singles into MP3's that I keep in iTunes in sync with my iPod classic and very few of them get played properly when last.fm tries to play them on YouTube.

When I do a manual search of YouTube , I can find them just fine. However since no one can now go and vote or change or report a video as being bad as they could on the old site, it seems that last.fm is choosing the track based upon searching for the key words in the tracks title and artist and not picking the right video from YouTube. Plus when I am listening to music I am not wanting to watch "TV"... If I want to watch music it has to be live.

Personally if it isn't available on Spotify is streaming and it is available in my Spotify library then it should be playing that track.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Last.fm Spotify Radio Summary.

Hello Last.fm staff. I just want to tell you that giving a choice of using Spotify or Youtube Radio only if user install a Spotify App is the most stupid thing I've ever seen on my life. It is such stupid that it encouraged me to sing in to this community support website only to write about this stupidity you've made.

Just to make it clear: I really appreciate their job because last.fm radio is the easiest way to get recommendations and discover new music but forcing people to install programme with adverts even if they won't use it (because they could also use youtube) is just unfair.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Im so confused can someone please answer some simple questions for me?.

Okay so first of all I don't even know if this is the right place for this, if its not I apologize. I was actually trying to email someone from lastfm but apparently they don't have a support email address (which seems completely ridiculous maybe I'm mistaken and just couldn't find it) so I'm posting here. When I try to play my library through the lastfm website it says "Connecting Spotify..." then it changes to "Could not find Spotify. Starting installation." I don't have, nor do I want, Spotify. Is the old lastfm player gone? does it only go through other players now? I'm really confused all I want to do is play my lastfm library/mix on lastfm without installing, or signing up for, anything else. Is this no longer possible?  hopefully someone here can help me.

Yes, sadly it is gone for the time being. They have said they will bring it back soon. Don't hold your breath though.
The library/mix etc radio via youtube does still work but it requires patience, refreshing the page over and over until you get a youtube stream connection instead of spotify. But be warned, it will only stream about 2 songs and then try connecting spotify again

So you poor quality music? Mostly if you download the video and looked at the bit rate of the audio you would find that most are around 128 kbps while some are 64 kbps and a few are higher than 128 kbps. To me not easy on my ears and yes you can tell the difference.

gworley I don't think anybody is arguing against Youtube audio being terrible.  I agree it's greatly inferior in terms of audio quality, and perhaps also in terms of music availability / selection.  However the point of this topic is to address the fact there is currently *no* way to listen to *only* Youtube-based audio if one wants, for those who do not want to use Spotify or sign up for an account.  Forcing everybody to use Spotify is silly.  Youtube is free to all, even if it does suck.  So as an absolute fallback, it should be made available as a streaming source to everybody.

What I really want to know is if there is any possible way to play my lastfm radio/mix without installing anything. Is there any third-party sites which will play my lastfm radio/mix?

Recently I described a workaround to listen to your converted Last.fm library radio with large Spotify playlists in another thread. People who cannot install their desktop client might be able to use Deezer's webplayer instead, as they are available in many more countries than Spotify and don't afford installing a software. See this posting for a short description how to convert Spotify playlists to Deezer. You would need the help of a Spotify user hosting your converted Last.fm listening history on his account though.

This method might take a bit of time and effort, but is probably quicker than waiting for the missing fallback feature to YouTube on the new Last.fm site. ;-)

I've tried both Deezer and Libre, neither work with my employer's internet settings. The only one that I've had any success with so far is Jamendo.

There is another workaround, takes too long but you could use youtube to play your music.

  1. Convert your last.fm library to csv http://benjaminbenben.com/lastfm-to-csv/
  2. Open it in excel or google docs and copy like 600 songs
  3. Paste them here, to create a spotify playlist http://spotlistr.herokuapp.com/#/search/textbox
  4. And here http://www.playlistbuddy.com/ you could convert your spotify playlist into youtube playlist (with a 200 songs limit)
I have converted some songs using this method and works very nice

It's a very stupid and annoying thing must do all the above things in order to play music like we did in the previous last.fm design, the redesign lost the website focus which was listening to music, that's a shame.

Right now i stopped using last.fm and now i'm using Deezer and Youtube

With the tool at http://benjaminbenben.com/lastfm-to-csv/ keeps stopping around page 160.

Actually when last.fm started, its goal was to keep track of what tracks/artists that you listened to and to make friends based upon musical taste so that you might be exposed to new music/artisits.

I'm thinking about building a web app (nothing to install) that will replace the original last.fm web-based player that streamed music from YouTube. It will use the feed from your stations; for example, here's mine: http://www.last.fm/player/station/user/skeftomai/mix

Would you be interested in using that if I did make it? Anyone else?

I'm thinking of using Material Design for this. Here are examples:

http://material-ui.com/#/
https://material.angularjs.org/latest/#/

So it may or may not be needing design. But I will definitely let you know if needed.

Also, for anyone else interested, I'm thinking of using React and webpack for this (for my own learning experience). I could just use jQuery, but I'd rather use the latest technologies. I'll host this as an open source project on Github.

It will be a couple weeks before I can start on this, as I have another project in the pipeline right now.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Player changes from YouTube to Spotify at random intervals when switching songs, ....

Player changes from YouTube to Spotify at random intervals when switching songs, and can get into a state that requires a browser restart (Some message about unavailable service or other) although this state is less frequent now. This is not limited to a single browser, happens with chrome and edge. I can't get anything to work with Firefox.
Seems also sometimes I can simply close Spotify and it continues playing with YouTube as long as I don't get into the unavailable state.

p.s. I don't mind the site changes, but what made me love using this site is being able to listen to music using YouTube. I don't particularly like Spotify, so pretty please implement the default player option!! it mite even resolve the problems i'm having :)

If you just need to download them, you can go into each individual song page and under Buy This track on the right, there should be a link for Download via Last.fm.
