Levi 501 - bad quality product, bad quality service

Bought a pair of 501's via the online store around 1 year ago. They developed worn patches in the crotch area. They've not been worn every day, maybe once a week at most. I noticed the worn patches at the beginning of December 2009 and am still trying to reach a resolution at the end of January 2010.

I cannot return them to a local store as they are not stocked in store due to the size (36 inside leg), so I was told to call "consumer relations" by the store in Milton Keynes. CR told me I need to contact "Germany" where online purchases are handled.

I called Germany, they said I need to send the jeans back to them for "evaluation", but that this would be easy as they would send me a UPS label and all I'd need to do is call them and arrange for a collection.

At my cost it would appear? I attempted to arrange the collection, but I'd been sent an "invalid" label, so contacted Germany again and am still awaiting my label 2 weeks later almost.

I've had far less trouble with jeans at half the price of Levis. I think this will be the last time I buy a pair.

  • Hello Levi Friends: I have worn levi's since I was a kid growing up in Southern Cal. in the 60's. We would buy them in the basement at the Miller Outpost store in Ontario. We would always pre-wash them. To make a long story short, I have purchased one pair of shorts and four pair of jeans this past year (2011). The shorts ripped the ass out. Two pairs of the jeans ripped out at the rear pockets and belt loops and last week a pair ripped out in the ass in public. I'm 5' 11" and weigh 210 lbs. with a small ass. I believe we should all join together either thru. Change.org or do as Molly Katchpole did with B of A to get our quality back. Love my Levi's. Sincerely, Paul H. Also I did not prewash

  • Hi Paul

Thanks for reaching out to us. I am sorry about your disappointing experience with our product. We are committed to product quality and consumer satisfaction. We guarantee all of our products against any material or manufacturing defects (aside from normal wear and tear). I do recommend that you first attempt to return your product to the store where it was originally purchased, simply because this should provide you with the quickest resolution. If that’s not an option, please contact our Consumer Returns Department for help: 1-800-USA-LEVI.

    Thanks,
    Rosie C.

  • Rosie,

This is the zillionth time you are apologizing, but I have yet to find a single customer who was compensated. I contacted your customer service department, only to find that I am supposed to send my Levi's back at my own expenses, with no guarantee whatsoever that I will ever see my money back.

Unless you can give people here a solid guarantee that they will get their money back, I would appreciate if you could stop lying and be honest about Levi's bad quality, bad reputation and horrible customer service.

    Go!

  • Hi Eezacque

We do offer prepaid mailing labels in circumstances when shipping expenses will cause a financial hardship. We also will reimburse for shipping expenses in cases where there is a quality or manufacturer's defect found after inspection. If you express that you would like a prepaid mailing label or to be reimbursed for shipping costs, the agent will accomidate you. We do offer a generous quality guarantee on all of our products, however we cannot promise a merchandise exchange without actually seeing and inspecting the product.

Furthermore, it is my responsibility to respond to customers that have questions and need assistance. If you do not find the information I provide helpful, that is fine but I have been able to help other customers and will continue to do so on this site.

  • About half a year ago, your colleague Diana told me that "Unfotunately, our Levi's(R) guarantee does not work as such". No mailing label, no reimburse, just a blunt refusal. In the meantime, my Levi's looked more like a skirt, being totally open in the groin area, so I gave up and trashed them.

Stop lying about it: Levi's quality is far below par, and despite all of your nice talk, you are leaving your customers in the cold. Go home.

  • I’m pissed and pissed
I bought two pair of 501’s 6 months ago from a reputable store in Colorado. Both pair are desinigrating as we speak. One pair has so many tears in the seams (crotch and pocket) that they are unwearable and not repairable. I remember buying levi’s in the 80’s and 90’s and they would last for years and YEARS. What happened?? Then I started looking around the internet and found this blog. I know most levi wearing Americans are wondering what happened to one of our most famous and durable products.?? How could levi’s be crappy?

My question: when is someone at Levi going to stand up and take notice of the product issues that are plaguing their jeans.? This is only one forum of many that I have seen that have a number of complaints regarding failure of seams and inadequate durability of material. So far every response from rosie and her co-workers has been right out of the customer service textbook. Adequate? Sure. I called the customer service hotline and they were cooperative. Doesn't change the fact that their jeans are not worth the money charged.

Why doesn’t anyone just say (like a president or CEO or VP of quality assurance) “yeah we have some problems and we are fixing them, here is what we found so far.” Instead we all get a “thank you for your communication and here is the number to customer service.” then use an excuse that "levis are made in many countries blah blah blah"........ No one admits to anything.

Everyone is fighting to stop counterfeit merchandise from being sold. I have never bought counterfeit things because of the quality of the product primarily. Now there is very little difference in counterfeit –vs-authentic clothing. I thought these levis might be fakes. Nope they are not.... But maybe I should buy counterfeit because I can get the same quality for a whole lot cheaper. When are Americans gonna learn...cut quality, outsource, and eventually you will eventually lose loyal customers.

Mike Hudson "once a loyal levi customer........no more"
    • I agree with everything you said! My husband has been wearing Levi's jeans since the early seventies and they used to last forever. The last few pairs he bought have all ripped out at the back pocket and the belt loops keep coming off. What's the deal? It is so disappointing to have a brand that we've loved for years being made now with such poor quality. Guess we'll have to make a brand change until Levi's comes to their senses.

Rosie, I would like for you to address the "growing jeans" issue. I can send you twenty pairs of Levi's that I have purchased over the past five years that start out in the morning one size and by noon have become two sizes larger.

I've worn Levi's over 50 years and have never experienced the type of product we as we the public are receiving as Levi's in the 2000's.

Please find me a pair of Ladies Levi's that are 100% cotton. The don't exist. I wear jeans for work and I must have jeans that stand the test of time. Levi's at this point don't even stand the test of hours. I purchased a pair of 515 Levi's at Tractor Supply less than two weeks ago. The fit great in the store and they fit great when I left for work in them the next morning. By noon on the same day they were at least two sizes larger, the waist had grown at least three inches. I washed and tried them twice more only to have the same snug jeans in the morning become a different size jean by noon. The last time I tried was today.

I have the same issue with 580's and the new 550's. 550's were perfect. Durable, fit good, held their shape and while yes, the area around the pockets and belt loops has been weak for many years now, at least the 550's didn't grow until they too were switched over to this miracle growing material.

Most people would have given up by now but I am loyal to Levi's - or I was. Carhartts are durable, they have replaced Levi's as the premier brand of work jeans but they don't fit well. Wranglers also have overtaken Levi's as a quality brand but again they don't have the fit of Levi's.

Looking over this blog that dates well over two years it does appear that Levi's does not care what its customers have to say. Its very sad to see another American Icon gone down the drain.

Thanks for your time Rosie. I hope that Levi's understands the position they have placed you in.

  • Rosie,

After reading all these posts, I decided to take a pair of 514s to the outlet store I had purchased them from about 1.5 years ago. They ripped in the crotch and at both back pockets about 6 months ago. When I walked in, all 5 employees hovered around the counter as I was explaining the situation. They eventually gave me a totally perplexed look and went on to say that the lifetime warranty for Levi's ended last November and they would not exchange the jeans given the defect. Is this true?

I told them about this forum and they, again, thought I was crazy and said they had never seen that problem on Levi's jeans, which I can solely attest to on 4 pairs of Levi's which I have purchased over the last 5 years. I'm just wondering what I should do because it is a tad disconcerting when you and your website suggest that consumers should try returning the product to the store first, and then the store has no clue what you are talking about.

On a side note, about a month or two ago, I purchased 2 more pairs of 514s: one came with a sewing defect in the lower left leg; the other came with almost the identical issue in the lower left leg along with a rub mark and hole near the right leg pocket. I went on the website to try to get my order number, (as I don't have the original email or packing slip) and the site tells me that I have no recent orders.....What should I do? (I really don't want to go back to the outlet store only for them to tell me how wrong I am again.)

    Kind regards,
    Scott Andrews

  • Hi. I'm from Malaysia and less than a month ago bought 2 pairs of jeans, one 501 and one 505. The 501 started to rip although small at inner thigh near crotch area while the 505 have thread coming off at the zipper. I've only washed them twice and that was by hand not by machine. I've the store where I bought the jeans if the jeans have warranty but was told there were none. In 2010 also I bought 2 pairs of jeans from an outlet in York, UK. After one year holes started to appear on the legs. It didn't bother me much at that time although a bit upset because I thought that was the quality of outlet jeans untill I found this forum and realized even jeans from Levi's store also face the same problem. Help me please.

    Shahir,
    Malaysia.

Update: Rosie is awesome. I received my replacement jeans today.Contacting Rosie was effortless and she was very helpful in getting the problem resolved. I had two pairs of jeans with issues; holes at the inner back pockets on one; and a sewing defect on a new pair.

After having a less-than-desirable experience at an outlet store, Rosie made up for it all. Thanks for some kick-ass customer service, Rosie!

So you contacted Rosie and she sent you another pair of crap jeans that are going to wear out and fall apart as quickly as your last pairs. Big deal. These current versions of Levi's are an absolute joke and a complete insult to consumers. The denim material is so thin it is a complete farce when considering the prices they charge.

  • I might as well add my voice to those who can't believe how diminished the quality of 501s is now. I've worn them for 30 years.

I bought three pairs a year or so ago, two from one company and the third from another. One pair, made in Mexico, was so ridiculously small I couldn't button them. Another pair feels like cheesecloth. The third pair is grossly oversized.

I have been very curious how a contracted manufacturer gets to alter not only weight of fabric but fit too. Does Levi's not establish and enforce consistent standards?

I know this isn't unique to them either. I have a bunch of g-star jeans that fit differently, depending on the site of their manufacture. Ditto for a t-shirt company I've bought from for years. The most consistent jeans I've bought are Lucky. Unless they changed recently, all of their jeans are made in America.

Ms.Rosie is a seasoned personnel doing purely lip sympathy to aggrieved customers.
She is yet to understand that LEVIS is LEVIS because of its customer base, but by ignoring and humiliating the customers she is cutting the stem / branch on which LEVIS the brand is seated.
She is very selective in attending the complaints- beware if you are from under developed or developing country. there is strong discrimination.
She is good at putting forth strange logic for not attending the complaints, as in one of the matter she replied- Sorry , I cannot attend your problem because of distance. "Surprising isnt it- LEVIS can cover all the distance to do business in that developing country because of the lucrative market but when it comes to attending the customer grievance she has been trained to use that very same distance as a hurdle. Customer has sent the packet to the head quarter vide express post and is still expecting a reply from Ms.rosie"

  • I’m Mad as hell
    1
This message is for Levi's CEO Chip Bergh. Mr. Bergh the Levi brand is being driven into the ground by cheap material and shoddy workmanship. I have been a customer for 35 years, so am very aware of the rapid decline of Levi products over the last several years. Do not waste any money for consultants like Accenture, I will inform you of problems and solutions for free.

    Problems
    1. The denim is absurdly thin.
    2. The fit is inconsistent from pair to pair.
    3. The sewing of material is shoddy at best.
    3. The waist band rolls.
    4. Rather then get better with age these jeans tear/rip and fall apart.

    Solutions
    1. Go back to the materials and quality workmanship of 25 years ago.
    2. Enforce consistent Quality Control. Inconsistency will kill any business.
    3. Charge fair and reasonable prices.

You are insulting and alienating loyal customers with this garbage.
Are you going to let this American Icon end up another second rate brand sold in
    Kmart?

...they are milking the brand by doling out licence to all tom dick and harry who in return to fleece the maximum in shortest time are least bothered about the quality and brand reputation."

Is this true?? It certainly would explain everything. So Levis sells the brand name to a company and that company can alter fit and material to its liking?

And yet there are lots and lots of positive reviews on Levis' own site. Do you think they are editing responses or does this have to do with customer age? I imagine that a 20-something has never worn the original jeans.

The t-shirt manufacturer I mentioned above told me that his customers now absolutely prefer thinner fabrics, but that he has a huge problem with consistency of fit by manufacturers in other countries.

  • I'm one of those old guys (mid-40s) that has been buying 501's since I was a boy. They would last forever, it was almost impossible to destroy them and they fit well. Over the last 5-10 years, EVERY pair I've purchased has ripped at the crotch after only moderate use. Granted I'm fatter, but they are sized appropriately. As a consumer, I will now be looking for a replacement brand. I'm not interested in an apology, or replacements. Just go back to the old ways of making them, it's very simple. Shame on you Levi's!!! You had the whole (jeans) world in your hands!!!

  • I’m Pissed
I'm 30 years old and from Australia. I can sympathise with all the comments, Levis if you are listening all we want is to buy a damn pair of jeans that last and fit! Just last night I went into Myer (one of our large retailers) and tried on 3 pairs of bootcut 503's. All 3 pairs fit differently even though they were marked as 35' x 32'. One pair had the right leg about an inch longer than the left. Denim paper thin. Just absolute @#$@ quality. Worst of all they are priced at $AUD109.99 locally.

I'm off them for good. Levi's I am more than happy to pay for consistent quality. Bring your manufacturing back in house and make these in the USA like you used to and get some damned quality control procedures in place!

  • Well, it's a few months later, and my last pair ripped at the crotch-- about a year old and seldom worn because of the lousy fit. I have literally never had a pair of jeans just rip, and these were not anywhere near tight.

Funny thing, though. In the last couple weeks it's been obvious to me that a LOT of guys got Levis for Christmas, including a few friends. I asked some how they fit and each of them said the same thing -- actual fit was okay but the cotton felt like cheesecloth.

Cal as a kid.....I just had the top botton fall apart on a pair that was less than 2 months old....rips in the crotch.....belt loops tearing off....rips at the rear pockets.....what's the deal with the new location for the interior white tag at the waistline??...It wants to stick out between the pants and your shirt!!......I think I remember reading some time ago that the fabric isnt really denim any more....And by the end of the day the pants do seem to have grown 2 sizes....You can try on 3 differnt sets in the store that are the same size and they all fit differently...THE WORST PART OF ALL THIS IS THAT LEVIS THINKS THESE PANTS ARE WORTH $60 A PAIR.....I'm afraid that eezaque is right...it's time to stop supporting Levis.

I have had the same problems. I actually bought 5 pairs of Levis 501 jeans from Kohls department store. How can all but one pair have the belt loop to become detached from the jeans after hardly any wear. The loops are sewn into the thin material of the pants so it's no wonder this is happening but is definitely something that should have been corrected prior to manufacturing. Doesn't seem like common sense. Very disappointed. These jeans are not cheap either $40-50 bucks per pair. Very unhappy customer.

  • When it comes to buying jeans I've pretty much only ever bought Levis 501s although for the last 10 years I've never worn jeans at all. None the less through my teens and 20's I've worn 501s so much that I reckon I can spot Levi denim without seeing the labels, buttons or rivets, so when I bought a pair of Levis last year I was pleased to find that THEY HADN'T CHANGED AT ALL!!!. Same weight, same look and feel to the denim, same blue colour and exactly the same look from the stone wash effect. So when I decided I needed a new pair of trousers (pants) I decided to buy more 501s and again, THEY WERE EXACTLY THE SAME as the long lasting jeans I remembered from my youth.

HOWEVER - a month or so later I decided to buy yet another pair and got them online. This time though they immediately didn't look right. The blue was off, the texture of the denim wasn't quite right and neither was the feel so I immediately got on to Google and found out about how to spot a fake and then started to scrutinize the jeans I had just bought.

The conclusion was they that were completely genuine. All the tags were right, the registered trade marks were in the right place, the rivets were stamped as they should be, the tab and pocket hadn't been tampered with and the product numbers were correct. The difference was that my first two pairs were made in Haiti, the third pair was made in Egypt.

The fit is OK so I'll wear them but they have the feel of cheap supermarket jeans so I doubt they will last very long. In the future I'll have to be more vigilant when it comes to buying Levis. My advice would be that if you have a good pair of Levis, note where they were made and make sure you check the label for the country of manufacture before you buy any. As I mentioned, the ones made in Haiti seem fine to me but from my experience I'd suggest avoid buying any that have been made in Egypt.

  • The post from Chris Toast seems suspisious.........The comments and experiences on this site are very consistant with each other....Why does his buck that trend?....I have only purchased my 501's locally from Dillard's, J.C. Penny, or Sears, pending sales......Levis has not used thier original denim for at least 10-15 yrs, that is very evident to anyone who wore them in the 70's and 80's........very suspisious......

  • Sorry mate - I'm not sure how anyone would gain from me misrepresenting my experiences in the way I have presented them here. The denim in the pair of 501's made in Haiti is exactly how I remember it from 10-15-20-25+ years ago.
I can't vouch for how well they will age in the long term as the first of the three pairs I've bought recently is only 12-18 months old, but so far they seem to wearing nicely.

I'd also like to address Randall Smiths post where he says

Quote: "How can all but one pair have the belt loop to become detached from the jeans after hardly any wear. The loops are sewn into the thin material of the pants so it's no wonder this is happening "

I suggest that he 'may' have suffered with the same problem as myself over the last decade or so - I'm not sure if you use this term in the US but in the UK we call it 'middle age spread' (otherwise know as an expanding waist line). I've just compared my current pair of 40x32 501s with an old pair (15+ years old approx) of 34x32 501s and I note there are 5 belt loops on the 34" pair sewn into areas of the jeans that are doubled up. The 40" pair have 7 belt loops and 5 of them are sewn into roughly the same positions but there are two extra loops which are unavoidably sewn into single weaker layer of denim.

Here are some pictures comparing the two pairs of jeans along with the extra belt loop.

I haven't taken a picture of the 501s made in Egypt as they are in need of a wash. My main complaint regarding this pair other than the fact that they look cheap is that they don't have that soft comfortable feel that "proper" 501s do after they have been worn for a few hours. In this case I agree, the denim just isn't the same. The answer to finding a good pair of Levis may just be to shop around and check out different pairs of jeans made in different factories.

    Just my opinion - YMMV

  • Hi Everyone,

I posted on this forum a year or so ago after my 4th pair of Levis 501 sta dark tore on both sides of the inner thigh near the crotch. This resulted in Jeans that looked perfect while standing up, but as soon as I sat down there were white frayed holes on my inner thighs that got larger and worse until it was so embarrassing I had to throw them out. On average, despite being sized perfectly, I was getting 9 months per pair before the fabric wore so thin they split!

To get to my point, I have old pairs of 501s from the mid 90s that are still going strong despite losing most of their colour. In comparison, it is obvious that the modern Levis are a different denim fabric, most definitely a looser weave and thinner... my 15 year old Levis were thicker and felt more robust than the new pairs!

My conclusion, which mirrors many on this site, is that Levis has reduced the quality of their product, putting profit maximization and production cost reduction first. Levis are no longer quality 'working man' jeans, but mainly fashion products that are only meant to last a short time before the next fashion change in their colour and styling... so a year, maybe two. As they cost about £65-85 in the UK (ca US$110) this is a high premium, but those younger consumers who don't know the previous quality are oblivious. Remember, we 'oldies' are dying off (sorry to be cynical), so the new consumer market must be made and it represents an opportunity to change expectations and make more money. Naturally, I don't like it and as a loyal customer, am very disappointed, but it's pretty obvious that something like this is going on, especially after reading many of your posts.

I can say however despite the declining quality of the product, that I have been impressed with Levis Customer Service. Rosie helped me exchange a pair of Levis bought in the US in the UK that turned out to be defective. So, despite everything I want to say thank you to Rosie for her help and hope that the message of getting back to the better quality somehow gets through to the Levis Corporate Execs who myopically have put short-term profit ahead of the product. Thank you for your help Rosie.

All the best to you all,

    Jude

  • Dear all,

I am writing to share a similar ' disappointing' experience with the household name Levis. I bought two pairs of 501 a few months ago, and despite following all the recommended procedures for washing etc... both pairs already look old and worn out. One pair has undergone ridiculous seize changes! I discussed this peculiar concern with older men that were my age in the seventies ( I am 25) and they confirmed that the quality of recent productions' is not comparable to what Levis used to do. Levis is no better than H&M ! I am not asking anything here, because it is just pointless and ridiculous. My point is, stop buying Levis !

  • It's gotten worse not better, I have 3 brand new pairs of jeans the belt loop fell off of.. I see they have changed to black thread vs. the gold, thought maybe they fixed the problem, but that made it way worse... All three pairs fell of in less than 5 uses each... levis are JUNK!!

And totally agree with the poster who said they stretch out big time.. Use to be able to wear them to my desk job 2 days in a row, they are so bad now they sag all over the place by lunch time...
