I’m disappointed

Levi's Jeans tearing, forming holes at back pockets

I've worn Levi's my entire life and have also noticed, along with many other people it seems, that the quality of the product is just not the same. There is a very serious issue going on with Levi's jeans and tears at the back pockets. So serious, that a simple Google search yields quite a bit of complaints regarding the same issue.

I bought 3 pairs of Levi's less than a year ago, 2 are already forming holes in that dreaded "back pocket area". I've decided that instead of throwing them out and buying another pair (like I usually do), this is absolutely unacceptable. I would appreciate it if someone from Levi's could not only let me know what they can do for me.. but I would also like someone from Levi's to please explain what is being done about this issue. I really, REALLY, would like to know whether this issue is ever going to be fixed, or if I will need to start looking at other brands.

Thanks.

  • Hi Armando,

I'm sorry about your experience with the jeans. I want to assure you that all of our products are guaranteed against manufacturer and material defects.

I recommend you first take the jeans back to the store of purchase and ask for an exchange. If that doesn't work, please call us at 1-800-USA-LEVI and press 3 and our rep can give you instructions for sending them in.

We are working to fix this problem. We appreciate your help by bringing them back instead of throwing them out so we can study the jeans and find a solution.

    All the best,

    Charlie (filling in for Rosie)

    • I'm seeing the same canned response "sorry you had trouble" "we are working to resolve this" Well it's 2013 now. I've seen a multitude of similar stories dated 2008,9,10,11, each year up until now. WHAT IS GOING ON?
(note this is a post on LEE not Levi but I'm seeing trouble with both brands now)

I did exchange mine and the exchanged pair is also disintegrating after only weeks of wear.

copy of my post I'm putting EVERYWHERE:
OMG! This is the exact reason I am here. Kohl's + Lee Jeans... For Christmas, I got some money and I used part of it to buy a $40 pair of Lee Jeans from Kohl's. The back pocket seam closest to the middle of the butt just self destructed, and a belt loop just detatched. That was only 1.5~2 weeks of wash and wear! I exchanged for an exact copy and now my right seam up near the hip is splitting. Well not the seam but the actual material behind the seam is disintegrating.
    • Guys levis have a lifetime warranty, if the rip just take them to the store you purchased from and the should give store credit for your Levis, they know the warranty

  • I have worn Levis 501 jeans since the 1960's. They used to be marketed as the jeans invented during the gold rush in California for their durability. For all my decades of wearing them, virtually every day, they were tough and lasted forever, until the last couple of years. In the last 12 months I have returned five pairs of 501's "to the store of purchase" because the denim fabric has torn in the crotch. Now two of the five NEW replacement pairs are torn in the crotch and need to be replaced. To be clear, I am normal size and my usage has been normal--around town, hiking, fishing, etc. Most recently while fishing, I stepped up on a boulder and the crotch fabric of an almost new pair split open about four inches. (That was the second pair where that happened) There should be no doubt that Levi jeans are not of the same quality that earned them your and my (nearly 50 years) of brand loyalty, and the company knows it. Heck, if 80% of the people whose Levi's fall apart within 12 months throw them away and go right out and buy another pair, it's great for the bottom line.

I called 1-800-USA-LEVI about returning the recent two torn pairs to them, and was told a mailing label would be mailed to me within 6-10 days for return. It never showed up. Another call was made several weeks later to follow up, and I was told the information was in the computer, the label had been ordered, but "for some reason was never mailed". Customer Service.........

After nearly 50 years of wearing Levi's, the product quality decisions made by this company has directed this unimportant loyal customer to the competitors, who still value durability and their customers.

  • I have 3 pair of Levi's that I have bought over the last five to six years or less. I wear the jeans more for casual use than anything else. Each pair has holes next to the corners of both back pockets. These holes developed between the first and second year use. By the time the holes were in the jeans I didn't have a receipt or they were to old to return. What is happening to the jean material to cause these problems?

I too have noticed that in the last so many years my jeans get holes on the corners of the pockets and they tear very easy. I have worn levis all of my life and they used to last. Now they rip, have entirely different textures, and the sizing and cuts vary a lot. In other words, two different pairs of jeans of the same number, are cut much different. I used to be able to just buy my size and my number without trying them on. Now I have to try on every pair. I guess it matters what part of the world they come from.

I was on levis website and you can get some made in the U.S. still- but they will cost you $200! What a joke.

I am currently trying other brands and types of pants because I am sick of buying around 3 or 4 pair every 4 or 5 months. That is no exaggeration.

Yet another great ex-American product gone for greed.

  • Unfortunately folks, this is the world we live in. You can make lots of money if you charge the same (or more) for a product, but make it overseas, where labor and materials are cheap (and very often poor quality). That is, so long as people continue to buy the products. I haven't bought Levis jeans in a couple of years now because the denim is paper thin and rips easily. Also, they all have a funky "fashionable" bleached out finish. I wear Carthartts mostly now, nice thick denim, strong stitching lasts many years.

I am glad to know I am not the only one having this problem! I have lost 5 pairs of Levi's over the past 2 years! They all rip starting from the inside corner of the back pocket and then rip down from 4-14 inches!!

My last pair was a newer pair that I wore to my 2nd day on a new job!! I was horrified when they ripped! I had to leave work and go buy new ones (WRANGLERS, I have learned my lesson with Levi's) on my break!

This is not a fit or size problem. I have 2-3 different sizes and tight or baggy they rip the same! I purchased them all from Macy's, and they will not return if they have been worn or washed. So, that leaves me stuck with lots of expensive jeans with rips in them that can't be worn.

  • I'm in the UK and have found this site by Googling 'Levis tearing' because I am having exactly the same problem and it has cost me a fortune.
I have 4 pairs of Levi 572s and EVERY SINGLE pair has ripped and gone through at the knees.
I don't even wear these jeans to do hard physical work, I'm a stay-at-home Mum!
One brand new pair which cost about £75 (about $120) ripped at the knee within 8 weeks of owning them and wearing them perhaps once a week.
Now that it happened to my 4th pair I'm not going to leave it alone.
I'd like to know an address I can write to because these jeans are extremely expensive and they are not fit for purpose.
The galling thing is that 20 years ago they used to last. I wore a pair for years in the 1990s. And my Mother's pair of White Levis from the 1970s is still in mint condition.
My main gripe is that I made the decision to spend a huge amount of money on Levis instead of half the price on a fashionable High Street brand (or even $20 on a supermarket pair) and the cheap ones would definitely have lasted.
    I'm really angry about this.

  • I urge you all to take the time to contact the Levis Rep. at the above e-mail address. They did replace my jeans, after I sent my ripped pair to them.
HOWEVER, I was frustrated at having to pay for the shipping of my torn jeans...Around $11.00!

PLEASE demand to reimbursed for the shipping and see what they will do for you...

  • I’m Angry
I've had three pairs of Levi's 550's rip out now at the right back pocket inside top corner. Two of the pairs of jeans were less than a year old and one pair was only worn twice before this happened!
Fortunately the place where I purchased the jeans (JC Penny) will exchange the one pair of new jeans but I'm out of luck on the other two pairs.
I've been wearing Levi's jeans for 40+ years and in the last couple of years have noticed how poorly they seem to be made.
Levi's please fix this problem or it's time for me to find a new brand of jeans.

I am another lifetime Levi's wearer, I am 53 and have worn Levi's almost exclusively but recently have also had this problem. The quality and durability of Levi's has simply gone way downhill recently while the price has gone the other way to record highs.

It's a shame to see a product I have loved for its quality lose its reputation and the durability which made it become know for its quality.

I guess it may be time to look for another brand if Levi's no longer wants to be the rugged quality brand that it was and which it built it's name.

  • I am experiencing the same issue in South Africa, 3 pears of Levi's, which used to last years, less than 1 year in are tearing on the knee and ripping at the back pocket. Interestingly the Levi website says they will only accept returns on jeans purchased less than 6 months ago:
    Copied from SA Levis website:
We will be happy to exchange any products based on genuine quality complaints provided that:
    a) the product has not been altered and that the complaint is not due to negligence or normal wear and tear. The determining of the validity of quality complaints remains at the sole discretion of Levi Strauss South Africa.
    b) You return the product within 6 months after the date of purchase; and
    c) You are in possession of a valid proof of purchase

Clrealy they only back their product for 6 months, in addition to this, why should i have proof of purchase if they clearly show they are Levi's?

10 years of supporting Levi about to expire.

  • I’m done.
I started this thread more than a year ago and I thought I'd give an update since I keep getting emails every time someone replies to this thread. First, let me explain that this is not the first time I've had this exact same issue with their jeans. I had never bothered to figure out how refunds or replacements worked because I never really had the time. I would just keep buying pair after pair because I thought that was easier, rather than going through the time consuming process of contacting Levi's. Well now not only do I have the time, but I'm also hurting a little more financially (aren't we all?) and simply can't afford to keep throwing my money away. So I called the number they gave me and talked to someone. I felt like they tried to dismiss the whole thing and told me to just take the pants back to the store. When I told this person that that was not an option (no receipt, worn and washed) they gave me an address where I could ship them to and perhaps get a replacement. Here are some issues I have about what I was told:

I am required to pay for shipping.
Any person who spends the amount of money that Levi's charges for their products, should not have to spend even more money for shipping to return a defective product. The customer is not responsible for the declining quality of your products, Levi's is.

I was told that I may or MAY NOT get a replacement.
So let's say someone goes through the trouble of getting these things shipped. Levi's will "take a look" at the pants and determine whether or not they want to bother replacing them. Is the customer supposed to just trust this company to do the right thing? Especially after said customer trusted the brand, only to find out their definition of "quality" is much different now, than say.. 20 years ago? If I am to spend even more money on shipping, I expect the defective product to be replaced. No questions asked. This is not a "wear and tear" issue. There are many people out there complaining about this very same issue.

I was told it was possible that I might not have the pairs of pants returned (not that I want them since they're useless, but still).
This one just makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Why even bother in the first place? Maybe that's exactly what Levi's wants.

So if I understand this correctly, Levi's wants us to pay extra and jump through hoops to have a defective product replaced. And they might replace it, or they might not... We're just supposed to wait and trust these good folks to do the right thing. And on top of all this nonsense, Levi's will not even have the decency to ship back the defective jeans if they don't feel like doing the right thing? How and where would this ever make any sense? This is such a disturbing trend with companies nowadays. These are tough times, and as customers, we are going to be a little extra careful about where we spend our money. Isn't it pretty much straight forward? Customers will keep throwing money at you as long as you keep them happy.

So anyway, I've had to switch to another brand of jeans (was a loyal customer for 20+ years). I have those 2 pairs of Levi's with the holes still sitting in my closet. In the past, I've just worn them with the holes only to have them rip wide open eventually. Suffice to say, I'm not going to wear them and have no use for them anymore. I tried to work out how to get a replacement only to find that Levi's has an unreasonable policy that is probably used to discourage customers from going through with it. It's too much trouble and I am done. I will not pay for shipping, hope you find them defective enough, and not put up with the disrespect of you not even shipping them back to me if you wont stand by your product. I feel like I've put way too much effort into this whole issue than I should have to. I'm not going to call any more numbers, explain myself all over again, or do anything on my part. I shouldn't have to beg a company to keep me as a customer.
    • Hi Armando
I am sorry about your jeans and not getting the assistance you needed. Unfortunatly I do not believe you were given accurate information when you called. I would like to personally help you to ensure you do get the assitance you need, please contact me directly at RCayetano@levi.com.

    • I'm having the exact same problem with my Levi's getting holes on the back pockets. This has been going on for several years now, but like Armando said, "times are different now". I purchased 6 pairs, three from Amazon and 3 from JCPenny, and one pair had a hole after wearing only 3 times. Two of the other pair are getting thin and I'm sure it's just a matter of wearing them a few more times before they too have holes. I no longer have the receipts so taking them back to the store is not an option. From what i've read here and from other websites, Levis has known about this defect for a while now. I guess most people, like myself, just throw the jeans away and buy new ones :(

Kind of sad that an iconic label such as Levis is content with putting out a substandard!

Called the number listed on the web site and got what I'd call a run around. Not sure I'm ready to spend more money shipping my jeans back to levis to have them decide they don't want to replace them. I actually sent you an email on April 5th but haven't received a response. I would love to see someone at Levi's answer this for me:

Why is it that the Levi's I have from 15 years ago are still going strong, and anything I buy in the last 5 years tears along the inseam, seat, or pocket within 6 months?

Cheap material is my thought. I have 2 pairs of pants side by side, and you can FEEL the heft of the pants made in the 90s. The stuff made now is so thin you could read braille through it. I would pay $60 for a pair of GOOD jeans that HOLD UP without question. But at this point we are all better off buying $10 walmart jeans as everything lasts 6 months now.

  • I’m annoyed!
Atleast you guys in the US have a phone number you can call.....Ive been searching for a number, email address ANYTHING to complain about my jeans here in the UK but i have found nothing!!

I got my very first pair of Levi's for my 21st birthday in July last year.
They were around £70 ($110), However in March i noticed the fabric between the thighs has started wear away and eventually a hole is going to appear.
Im disgusted and I feel really let down. Considering that all I have heard from friends and family is that Levi jeans are the best to buy (as one of my family members has had his for almost 10 years).
Prior to this, i bought some from Topshop (a leading UK womens/mens store) for £40 ($63) and they lasted me 3 years!!!
I have tried to look on the Levi website to find an email adress to complain but there is not one.
Again, i cannot re itterate how dissapointed I am. Never buying from Levi's again.

  • Amazing.. I have been a Levi fan since I was about 13... it's the only jeans I buy! Unfortunately.. It has been very disappointing that the quality is just not the same as it use to be. I go through several pair a year.... they tend to wear out around the pockets, a hole creates & the next thing I know.. I have a coworker telling me that I have a rip in my pants & they can see my backside...

The quality is going down & the price keeps going up!

I currently have about 5 pair of levi's sitting in my closet with the rips.. it happened to me again this past week as I was wearing my favorite pair of Levi capri's & a friend actually (again) stuck her finger in the rip to share with me that my backside was showing... How embarrassing.

Is there a way to have them replaced?

  • I’m sad for the USA!
Texas Jeans are made here in the USA with 100% USA denim. They don't cost as much as you would think either and in most cases less than you pay for Levis. Don't pass judgement on the jeans based on the models they use. I started buying them after all my Levis started ripping In the back by the pockets, above and below the knee without any signs of wear. They are all made in different places one said "Made in Lesotho". Where is that? I have 8 pairs of Levis I bought over the last 3 years only one pair didn't blow open in the knee. It did however wear out there and it is my newest pair. I bought them unwashed shrink to fit 501's because I thought maybe it was something they were washing it with that was causing them to rot the cotton. I want Levis like they used to be. I know that isn't going to happen. Lets open our eyes. We're reading the proof. Besides the quality issues, buying Levis doesn't put Americans to work!

  • I buy levis for work. To be clear, I work on a train and have a lot of stepping up to ladders and crouching. I can't seem to make a pair last a month (not exaggerating) without tearing out the crotch. I sew them back up over and over and after six months to a year I get holes in the knees (sometimes back pockets too), so I throw them out. I'm offcially looking for a "true" american brand that is built with quality and will last. I have quit buying levis for work and daily use and do not recommend them to others, in fact, I warn against them. It is truly a shame in my opinion that a great American company like levis brand has become what it has today

  • I’m frustrated
Bought my son 3 pair of 501's. Washed them in cold water like the label says the next week and all 3 came back with white streaks and one pair even tore. Contacted Levi's and they had us mail them in (at their cost for shipping). They apologized and sent 3 more pair to him. My son actually wore the pants for months without washing them because he was afraid the same thing would happen. I finally sent them to the cleaners and they got ruined again. I sent Levi's an email with this same info and here is what I got back:

I'm sorry. Did I miss the solution here? I don't want to keep having to send them back and get more defective pants back. Stop using cheap, defective denim and go back to the old supplier!!!!!!

  • Yes! Levi's have turned into ABSOLUTE CRAP! I've been wearing them for 40+ years and in the last five or six years they just just rip in the crotch, the knees or back pockets within a year! I've never had that problem. I still have some much old pairs that are in better shape than new ones just after a few months. Acid washed jeans are even worse!! Levi obviously knows about the problem but does jack crap about it! I'm just going to find another brand ... too bad. Sadly they probably make them this way now to appease Wallstreet so people buy more jeans, but not this guy anymore.

  • I'm having the same problems as everyone else. Holes in the corners of all pockets as well as in the crotch. Even though I love the fit, quality is what I'm after, and its obviously not in Levi's product anymore. I don't see much point in constantly complaining and having poor products replaced with more poor product. The obvious thing to do is switch to an American made quality jean that will last more than a year!

  • I have had the same problem and just emailed Levis yesterday. I am pretty pissed as well and have worn Levis for over 35 years. I have thrown away 3 pairs and just had a 4th pair rip yesterday. I have two more new pairs in the closet that I am sure will be worthless in a couple of months. I am tired of buying new jeans that I expected to be of good quality only to find they are using junk material and shoddy workmanship. Yes...please call us and ship back your pants so we can replace them. What a joke. Most of us threw them away and we shouldn't have to keep sending them back for replacements. Way to turn Americas (the world for that matter) favorite jeans into complete piles of crap.

  • I've worn Levi's for more than 30 years, and am now completely disappointed. I'm having he same problems as most posters here. Stupidly, after my last round of 3 pairs which had the belt loop failure issues after about 6 months, I bought 3 more. These have started to fail after maybe 6 uses each. What a joke. I posted a negative review on Amazon, and not surprisingly, there were numerous almost identical reviews.

  • Yes it is very sad that Levi's has let the quality of their jeans drop like this. I have been a Levi jean wearer my whole life and have worn almost exclusively Levi's since my early teens in the 70's.

But the quality is no longer what it use to be and after several disappointments I think I will be looking for another brand of jeans.

  • Has anyone found another brand that they feel is comparable to our old Levi standard of 'rugged jeans' ?

Just curious, because I am still looking, but haven't found anything (yet).

  • I’m moving on
I started this thread a long time ago and I feel like I should've responded to this then but just around to doing it. Here is my final update:

I got in touch with Rosie C. and she helped me through the entire process. I'm not sure what the first Levi's rep was trying to accomplish, but apparently I got some bad service and was lied to the first time around.

I ended up sending the pair back for absolutely free. Levi's paid for having me ship their pants back and I got 3 brand new pairs also with shipping paid for. It's been a year or so ago, and these pants have not ripped at the back pockets like the others had, but the stitching is coming off on the back pockets. I can deal with it though, but I have to say that the quality of the Levi's product is not anything near to what it was in the past. I'd like to thank Rosie C. for helping me and for having the patience of a saint here. She deserves much credit.

As far as the Levi's brand is concerned, I think I might have purchased my last pairs of pants from them. I'm happy with them resolving my issue and all, but paying this much for pants and going through all the trouble of getting them replaced, just isn't something I enjoy doing. I feel that if Levi's will ever get me to do business with them again, they will have to actually show exactly what they're going to do to upgrade the quality to what it once was, and show me they want me back as a customer and lower their prices. Until that happens, I'll have to continue purchasing other brands.

We'd love to keep throwing our money at you so feel free to let us know when you decide to go back to the great quality we all once knew and loved.

  • I’m angry
I too have this problem. I have worn levi's for 25 years and Im sick and tired of
doing this over and over. Buy a pair two weeks the back pocket is coming off or
the front mid section rips out. what a shame because I love these jeans so much
but cant keep this up at $40 a pair..

  • I purchased 505s in November. By March there was a hole in the crotch area. The rest of the jeans hardly had any wear. Macy's replaced them with no problems. But I don't want to have to return my jeans every 4 months because they develop a whole in the crotch. I am not rough on them. It's not like I do splits (if I even could) in my jeans. There is no reason why other than cheaper denim on why a hole should develop in the crotch area.

  • I’m sad about it
I have the same issue with one pair of my Levi Jeans, I dont mind the hole in the back pocket aside from I lost all my cash one day because of it.
I am having an issue with my zipper on my pair of my SLIM STRAIGHT 514s that seem to be one of a kind pair of jeans.
The funny thing is the jeans are in perfect condition except I can no longer wear them because my zipper keeps falling down.
I think the problem is, its a Levis trademark zipper and not the typical ykk. I would be happy with a new pair since they are only worn a few times a year!

  • I’m mad
I just bought three pairs of Levi 501's last week at Fred Meyer for 45 dollars each. Today is the second time I have worn this pair.....THE SECOND TIME.....and I am at work and I discover a big rip and tear at the back pocket. I have been wearing levi's for 56 years but no more. The quality is gone and the fabric is crap all while they have been raising the price. I have wasted so much money over the last few years on Levis that I have had it. I will be buying from a made in America only company in the future that uses good quality heavy denim. Levis used to last for years and it is very sad to see another classic American icon turned into third world garbage.

I had same problem with my Levi jeans which i bought from India. Levis, India has given so many laughable excuses.
    A) You have washed your jeans too many times
    B) You have Ironed your jeans too many times.
    C) Levis does not provide guarantee for cloth for more than 6 months.

Its hard to believe but Levis standards has slipped over the years and their Customer service has been all time low.

  • I’m frustrated
My son received a pair of 513's for Christmas 2013. He was wearing them for the 2nd time and the ass ripped out and they we're loose on him. I contacted Levi and they didn't know of any issues... REALLY
They said to return them to the store and I would need to follow their return policy. There is a bigger problem here from what I'm reading. It's quality something Levi has lost......
