823LM stopped working after one day

Just installed a 888LM, 828LM and 823LM yesterday, to upgrade my installation to the Internet age!  ;-)

888LM and 828LM worked like a charm, and everything is functioning properly.

823LM (remote light switch) is misbehaving though.

Worked fine yesterday.... was able to link it to both the web Dashboard and my 890MAX keyfob remote.   The switch itself also worked fine when manually activated.

I come back to it today, and there's no response at all..... no "clunk" as the internal relay switches on or off, and no green led when pressing the Learn button.  (It did all those things yesterday).

I've verified the wiring connections three times already, and I'm confident it's not a grounding or mis-wired connection.

Do I have a dead switch on my hands?   Any handy tips to reset it?   Or should I be contacting Liftmaster for a warranty replacement?

Thanks in advance!

EDIT:   Looks like it's working now!   Mea culpa.....   it seems that my house wiring is a tad bit confused on what the "Line" and "Load" connections are......  a bit of digging with a multimeter, and a bit of recovery time for the 823LM, and it seems to be working fine now.

A related technical question:  does the 823LM contain an internal battery/capacitor, that's charged from the house current?   If so, it would go a long way to explaining the behaviour I found....

  • I had the same problem among other problems.  I believe you are absolutely correct about internal capacitor/battery. I am guessing of course. However I stumbled upon a post first at Amazon then on this sight stating the same problems as you and I have stated. The poster said he connected his LM823's 7 or 8 times to get them to work. Nothing seemed to do the trick. He finally connected, got the light to work and left it on for several hours before programming. He stated he has had no problems for about a year and switches work great. Well I did exactly the same thing and low and behold they have been working great. Apparently 10 minutes is not enough time for the switches to power up wake up or whatever probably 20 minutes minimum to as long as a couple of hours to function properly.  A funny thing about this is I called Lift master and spoke with a very knowledgeable rep he told me he had never heard of that solution before and could only offer the usual distance or wired wrong or house wiring problems etc. Well I am convinced and it obviously is the answer. Keep in mind that if the line and load wiring are backwards the switch may work and the light come on for awhile but will eventually stop working. In my case 3 switches 1 not working from the start two worked for a day.  Brought out the multimeter checked for power found correct line from the box and the correct line to the light(box = 110 - 120 volts/to the light 0). I should have done that from the outset but thought the wiring would be a logical sequence i.e. wire entering the switch box closest to the circuit breaker box and the wire to the light exiting the switch box closest to the light.    I hope this all makes since and I did not loose you with all these words. The switches really do work great once they get going.

  • Thanks for the detailed response, Bill V, I do appreciate it, and don't worry, it made perfect sense!

Your experience is confirmed by the behaviour I saw.....   allowing a longer "charge" time for the capacitor/battery allowed for proper operation.   And the only way to charge the capacitor/battery is by having it wired up properly!  ;-)

It's been quite the educational experience, moreso because I'm finding out just how backwards my house is wired (a topic for a whole other forum!).

Thanks again for taking the time to share your experiences!   Hopefully I'll be able to pay it forward some day.   Nice to see a healthy community here.  :-)
