Beeping when Closing

Hi.  I just installed the app and the control panel.  Everything is great except that there is a loud beeping/alarm when the door closes.  I live in a condo complex and that loud beep is not cool.  Is there anyway to shut that off?  Thanks for the help.

  • The warning sound is a UL requirement for closing of a garage door opener from a remote location. Unfortunately, there is no option to turn the warning off.

Please let us know if you have any other questions!

I really don't like the beeping either.  I'd at least like the option to turn down the volume a bit.  When leaving in the morning (like 4am) it wakes up my wife.  Unhappy wife = unhappy life.

    Please help

I completely understand. Unfortunately, there is no way to turn it down, the beep and the volume of the beep are both a UL requirement.

I have kids and like it from a safety standpoint. It does makes sneaking home a little harder too. :)

I also have problems with the beeping. It disturbs my family and neighbors. Can you explain why it is a UL requirement while using the remote is not? Since there is no off option I'll be looking in to how to manually remove the beeper.

  • Liability concerns probably prohibit them from giving satisfaction on this but should be doable with either something as simple as a paper towel or disconnecting the speaker.  I installed last night and was getting the beeps and flashing light but didn't close.  I think now I just wasn't patient enough.

    Ryan,

When you use a remote to close the door, you have to be within sight of the opener which means you can see if there is something or someone in the way of the door. With the app you aren't there to see if someone is there, so the beeping flashing light are required to give warning to someone near the door to be aware that it will be moving.
    • But isn't the point of the beam located at the track to prevent someone from getting hit by the door since it both disables function of the door of an object is there and stops the door after its started going down if you walk through it....if I'm in my car across the street and use the regular remote there is no warning for someone who may walk out as I drive away but the beam is still there to "save them"

  • Has anyone successfully disabled the beeper yet? I, like you all, need to make it go away. Please post instructions. Thanks!

  • So mine beeps and the lights flash but the garage doesn't close.  Does it have to beep for a certain amount of time before the door closes?

The alarm is a piezoelectric buzzer and is easily removed.  Locate the circuit board by removing the back panel (unplug the unit first) and then removing the screws that hold it.  It comes out very easily, I didn't even unhook any of the wires.  On the circuit board locate the round black plastic thing with a hole in the top (or google piezoelectric buzzer and compare pictures).  Simply use a small screwdriver to pop the plastic cap off (it comes off very easily, you might be able to use your fingernails) and remove the disk inside.  Alarm disabled.  Put the cap back on (I taped the disk to mine in case I wanted to enable it again) and put it all back together.  It took me 10 minutes from start to finish.  This was the first thing I did after hooking my gateway up and finding out they won't let you disable it in software.

The beeping and flashing lights are a UL requirement. When you are activating your opener and you are not within sight of the door, it serves as a warning to anyone who is around that something is about to happen. Do not remove the safety feature from this unit.

    • I just installed my opener yesterday.  I will be disabling the alarm today as well.  It is superfluous and annoying.  I have kids and they are smart enough to know that when they see the garage door moving it is coming down (or going up).  They also know that they can press the button to stop it.
    • I'm using my opener as a modern day "latchkey" system for my kids and when my daughter used it for the first time, she called me in tears after she heard the din emitted by this little sucker when she came home from school. She called me in a panic about it.  There is a method to silence the buzzer by using a screw to cancel the vibration.  The advantage of this is that it can be more easily reversed if needed.  This is what I will be doing.

As someone pointed out, almost all garages already have a sensor that prevents them from closing when someone walks under the door (mine does).  All this MyQ "safety feature" does is traumatize anyone within earshot.

  • This buzzer is absolutely ridiculous.  If you can't get out of the way of a loud moving garage door with safety photo eyes on the frame and a pressure safety release on the door, you probably didn't make it out of the bathtub without drowning.  I tried removing the speaker from my first MyQ Control panel and board must have a resister safety because once the speaker was removed, the unit no longer worked.  So next step was to buy another MyQ Control panel, open it up and squirt warm super glue into the speaker, let it settle and repeat a couple times and now it sounds like a cell phone ringer on a very low volume.  Satisfactory at least although I still think its ridiculous not to give the owner a volume control.

  • Installed my Q today. Second thing I did is removed annoying buzzer ( thanks Brandon ). The UL requirement is for SAFETY ???. The word safety is used because the world has no common sense nowadays and it makes it acceptable to make ridiculous rules and regulations. I call B S. Make it buyers choice, this annoyance should be known to buyer either on box, on instructions or at least on the install video on liftmaster site.

  • Does anyone know how to remove/disable the speaker from a garage opener that has the myQ function included? All I had to do was buy the myQ gateway.

  • See my post a few comments up.  I'm not sure if your model is the same as mine, however you probably just need to access the circuit board and pop the cap off the piezoelectric buzzer.

    • Does anyone know if the 828L model has a visible speaker on the circuit board? I'd like to know before I start taking it apart.   I'm gonna get written up by the neighborhood housing association over that horrible, loud beeping!
    • I'm not sure if there is an 828L, but there is an LM model which is what I have and it doesn't have a speaker. I don't think for the UL requirements it could have the speaker because there is no requirement that it's in the garage (mines in the laundry room in a cupboard).

From looking at their product line it looks like if you have a MyQ enabled unit the speaker will be built into the unit itself.  Otherwise if you buy the MyQ Garage (821LM) it looks like the speaker and light are included in that package.  I'm not sure on the MyQ Retrofit Package (MYQPCK), but I assume it flashes the light on the motor unit but for the speaker it could be either place.

Anyways if you're going the 828LM (i.e. internet gateway) route then you'll most likely need to find the speaker on the circuit board attached to the motor on your ceiling.  It shouldn't take more than 20 minutes or so.

  • My neighbors called the fire Department while I was testing the myq out. I put a little hot glue in the speaker. It's quieter and you can still hear it and the light flashes. It'd be nice if the garage door opener lights flashed as well.

  • In old systems they'd make the garage light flash 3 or 5 times before closing with the remote. That standard has changed??
When I was a kid we could open (and close) the garage door from over a block away. No beeping.
What you're telling us is that if we use the REMOTE garage door open enter it's cool - no "safety" features required. If we use our app REMOTE garage door opener then there must be a siren?!? STUPID logic.
Good thing UL doesn't regulate seat belts. The car won't start till you click it in? STUPID logic.

So if my garage remote works from down the street. I remember that I didn't close the door - nobody gets a warning?.. I won't opt to use my phone, that's for sure, if the remote is in range.

This is completely moronic. Add a volume knob.

  • I have been an electrical/ electronic systems troubleshooter for more than 25 years.  These little annoying noise makers are called piezoelectric speakers. They are inside all kinds of electronic equipment for all kinds of reasons. I used to remove these speakers from the circuit boards like illustrated above, usually with good success. However, some circuit manufacturers are getting smart and building supervisory circuits into the speaker so if you remove it without replacing it with an equally resistive resistor, the functions of the circuit board will be shut down and not work anymore. My best solution to this annoying problem is to get a hot glue gun and force hot glue into the hole on top of the piezoelectric speaker.  Once the glue hardens it restricts the movement of the speaker diaphragm causing the noise to be greatly silenced if not completely silenced. HOWEVER if someone gets crushed under your garage door that has a disabled audible alarm, the liability is all on you.   Remember- always disconnect power before working on any electrical device.  Hope this helps.

  • Hi all... instead of risking the board by trying to remove the speaker, all you really have to do is take a hot glue gun and fill that middle hole in the speaker. It makes the sound super low and you don't risk destroying the equipment. I did it because of the hours I work. I can't have this thing waking up the neighbors at 2:30am.
